"The Bean Trees"Book Review

In my opinion Barbara Kingsolver's novel "The Bean Trees" is a story about the idea that a person's life can go through regeneration. Each character in the story has lost something important to them and the idea that through their relationships with one another they can regenerate the missing parts of their lives is a theme of this story. Turtle, who is arguably the main character, has lost perhaps the most in the beginning of the story. This child has been robbed of her innocence, childhood, family and her future. The people she is surrounded by in this story, beginning with Taylor, provide a caring setting for her to be able to grow in, both physically and mentally. This idea of "regeneration" is also evident in the character of Lou-Ann, who has lost her husband, Angel, and more importantly her sense of self-worth. The vulnerability of this character allows the reader to really feel compassion towards her. It is through the influence of Taylor's independence and companionship that Lou-Ann realizes that her worth is not determined by what her husband thinks of her, but what she thinks of herself. She is able to regain her confidence and is eventually able to say no to Angel when he asks her to come live with him.

This theme of growing and changing over time is reflected most symbolically through the "Bean Trees" themselves. The leaves of the trees actually change physically to look like beans, which is why turtle calls them bean trees. Each of the main characters in this story, too, go through a transformation. By the end the characters have grown and changed as a result of having one another to act as a surrogate family. This regenerated family is reiterated by Turtle when she sings her song in the car, and all the people in her new "family" are included.

This novel is brimming with hope and pushes the reader to believe that even in bad times, if you have the support of those around you, you can pull through. I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would because I assumed it was a woman's story. After reading "The Bean Trees" I realize that what this book is about is what it takes to survive, which I believe is love.
