Leaving my country and coming to America was not easy. As much as I was thrilled to finally see New York City, I felt like a traitor leaving behind Poland, the country of my birth. Just before I left, The Solidarity Union managed to overthrow the communist regime and Poland was in the difficult stage of transition into democracy. Despite economic difficulties, Poles were overjoyed with their freedom. Nobody complained about empty shelves in stores, because we all knew that eventually the economy would improve. Now was the time to show one's patriotism by enduring the difficulties and helping to restore free Poland. It was definitely not the time to leave. My parents, however, decided otherwise when they received long awaited green cards from American Embassy in Warsaw. We packed our belongings and set on the journey to the United States of America, the land of freedom and opportunity.Manhattan looked magnificent in its splendor but I hated everything else the food, the customs, and the seemingly rude forwardness of Americans. I wanted everything to be exactly as it was in Poland, safe and familiar. I distanced myself from all Americans with whom I felt I had nothing in common. Even though I now lived here, I was a Pole at heart and vowed never to forsake my allegiance to my country of birth. As years went by, little by little, I submerged myself in American culture. The food began to taste better, the customs made sense, and I began to appreciate the sincerity and friendliness of American people. It was no longer "me and them," now it was "us". I began to realize that it was hypocritical of me to dissociate myself as a Pole and at the same time live off American land and take advantage of all benefits available to American citizens.

Cheap University Papers on The Day I Became an American

I began to ponder whether I could become an American citizen without relinquishing my Polish citizenship. Many people elected to be citizens of more than one countries but I deeply felt that to be a citizen of two countries meant to be a citizen of no country. What would happen if the two countries, one was a citizen of, were at war? Which country's side would I take? I was not able to answer those questions so I put aside my plans to become an American citizen. Then, the unthinkable happened. On September 11, 001 terrorist attacked my country. It is really difficult to describe the rage I felt when this happened. I was shocked and incredulous to learn that some people actually hated the Americans. I felt deep solidarity with the rest of American people. That day I stopped being a Pole and became an American in my heart.

The following is a Process Map for measurements of PJ's coffee and Tea Co and the metrics selected. The product consists of the customer's needs which include reliability, quality, and variety.

Reliability- The internal metric used for reliability was percent of returns or percent of remakes. The metric is appropriate because the customer depends on the service to be reliable, which is the ability to perform the promised service dependably and accurately. By measuring the percent of returns or remakes, this gives the service provider a look at how well they are serving their guests. If they continually have returns or remakes of items, they can conclude they are not efficiently providing a reliable service and thus need to improve this service quality. This measurement could be put into effect by having a computer system that records the number of remakes and reorders.

Quality- The internal metric used here was the percent of items repurchased and the number of repeat customers. This is appropriate because when the quality of a service or its products are absent and do not meet the customer's expectations, the quality of service perceived by the customers is likely to suffer. When the quality is met and it reflects the consumers expectations, their perceptions are enhanced and purchase is likely to occur. By measuring the percentage of items repurchased, management will know what consumers view as quality products and therefore are repurchasing. This measurement would take place by having a system that records the items as they are being purchased. The system would graph the sales and inventory of a certain item that day as well as compare that item to another item's sales and inventory. Management could then view which items are being repurchased more often and which are lagging in sales, which might represent poor quality.

Variety- The percent of different items was selected as a metric for measurement. This measurement was an appropriate selection because some consumers want variety and since consumers do want variety it is imperative that managers are aware of this and provide many options within reason. Managers would keep certain items that do well while eliminating others that do poorly. This measurement would take place by taking an inventory of the different items and keeping track of those items that are sold in the store as well as the drive thru. Management could sample its customers and directly ask if they feel there is enough variety among the menu at PJ's. They could ask what items could be added to improve sales or what items could be eliminated to ultimately reduce costs.

Another process is explaining, which consists of knowledge and clarity.

Knowledge- The metric that was chosen was managerial observation. This was appropriate because although hiring the right people and training them prepares them, actual knowledge is measured by observing or testing. In this case it is observation. If the employee is performing an action incorrectly or misinforms the customer, the manager is there to correct them. This measurement would take place by having a trained manager on duty at all times

Clarity - This customer need is one that is very important for both the customer and the employee. Whether the customer is at the drive thru or is face to face with an employee, this is the first point of service contact or interaction and could determine if a sale is made or not. This may be the time when customers form opinions about quality of the service due to friendliness of employees and other factors. In this example, clarity is illustrated as a customer need and the internal metric is percentage of times an employee has to repeat themselves. This was an appropriate selection because it is important for employees to speak clearly for customers to understand so they perform their role as a customer. If the employee hands them a cup and tells them to serve their own tea and does not speak clearly, the customer cannot and will not effectively perform their job. Therefore this measurement can implemented by managers having employees role play to see if they can perform their role as desired service providers.

The process of service consists of timeliness, convenience, and consistency

Timeliness- The method that was chosen was the average time it takes for a customer to enter and leave the store. This was appropriate because some consumers consider all the benefits they receive in an exchange as well as all sacrifices such as time and effort. Since service providers cannot completely control the number of customers and the length of time it will take for each customer to be served, customers are likely to wait to receive the service. Service providers need to be aware that most consumers hold a range of acceptable times for certain services. If a service consumes that time period they may get frustrated and leave. The measurement would be implemented by installing digital clocks next the register and above the drive thru window. The manager would set a desired time for employees every time an order is placed and the employees would have to meet or beat that desired time.

Convenience- The metric that was chosen was location and hours of operation. There are convenience costs of services. Many customers may have to travel to a service which may become inconvenient for them. If service hours do not coincide with the customer's time availability, they may have to rearrange their schedules. This measurement would take place by managers actually measuring the percentage of customers from their target market who visit their location of business, if it is not many, they could think about offering delivery. The hours of operation could be measured by the amount of customers who visit during those times or those who complain about not being open until a certain hour.

Consistency- The metric that was chosen for this customer need was the percentage of repurchases or straight rebuys. A consumer wants company to have the same quality products every time they shop there. They want service quality and for it to be consistent. The selected metric is appropriate because if their expectations of quality are met at least ninety percent of the time they are likely to repurchase a product or service. Many times with convenience goods such as coffee and food, consumers will do a straight rebuy. As mentioned in the section of quality this measurement would take place by having a system that records the number of identical items repurchased. They are then compared to see which are being purchased more often.

The process of sales consists of stable prices, customization, and value.

Stable Prices - The metric used was percent of increased revenue. Price has to be determined carefully since buyers are likely to use price as an indicator of service quality and costs. Prices too high or too low may set expectations too high or lead to inaccurate thoughts about the quality of the service or product. Consumers expect to have stable prices when purchasing convenience goods such as coffee and food. With stable prices companies aim to retain and gain loyal customers. With loyal customers comes increased revenue through serving them over time. This measurement would take place by measuring and comparing the companies revenues from one year to the next to see if the revenues increased or decreased.

Customization- The percentage of products customized was the internal metric and is appropriate because through customization a firm can create customer loyalty by having the knowledge of what the customers want and expect in the service or product. Through the percentage of customized products, the firm knows exactly how many items they had to develop to fit the customer's needs. The measurement would take place by having a button on the computer system that rings up the order as other and employee manually inputs the desired order. Management could look at this and think about possibly incorporating this creation onto the existing menu.

Value - Value can be defined by the consumer in many different ways and it is the buyer's perception of total value that prompts the willingness to pay a particular price for a service or product. Here we define value as the quality the consumer gets for the price they pay. While the consumer may want convenience, they still wish to receive a high quality item for the price they pay. The company has to present benefits to the consumer. If the firm does this the consumer may translate his perception of the service into value. The internal metric of measuring the percentage of satisfied customers is appropriate because by measuring these customers the firm can get an idea of how their service is perceived and valued. The measurement would take place by using quantitative such as surveys to monitor and track the service performance and to close the gap between customer expectations and perceptions. Managers could walk around the store ask the customers if their service and products were what they expected and how they could possibly change to increase their value. Comment cards could be placed beside the chairs and tables for the customers to fill out and return to management.

The process of delivery contains timeliness and accuracy.

Timeliness- Again, timeliness correlates with responsiveness which is the willingness to help customers and to provide prompt service. Responsiveness and timeliness is communicated to customers by the length of time they have to wait for assistance, answers to questions, or attention to problems. The metric of the average time it takes to make and deliver order was chosen so the company can record the time it take from the time a customer orders an item to the time it takes for them to receive it. By improving this time a customer might notice the service performance and get their attention in a positive way and may exceed their expectations of adequate service. The measurement would take place as mentioned above, by placing a time digital time next to the register and above the drive thru window. Management will set a desired time for the service to be performed. When an order is placed the clock is set and employees need to meet or beat the expected time frame for performance of the service.

Accuracy- accuracy also correlates with reliability which would be for the provider to perform the service dependably and to the standards promised. The internal metric that was chosen for this was the percent of correct orders. This metric is appropriate for the provider to keep track of the number of returns. Customers want to do business with companies that can keep their promise about services they say they can provide. Many companies that do not provide the service that customers think they are buying fail their customers and thus may lose profit. The measurement would take place by having a system that records items when they or are returned or remade. This way management could view the items that employees are having trouble making or items that the customers were not satisfied with. With this information in hand, management could either think about retraining the employees or deleting an item from their menu and save costs.

). The term Renaissance man was coined to describe the genius of Leonardo da Vinci. He was a man of so many accomplishments in so many areas of human endeavor that his like has rarely been seen in human history.Casual patrons of the arts know him as the painter of La Gioconda, more commonly called the Mona Lisa, and of the exquisite Last Supper, painted on the wall of the dining hall in the monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Italy. These paintings alone would have assured him enduring fame as an artist, but they should not obscure the fact that he was also a sculptor, an architect, and a man of science who did serious investigations into the natural and physical sciences, mathematics, mechanics, and engineering. More than 00 years before flying machines were perfected, Leonardo devised plans for prototypes of an airplane and a helicopter. His extensive studies of human anatomy were portrayed in anatomical drawings, which were among the most significant achievements of Renaissance science. His remarkable illustrations of the human body elevated drawing into a means of scientific investigation and exposition and provided the basic principles for modern scientific illustration.

Life of Leonardo The life of Leonardo da Vinci can be divided into five distinct periods his childhood and youth in Florence, Italy; his first stay in Milan from 148 to 14; the second Florentine period from 1500 to 1506; his second stay in Milan from 1506 to 151; and his last six years from 151 to 151, which were divided equally between Rome and Amboise, France, where he worked for King Francis I. Leonardo was born in 145 on his fathers family estate at Vinci, near Florence. He grew up and was educated on the estate. When he was 15 his father apprenticed him to the artist Andrea del Verrocchio in Florence. Under Verrocchio he studied painting, sculpture, and the mechanical arts. In the nearby workshop of the artist Antonio Pollaiuolo he began his interest in anatomy. Leonardo was accepted into the painters guild at Florence in 147 and remained in the city for the next ten years. Even in this early period of his life, Leonardos mastery of his art was evident, especially in two unfinished paintings St. Jerome and The Adoration of the Magi. There were also a number of pen and pencil drawings that gave evidence of his great skill in sketching. Many of these drawings were of a technical nature pumps, military weaponry, and other mechanical apparatus. First service in Milan. In 148 Leonardo was hired by the duke of Milan, Ludovico Sforza, to be artist and engineer in residence. In this capacity he was constantly kept busy as a painter and sculptor, though many of his paintings and all of his sculptures remained unfinished. He was also frequently consulted by workmen in the fields of architecture, fortifications, and weaponry; and he served as a hydraulic and mechanical engineer. It was while he was in Milan that the full versatility of his genius began to unfold, and the full range of his interests in the world of mankind and nature in general became evident. Through his remarkable ability to understand what he saw, he determined to compose a unified theory of the world and to illustrate it in a series of voluminous noteboooks. Unfortunately his relentless pursuit of scientific knowledge forced him to leave unfinished many of his planned artistic creations. Today they are known primarily from drawings in the notebooks. In his 17 years in Milan, Leonardo completed only six paintings two portraits, the Last Supper, two versions of The Virgin of the Rocks, and a decorative ceiling painting in the Castello Sforzesco. Other commissioned paintings either were not done or have disappeared. Return to Florence. Ludovico Sforza was driven from power by a French army in 14. At the end of the year, or early in 1500, Leonardo returned to his home city after visits to Mantua and Venice. After his long absence, he was received as an honored and renowned artist. In Florence, as in Milan, he was commissioned to do a number of paintings, but other interests and tasks kept him from finishing them. The most notable work to survive from this period was the Mona Lisa, which is now in the Louvre in Paris. His largest commission, a huge mural entitled Battle of Anghiari for the Palazzo Vecchio, Florences city hall, remained unfinished. Other technical matters took him away from his art. For ten months during 150, Leonardo served as military adviser and engineer under Cesare Borgia in the latters campaign to subdue the Papal States. He traveled through Borgias territories, surveyed them, and made sketches of city plans and topographical maps that laid the groundwork for the field of modern cartography. Back in Florence in 150, Leonardo worked on the complicated engineering project of diverting the Arno River around Pisa in order to deprive that city of its access to the sea. The plan did not work, but it became the basis of a later project (never realized) to build a canal from Florence to the sea. He also busied himself with dissections of corpses at the hospital of Santa Maria Nuova, made observations on the flight of birds, and continued studies of the properties of water and its currents. Second stay in Milan. In May 1506 Charles dAmboise, governor of Milan for the king of France, invited Leonardo to return to that city. His work in painting and sculpture over the next seven years remained mostly in the planning stage in sketches that he drew but that never became paintings or statues but his scientific work flourished. He continued his notebooks with observations and drawings of human anatomy, optics, mechanics, and botanical studies. Last years. During the years 151 to 1516, Leonardo was in Rome at the invitation of Cardinal Giuliano de Medici, brother of Pope Leo X. Some of the greatest artists of the time were at work in Rome for the church. Donato Bramante was building St. Peters Basilica; Michelangelo was working on the tomb of Pope Julius; and Raphael was painting the rooms of the popes apartments. Leonardo, on the other hand, was not kept busy. He executed a map of the Pontine Marshes near Rome, suggesting that perhaps he was involved in a planned reclamation project. He also did some sketches for a Medici residence in Florence that was never built. Otherwise he was lonely and unoccupied. Thus in 1516, at the age of 65, he accepted an invitation from Francis I, king of France, to leave Italy and work for him. Leonardo spent the last three years of his life in the palace of Cloux, near the kings residence at Amboise, near Tours. He was given the title of painter, architect, and mechanic of the Kingand given freedom of action in what he wanted to do. His duties were few. He virtually abandoned painting to concentrate on his scientific studies. He finished the final drafts of his treatise on painting and worked on the study of anatomy. He also did a variety of sketches, including Visions of the End of the World, that testified to his undiminished ability as an artist. For the king he drew plans for a palace and garden at Romorantin and made sketches for court festivals. Otherwise the king left him alone and treated him as an honored guest. On May , 151, Leonardo died at Cloux and was buried in the palace church. During the French Revolution the church, along with many other national monuments, was devastated and eventually was torn down. The whereabouts of Leonardos remains is no longer known. Leonardos Legacy

Paintings and sculptures. Only 17 of the paintings that have survived can definitely be attributed to Leonardo, and not all of them are finished. Yet he is deservedly considered one of the greatest painters of all time. He excelled in inventiveness, technique, drawing ability, use of light, shadow, and color. No sculpture survives that can be definitely attributed to Leonardo, but from the numerous sketches for unfinished projects it is known that he brought to sculpture the same ingenuity and inventiveness that he gave to painting. Two of his unfinished works were statues of men on horses one a monumental figure in bronze to be erected in honor of Francesco Sforza, founder of the Sforza dynasty. He spent 1 years planning this statue, only to have the metal used for making cannon instead. But many sketches remain, and they give adequate evidence of Leonardos concept of sculpture. The anatomical exactness of the horse, the proportions, and the feeling of movement in the sketches profoundly influenced the design of equestrian statues in the 17th century. Architecture and engineering. Although concerned with architectural and engineering matters all of his adult life, Leonardos role was primarily that of adviser. Here again it is through sketches in the notebooks that the excellence of his perceptions and his thorough familiarity with all the architectural and engineering problems of his time have become known. He was associated with the best architects of his day and was in close touch with major construction projects. His studies for large-scale canal projects in the Arno River region of Italy demonstrate that he was an expert in hydraulic engineering. The notebooks. The greatest literary legacy any painter has ever bequeathed to the world is contained in the voluminous notebooks of Leonardo. His writing program began during the first stay in Milan, specifically between 140 and 145, when his strong inclination toward scientific studies showed itself. The notebooks were to occupy him for the rest of his life. In them he envisaged treating four major themes a treatise on the science of painting, a treatise on architecture, a book on the elements of mechanics, and a general work on human anatomy. To these themes were eventually added notes on his studies of botany, geology, aerology, and hydrology. Leonardos intent was to synthesize all of his investigations with a unified world view based on his perceptions. He believed that true knowledge derived from what he called how to see,not from philosophical speculations. Leonardos notebooks are distinctive for two reasons the relation of illustration to text and his use of writing. In the normal illustrated book, pictures amplify and clarify the text, but it is the text that contains the basic information. With him it was the reverse. Although his language was clear and expressive, Leonardo always gave precedence to illustration over the written word. The drawings, therefore, do not illustrate the text, but the text serves to explain the pictures. Mirror writing, as the term implies, means putting words down on paper in such a way that they can be read normally only when the page is held up to a mirror. Leonardo was quite adept at this, probably partly because he was left-handed. The reason for using mirror writing is uncertain because he did not intend to keep his notebooks a secret. Exactly how many notebooks Leonardo composed is not known. In all, 1 have been preserved. In addition to these, there are other bundles of documents, or codexes, by Leonardo that have found their way into various European museums. One of the most exciting finds of the 0th century was the discovery early in 167 of 700 lost pages of manuscripts and drawings in the Spanish National Library in Madrid. These pages of Leonardos work, bound in two volumes, had been missing for about 00 years. They contain, among other things, sketches of the large equestrian statue for the tomb of Francesco Sforza and drawings of complex gears, hydraulic machines, and other devices

For this reason change results in different outcomes for everyone. Some people may embrace change and find it to be positive, whereas other people may resist change and it may have negative implications for them. These alterations and modifications that occur in our lives affect our perspective towards situations. This change in perspectives can be seen in Peter Skrzynecki's Immigrant Chronicle's and can be attributed to life experiences such as migration and war. An altered perspective could also occur due to maturity as Jane Yolen describes in Briar Rose. In Craig Lahiff's film Black and White it is the media that has the power to change the individuals' perspectives. It is not only individuals whose perspectives can be manipulated but as Flacco shows in Humans in Their Environment people can attempt to change a whole societies viewpoint. No matter what way change in perspectives is looked at, it is always there and is manipulating the ways in which we look at situations. The film Black and White is based on a true story of an Aboriginal man, Max Stuart, being convicted of raping and murdering a nine year old white girl in Australia in the 150's. As was the accepted attitude at the time, the entire town condemned him, however with the influence of the media the communities perspectives began to change and they began to be less discriminatory. Not only is the title Black and White used to symbolise the different skin colours but also the emotions felt by the town. Anything black is thought to be evil, as Lahiff conveys through his use of language when a white person was told that they have a "black heart". Once the perspectives of the town have changed he still continues to focus on language by using the clich "we realise that life isn't only black and white; there are many shades of grey in between".

Skrzynecki also uses colours to display emotions in his poems ‘Crossing the Red Sea' and ‘Postcard'. ‘Crossing the Red Sea' is the journey of migrants from Europe to Australia in the 150's. The migrants see "red banners" which symbolise the sunset and the hope for the future past the horizon. They also discuss "red poppies" which is symbolic of the horrors of war and the martyrdom experienced by fallen soldiers. The "blood-rimmed horizon" is a memory of the past that they will never be able to erase from their minds. This poem shows the processes which are experienced by all individuals in their lives. Processes of loss, change and rejuvenation‘Postcard' is a poem about the persona receiving a postcard of modern Warsaw from a friend which resulted in a search for identity. Throughout this poem Skrzynecki also uses repetition of the colour red to display emotions that the persona was feeling. By talking about "red buses" and "red gables" the responder sees how the historical land of Warsaw has changed and modernised. The integration of the colour red also refers to the communistic society that Poland became after World War . The poet discusses how Warsaw "survived in my mind" through stories told by his parents as he "never knew" it. His perspective changed as he thought that through memory he had a deep connection with Poland however he now realises that he was wrong. Briar Rose also deals with memory and the differences that may exist between history and memory. This story incorporates the horrors of the Holocaust with the fairy tale of Sleeping Beauty. The structure includes flashbacks to the past, which show how children's attitudes change with maturity and life experiences. The book is given a magical element as the fairy tale theme is carried through by having a beautiful daughter with two ugly step sisters who sets out on a quest. Memory and time are seen to be powerful tools throughout this novel as "time heals wounds, but it doesn't erase the scars". The beautiful daughters' perspective changes towards her grandma as she compares her memories with the history of the time; this is seen through the flashbacks that Yolen uses.Individuals aren't the only people who can have their perspectives changed as Flacco demonstrates in his excerpt from Burnt Offerings. This satirical approach shows how one protestor in "regulation jungle green overalls" attempted to change the viewpoints of an entire society. The perspective of the reader is also questioned in the opening sentence due to Flacco stating his personal opinion of "environmental consciousness being taken a little too far". The outcome of this change had a negative effect for the protestor as "he was turned into paper pulp and made into a minor article". This can be seen as a metaphor of change not always being productive, however it also shows that change is inevitable even to those who reject it and try to prevent it. Irony and black humour are techniques that Flacco has used to show the unsuccessful attempt made to change the community's perspective. These four texts Immigrant Chronicles, Black and White, Briar Rose and Burnt Offerings all show how individual perspectives change due to significant events in peoples lives. Whether the outcome of the event is positive or negative the persons outlook is altered which in turn creates awakenings

Republicanism is a radical idealogy duplicated from the Roman Empire. It focuses on spreading power throughout ones government to achieve good life and social morality. Republicanism is run for the people, by the people. The main principals of Republicanism are that it is not a monarchy. It goes against everything monarchies stood for. Republicicanism gives the common man a say in how the things that effect his life are ran. Through Republicanism, society has found a new and inventive way to govern a country that is precise and effective.

Repulicanism and Republics are proven to be the most trustworthy and successful forms of government in the world. today. The foremost example of this is the United States of America. The most powerful country on the planet began as a small republic. The guidelines of Republicanism guided the infant United States to the world power it is today. As Mr. Thomas Jefferson stated, A government is republican in proportion as every member composing it has his equal voice in the direction of its concerns not indeed in person, which would be impracticable beyond the limits of a city or small township, but by representatives chosen by himself and responsible to him at short periods. Mr. Jefferson is explaining one of the many benefits of republicanism, that every person has a voice. The population elects representatives that go before the heads of state and demand what changes the common people are asking for. This keeps everyone envolved and not disgruntled. Another highlight of republicanism is that it has different branches of government. Each branch has the ability to overide another branch, thus preventing one branch from getting to strong and toppling the government. To quote Thomas Jefferson again, The Republican is the only form of government which is not eternally at open or secret war with the rights of mankind. Jefferson could not be more correct, for Republicanism is fair to all. Each citizen is entitled and granted their own rights in the Republican form of government. Republicanism does not clash with its citizens, it embraces them and allows them to make decisions that better the country as a whole.

To conclude, the only logical form of government to use in this brave new world is Republicanism. Republicanism has proven to be a stable and long lasting form of government. Forms of government such as Monarchies and Communism have been unreliable and led to their countries demise or poor economical conditions. Yet, Republicanism can lead to a prosperis and stable economy. It is in the best interests of the people of this new country that Republicanism is chosen as the form of government because that is the only form with which the people, as well as country, can prosper.

A Non-Profit Organization

Tonya Whitlock-Robinson

Research Paper

Professor Malone

What is a nonprofit organization? A nonprofit is a tax-exempt organization that serves the public interest. The purpose of a nonprofit organization is to be charitable, educational, scientific, religious or literary. Nonprofit organizations do not declare a profit. They utilize all their revenue available, after paying normal operating expenses, to serve the public's interest. A nonprofit organization can be unincorporated or incorporated. An unincorporated nonprofit cannot be given federal tax-exempt status. When a nonprofit organization is incorporated, it has many similar characteristics with corporations that are for profit. The main difference is that nonprofit organizations do not have shareholders. When a nonprofit organization is given a tax-exempt status, it is exempt from paying federal income taxes. Most state and local taxes, property tax and tax on assets are also exempt. This is not always the case. Some states have different rules. Nonprofit organizations have paid and volunteer staff. They can have clients, can offer products and services, they have a need for revenue, they can advertise their business, and they also must be concerned with overall customer satisfaction. Customers can be those they assist or those who contribute donations to support their operation, programs and services. Nonprofit is still a business that must serve the public's interest. There is a perception that working for a nonprofit organization is limiting yourself as far as salary. This is true in most cases, but universities, hospitals, and large national charities are examples of organizations that can be "nonprofit" but have pay scales similar to any for-profit corporation. CEOs of major hospitals can earn as much as $500,000 to over $1,000,000 in salaries and bonuses. University presidents can make similar salaries. However, local training centers and food banks will be places where a lower salary will be supplemented by payment from personal satisfaction that you helped a person learn to read or a family to have enough food for each person to eat a decent meal.

Children Now is the type of organization that was just described. They are a research and action organization dedicated to assuring that children grow up in economically secure families, where parents can go to work and be confident that their children are supported by quality healthcare coverage, a positive media environment, a good education early on, and safe, enriching after school activities that they can participate in. Their programs reach parents, lawmakers, concerned citizens, business, media and community leaders. These various partnerships have brought about positive changes for children. Children Now was founded in 188. It has been a leader in developing new strategies and ways to move children up as a higher priority on the nation's agenda. Children Now is recognized for its policy expertise and its up-to-date information on the status of children, as well as its outstanding work with the media to improve the ways that new coverage of children is presented. Their accomplishments include a reform to the California's child support system and new children's health care benefits. They have had award-winning media campaigns that were designed to motivate and help individuals to make a difference for children; and higher quality coverage of children's issues in the media. This is being done by ongoing work and convening of media leaders. Recognized for its expertise in media as tool for change, Children Now designs its strategies to improve children's lives while at the same time helping America build a sustained commitment to putting children first. They are able to be an effective and independent voice for children because of the generous support from their many donors. Children Now is a private, 501 (c) nonprofit charity. They are financed through foundation grants, individual donations, and support from the corporate community.

Contributions are a significant revenue source for most non-profit organizations. Organizations like Children Now often refer to contributions as public support. The Statement of Financial Accounting Standards (SFAS) Numbers 116 & 117 tells how non-governmental nonprofits accounts for contributions, and how they present their financial statements. When the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) introduced SFAS Numbers 116 & 117, it was the first time FASB issued statements regarding how nonprofit organizations should account for contributions and how these contributions are presented in financial statements. Specifically, SFAS 116 defines how donors and receivers account for donations. SFAS 117 further clarified generally accepted accounting principles with regard to how nonprofits report contribution information in financial statements. The intent of SFAS 116 & 117 is to enhance the relevance, understandability and comparability of nonprofits' financial statements. Donors, members, creditors, and others who provide resources to nonprofits primarily use these reports. The focus of SFAS 117 financial statement reporting is now on "net asset" classification. The new net assets class aggregate contributions with like donor-imposed restrictions, and are unrestricted, temporarily restricted, and permanently restricted. Unrestricted net assets are the portions of net assets not temporarily or permanently restricted. This category may include assets that previously were temporarily restricted, but the donor stipulation has been met. Temporarily restricted net assets are the portion of net assets whose use is limited by donor-imposed restrictions on the timing and/or purpose of use of the donated resources. Permanently restricted net assets are the portions of net assets whose use is limited by donor-imposed restrictions that are permanent in nature. That means restrictions that cannot be fulfilled by either passage of time or by actions of the organization. SFAS No. 116 requires contributions to be recognized as revenues in the period that they are received or unconditionally promised. Contributions are recognized at this point even if the use of the resources is restricted. Although SFAS 117 does not encourage or discourage further classifications such as operating and non-operating etc., if the organization uses such terms these classifications must, at a minimum, be included in a financial statement that reports the change of net assets for the period.

Children Now account for their revenues and expenditures by using a financial statement similar to the Statement of Revenues, Expenses, and Changes in Net Assets. This financial statement is prepared on an annual basis. Contributed Support, Other Revenue, and Expenditures are distinguished in the statement. In the statement below, Contributed support is presented in detail because there are relatively few contributors. Other Revenue and Expenditures are presented in a summary format. Had there had been many more significant types of contributors, they might have been reported in summary form as well and supported by a detailed schedule.

Children Now

Financial Statement

For the Year Ended December 1, 00

Contributed Support

Foundations $1,006,40

Individual Contributors 76,811

Board of Directors 51,500

Corporations 156,157

Total Public Support $1,1,408

Total Contributed Support & Other Revenue $1,,87

Expenditures

General & Administrative $ 446,16

Programs 1,46,56

Fundraising 54,487

Total Expenditures $,448,5

Changes in Net Assets ($1,108,54)

Net Assets at January 1, 00 $,47,0

Net Assets at December 1, 00 $,88,480

Expenditures result in decreases in unrestricted net assets. Expenditures must be disclosed by functional classification either in the Statement of Activities or in the footnotes

· Program Services generally include goods and services distributed to beneficiaries, customers, or members to fulfill the purpose of the mission of the organization.

· General and Administrative Activities include general oversight, business management, general record keeping, budgeting, finance and other management and administrative activities.

· Fund raising includes activities for publicizing and conducting fund-raising campaigns, maintaining donor mailing lists, conducting special fund preparing and distributing activities involved in the solicitation of contributions from individuals, foundations, government agencies, etc.

Classifying not-for-profit organizations as governmental or nongovernmental is essential because government not-for-profit organizations must apply SFAS Nos. 116, 117, 14 and other not-for-profit standards. Nongovernmental not-for-profit organizations are required to report in accordance with these SFAS. Also properly identifying the type of nonprofit organization is important because of the slight differences in the accounting and financial reporting principles that apply to each. The two types of organizations are Voluntary Health and Welfare Organizations (VHWOs) and Other Not-for-Profit Organizations (ONPOs).

Voluntary Health and Welfare Organizations are formed to provide various kinds of health, welfare, and community services financed by voluntary contributions from the public. VHWOs are tax-exempt, organized for the public benefit, supported largely by public contributions and operated on a not-for-profit basis. Voluntary Health and Welfare organizations are required to continue to report information about expenses by functional and natural classifications in matrix format in a separate financial statement.

The Other Not for Profit Organizations operates essentially as business enterprises for the direct economic benefit of their members or stockholders. These entities are required to report functional classifications and are encouraged, but are not required , to provide information about the natural classification of expenses.

Children Now would fall in the category of being a Voluntary Health and Welfare Organization. The reasons why are clear

· Their purpose- to meet the community health, welfare, and social service needs of children.

· Their voluntary nature there is no fee charged.

· Their relationship to resource providers people who contribute to Children Now are not the primary recipients of services or benefits that they offer.

Through innovative research and communication strategies, Children Now promote pioneering solutions to improve the lives of America's children. Their programs focus particular attention on the needs of children who are poor or at risk. The mission is to improve conditions for all children by making them the top priority across the nation.

For the reasons that I do disagree, my opinions are, I don't think Mexican immigrants are taken advantage of American jobs, education, medical care, and welfare benefits. If so, Mexican immigrants are not alone in disturbing to the future. You cannot judge all Mexican immigrants just by one little mini- riot.

In my opinion I don't think Mexican immigrants are taken advantage of any, and all American benefits. From what I know is a fact Mexican immigrants are struggling for jobs in the U.S that pay good enough to support their family. Being immigrants causes them to have jobs that pay much less then any other worker in the United States. As far as education, most immigrants stop attending school up to their senior year in high school, because of the advantage of not having a Social Security number, to get them into the good colleges of their choice. As well as medical care and welfare benefits, it is a fact that Mexican immigrants are not the only ones receiving them, but also African- Americans, and Americans themselves. So why is the blame just on Mexican immigrants, when half of Americans are just lazy themselves to get a job, leaving an open opportunity for those immigrants to get those jobs. And work hard to live a stable life for them and their offspring. If so, some Mexican immigrants are not just the only ones who are disturbing to the U.S in the future. But in the United States, every color of immigrants are going to be coming to live and mix in this country causing some what of disturbance. It's not just immigrants. But the U.S citizens to, who are raping and killing the fellow Americans. The homeless you see in the streets are also citizens who become disturbing to the U.S by stealing and begging for money, not just Mexican immigrants. But any immigrants period! The United States has to stop the accusing on one kind of group, when the problem in also including themselves.Because of one riot happening during the Gold Cup soccer match, doesn't necessarily mean that all Mexicans, Mexican immigrants are all alike. Its' like the saying "Never judge a book by it's cover." Which in reality, the U.S is just pointing at one culture. Some people might have been the total opposite and cheered for the United States, rather then for Mexico and pelting them.

Write my Essay on Mexican immigrants

All what is written in this essay is my reasons why I disagree with the article I read. Stating my reasons that the Mexican immigrants are not just coming to the United States to take advantage of any American benefits, and then disrespecting it as if the U.S meant nothing but land and water to them.

Affirmative action was developed in the mid 160's to offer equal opportunity employment and education to women and minorities. These policies required that active measures be taken so that minorities had the same opportunities in career advancements and education that were nearly exclusive to whites (Brunner 1). In 00, affirmative action is still present in our society. Minorities as well as females are given jobs and admissions into colleges and universities that are not totally based on hard they have worked, but rather on their race and gender. Because affirmative action is an unjust law that offers minorities education or employment based on race or gender and not merit, this promotional practice is a form of reverse discrimination that should be abolished.Focusing on jobs and education in particular, affirmative action policies required the active measures be taken to ensure that females, blacks, and other minorities enjoyed the same opportunities that had been available only to whites males. This practice slowly turned into a blatant form of reverse discrimination. Institutions are so anxious to raise the number of blacks in their ranks that they overlook over qualified applicants when admission decisions involving blacks. In the 15 court case Gratz v. Bollinger, reported on Adversity. net, Jennifer Gratz applied to University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. Gratz's application was rejected because she was white. Minority students with lower test scores were admitted ahead of Gratz to meet the University's racial enrollment goals (adversity.net/education__michu_1.html). In this situation, Jennifer Gratz is more qualified than the minorities in question that are granted admission. The minorities admitted to the university are clearly selected based on their race and not their educational merit. Minorities are receiving the spoils for a job they did not do, rather than what they did do.

Affirmative action has also led to other inconveniences in the work place and on college campuses. As stated in the article "Race and Rage" by Howard Fineman in the April 5, 15 issue of Newsweek, 5- year old widow Janice Camarena, a commuting student at San Bernardino Valley College, wanted to attend English 101 at an appropriate hour. For the single mother of three, the only convenient hour was 11 a.m. The only problem was she is white and the 11 a.m. section of classes was designated for African- Americans. Bearing a neutral label, the class was actually part of a "Black Bridge" remedial program of writing instruction that Camarena could not sign up for (Fineman ). This unfair action barred an entire race from a class based on the color of their skin.

Several actions nationwide are being taken to put an end to affirmative action. In Florida, the state university system's Board of Regents voted 1-0 to replace racial and gender preferences with a plan to grant university admission to the top 0 percent of high school seniors. The new plan also decreases reliance on SAT scores. This will increase the admission chances of disadvantaged students. On average, blacks do not score as well on the SATs as Whites or Asian Americans. Under Florida's former admission policies, universities could use race as a factor in deciding student admissions (Sharp 1A). Other states, such as Washington and California, have also taken the advancements necessary to fight against reverse discrimination. In California, voters in an Election Day referendum approved Proposition 0. Proposition 0 sought to eliminate race, sex, or ethnicity preferences in state hiring practices, unconstitutional (Sharp 1A). Fifty-five percent of California voters backed the proposal during November elections (Compton's Encyclopedia). Proposition 0 applies to cities, counties, public schools and colleges. As reported by Deborah Sharp, in USA Today, 6 states voted on measures intended to repeal or roll back affirmative action programs.

In conclusion, affirmative action was developed over 0 years to promote the civil rights of other and a color-blind society whereas race is not a factor in job placement or education. Our society has come a long way since the 160's and affirmative action is no longer a process that is needed. It has only become an unjust law to society. Affirmative action offers minorities education or employment based on race or gender and not merit, this promotional practice is a blatant form of reverse discrimination that has caused an inconvenience in today's society and should be abolished.

In the novel A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess, the prison and government apply a special treatment called the Ludovico's Technique to criminals to reform them and make them good. The treatment makes it so the criminal has no choice but to be good or he will suffer physical pain. Even Beethoven's "The Ninth" is considered evil after the treatment is applied. However, considering what the criminal must have done to deserve the technique, it is fair and just and should continue to be used on criminals. The Ludovico's technique can be looked at from two viewpoints. The first is a humanistic and idealistic view. This view sees the technique as a cruel and intolerable act. No one should be forced to live a life without choices, and the reformed criminal's only choice is to be good. Although all people should be good, everyone occasionally has a bad thought he or she cannot control. Having these thoughts does not mean that he or she will act upon them, and because of that, they do not get punished for it. However, Alex cannot even have a bad thought or he will get a sick and painful feeling. Since he cannot do any bad, the chaplain believes, "He will be your true Christian…ready to turn the other cheek, ready to be crucified rather than crucify, sick to the very heart at the thought even of killing a fly"(1). In addition to not being able to have bad thoughts, Alex cannot even listen to his favorite music without becoming terribly ill. The videos Alex watches are accompanied by Beethoven's "The Ninth" and therefore, it too is now associated with evil. The pain he gets from the music is so unbearable that he attempts to take his own life rather than endure it any longer. Something that makes this treatment inefficient is that it leaves the patient helpless. One cannot defend oneself against other attackers after being treated. Anyone could just assault the patient knowing that he or she would be in too much pain if they tried to defend themselves. Many would say that if the treatment makes life so bad that you would consider killing yourself, then it should be gotten rid of. Others do not care about an individual human's rights and feelings, but only about the results of the technique. In the pragmatic view, the treatment of the criminal is of no concern. "We are not concerned with motive, with the higher ethics. We are concerned only with cutting down crime"(16). As long as the rest of the people are protected from crime, any consequences that the criminal must endure are okay. When Alex tries to do even the most insignificant act of evil, it is nearly impossible for him to do due to the pain he is in. However, Alex chose his own path and must live with the consequences. He did not know what he was getting into when he signed the agreement, but it is his own fault for not reading it over. Even if the Ludovico technique becomes forced upon the prisoners in the future, it will still be fair. The criminals must have done something horrible to get in prison and any treatment the prisons choose to give them is perfectly okay. The Ludovico's Technique seems to be a good way to cut back on crime and it should be used on more criminals. It makes the world a safer place for people that are actually good on their own free will. It does not matter if the criminal has no choices. When he did have choices, he made the wrong ones and committed horrible acts. Crime deserves punishment, and things should not be taken lightly. Prisons are too good to be called a punishment. The criminal is put into a cell and is given food and clothing for as long as he is there. Many homeless would purposely commit a crime to be given that kind of treatment. Not only is this an unfair punishment, it is bad for citizens as well. We are the people who pay for the prison's food and facilities with our taxes. So even when the criminal is put away, he is still doing damage to us. Forcing the Ludovico's Technique on the criminals would eliminate the need for prisons. The former criminals would be out in the free world and we would not have to pay more taxes for prisons. Many people say that there is a violent phase for boys in their youth which is why they do the bad things they do, but what about all of the adult criminals? It is not as if the only people who commit crimes are teenagers who will grow out of their violent phase. Perhaps a few revisions could be made so that the Ludovico's Technique would be more efficient. Maybe if the treatment was only applied to adults, then there would be no doubt that the treatment is needed. There would be no arguing that the person may eventually get over his destructive phase. The second thing is the music. Making Beethoven's " The Ninth" considered evil is going too far. Alex nearly died because of that song. What's to stop other people from playing it in public and causing pain to anyone nearby who underwent the treatment? As long as those two details are corrected, the Ludovico's Technique should be enforced.

Order Custom Essay on clockwork orange

The novel gives enough information about Ludovico's Technique so that one can form an opinion on it. By the end, it is hard not to feel sympathetic towards Alex. However, when you think about the people that Alex hurt, or any victims in real life, it makes you feel differently about the criminal. The criminal did wrong to someone, so there should be an equal punishment for that action. Ludovico's Technique serves as justice for the victims and should be used on all hardened criminals.

Enron was willing to make the huge investment due to following reasons firstly, from the political perspective, the available investing environment has engaged. By the 10¡¯s, India experienced the ideological changes, government embraced a free market approach, including deregulations and loosening of foreign direct investment( FDI). Also Rao¡¯s government allowed foreign private company to set power projects with no restrictions. (Hill, 00. pp 14). This was a good opportunity for Enron, the largest US natural gas company to exploit the India market, as the local government showed a open attitude for FDI; secondly, India¡¯ energy(power, fuel, gas) problems were serious, they lacked integrated supply system and efficient capacity. These shortages required developers to facilitate some significant investments, because since 10¡¯s India economy revealed a rising trend, more capacities would be needed in national constructions, so there must be some one or some company to shoulder the task in order to meet the customers¡¯ demands in future years. Furthermore the state of Maharashtra has political stability and economic growth. It does exist high risks in building the power project, but Enron might consider the benefits are possibly overcome all costs; thirdly, from the perspective of the corporation itself, Enron implemented its worldwide expansion in energy projects, especially in developing countries. Therefore India as a big market in Asia would reasonably attracted Enron¡¯s FDI, and Enron might take full advantages of its present dominance to create their international business, not only getting profits but also help the renascent economy in India. Thus the investment should be a reciprocal trade. The major long-run benefits that Enron foreseen are carving out the way to enter the Asian markets, and India is the preferred channel of distribution. As the Dabhol Project need long time to build and be put into use, the first-mover advantage for Enron company is sustainable, they could easily set up barriers in the market. The benefits are not possible to compensate for the risks involved, because this is a really high risky project. According to authorities, financially the India project has been a disaster, banks that are involved in it have approximately $1.5 billion in loans and loan guarantees that remain outstanding, and they are threatening to seize the plant outright.( http//www.irtk.org/enron.html). Enron actually could not possess the ability of solvency, because the investment is too big and even they signed some contracts with India government or US government about the compensation afterwards. It is uncertain whether those governments could really fulfil their roles to protect. Once the project failed, it is not possible for Enron to find another buyer

As the Sun lifts itself above the horizon and the beams of light penetrate through the creviced misty clouds, I rise from my deep mysterious slumber. I wake up to the soft sound of dripping water trickling down a leaf into a small puddle, and the soft singing of birds. It is my most favourite part of the day, the singing of birds and to be able to look at the beauty of the vast expanse of my home calms my soul.I climb down my soft bed of virescent leaves and start my day by hauling my stalwart leathery feet to the riverbank. This is where I start every day of my life, I leap into the great plunge pool that nature's waterfall has created for me. The freezing cold water refreshes me and speeds up the slow process of waking up. While doing this I cogitate about what the day could hold for me but most importantly, food!As I draw myself out of the icy pool of water I stretch my robust arms and breathe in the tepid tranquillising air. I saunter back to the site and carefully pick up the long spear I had hidden under the large banana leaves. My spear is the most important and precious possession to me, in-fact it's my only possession. Without it, I would not be able to cope with this struggle I call life. Now that I am revitalised and properly awake I move on to the most wearisome part of the day. I must travel six hundred thousand steps towards the rising sun to a place I call the Lake of Death. It is this lake that allows for my very survival to continue. I have become ever dependent on the Lake as it provides me with food. Food is not easily retrieved though. I move into the long grass and lie on my thin grumbling belly with my spear close to my side. I now wait for the helpless creature upon which I will bestow my uncompassionate hunger on, to appease its thirst from the lake. That will be the time to strike, but for now I wait. Only very occasionally a decent sized creature would fall into my most cunning trap since the lake is so big, realising this makes me impatient. The sun is now at its highest point. Its heat torments me, with the lake only being a small distance away and my throat as dry as a bone I long for a small sip of its reviving water. Alas, I fear leaving my post to quench my thirst. I have been waiting for some sort of creature for so long, to get up and risk what I came to the lake for would only be foolish.

The Sun starts to lower itself from its high throne in the sky and the air begins to cool and dampen. The wind picks up its slow gentle breeze and as I convince myself that my journey to the lake has been in vain I hear a soft muffled sound of dead leaves bending. My heart stops. My eyes widen and my hearing suddenly feels as if it became acute. "Where did the sound come from? Where? " I wait and not too long after, I hear the same sound, slightly louder in my left ear. I slowly turn my head but cannot really see anything through the tall tree-like blades of grass. "Could this finally be what I came for?" The sounds slowly became more frequent until they stop dead in front of me. I know that now is my chance, I slowly lift my head above the grass and I am amazed at my luck. Before me are two fully-grown gazelles, both with their back turned to me drinking from the lake. They are the finest specimens of gazelles I have ever seen. Their soft brown fur glistens of the light reflected from the water with great magnificence. As one gazelle drinks from the lake the other gazelle stands up tall and proud waiting for it. It is as if it is waiting for the first gazelle to finish, as if it is trying to be polite. It doesn't matter though, only one is going to leave the lake alive. I slowly shuffle onto my feet, hold the spear in my right hand fully stretched behind me and stealthily move closer to my two unaware victims. I stop thirty steps behind them and wait one last time. The gazelles abruptly stop drinking and pull their majestic heads up from the water. They suspect something! Their ears were moving from side to side as are their heads. "I have wasted enough time" were my thoughts so without hesitation I throw my spear with all the strength I have. While doing so I trip and fall. After hitting the ground I look back at the spear and then gradually walk to it. I stand over it and then pull it out of one of the gazelle's neck. Blood runs into the lake which make it turn into a cold bloody red. I do not know whether to be proud for being triumphant or to feel disgraceful for killing such a beautiful creature. I do not want to think about it so I pick it up, throw it over my shoulder, take a quick drink from another part of the lake and start my walk home. I hold both of its back feet in one hand and my spear in the other and start my walk back home.As I walk back to my site my mind ties itself up only with the reprehensible thoughts of the unfortunate creature which now lays lifeless on my shoulder. I rub the cold sweat off my nose. I cannot help myself to do anything except recall how the defenceless creature looked like while it was still alive and compare it to how it looks like now. Small droplets of moisture from my skin now ran down the side of my soiled head, I try to ignore them. I have never felt sympathy for any creature I ever needed for my own survival so why is it different this time? I now realise that my back is now completely soaked, "What's going on? Why am I so wet?" I stop walking and look up at the sky. All thoughts of the gazelle slowly evanesce from my mind, I am in trouble!Dark thick clouds fill the night sky almost like a thick blanket. The reason why I feel wet is because a storm is brewing. It is only a soft shower now but I am familiar with the perilous clouds I see before me. I must hurry back to the site for shelter. I stop myself again. "Where am I?" I don't understand! How can this happen to me? I have strayed from my usual route. I swing my head back and forth but I cannot see anything further than one hundred steps away because of the darkness. I throw my gazelle onto the muddy floor and grip my spear out in front of me, "Get a hold of yourself Alessandro! You have to find out where you are!" I sit down by the gazelle and think about how I am going to get myself out of this mess. "Think Alessandro think! How are you going to do this?" I shut my eyes, "THINK!" In the darkness of my mind a picture of a beach slowly emerges. I keep my eyes firmly shut, "Why am I thinking of a beach at a time like this?" My mind focuses on the soft sound of the waves rippling as they start to come at the beach which then slowly become the composition of the swishing sound made only by the waves toppling over each other. I slowly open my eyes and realise that the sound is still there. I must be near the sea! I thrust my spear into the body of the gazelle while I get up and throw my cold drenched dinner back over my shoulder. While doing this I finally grasp why I was not aware of the sound of the sea earlier on, it was simply because I was so caught up in feeling sorry for the dumb animal that I allowed my feelings to lead my mind astray. My sprint for shelter begins as soon as the gazelle is comfortably over my shoulder. There is only one place I know of which one can hear the ocean from so close to the lake. I know of a cave I had stumbled across once before. It is closer to me than my site, that's where I am going. I stop frequently when I come across a small twig or log; I need something to make a fire with when I get to the cave. It is now raining so heavily that I can only see about thirty steps in front of me, I'm not very familiar with the path I am taking, I can only hope that I have not already passed the cave.My enervated legs persist in running even though it seems as if they carry a body which weighs a ton at least. I grow wearisome of running and running into the darkness; not knowing whether the path I take will eventually save me from this storm, or lead me to my demise. I cannot help but to think that there might be another solution to the problem I'm in, or that I might have made a mistake! Maybe I wasn't where I thought I was and I'm just running into oblivion. Nevertheless; it's too late now as the storm is almost in its final and most calamitous stage. My legs being worn out and quivering with a traumatic pain; finally give away and I fall to the floor. "I cannot go any further". While gasping for air and my heart pumping away I notice that I am not under the storm anymore. I put my hands on the floor and push myself up as far as I can go so that I may look up at the sky. "Nothing, it is pitch black! What's this? The floor is dry, how can this be? Do my senses deceive me?" I cannot see the storm or feel the dampness from the rain on the floor but still I hear the rains incursion to the ground. My heart fills with hope as I turn around and see the odious storm up in the night sky. As I drop all the twigs and the gazelle onto the floor, I look back in front of me; up at what I thought was the clear night sky. Still panting I exert myself back onto my feet and as I do so I look back up at the black space which is above me and touch it. A smile grows on my face as I fall back onto the floor and start laughing. "I can't believe it! I finally made it!" I sit up against the rocky wall and sigh with relief. "I cannot rest just now though, I must get a fire started" is what is running through my mind. I get on my knees and reach for the first craggy piece of wood. As I pick it up from the sooty floor cold water runs from it onto my hands. I look at the second piece and then at the third. The whole pile of wood which I had collected is drenched in water from the storm. A flame of frustration erupted within me. I took the pile of wood and threw them as far as I could into the cave. "I have no warmth and no fire to cook with". I stare at the gazelle, "I never knew that so much trouble could ever be caused from such a creature". I do not think of it as being the beautiful creature I once felt commiseration for. Now it is more of a burden than anything else. No matter. I will wait till dawn for the twigs to dry so that I may feast in the morning.I decide to take the gazelle back outside into the storm and cover it with mud so that it will not attract flies or rats. This is not easy to do now as I am already exhausted from the journey and the wind was stronger than ever before. I throw the gazelle back into the cave and then drag myself in the same direction. I sit up against the wall and decide to watch the rain drops fall in front of me while I dry off. I can't really see much of the storm though since it is so dark but the sound it makes is beyond believable. The wind is so strong that it doesn't just howl and blow. It is more of a screeching sound, almost as if the wind is in pain and screaming. It is a petrifying sound. A bolt of lightning strikes the water. With this the whole area lights up in an astonishing white light. In this second of visibility I see something I do not want to see. The sea in the far distance has waves the size of trees. In front of it is a beach of black dirty sand that almost looks like mud. In front of that are the trees, completely bent over by the wind, some have even been ripped out only leaving a huge hole or stump! Then the light disappears as quickly as it appeared. I do not know where I am. I do not recognise this place at all. I am not in the cave I thought I was in. My hope faded with the light so I decide that this is enough for one day. I should just go to sleep. I writhe myself into a small corner of the cave and close my eyes. The lightning strikes again, I know this because the thunder follows and the very ground shakes tremendously. There isn't a single creature to be heard. I feel alone, so very alone.
