Agent Orange, a deadly mixture of the chemicals ,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and ,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid, was used in the Vietnam war to instantly destroy vegetation in order to cripple the Vietcong by exposing their hideouts and shelters (Wilcox 7). However, the U.S. didn't know how harmful the chemical actually was. They didn't know at the time, but Agent Orange contains dioxins, which are very dangerous to not only plants but also humans and other mammals. Exposure to dioxins multiplies the chances of cancers, immune system disorders, liver problems and other complications. The U.S. dropped approximately 11 million gallons over about 10 percent of southern Vietnam (Deneslow). The U.S. used the mixture freely and thought nothing of it or its consequences. When it was discovered in 171 that Agent Orange contained the most dangerous form of dioxin, TCDD, and caused cancer in rats, the spraying in Vietnam was stopped (Deneslow). The problems that the past sprayings of Agent Orange create in todays Vietnam are atrocious and are on the rise.

One of the primary problems in Vietnam due to the use of Agent Orange is that a significant number of South Vietnamese children that were born since the Vietnam war are born retarded, with deformations and with other health problems, including cancers. Some studies also show that exposure to Agent Orange is linked to adult-onset diabetes and leukemia. The Vietnamese children are born with too many fingers, lack of limbs, and even two rows of teeth to name a few of the problems. In a recent study, Dr. Nguyen concluded that children who live in the areas that were sprayed are "three times more likely to have cleft palates, three times more likely to be mentally retarded, three times more likely to have extra fingers or toes, and about eight times more likely to suffer hernias.(Deneslow)" Many others, including U.S. veterans, complain about headaches, numbness, frequent fatigue, and lack of muscular power, all due to Agent Orange exposure, which will probably lead to other, greater problems. The U.S. government offers compensation to those Veterans who were exposed to the chemical, but yet the U.S. denies that there is a link between the health problems and Agent Orange, stating that it is just propaganda and that there isn't enough research to find a link between the two (Wilcox 114). Vu Trong Huong, director War Crimes Investigation in Vietnam says "We have over 50,000 children that have been born with horrific deformities; the link is clear." The damage of the deadly chemical doesn't just involve people, it also involves the foliage and wildlife of Vietnam.

The use of Agent Orange throughout the conflict in Vietnam greatly affects the ecosystem of the country today. During the war, the defoliant destroyed a lot of the forests and had serious effects on the animal population of Vietnam. Areas of thick brush and trees now simply look like flat plains, and the forestry won't grow back for decades. Animals were poisoned, mainly ones in the bottom of the food chain, and they pass the poison to animals that eat them. Now many animals have birth defects and high death rate due to the Agent Orange poisoning. The chemical also contaminated many water supplies such as lakes and rivers and now renders them useless(Hatfield Group). A lot of work must be done to get the wildlife of Vietnam back to its pre-war state.

Much has to be done about the problems that the U.S. caused by using Agent Orange in the Vietnam war . Organizations like the Green Cross front the campaign to get Vietnam back to the way that it used to be. (Green Cross International) It seems that the U.S. won't do what it rightfully should until sufficient evidence, in their minds, arises, so the burden is up to the Vietnamese. The long list of diseases, defects, and complications continues to grow and won't stop until something is done. Works CitedWilcox, Fred A. Waiting for an Army to Die The Tragedy of Agent Orange.

Students have to participate and work together as a team. Students need to

turn papers and homework in on time because employee's have the same responsibility. Quizzes are just like a performance report that employee's get. They see how much youhave learned and test your knowledge. If you do everything like work hard, show up, andturn in assignments you will do good.

First of all, I agree with Bremer that students do not realize what is expected ofthem to be a good student. For example, I never tried that hard because I never knew thathow I did would effect my life. In high school, I would never study for tests, but I woulddo my homework. I would settle for the C's instead of studying for ten minutes andreceive a better grade. Participation is key in understanding the textbook. I would rathersleep or just draw to pass time. The few times that I would participate I would do betteron the tests because I understood what was going on. An example of me participating inclass is when I fill out the study guide. In our history class, the teacher would give us astudy guide to fill out that followed his lecture. The study guide had almost all thequestion's to the test. When I would fill the study guide out I received a good grade onthe test.

Next of all, is that students work harder at their jobs rather than school. I have anexample of my friend that works two jobs and goes to school at DACC. My friend goesto school in the morning, his first job in the afternoon, and his second job at nights. Goingto classes is not mandatory at DACC, but you will be dropped if you miss to many. Myfriend believes that working two jobs is great because he is making a lot of money. Hedoes not make it to class as much as he should. His grades are not what he should begetting. My friend believes he should work more because he is making lots of money rightnow without doing good in school. The thing he doesn't realize is that he could makemore money and work less hours if he would get a good education.

All in all, students need to realize what is expected of them. They need to show upfor class, participate, and do their work.

In a world so saturated with images and experiences of the realities of human nature, few people have had the courage to confront the issues and situations of our present the situation. Of all the different types of people who have been courageous and strong enough to fight this hopeless but noble battle, few expected our even realize that the band Pearl Jam remains a stable force in this category of fighters. Pearl Jam fights with its words, actions, and its music, inspiring thousands of fans to think and react to injustice, fear, and often painful experience of living in this world.

The Seattle Scene grew out of a rebellion against the Yuppie culture that sprawled in fishing town during the 180's. The popular bands of the time stopped making the extra trek to Seattle to perform, and it was this lack of music that sprawled hundreds of often connected bands to form. Bars and clubs became the perfect spot for the local community of bands and their fans to gather and enjoy the music. The music was heavily influenced by rock and punk but contrary to popular belief, it was not a particular sound that defined the Seattle Scene. Lack of concern for success and a common knowledge that there was no chance for commercial success in Seattle that created the emotion and purity of the music. The bands that stuck together with no hope for a future where those that truly loved music. This climate gave birth to some of the most powerful and moving music and the most influential bands to date. It was the creation of Sub Pop, the definitive Seattle independent record label which brought this scene to attention of the world. The two heads of Sub Pop, Bruce Pavitt and Jonathan Poneman add more stuff here using Screaming Life book.

A product of Seattle's newly coined "grunge" scene was the band Green River. With conflicting thoughts about the future of the band, the group split in 1. The band's guitarist, Stone Gossard, and bassist, Jeff Ament, together formed Mother Love Bone. Unfortunately, the lead singer, Andrew Wood, became the grunge scene's first casualty. Wood died of a heroin overdose on the eve of the band's first tour. Unable to regroup after the death of Wood, the band split in 1. Gossard and Ament recruited Mike McCready, a veteran of the Seattle scene, along with Matt Cameron from the band Soundgarden to record some tracks while looking for a lead singer. The musicians tapped a friend, Jack Irons, a drummer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers to help them in their search. Irons passed the tape of tracks the group had recorded to Eddie Vedder, a musician he had meet while playing in San Diego. Eddie Vedder had moved to Seattle in 1 with his family. Vedder dropped out of high school before his senior year in pursuit of a future as a singer/ songwriter. He joined the band Bad Radio, known for there distinctive pop sound. During this time, Vedder soaked up as much knowledge and experience as the San Diego music scene could provide him with. One of his favorite places to meet traveling musicians and learn about the record industry was working for free as a gofer at Bacchanal, a popular San Diego venue. It was there that Vedder meet Jack Irons. The lasting impression that the charming Vedder had on Irons proved to be the crucial link between the Seattle musicians and the talented Eddie Vedder, and in late 10 the band began to come together.

Eddie Vedder was greatly inspired from the rush of emotions and memories from his past that he experienced while listening to the tape he received from Irons. Immediately, he began to write lyrics to the songs. Vedder caught the first flight to Seattle where he meet Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament, Mike McCready, and Matt Cameron. The group immediately went to the studio where they recorded 11 songs in five days. This session gave birth to the powerful songs "Jeremy", which was inspired by a true story of a Texas student that commited suicide in his English classroom. "Alive" was inspired by a conversation Vedder had with his mother when he was thirteen in which she revealed that the man he thought was his biological father was actually his stepfather and that his real father was a distant family friend, a man Vedder had meet on occasion, that had recently died of multiple sclerosis. (Colapinto and Boehlert, 16, p.50). The band called itself Mookie Blaylock, after the famous basketball player, but after Mookie Blaylock himself objected, the group changed their name to Pearl Jam. The band soon signed with Epic and released their debut album, Ten, in August of 11. (Colapinto and Boehlert, 16, p.51). Initially, Ten's sales where low, but after Nirvana released Nevermind, the popularity of Ten increased dramatically and the album's first single "Alive" was played in heavy rotation on the radio and MTV. (Colapinto and Boehlert, 16, p.50).

When people think of wealthy people today, most people think of Bill Gates or Sam Walton. However, there were people in the past whose wealth would marvel that of the richest people today. The men responsible for the creation of the word millionaire lived back in the late 1th and early 0th centuries. These early businessmen and entrepreneurs were some of the richest and most powerful people of their time. In fact, their wealth is equivalent to if not more than some of today's richest people. Two of these men were "Commodore" Cornelius Vanderbilt and John Pierpont Morgan. Many people believed that these men were concerned with nothing but their money and wealth; however, nearing the end of their lives this was anything but true. Were these men robber barons or Robin Hoods? While comparing and contrasting these two men, hopefully one will be able to see that in the end they were both some-what like Robin Hoods.

To begin with, Cornelius Vanderbilt was born on May 7, 174 in New York to Cornelius and Phebe Vanderbilt (Vanderbilt 1). His family was relatively poor and could not afford very many luxury or treats. Consequently, he did not have the opportunity to go to school and, instead, began helping his father make money to support the family. When he was almost 16 years of age, he borrowed $100.00 from his mother and father and bought a small sailing vessel. With this ship, he started a passenger and freight service (1). After his first year in business, he raised enough money to pay back the $100.00 that he borrowed along with an additional $1000 to his parents (St. Francis 1). From this point on, he started building what was to become one of the most prominent sailing businesses in the United States (Vanderbilt 1).

John Pierpont Morgan was born on April 17, 187 to Junius Spencer and Juliet Pierpont Morgan in Connecticut (JohnPierpontMorgan 1). Born into a prominent family, he was very well off from the day he was born. After graduating from high school in Boston, he moved to Germany to attend college (1). After graduating from college, he learned very important banking and financial skills at the firm of Duncan, Sherman & Company (Morgan J.P. 1). After he had finished his training, he began working in the banking industry in his father's banking firm in London (1).

From comparing the early life of these two men, one can see that Morgan had a relatively easy upbringing and Vanderbilt had a tough upbringing. Vanderbilt had to work hard at an early age to build his business and make it successful. He did not have the luxury that Morgan had in attending school. Vanderbilt had a desire to succeed and be more successful in life than his parents, while Morgan was simply following the path that his father wanted.

Write my Essay on Vanderbilt for me

When Vanderbilt was approximately 5 years old, he startled his friends and family when he sold his sailing business and began working for Thomas Gibbons as a ferry Capitan (Vanderbilt 1). This was unusual for Vanderbilt since he had been self-employed since he was sixteen. Vanderbilt continued to work for Gibbons until 18 when he resigned. It was at this point that he took his money and opened his own steamboat business (1). It was from this business that he made most of his wealth and spent most of his life. By the age of 40, he was believed to have exceeded the half-million mark; a considerable amount during that time (St. Francis 1). He was regarded as a hard-nosed stubborn individual; he did nothing but work and make money. While continuing to run his steamboat business in the northeast U.S., he started building a route to carry people to California via Nicaragua and the Pacific. Brought on by the gold rush demand, Vanderbilt's route was faster and cheaper than his competitors' Panama route, and it made him over a million a year (1). During his middle age years, Vanderbilt dealt mainly with the shipping and passenger boat industry. But, it was from this industry that he learned about business and where he made most of his fortune due to his frugality.

After Morgan left his father's banking firm in London, he began working in the firm of Drexel, Morgan & Company (Morgan J.P. 1). It was during this time that he became the sole financier in the "largest reorganization of railways and consolidation of industrial properties" (JohnPierpontMorgan 1). In 101, Morgan formed the first billion-dollar corporation in the world, called U.S. Steel Corporation (Morgan 1). He held a dominant position in both domestic and international finance during this period (Morgan J.P. 1). In fact, "Morgan's great control over government finances and other private enterprises has never been matched by any other American" (1). During his prominent years as a banker and financier, he helped underwrite some of the biggest companies in America today, such as AT&T and General Electric (Strouse). Morgan's brilliance as a banker and determination as businessman led him to the top. He continued to play a very important role in the business world up till his death and had lasting effects on the country as a whole.

In comparing these two men's middle ages, one can see the difference in how each came to power and wealth. Vanderbilt, on one side, worked hard in starting a new steamboat business and he built his business from the ground up. Morgan, on the other hand, bought small businesses out to create his business. Both had different philosophies regarding business, but both became wealthy.

When Vanderbilt was almost 70 years old, he realized that the future was not in boats, but in railroads (St. Francis ). His first order of business after getting out of the boating industry was the purchase of both the New York and Harlem Railroads. In1867 he acquired the Central Railroad and merged it with the previously acquired Hudson River Railroad. Vanderbilt supposedly cleared 5 million in his first five years in the railroad industry (). Vanderbilt helped create one of the greatest railroad transportation systems in America (Vanderbilt ). During this time, he created thousands of jobs for men building his railroads (St. Francis ). Vanderbilt died on January 4, 1877 leaving the bulk of his estate to his son William (Vanderbilt ). Vanderbilt was not considered a great philanthropist by any means until he was almost dead. In his last years, he left one million to Central University, which was later named Vanderbilt University, and $50,000 to a church in New York where his friend was the pastor (). These were the only major contributions that Vanderbilt made.

Morgan continued his influence in the financial world up until his death in 11. In fact, in 185 and 107, he bailed out the U.S. from an economic panic (America's Last Emperor of Finance ). In 185, he stopped a run on the treasury and organized approximately 6 million in bonds to help out the U.S. Treasury. Again, in 107 he bailed out the Treasury of the United States. During this time, Morgan acted as the central bank of the United States. The later years of Morgan's life were marked with trouble and questions. In 11, Congress questioned him as too whether his money trusts controlled the U.S. financial industry. However, nothing came of the investigation (). Morgan made several major contributions to society in his later years. First of all, he donated money, buildings, land, and art to places such as St. John the Divine Cathedral, New York Trade Schools, New York Hospitals, Museum of National History, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (JohnPierpontMorgan 1). He also gave a complete set of signatures from the Declaration of Independence signers to the Library of Congress (1). Although, Morgan's later life was not as successful as his middles years, it was marked by many more contributions to society, and hence more beneficial to everyone.

One question arises when comparing and contrasting Cornelius Vanderbilt and J. P. Morgan. That question is whether or not they were robber barons or Robin Hoods? Though it is clear that in their early years, they were clearly robber barons getting rich off the work and exploitation of others, it is not so easy to say the same thing about their later years. Of these two men, J. P. Morgan was probably more of a robin hood than Vanderbilt. Morgan made more contributions to more people and places than Vanderbilt. Though both may be considered Robin Hoods in the end; Morgan was the better of the two. While comparing these two men, it is apparent that they were idols of their time, dictators in their respective fields. Through their determination and wit, they rose to the top of American society, and remained there still today. Works CitedAmerican's Last Emperor of Finance. Harold R. McAlindon once said, "The quality of an organization can never exceed the quality of the minds that make it up." This quote is true based on the novel, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, in which government is shown to be lost and anarchy has surfaced.

The symbolism, which Golding uses, is strong, using one of the boys, Ralph as a basis for democracy, and another boy named Jack as anarchy. Piggy is used to represent law and order, while Simon serves as a symbol of a Christ figure. The twins, "Samneric," represent the security and moral support that humans need from one another, and Roger symbolizes man's natural tendency to cause harm to others. There is conflict that develops between the boys on the island, and this symbolism helps the reader to realize the theme of the novel.

Ralph, with Piggy, makes an emphasis on a needed government, while Jack and Roger support anarchy on the island. Ultimately, in the end, anarchy and evil override government and democracy, as Golding's point of view is revealed that all men are evil. The plane crashes onto the island, and William Golding uses this setting showing that the boys are isolated from the rest of the world. The boys must fend for themselves, and by doing so two groups have formed.

Golding also uses foreshadowing many times throughout the novel. The beginning conflict between Jack and Ralph to become leaders foretells of bigger conflicts between the two later in the story. There are other times within the novel that foreshadows savagery, and thus, the boys adopt animal-like traits. During the novel, it has also shown that the weaker ones have been tortured, teased about, or picked on, and using this idea, eventually, Piggy is killed, and his glasses and the conch are broken, which leaves nothing of the law, order, and authority that they all had represented.

All the way through the novel, the perspective of the author, William Golding, supports the quote of Harold R. McAlindon. This is not about the society itself, but about the people within it. It is the minds of these of which make up the organization, and one cannot surpass this. This is a critical lens of the novel, Lord of the Flies with using literary devices and elements of the novel.

However, there are few professions that can provide the excitement experienced in the area of meteorology, in particular, that of field meteorology which is also called storm chasing. For more than fifty years, storm chasers

Cheap Custom Essays on chasing life

have been the first line of defense against deadly tornadoes and hurricanes. Chasers provide critical information about the storms; It is this information that has helped to save countless lives over the years.

I am one of the lucky few that has gotten to experience storm chasing first hand. I have spent two summers chasing tornadoes with my uncle. My uncle is a meteorologist employed by the National Severe Storms Laboratory in Norman, Oklahoma. He has spent almost every summer for the past fifteen years chasing tornadoes and braving the winds of hurricanes. My uncle does this to provide information that will hopefully save lives.

During my experience in storm chasing I have learned quite a bit. For example, there are many misconceptions about storm chasing. For the most part, these misconceptions come from movies such as "Twister". While these movies are very exciting, they also distort reality. Chasers never, under any circumstances, race along side a tornado or intentianally get within the path of a tornado. Also, chasers are never happy to see a tornado form. Tornadoes are among the most violent natural phenomena on earth and they kill a countless number of people every year. Of course, when it comes to scientific or historical accuracy, Hollywood has never pretyended to be faithful.

While the primary task of a storm chaser is to chase storms, they must also work to analyze their findings. It is only through analyzation and research that we can better hope to understand these thorouhly unpredictable storms. Storm chasers also must have a basic understanding of photography. Documenting these massive storms is one of the most important parts of chasing. Often the pictures or video is sent directly to local television stations in order to better warn the people in the path of the storm. After the pictures and video have been studied, they are copied and sold to various networks. This is one of the chief sources of income for most non-agency based storm chasers.

Why chase tornadoes? This question is frequently asked of storm chasers. It is not a question that can be answered while waiting for an elevator or in small conversation at a cocktail party. It toches many levels and requires time to answe. If my experiences are characteristic of other chasers, there are at least four levels that relate to the storm.

First is the sheer, raw experience of confronting a force of nature. It is a force that is uncontrollable and unpredictable. However, at the same time it is magnificent, awesome, and picturesque. Few life experiences can compare to the anticipation felt while watching a tornado form. The gusty inflow of warm, moist air sweeping up into a lowering, darkening funnel, and the low grumbling of thunder as a great engine begins to turn creates an almost surreal surrounding.

Second is the challenge of locating and forecasting where these deadly stormsmay occur. Even though there is state of the art technology at work, a chaser almost always relys upon personal experience and intuiton to guide them. Every day is a new puzzle, completely different from the day before, the week before, or the year before. There is no texbook for what chasers do. Even the most experienced meteorologist eventually get one wrong.

Third is the sense of participation in a great event that comes with experiencing a tornado first hand. The knowledge of the storm itself provides for some of the excitement. To know of the winds that stream over and through the towering thunderheads from their source in the jet stream makes the chaser almost become part of the storm itself.

Fouth is an associative level. With each spring and each new storm, memories of other storms and of other places begin to surface. The memories and exhileration of seeing your first tornado makes it seem as if you haven't aged at all. The first hand experience of storm chasing makes it seem as if time is standing still and that nothing exists except for you and this monster of nature.

I can only describe storm chasing as the chance to experience something infinite. The sense of power and the scale of the storm overwhelms the senses. This gives you the feeling of something eternal and at the same time of something etherial. Such as when a fifty-thousand foot wall of clouds glides gently away and goes golden in a setting sun. Was Germany to blame for World War One?Though Germany turned out to be the Central Power and most involved in the war, there is little or no evidence that the Germans had planned for war. There are several fundamental causes that had brought the world to the brink of war nationalism, imperialist competition, militarism, and the build up of pre-war alliances. The growing appearance of these factors perhaps inevitably led to what was called the Great War, World War One.Germany had a variety of reasons for being willing to be involved in World War One. The assassination of Austrian archduke Frances Ferdinand and his wife on June 8th 114 by a Serbian student named Gavrilo Princep, who was part of the militant group called the Black Hand, was a result of nationalism caused by the moulding of the Yugoslavian provinces into a single state. At the same time Germany had put forward a treaty proposal to Austria stating that Germany would defend Austria if they were in trouble and the elimination was an example of the Hapsburg's loss of control. If Austria were to decline Germanys offer, Germany would be completely surrounded by enemies. The German government also knew that Russia would lose a major base in Europe if they were to lose Yugoslavia. Germany believed that Russia would back down like they had in an early war involving Austria and Serbia. Aside from that, Germany had recently made an alliance with Turkey, which made them confident that they could defeat any European country. Another benefit that Germany had was that England would not enter the war if Russia were the aggressor. But Germany did not know that the general opinion around Europe was that even if Serbia had been involved in the assassination it was not grounds to conquer it. Austria declared that they would go to war against Yugoslavia, but they were hesitant to do so because Yugoslavia held a defensive treaty with Russia. Germany had made a defensive treaty with Austria, so they promised that if Austria went ahead and made a move against Yugoslavia, Germany would defend them from Russia. Germany then told Austria to begin the war, and if it evolved into a larger conflict, Germany would support them.

Germany had been developing plans for invasions into every European country since the time of Bismarck. One of these plans was called the Schlieffen Plan. The plan basically called for quick, encircling movements that would surround and destroy the enemy. This plan was used for the invasion of France and also for individual conflicts like the Battle of Tannenburg. One of the key points of this plan was that it was absolutely necessary to put all possible force behind the invasion of France and not to hold any soldiers back in reserve. It was Germanys hope to end this war quickly by attacking France immediately and overrunning it before Russia had a chance to mobilize. Aside from these war plans, Germany also tried to stop countries from getting involved in the war by starting revolutions in them. It worked in Russia but no where else.the odyssey"During his travels, Odysseus meets many dangers and temptations which threaten to prevent his return to Ithaca. Which do you think was the greatest danger and which the greatest temptation? Why did they fail to prevent his return?"Odysseus encountered many dangers and temptations during his ten-year quest to return to his homeland of Ithaca. From the Sirens enchanting voices to the terrifying entrapment in the Cyclops' cave; the only way Odysseus survived these perils and enticements was due to his heroic resourcefulness and courage. He was tempted and tested, but remained strong and true to his goal of returning home to his people. The first obvious danger that Odysseus faced was the Battle of Troy. He voluntarily and valiantly led his men through the war and finally overcame the Trojans by utilizing his clever inventiveness. The mighty hero lost many companions to the bloody war and could have easily lost his own life if it was not for his natural prowess, or the favour of the gods and goddesses of Mount Olympus, and particularly Athene. In Book Eight of the Odyssey, the gifted bard Demodocus sings of the battle "…Odysseus, looking like Ares himself, went straight to Deiphobus' house with the gallant Menelaus. And there, he engaged in the most terrible of all his fights, which in the end he won with the help of the indomitable Athene…" The horrid Charybdis and Scylla were also a great danger to Odysseus. He had to face one or the other to continue on his journey the great River of Ocean provided no other possible way through to the island of Thrinacie, where the Sun-god's cattle grazed. Odysseus showed his leadership expertise and courage by taking the advice of the beautiful goddess Circe, and facing the wrath of Scylla, who greedily snatched six of his men from his ship; whom Odysseus was willing to sacrifice for the safety of the rest of his crew. These dangers were all perilous, and seemingly inescapable if it was not for Odysseus' audacity and bravery. Gods and goddesses such as Athene, Hermes and Zeus helped the hero and pulled him through when it was not humanly possibly, even for Odysseus. However, I believe that the greatest danger Odysseus faced on his voyage was escaping the wrath of the sea-god Poseidon that was forced on him due to the incident that blinded Poseidon's son, Polyphemus the Cyclops. The Cyclops outdid Odysseus in many aspects. He was at least three times the size of Odysseus, and immensely stronger also, as Odysseus predicted before he even met the Cyclops "…I had an instant foreboding that we were going to find ourselves face to face with some barbarous being of colossal strength and ferocity, uncivilized and unprincipled…" Odysseus made three main mistakes in the Land of the Cyclopes. Firstly he abused the code of hospitality and arrogantly took food and delicacies from Polyphemus' cave. He then gave in to his curiosity, which was actually one of his heroic qualities that became arrogant at that point. Odysseus exercised his cunning by tricking the Cyclops and then his resourcefulness by injuring Polyphemus and escaping from the cave. Lastly, Odysseus made the mistake of boasting his win to Polyphemus when he thought he was safe from the Cyclops. When Poseidon heard of his son's misfortune, he was furious and promised Odysseus that he would not get home to Ithaca "…without a bellyful of trouble…" Odysseus therefore had to endure the god's wrath to overcome all of the dangers he put before Odysseus. Many of the temptations Odysseus confronted were also a danger to him. Circe, the beautiful yet crafty goddess, lured Odysseus into staying with her in her palace. She offered him a partnership in power as well as a fulfilling abundant of food and wine. The messenger god, Hermes warned Odysseus of Circe's trickery and magic and gave him a special potion that would protect him against her dangerously tempting invitations. An inducement similar to Circe was the breathtaking nymph Calypso. She desired Odysseus so much that she kept him captive with her for seven years after he was washed onto the shore of her island of Ogygia, offering him a beautiful marriage and immortality if he agreed to stay with her. This would have been very tempting to Odysseus, but he never lost sight of his goal of returning home to his wife and son, and his heart rejoiced when the nymph finally released him.The enchanting voices of the Sirens were another unavoidable temptation to Odysseus but he prepared himself for the experience and made sure that he could not give in to the attraction. The mystical allurement of the Sirens' voices was humanly impossible to escape, and so Odysseus faithfully plugged the ears of his crew so that they would not be lost to the temptation, but he had to be restricted if he himself was to hear their voices "…But if you wish to listen yourself, make them (Odysseus' men) bind you hand and foot on board and place you upright by the housing of the mast, with the rope's ends lashed to the mast itself…" (Circe's advice)One would argue that Calypso's offer of marriage, beauty and immortality was the greatest temptation, however I think that Odysseus was ultimately tempted when offered a home in Phaecia. This was at the end of his journey and I believe that he would have been extremely exhausted, both physically and emotionally, and would be very near to giving up hope and taking the easiest option taking the Phaecian king Alcinous' daughter, Nausicaa's hand in marriage, and therefore inheriting a pleasantly rich life in Phaecia where Odysseus would have been loved by all and treated like a king.Despite the tremendous temptation of remaining in Phaecia to live a life of luxury, this did not prevent him from returning home to Ithaca. The hero's guardian goddess, Athene revived the courage and the hope in his heart and gave him the strength to leave the Phaecians' delightful way of life, and eventually return home. However, he had to surpass Poseidon's wrath against him and the Phaecians, which proved to be his greatest danger. Odysseus was able to get back to Ithaca because of his creditable heroism, and all of the qualities that went with this courage, resourcefulness and strength. However, he would not have been able to succeed in his voyage if he did not have the favour of the gods of Olympus Athene especially was with him always and protected and helped him through the dangers and temptations he came across over the twenty years that he was away from his home.107 words

Born in 115 on her father's station in Wallamumbi, New South Wales, Judith Wright grew up to be both a well-known Australian poet and an environmental activist, a passion that inspired many of her works. Her recurring themes include the resilience of the human spirit; the constant struggle of people living in adversity and misfortune; the land on and around where she lives; and the plight of the Australian Aborigines and environment (LearningCert.net). ‘How deeply the active and contemplative may combine in a poet … she grew up with a passionate love and involvement in the life of the country and all its creatures, which is at the root both of her poetry and her political involvement.' (Hope). One particular poem to be written with the environmental theme was "Night After Bushfire".Through the use of extensive imagery, the poem evokes a very clear picture of a bushland or forest devastated by fire. The bleak and black environment is easily imagined through phrases such as ‘Charred death upon the rock leans his charred bone' and ‘this landscape of charcoal and moonlight'. There is also suggestion, however, that "Night After Bushfire" is not only about the aftermath of a bushfire, but the possible effects of a nuclear attack, something Wright was also concerned with.

There are several themes in this poem, and two of them are suggested by the title, "Night After Bushfire". Wright uses darkness to great effect, both through the natural darkness of night and the black darkness of ash and the charred remains of the forest. Although the sun is mentioned in stanza one, and moonlight in stanza three, light is used to contrast against the more prominent theme of darkness. Death is another major theme, used as a result of the fire sweeping through, ‘Charred death upon the rock leans his charred bone and stare at death from sockets black with flame.'. Death and blackness are often themes that go hand in hand. There is one more theme that is suggested in the poem, and that is silence and stillness. This is related to the theme of death, but is also, in its own way, a separate one. The opening line of the poem, ‘There is no more silence on the plains of the moon', is a phrase which suggests the utter silence of the place in a way that the reader immediately knows, even without the title, that something has happened to the place where the poem is set.The silence also creates a feeling in the reader, a feeling of horror and, in some cases, perhaps fear. Silence can be very frightening if the silence is threatening, but the overall sense in the poem is not one of fear, but of dismay at the death and destruction that has occurred. This is a deliberate thing that Wright has done, stemming from her commitment to environmental issues (Wright was a member of the Wildlife Preservation Society during the 160s [McIlroy]). The loss of life for both wildlife and vegetation due to bushfire is something that occurs often, sometimes through thoughtless vandalism, sometimes through nature itself, and Wright highlighted this continually as an area needing to be addressed.Part of the way that the images are presented to the reader is through personification. Wright personifies two things in "Night After Bushfire", the sun in stanza one, and death in stanza two. By having the sun as a moving, living thing ‘Sun thrust his warm hand down at the high noon', the contrast is again provided between the light and the dark. There is also a contrast between life and death, because the sun is shining after the fire, and is showing off the destruction left behind by the flames. It also, in its own way, shows that despite the destruction, the land will rise again to be living and green.Death is personified in stanza two, in order to have the imagery come to life in the mind of the reader. ‘Charred death upon the rock leans his charred bone and stares at death from sockets black with flame.' Wright uses imagery to great effect, and this personification is a technique used as part of it. ‘What Australian readers found that was new within these familiar formal structures was the mundane - our familiar landscapes and lives - made numinous through metaphors which allowed us to believe in the mind and nature as one, not just in Wordsworth's lake district but on our own doorstep.' (Strauss, 10).Having death personified brings a dark reality to what otherwise might have been just an illusion in the reader's mind, and it is a reality that is common of the Australian bush. As mentioned previously, Wright uses silence to create a feeling in the reader. The silence itself does not create fear or horror, but when combined with the elaborate imagery about death and the use of the word ‘threatened' in stanza three, line one, there is certainly an emotional effect. Some would see this as creating fear, others simply horror. ‘…he who wears the string chains of day will lose it in this landscape of charcoal and moonlight.' These lines, in stanza three, refer to the loss of soul that the fire can bring about. Stanza three itself is like a warning to the reader, to hasten their departure from the scene or risk death. ‘Carry like a threatened thing your soul away,And do not look too long to left or right,For he whose soul wears the strict chains of dayWill lose it in this landscape of charcoal and moonlight.'This stanza finishes off the theme of death started in stanza two, because in stanza two death is real, it is there in the bush taking life, but in stanza three Wright warns the reader against it, thus removing the realness of death - which is not personified in stanza three.Wright uses a simple rhyme scheme in "Night After Bushfire", an ABAB pattern in each stanza, such as stanza one, where the lines end with ‘moon, here, noon and fear' respectively. There are no half-rhymes, and the poem uses a tetrameter system, with four stressed syllable and four unstressed syllables per line."Night After Bushfire" has elements of religion tracing through the lines. Not only is there the theme of death, but also the two references to soul. In stanza two, Wright mentions leaving behind ‘his human home and name'. This refers to death, but also to going somewhere other than earth - such as to heaven. Also, stanza three talks about soul - ‘Carry like a threatened thing your soul away' and ‘he whose soul wears the strict chains of day'. This shows that Wright was a spiritual person, whether or not she completely believed in an institutionalised religion such as Catholicism. The first line quoted again talks about the soul leaving the body after death, the second refers to a type of person who might be at risk of dying in such a disaster.Darkness and death are often used as themes in religion. God is viewed as light and almighty, while hell is dark and sombre, as well as frightening. These themes are evident in the poem, thus adding to the suggestion that "Night After Bushfire" could be considered somewhat religious. There is an appearance through the poem that Wright dislikes very materialistic people. In stanza two where she writes ‘Man, if he come to brave that glance alone, must leave behind his human home and name.' and in stanza three where she mentions the ‘strict chains of day', it seems as if she is saying that if you stay with your possessions instead of seeking safety, you are at risk of perishing with your property and losing your soul. ‘Wright's activism in the public world, initially in conservation matters and then increasingly in Aboriginal affairs, may be unusual in a poet, but it fits perfectly with her commitment to psychic integration.' (Strauss, 15)Throughout the eighty-five years of her life, Judith Wright showed through her works a very passionate love affair with the world in which she lived - rural New South Wales and Queensland. Although spending time in Sydney, during her school years and after World War Two, she returned to her former home, the bush. Her poetry advocated environmental conservation, something close to her heart, as well as using themes of reconciliation and spirituality. She was a modern poet who used a classic theme, but in a new framework and by allowing us to ‘believe in the mind and nature as one, not just in Wordsworth's lake district but on our own doorstep.' (Strauss, 10). "Night After Bushfire" highlights two of the concerns she held for the land, that of devastation through fire and also of nuclear bombs and their effect. Colin Powell did not give any specifics. This much is obvious from a recent meeting between the U.S., China, and North Korea We will not be intimidated. The United States will only offer aid to countries that fully halt nuclear weapon production. The United States won't reward a rogue nation for its bad behavior. North Korea should certainly stop producing the dangerous weapons they have. What else can they do to earn United States support?1. Kill all their leaders. The guillotines would be more appropriate in this country than they were in France all those many years ago. Leaders have raped, pillaged, and destroyed a country that doesn't have a whole lot to start. These leaders should die publicly. You think Iraq's people were glad to be released? North Korea's leadership is more viscous and violent.. Install Technology Infrastructure. They need to produce something in this land. They have few, if any, natural resources. The people are so weak with hunger they can't even think. The one thing they can offer is hard work. Let's get them involved as a cheap alternative for tech geeks. Their country will need some sort of boost to get started. The U.S. didn't become a technological giant overnight. North Korea can be our satellite, as well as our outlet for cheap labor.

. Give Japan a slice of the pie. The Japanese, long our friends, are struggling economically. Allow them a chance to buy into North Korea. They can send politicians, money, and ideas to this woebegone country. Japan cannot, however, steal the nukes an sell them on the open market. If we do let them come in, we need to watch them.4. Paddle them. I know Powell has been dying to take one of these evil nations over his knee. North Korea can be the example. Just like a powerful father, we need to take these mischievous murderers over our knee. And whip that ass like until the nukes fall into our pockets.5. Help the people. There are twenty-four million people starving right now. They need aid. Once the oppressive leadership is gone, we can help the citizens. They deserve it. We can institute our democracy. North Korea can be an example for China, who will eventually come over to the good side. Humanitarian aid is the way to surrounding country's hearts, just like food to a man's. Trickle down helponomics works. That is how we finally solve the North Korean quagmire.

The only disability in Hart's life was knowing that he had an injured leg. He appeared to limit himself and sever whatever connection he had left with the outside world. Hart took the war hard, beginning not understanding the reason of fighting the Japanese, to wondering where he stood in relation to the matter, to loathing them for the destruction and carnage that plagued his own life.Ida Ida a seemingly a self centered being, only worrying about herself and the fastest way back to England, though it was clear here is where it heart lay. Halloween seems to be the favoured time of year for directors to release yet another saga of tacky and uninspiring horror movies, each as laughable as its predecessor. However, this year we have been promised different; in the long awaited Cannes Film Festival - ‘true horror will be bought back to our screens.' The three day festival is expected to display ‘the best of the horror genre' giving it the opportunity to portray true horror. Will choosing the films a difficult task? Maybe, perhaps there will be arguments about what to show on the last day. But surely the choices are otherwise obvious. There are some films, one or two, over which there can be no debate; namely Hitchcock's ‘Psycho'.

How can one of, if not the greatest horror movie of all time, not be included, in such a respected film festival? This would be sacrilege!

First screened in June 160 Psycho took box-office records by storm, its controversial content shocked its audiences, and the brilliance of Hitchcock's editing and cinematography was bound to make it one of the best films of all time! However, it wasn't just these qualities that made ‘Psycho' such a renowned horror movie. One must not forget Hitchcock's skilful, yet quirky usage of black and white film, evenwhen colour was available. The usage of black and white enabled Hitchcock to play with light and dark. Shadows, sillouhettes and reflections are created with ease, adding to dramatic effect creating a feeling of suspense and unease. The clever usage of lighting is particularly apparent in Lila's discovery of the skeleton of Norman's mother. She flings her hands back in shock, hitting the low hanging light bulb causing it to sway, creating a mass of dancing shadows, as though there is another figure in the room about to pounce on Lila.

This creative and effective form of suspense works in parallel with Hitchcock's highly convincing and exceptionally crafted camera shots. Throughout ‘Psycho' Hitchcock uses numerous different camera shots, each one creating its own effect. For example, he uses long distance shots to create an atmosphere, and to encourage the viewer to want to get closer to the picture, anxious to discover what is to happen in greater detail. This is used when Bates Motel is framed giving the viewer a sense of horror that is to come. This shot has become a classic image of cinema, being used in all modern horror movies. Dolly shots are also used to this effect in the very opening scene, when Hitchcock zooms into the apartment building where Marion and Sam are. Hitchcock uses subjective shots to allow the audience to empathise with the character. These shots enable us to experience the drama that the character is going through, we become part of the action. Another shot that Hitchcock uses to the same effect is close-up shots, we are forced to take in the characters' facial expression and how they are feeling. The most obvious scene in which he uses this is when Marion is driving down the highway, after having just stolen $40,000. She has the clear emotion of distress on her face, and we are forced to see that, and sympathise with her. Hitchcock also uses repetitive camera patterns to express the most important parts of the movie. For example he almost always has a bird in the shot when Norman is there, suggesting another presence; that someone else is watching them/him hence his split personality. He also does this with the money, although this is to ‘put you off the scent' and believe that Marion's fate will have something to do with money.

‘The Shower Scene' is one of the most famous scenes in the history of film. I bet if you asked anyone who is involved in the film industry, they would be able to give you a perfect summary, of the beautiful blond being murdered by the twisted psychopath, a scene in which Hitchcock's true skill as a director really becomes obvious.Hitchcock is able to catch Marion's vulnerability at being caught naked and exposed, and at the same time capture the horror that she is about to encounter. The camera angles at which he shoots this scene forces the audience to feel sympathetic towards the character, and put ourselves in her position. For example shots of her neck, and her with her mouth open reinforce her vulnerability and defencelessness. And even though we are aware of the dark approaching figure, we are still surprised to see the actions that it takes; drawing back the curtain and fatally murdering Marion. Again the ingenious camera work that is used, is able to avoid any glimpse of nudity or the knife coming into direct contact with her skin. This allows the viewer to give their ‘own view' on the scene without Hitchcock having to show every little detail. Another great aspect of this scene is the dark and chilling score that is used by the composer, Bernard Herrmann. The contrast of the low, shallow sounds from the cellos and the screeching, high-pitched, fast-working violins, really express Marion's emotions, and the music really displays to the audience how she feels. Towards the end of the scene we view a close-up of Marion's hand slowly slipping down the tiles of the shower, as though it is her last chance of life. As she lies motionless on the floor, Hitchcock focuses on her eye, a tear slowly dripping from it, the last tear she shall every cry. This brings a finality to the scene, indicating to the audience that Marion is ‘finally' dead.

In ‘Psycho', Hitchcock's ability to manipulate the audience by giving them subplots to follow, intensifies the horror that is to come. The opening scene of ‘Psycho', gives the impression that it is a romance movie, as two lovers are our first image. It then changes to a plot of stolen property, when Marion steals the money and is pursued by the policemen, we imagine that the danger is coming from the law. It is not until we see the horrific murder of Marion, that we realise it is a horror film, and we are immediately put on the edge of our seats. Hitch cock is able to make his viewers, believe what he wants them to, this is what makes him such a great director, and a profound master of manipulation.

As a viewer of ‘Psycho', we are again, manipulated by Hitchcock, to sympathise with the characters and allow them to lead us in a different direction. We become especially attached to Marion, even though she has stolen money. She gives the impression that she is a exposed character, and this makes us feel sorry for her. This is an important aspect of the film because if we didnt care for Marion, and weren't emotional involved with her character, then the death would be pointless. This is important because if we did not feel anything for Marion, her murder would be pointless and the beautifully crafted shower scene would be ruined. We are also forced to feel the same way towards Norman. Even though we have the inkling that he is Marion's murderer, as the car begins to sink, and suddenly pauses, we urge the car to continue, because we do not want him to get caught. Hitchcock has masterfully manipulated us into sympathising with a murderer and a thief. Hitchcock also uses certain aspects of the movie to relate the audience to the characters, and the film itself. For example , the most obvious being the name Norman. The name Norman, sounds like normal; implying that he is a ‘normal' guy. This ‘freaks us out' slightly that someone we know who is ‘normal' could be like Norman, and have a different side to them. Hitchcock uses subjective shots, so we are forced to get into his character as a psychopath. We find ourselves in his position, looking through a small peep hole into Marions room, whilst she is getting undressed. It makes us feel uncomfortable, and starts to show us the other side of Normans personality.

‘Psycho's' Oedipal theme had been used in earlier films, however the way in which Hitchcock constructs ‘Psycho' is significantly different compared with regular horror movies of the time, which just involved aliens and out of space creatures. The theme shocks audiences, it gets inside us, confuses us to think that a son could love his mother so much, that he can be possessed to act as her, and think the way she might have. The film explores how people who have such extreme illnesses can be so incredible dangerous.

When we sit down to watch ‘Psycho', we notice the strange cracked lettering that is displayed in the opening credits. One immediately thinks that Hitchcock must have used these to create a felling of eeriness, although it is not until we meet, and find out a little more about Norman, that as a viewer, we realise a true meaning................. Norman Bates is caught in his own private trap - obsessed with mother love, he refuses to let go of his deceased mother and clutches on to her feelings and thoughts. The audience realise that Norman is the Psycho, he is the source of the cracked title. Norman Bates is the split personality.

However, this film will be remembered for Hitchcock's flawless directing skills. Like many of his other movies he has the ability to change the pace superbly. He makes us feel comfortable for the first few scenes, but once we ‘get past that mark' he frightens the hell out of you, and puts us on tenterhooks for the rest of the film.

So...... The 160's classic that broke box office records by miles, and earned over fifteen times as much as it took to make, gave audiences shower phobias and brought Motel sales down by 15%, and still is one of the great, or even the greatest horror movie of all time, and do I still have to ask........ why should they include it?

Good Names for O'Connor's Characters

In Flannery O'Connor's "Good Country People", O'Connor uses the character's names to illustrate the qualities of the personalities she depicts. O'Connor does this not only with the main characters but, the minor characters as well. The story progresses by introducing three sets of people; Mrs. Freeman and Mrs. Hopewell, Mrs. Freeman's two daughters, and Hulga Hopewell and Manley Pointer. The amount of insight O'Connor offers to her readers is related to the reader's knowledge of the characters' names.

In the beginning of the story readers are introduced to Mrs. Hopewell and Mrs. Freeman. As her name implies, Mrs. Hopewell is an optimistic and gentle character that often sees things in a positive light. While discussing Mrs. Freeman's ill daughter, Mrs. Hopewell says "She'll be better in a few weeks." (O'Connor 15) Mrs. Hopewell also takes great care to emphasize that she loves country people and feels no class distinction between herself and the country characters. Mrs. Freeman, the wife of a sharecropper, enjoys the freedom of being an uneducated, country, household servant. The author tells us that for Mrs. Freeman "it was not often necessary for her to retract a statement" (O'Connor 118); a freedom in and of itself. Another example of her liberty is that without the impediment of medical training, Mrs. Freeman even diagnoses her daughter's pregnancy as ectopic. It is interesting that O'Connor never allows the reader the intimacy of knowing either ladies first name.

As the short story progresses the reader is introduced to Mrs. Freeman's daughters, Glynese and Carramae in a conversation between Mrs. Hopewell and Mrs. Freeman. In the case of Carramae, a married and pregnant fifteen-year-old, O'Connor tells us a great deal about the details of her marriage and pregnancy while never revealing her married sir-name. The writer tells readers the details Glynese's pending engagement but, readers are never offered a first-hand introduction to either daughter. Immediately after O'Connor describes Glynese as "a redhead, was eighteen and had many admirers" (O'Connor 118), she says of Carramae, "a blonde, was only fifteen but, already married and pregnant. She could not keep anything on her stomach" (O'Connor 118) limiting readers to certain facts about the two Freeman daughters. The writer uses the dialogue between Mrs. Hopewell and Mrs. Freeman about the Freeman daughters to illustrate the lives of their respective families.

With the two main characters, O'Connor continues using the character names to illustrate the types of people the characters are. Readers are introduced to Joy Hopewell, the daughter of Mrs. Hopewell. The very name Joy Hopewell is so optimistic yet, she is the most tragic character. Readers learn Joy lost her leg as a child and later was diagnosed with a serious heart condition. Joy Hopewell was so determined to be miserable that she changed her first name to Hulga and "stumped" around the house feeling superior to the others because she had earned her Ph.D. in philosophy. O'Connor adds subtle irony after Hulga/Joy's diatribe"Woman! Do you ever look inside? Do you ever look inside and wee what you are not? God! Malebranch was right! We are not our own light. We are not your own light!"(O'Connor 11-1). The author illustrates to her readers that Hulga/Joy is an existentialist yet she refers to a philosopher whose core belief is "that God alone is the true cause of all events" (McCracken 4).

The next character introduced is Manley Pointer, a door-to-door bible salesman. Manley presents himself to both Mrs. Hopewell and Hulga as "real simple…just a country boy." (O'Connor 1). O'Connor goes to great pains to show Pointer as an uneducated, simple young man and then the author offers a simple irony; Pointer makes Hulga/Joy Hopewell, Ph.D. vulnerable to him and steals her wooden leg. In the end, O'Connor shows her readers that everything about Manley Pointer, even his name is false.

In Flannery O'Connor's "Good Country People", O'Connor illustrates the characters she depicts by giving them descriptive names. All of the characters, both major and minor, have names reflective of their personalities. The two main characters, Joy/Hulga Hopewell, Ph.D. and Manley Pointer, are both proven not to be the persons that the author portrays, their names imply or the personalities they present to one another. Book Review A Rumor of WarByTony ManningA Rumor of War is a griping eloquently written story telling of the trials and tribulations of a young Lieutenant Caputo and how his views changed with the course of the war. It demonstrates how morality is juxtaposed with duty and honor. It portrays how "ordinary" men become killers. The book concentrates on the units that Caputo served in, but also reflects that the enemy must be compelled to feel the same way and Caputo begins to realize there is little difference in man in war regardless of their nation of origin. Other books that come to mind that could be compared with this work include The Red Badge of Courage, The Killer Angels and Ordinary Men. Though these books cover other wars they give the reader a sense of what the soldier must have felt. Ordinary Men goes one step further and helps to explain the process of soldiering and the art of killing, though it concentrates on a reserve unit, of aging veterans that are deployed behind enemy lines, which kills noncombatants; the process is surprisingly similar to the process described by Caputo. Caputo is trying to give a true account of his, and others, feelings in the hopes that future wars may be avoided, but fears that his message will largely go unheeded; therefore he is actually seeking some form of personal justification, understanding and spiritual healing for his actions.

Caputo came from a very safe and secure family and joined the military mainly as a way of showing his family that he was responsible and independent of them and wanted something more exciting than his boring mundane world. He was filled with ideas of grandeur and glory, but in a few short years those ideals would be forever dashed by his experiences in Vietnam. He found that war is far from glorious. He related the training he endured and explained that the severe physical and mental anguish that the recruits endured was designed to hardened them for war by removing any shreds of their individuality and any links they had to their former civilian lives or societal norms, but based on his later accounts I do not think anyone can prepare mentally for war. Nevertheless, the Marines did change Caputo. They did harden him. They made him confident, at least until Sergeant Sullivan's death. The training the recruits underwent turned them into killing machines. This became more and more evident as the war progressed and their grips on morality began to fade. The biggest price paid was that the marines lost most of their sense of self, which made it much easier to commit actions they normally would not and harder to refuse the actions of the group (peer pressure). Caputo was sent to Danang and told to guard the airbase there. He was excited about the prospect of impending combat and was expecting to get the glory that was due him. The situation changed as soon as they entered their first combat. They were baffled by the fact that people were shooting at them without any apparent reason and this led to increased caution, but also molded them into more professional and tougher soldiers while it taught them the nuances of war. They were still in the grips of doing what was right and figured that there was a natural law to everything. The longer they stayed the more they realized that Vietnam was not what they expected. Most of their time was spent in tense waiting and the firefights they did have were brief. Their attitudes changed in earnest when they suffered their first casualty, Sergeant Sullivan, and the most perplexing thing of all was that he had not died a glorious death. They believed they were nearly invincible, but if they did die they felt it would be under movie-like heroic conditions, something to die for. They also entered the war feeling it would be very short in duration that the enemy was no match for the power of the United States. This too was soon dashed as they realized that it was going to be a war of attrition. Caputo makes a note to show how new arrivals and rear echelon units are full of confidence and loyalty, but how this usually sours after they spend a tour in a front line fighting unit.Sergeant Sullivan is the key turning point for Caputo. It is here that he realizes that the war is not some fairy tale where everyone lives happily ever after. Another important point in the war was when his close friend Levy died. Caputo felt guilty that Levy had died and he had not. Caputo felt Levy had joined for the right reasons (duty, justice and honor) where he had only joined for personal reasons (glory, self-respect and boredom). The moral fiber of the soldiers began to erode when they saw the enemy was not always following the same rules that they were. They soon began to adopt the enemy tactics out of both fear of their lives and revenge for those who lost theirs. This changes played havoc on the mental state of the rifleman and often he would enter into deep depressions, where they would want to do little or nothing and were often dark, glum and brooding (he points out a soldier who killed another just because he did not want to get up and go on watch), or high anxiety, where the soldier broke down and let his fears rule and often had outbursts of bitter rage (he mentions a soldier who had an anxiety attack, cried and rolled in the mud saying he could not take it anymore). These episodes were usually handled at the lower levels (peer pressure), but sometimes called for extreme measures such as hospitalization or even being shipped home. Caputo soon realized that the morals and ethics that guided the soldiers were different for different situations. For example, say a plane bombed a village that was suspected of harboring the VC, but was later found out not to be the case. It would be dismissed as an accident of war, but if a platoon entered a similar village and had similar results they would often be held accountable for their actions. He notes also how a person would receive a Purple Heart if he received a wound from an enemy, but would not if it was inflicted by friendly fire. This remains true even today! Caputo says fear is the most dominant emotion on the battlefield and that the desire to douse that fear (revenge) is extremely compelling. He says most people want to flee, but stick around for their friends and to try. Caputo says the rush of battle produced an adrenaline high that was unlike any other, though the sexual climax is close. He said there were those who became adrenaline junkies and would seek combat and began to enjoy it, but they were few. Caputo named blind chance as being the one true god of modern warfare. Caputo relates the story of his mission during Operation Long Lance that ended up destroying the whole village. The attack on the village started innocently enough, but the fire spread and due to the fact they were behind schedule they began torching the rest of the village, they lost their grip on humanity and became a mob. This was the only time that Caputo recalls losing control of his troops. Near the end of the book, Caputo sends his men on a mission to capture some suspected VC and to shot them if they pose any problems. He did this without approval and ended with the two men being killed. It was later found out that they were not VC and Caputo and his men were court-martialed, but given the press that would have resulted had they been convicted the charges were dropped with the exception that Caputo was charged with lying under oath, but he was only given a reprimand, which did not hurt him since he was soon discharged. This shows that though crimes were reported it was rare for them to actuality be convicted. It simply was not in the best interest of the military to do so. Caputo points out many deficiencies in the campaign in Vietnam The leadership of the higher commands early on had the feel of colonial conflicts, like the French who presided before and lost. The tactics seemed to be primarily defensive in nature. No clear plan was initiated, hence the trouble deciding whether or not the Marines were to go to Vietnam or stay in Okinawa (many false alarms). No clear idea of who exactly was the enemy, which was demonstrated by the civil war taking place amongst the South Vietnamese. The average age of the soldier was only 1 compared to 6 for World War II. Insufficient troops were provided to cover battlefronts. The United States had better technology, but it was unable to be used to its full potential against the enemy. Politicians were involved in the war and there was growing dissent in America. All these helped to make victory unattainable. They also helped to cause growing dissent and distress among the troops, which in turn led to the demise of the war. The draft also decreased morale. Caputo and his ilk had joined voluntarily, but many of those in the later years were forced to fight against their wishes. Caputo points out that all men are similar all fear, all die, all stink with death and our reactions are nearly mirrored when in comparable circumstances. He says that men must face battle in order to understand battle. He tries to warn against the evils of warfare, but fears it will go unheeded. I believe he is right. World War I had a tremendous antiwar movement after it was over. People were disillusioned with the whole idea of war and never wanted to repeat it again, but then with the next generation war erupted! Caputo shares his story in the hopes that he and others may develop an understanding of what took place in order to prevent future wars and to justify what he did.
