landscaping that requires small amounts of water to survive). Now that Colorado is goingthrough a severe drought, cacti is worth knowing about.I. Cacti can be sub-divided into three sub-families Pereskia, Opuntia Courst and Cactus sub-family. There is so little difference between the family that is hard tosub-divide. And to make things more confusing, any plant that can store large amounts ofwater is called succulents. Since cactus stores water they are also succulents. The cactusused in my experiment is the Opuntia Courst. This cactus is different from others becauseit has individual segments, like little fingers.II. Most cacti grow at equal distance from the equator. The greatest number of cactiare found from central Mexico to Southern California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. But at least one species of cacti can be found in every American state except for Maine,New Hampshire and Vermont. It has been found that cacti is native only to the Americas. Although many species are found in Greece, Spain and other countries, these can betraced back to the Americas having been brought back from expeditions.III. Since most cacti are found in very dry areas, the soil they do best in is very sandydirt. They actually do not do well in very thick, nutrient-rich soil.

Most cacti do not survive hard freezes. They do tolerate frost and very cooltemperatures, but in temperatures close to or below zero degrees Fahrenheit, cacti willbegin to die in areas not protected by brush or other plants. Obviously, cacti love hot, dryweather.

Cacti do not get much water naturally, so when it does rain the cacti will storewater in its thick leaves or body, as well as their roots. The cactus is covered with a thinwax layer to keep the moisture in. But too much water can cause the roots to rot. Andwithout its roots, the plant will die.IV. Because cacti have been around for thousands of years and live in very toughconditions, it has learned to reproduce by cuttings and seeds. Because of hot winds, seedsdo not often find good conditions to grow. Since their roots are so close to the surface, the winds will often pull up new cacti in strong sand storms.

It is believed that cuttings (parts of the plant comes off and put into soil where itwill develope roots of its own) are the way hardier cacti propagate. But can all cactireproduce this way? That is my experiment, taking segments of different plants andplacing them in sandy soil to see which, if any, will grow roots.V. As mentioned before, most cacti roots grow close to the surface in long spider-likelegs. When an occasional rain comes the roots soak up as much water as it can, transfering it to the plant. The roots will also store water for later use. When it uses thestored water, the roots dry up.

Some thicker cacti have one thick root that comes down directly from the stamen. This root helps to hold up the cactus. When the cactus goes long periods without waterthe stamen will dry up and go under ground to protect it from the hot sun. When it rainsthe stamen will again come above ground. The thick root holds water for later use.VI. If you walk in the desert and study cacti, you will notice that insects and birds usethe cactus for water, making small holes from which stored water will be released. Birdsuse the cactus to build nests in by picking out flesh and letting the hole dry up, leaving anopening in the cactus. The cactus protects the eggs and chicks from predators.

Many cacti have colorful flowers which open in cooler temperatures and close upduring the hottest part of the day. These cacti have become more and more popular asthey are relatively easy to grow. Areas suffering from water shortages, are finding thecacti a good replacement for more traditional plants.VII. Since the cacti live in difficult conditions, their survival is often short. But cactithat can survive have been known to live many years. Because the cacti is a survivor, ithas learned to let ‘older' parts of the plant or injured parts to dry up and let the newerparts thrive. Some recorded cacti living in the Arizona desert have been known to havelive as long as 150 years.

In carefully controlled areas, cacti will do what is expected, which is thrive. Inthese areas, cacti will last much longer. The longest recorded cactus in a controlled areahas lived over 00 hundred years.
