PatienceIn the English language, it can be seen that any word can have several connotations. The word "patience," for example, can be defined in several different ways depending on the source it comes from.

In a Websters Unabridged Dictionary (141), patience is defined as, "an ability or willingness to suppress restlessness or annoyance when confronted with delay." On the other hand, a Rogets Abridged Dictionary (57) defines patience as, "calm endurance of a hardship, provocation, pain, delay, etc." or, "tolerant perseverance or forbearance." The similarities of these two definitions from separate dictionaries are that patience is a force so that someone or something can withstand or suppress something. The difference between these two dictionary definitions is that the abridged dictionary uses specific forms of the things that patience suppresses.

Patience also has several different meanings in subject dictionaries. In a Dictionary of Psychology (58), patience is defined as, "a person receiving medical, surgical, or other form of treatment for a disorder or illness." This definition has very little to do with the common unabridged or abridged dictionary definition, but on the other hand, it has much to do with the medical field. In a Dictionary of Subjects & Symbols in Art, patience is defined as

One of the minor virtues in Christian allegory, widely represented in cycles of the virtues and vices in medieval art, but somewhat rare later. (5)This source concludes that patience is a minor virtue in the Christian religion. This means that one should practice patience in everyday life. In a Dictionary of Chiches, the definition of patience isPatience of Job an idiom clich meaning extraordinary patience or forbearing, as "she must have the patience of Job to look after all those children and not lose her temper." (145)In the story of the patience of Job, one should learn what patience is what the importance of patience is in one's everyday Christian life. The bible illustrates that patience enables people to endure for God, and that responding correctly to all situations of life is the key to enduring happiness. It is also defined as "cheerful endurance." This means that Patience is the ability to maintain godly character and a right spirit in different situations. This story concludes that patience is demonstrated by controlled speech, a lack of selfishness, and Godly response. It shows people that God uses trials to build our patience so we can develop the endurance necessary to live our whole life for God.

In, Rogets A-Z Thesaurus (575), patience has synonyms of forbearance, fortitude, composure, submission, endurance, stoicism, tolerance, and imperturbability. These words closely relate to the actual definition of patience because in an actual dictionary, patience is a trait when someone can hold back an urge to do something. The words that the thesaurus uses to compare to Patience are also defined as an urge or temptation.

In a pictorial source, Richard Nunemaker took a picture of a gorilla sitting in a bush with its hand under its chin thinking or waiting for something. This picture captures the word patience because the gorilla seems like it is enduring something painful or suppressing something.

In a movie entitled, "Dogma," patience is used many times. This movie is about how two angels fall from heaven and have to walk through the gates of a church so that they can get back into heaven. What they don't realize is that once they walk into the gates of the church, they will prove God wrong and unmake existence. During the movie, one of the fallen angels named Bartleby saysThe humans have besmirched everything bestowed on them. They were given Paradise, they threw it away. They were given this planet, they destroyed it. They were favored best among all His endeavors, and some of them dont even believe He exists! And in spite of it all, Hes shown them infinite fing patience at every turn. What about us? I asked you...once to lay down the sword because I felt sorry for them. What was the result? Our expulsion from Paradise! WHERE WAS HIS INFINITE FING PATIENCE THEN?! ITS NOT RIGHT, ITS NOT FAIR! Weve paid our debt. Dont you think its time? Dont you think its time we went home? and to do that, I think we have to dispatch of our would-be dispatchers.Bartleby is saying that even though many people do not believe in God and sin regularly, God has persevered through his hardships and has not punished the humans. On the other hand, Bartleby and another fallen angel, Loki, were expelled from heaven for a minor offense. They are angry that God did not show them nearly as much patience as he did the humans.

A French proverb says that "Patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet." This means that when one is enduring patience, it is not fun at all, but after he reaches his goal or has endured something, it is worth the wait.

In a poem by Lucy Maud Montgomery entitled, "Which Has More Patience Man or Woman?," Montgomery comes to the conclusion that women have more patience than men. She shows this by saying that when men are presented with work, they will protest about it very much. She also says that when an man is obligated to wait, he will be very impatient the entire time. This relates to patience because the actual dictionary definition is one who can endure something, and this entire poem is about how men cannot do this.

In another poem by Emily Dickinson entitled, "Patience has a quiet Outer," Dickinson writesPatiencehas a quiet OuterPatienceLook withinIs an Insects futile forcesInfinitesbetweenScaping oneagainst the otherFruitlesser to flingPatienceis the Smiles exertionThrough the quiveringThis poem describes how every person in the world has infinite patience hidden inside of them. When Dickinson says that "Patience-is the smile's exertion through the quivering," she means that patience is what provokes someone to do something even when they are not sure if they want to do it.

In another poem by Elizabeth Barrett Browning entitled, "Patience Taught By Nature," Browning writesO DREARY life, we cry, O dreary life ! And still the generations of the birdsSing through our sighing, and the flocks and herdsSerenely live while we are keeping strifeWith Heavens true purpose in us, as a knifeAgainst which we may struggle ! Ocean girdsUnslackened the dry land, savannah-swardsUnweary sweep, hills watch unworn, and rifeMeek leaves drop year]y from the forest-treesTo show, above, the unwasted stars that passIn their old glory O thou God of old,Grant me some smaller grace than comes to these !--But so much patience as a blade of grassGrows by, contented through the heat and cold.

In this poem Browning asks God for patience to make her life better. She is clearly having some kind of problem with her life and she wants patience so that she can get through it.

Periodicals and newspapers use patience in the way it is used in a normal dictionary. They relate to patience as a persistence, a willingness to suppress something, or a calm endurance.

In a bibliography on George Washington, he is described as having many important traits. One of the most important of his traits the bibliography says is patience.

In an atlas there is a small town in Pennsylvania named Patience. This town has a very small population and is extremely rural. The reason this town might be named patience is because it has a very small population and is waiting to become a thriving city someday.

In three separate interviews on patience, all three people answered in a way that relates to the definition in an actual dictionary. All of the interviewees are relatives in my family and took about two minutes to think about what their own definition of patience is. The first interviewee, my sister Kelley Schott, said that patience is, "an ability to suppress an urge to do something." The second interviewee, my father David Schott, said that it is, "being able to not do something, or wait." Finally, the third interviewee, my uncle George Schott, said that patience is defined as, "being able to wait for something." The similarity between these interviews is that all of the people being interviewed thought of patience the same way that it is defined in the dictionary.

In my own artwork, I depicted patience as a man sitting on top of an hourglass seemingly waiting for something. The reason I chose to use this type of picture is because the man is painted as waiting for something, and he is sitting on the hourglass because it is taking time for him to wait for the thing he is thinking about. The picture relates to the actual dictionary definition of patience because the man seemingly waiting for something to happen.Patience can have many different meanings. With different sources of literature, artwork, and modern ideas, patience can be viewed as many different things. The word can shift in meaning from many different sources because each source focuses on a different idea or topic. BibliographyAgnes, Michael (ed.). Roget's A-Z Thesaurus. Order your Personal Goals paper at affordable prices with Live Paper Help! When thinking about personal goals, I think about a variety of goals that I would like to accomplish. So to narrow things down, I wanted to begin with some short-term goals. My main personal goal at this present time is to earn my Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration. I have known for quite some time that I needed to further my education by enrolling in school, but I always thought of reasons not to. Being employed at Abbott Laboratories for the last couple of years has given me first hand knowledge of not being able to be promoted without having a degree. I also see that there are a variety of things that I need to be trained on in order to work better as a team member and player. While earning my degree, I plan to work full time and use the knowledge I receive and apply it; thus making me feel confident in knowing that I am working more towards my goal to become a better asset to Abbott over all.

Working and attending school full time presents many challenges. I have never thought about how I would juggle my time to prepare for work and school all at once. My goal is to learn how to prioritize my deadlines. I will change my daily routine in order to be efficient in both areas. I plan to prepare my assignments and tasks ahead of time by supplying myself with monthly calendars and placing my due assignments on each day. That process should alleviate pressure from my mind to become time manageable and focused. My family is also a very important part of my life. My husband and dog Sassy are my immediate family residing in TX. I wish to make time for the both of them. I work Monday through Friday, so I would like to have meals prepared for my husband and I at a reasonable hour which would give us both time to complete chores and study. I have come up with preparing sufficient dinners on Sunday to have warm-ups on the following day. On Tuesday, we will pick up something quick or prepare sandwiches the night before since that would be a school night. Currently my learning team meetings are being held on Wednesday evenings. That would give me ample time to prepare something fast. Another big dinner night would be on Thursday, which would also allow me to have warm ups the following day. The weekend would be freebie days meaning we would eat whatever we prepared on our own. Sassy on the other hand is pretty much simple. She will always have food in her bowl. My main concern is for her to have sufficient exercise and play time. During the workweek she only gets the quick walks at night after supper. On Tuesdays she is left alone for the majority of the day and evening so my hope is to give her enough space in our storage room to eat, drink, and play. Sassy's play time will have to wait until the weekend .She can then be taken to the park or lake where I can also have reading time for myself.Along with handling my schoolwork and family, I would also like to continue to furnish my new home. My husband and I built our first home from the ground up back in August 00. My decorating has somewhat taken a stand still due to him being laid off in December 00. My first decorating project is to hang curtains for my family room. I have searched everywhere to find one's that fit my taste as well as budget, but to no such luck. I decided to save the hassle and a penny and make my perfect curtains on my own. I have gotten ideas from the web and friends and should have them finished, ready to be hung up on the window around January. I plan to only work on them in my spare time. Once I have completed that task, I will move on and begin with other rooms in my home.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Personal Goals

One of my last short term goals is to be able to volunteer at one of many nursing homes or assisted living facilities. I would like to sing and read to patients that are in need of uplifting and encouragement. I have thought about researching facilities that are close to my church in the H.E.B. area. This would be convenient for after service time. My Sunday would consist of going to church service from 100 to 10 and spend a maximum of two hours singing and reading with either single or group patients. Several years ago, I had the privilege of working at a nursing home and saw patients needing someone to share with when their families' time did not permit them to. I enjoyed spending time with them just as much as they enjoyed my time. My interest in volunteering was sparked a couple of weeks ago when my family determined that it was time for my grandmother to be admitted. I then made a promise to myself that since I could not be there for my own grandmother who lives out of state, but would in turn commit to assisting other elderly men in women in my own state. My ideal time would be to begin in November before the holiday blues begin to set in.Though there are variety of goals I would like to accomplish these few are the one's that take precedence in my life. I plan to commit to hard work, determination, and perseverance to make these goals come alive.

"Independence and the Inward I" is an essay recollecting Rodinone's life changing transition. From being on the streets, doing nothing with his life, to college learning the value of education. It takes a life frightening experience for him to realize that he was going in the wrong direction.

As a youth Peter believed that hanging out with friends, drinking alcohol and taking drugs, was a reasonable way to life his life. Enough though he was a reasonable intelligent individual he would not take high school seriously; only doing work when pressured by his teachers. A mixture of his peers and family kept reinforcing Peter that education was not for people from the lower classes. His parent's traditional views are demonstrated by Peter's parent's reaction when he tells them that he has decided to attend college. They ask him why he would not get a job and that the only thing that he would amount to, if going to college, well be a retail associate.

There was a part in the story where Peter falls down the stairs. He had just came back from a night out with his friends drinking. His brother pushed him and Peter ended up falling down the stairs. He almost died and after this he concluded that he needed to get his life together. He went to see his advisor and he told peter that he should go to college. Peter followed this advice and applied for college.

After Peter being away to college and away from his friends he could finally put his life together. It wasn't easy for him to keep up with all his classes since he never did well back in high school. He always kept working hard at everything he did and every single one of his classes until he understood all the material. One example was on page 57 when Peter is talking to one of his professors and he said that he was only going to pass him because he had a nice smile. Also how he would write papers that would take him weeks and the professors would tell him to start all over again. As you can see it was not easy for Peter but he never gave up. It was very smart for Peter to decide to get his life together and show his parents that college was the best thing for him and that it was not only for those who were rich.

It did take Peter a very frightening experience to get his act together. He shouldn't have waited for the incident of the stairs to happen, but after all he did learn his lesson. ,

What is Jazz?

"Jazz is Americas classical music," according to Dr. Billy Taylor, and while still rooted in the African-American experience, it is truly an international phenomenon. Jazz is a kind of music in which improvisation is typically an important part. In most jazz performances, players play solos which they make up on the spot, which requires a considerable amount of skill.

There is tremendous variety in jazz, but most jazz is very rhythmic, has a forward momentum called swing, and uses bent or blue notes. You can often hear call--and--response patterns in jazz, in which one instrument, voice, or part of the band answers another. Jazz can express many different emotions, from pain to pure joy. In jazz, you may even hear the sounds of freedom. In the past jazz music has been a powerful voice for people who were suffering unfair or even un human treatment, or because they lived under a cruel ruler or type of government

The roots of jazz can be found in the sounds of West African drums and singing. Arising from their homelands by the slave industry, forbidden to play the drums or to speak their native languages the first African-Americans nonetheless kept and preserved a common idea from the establishment of African music. These ideas expressed themselves in America as field hollers, the blues, gospel music, and eventually jazz music.

Today, the circle has been completed as American jazz musicians have traveled to Africa to share their music, in many cases finding new inspiration in the vitality of todays African music.

While the roots of jazz are firmly rooted in Africa, the culture of America is largely rooted in Europe. Jazz musicians used the musical instruments available in America, which were largely of European origin. Jazz musicians heard European music and many were familiar with the musical theories of European classical music. But they adapted these tools to express their own feelings and brought their own, African influenced, musical standards to bear in creating a uniquely American phenomenon. Perhaps owing to a greater emphasis on arts education in Europe, many jazz musicians have found opportunities for artistic growth and career advancement in Europe more attractive than in America.

Jazz developed in the United States in the very early part of the 0th century. New Orleans played a key role in this development. The citys population was more diverse than anywhere else in the South, and people of African, French, Caribbean, Italian, German, Mexican, and American Indian, as well as English, descent interacted with one another. African-American musical traditions mixed with others and gradually jazz emerged from a blend of ragtime, marches, ragtime, blues, and other kinds of music. At first jazz was mostly for dancing. Then In later years people would just sit and listen to it.

After the first recordings of jazz were made in 117, the music spread widely and developed rapidly. The evolution of jazz was led by a series of masterful musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, and Miles Davis. Jazz developed a series of different styles including traditional jazz, swing, bebop, cool jazz, and jazz rock, among others. "Traditional jazz" is mainly used to describe "early and influential styles as ragtime, boogie woogie, and Harlem stride piano." Bebop was basically the first modern swing style to emerge in jazz.

Jazz musicians place a high value on finding their own sound and style, and that means, for example, that trumpeter Miles Davis sounds very different than trumpeter Louis Armstrong. Jazz musicians like to play their songs in their own distinct styles, and so you might listen to a dozen different jazz recordings of the same song, but each will sound different. The musicians playing styles make each version different, and so do the improvised solos. Jazz is basically about making something familiar into something new. And about making something shared into something on a personal level. Originality is the key factor for the masterful jazz musician. Those are just some of the reasons that jazz is a great art form, and why some people consider it Americas classical music.

Louis Armstrong said, Jazz is music thats never played the same way once. Ralph Ellison said, Jazz is an art of individual assertion within and against the group... What Mr. Armstrong and Mr. Ellison are trying to point out here by saying this is that Jazz is something free. Jazz has no boundaries and does no limit the musician's skill. That is what makes jazz such a beautiful form of art. Improvisation and using your instrument as another form of communication is what jazz musicians do when playing.

Jazz is still alive and well. There are many artists who still follow the tradition left to them by great jazz musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Lester Young, and John Coltrane. At the same time, jazz spread from the United States to many parts of the world, and today jazz musicians--and jazz festivals--can be found in dozens of nations. Jazz is one of the United State's greatest exports to the world.

Introduction and Problem specification

Man, powered by his imagination and inquisitive character, has wondered the mechanisms of Nature since time infinite. This quest for the truth, the ways in which his surrounding works, has led to many a scientific discoveries and innovations. Since the art of making fire and creating handcrafted tools, our civilization has come a long way. Science and Technology are making advances at an amazing rate. Communications is one area where Technology has undergone a rapid transformation. A century ago, telegraphs were regarded as luxuries and one of the few modes of communication with the rest of the world. Today, the scene appears to be quite different. From telephones and telexes to Internet, e-mail and mobiles, technology has connected the whole world into a global village.

Order Custom SOFTWARE RADIO IMPLEMENTATION paper

One of the most interesting things about communication is that it makes use of a radio -- an extremely sophisticated radio. The telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876, and wireless communication can trace its roots to the invention of the radio by Nikolai Tesla in the 1880s (formally presented in 184 by a young Italian named Guglielmo Marconi)[1]. It was only natural that these two great technologies would eventually be combined. But now the problem was that even if a particular system were designed it would not be much appreciated if the maintaining of the system were not possible. The same happened to the usage of radio that were specifically designed for a particular application and then it had to be re-designed again due to changes in technology. It was creating a big problem as both time and money were being wasted. Here is where the Software Radio comes into picture []. This paper systematically comes first with the problems of the conventional radio, then dealing with the design issues of the software radio. After the design issue the right platform is decided by comparing the existing technologies. The main purpose of Software Radio can be understood when it is compared to a conventional hardware radio. Let us see the functional block diagram of a receiver [] that makes use of different blocks as shown in the figure. Fig Block Diagram of a ReceiverThe signals received by the antenna are passed through Band Pass Filters and then making use of mixers and local oscillators the transmitted frequencies is converted to intermediate frequencies. If much lower frequencies are to be attained then the number of mixers and oscillators has to be increased. Then the Analogue to Digital converter samples the analog data to get a digital output that is then processed by the Digital Signal processor. The components from the Band Pass filter to ADC are all analog components. The main problems here are the limited signal processing capability and also the limitations of analog components due to thermal variations, ageing effects, manufacturing inconsistency and involvement of intense testing. One solution is to implement them by defining in software. Maximizing the number of functions handled digitally allows the radio to take advantage of the flexibility of the digital signal processing circuit. Thus the paradigm for the design of a Software Designed Radio can be seen as to minimize the number of analog components uncompromisingly. Thus in this paper there is a problem about hardware radio specified and its solution is given by defining the Software Radio, but then it is not easy to design a software radio without having prior knowledge of the constraints in it. I have tried to come out with these design issues after doing an in depth survey that would let the designer know on which aspects he has to work on. So effectively this paper deals with a problem and its solution, then the problem in the solution to the previous one with an idea which is given as below. Design Issues of a Software Radio

Though the Radio Frequency design is the most important aspect in the designing of a software radio there are other aspects that have to be taken care of too. [4] ï˜ Digital generation of signals Many signals will now be generated digitally in receivers and transmitters and this gives the designer more flexibility to design the waveforms needed.ï˜ Analog to digital conversion while designing the analog to digital converter great care has to be taken regarding the resolution and sampling rate as it may affect the system.ï˜ Digital signal processing techniques for demodulation and synchronization This part of the software radio is very important, as there is technology upgrades in this module every small time interval. With high signal processing capabilities available it has become much easier to design the software radio. ï˜ Advanced processing techniques for range extension and interference rejection The availability of high speed signal processing capabilities facilitates the use of advanced techniques such as adaptive equalization, adaptive error correction, interference rejection, and smart antennas, which may previously have been too complex to implement in commercial radios. These algorithms offer the system designer new tradeoffs between performance and complexity.ï˜ New power management strategies Power management is of utmost importance given that the transmitting power is more as the distance between two communicating nodes are large. So the design must support smart Sleep conditions in order to save the power and increase the lifetime of the system.ï˜ Need for understanding of network considerations A normal radio is nothing but a mere pipeline for transmitting data, but a software radio is much smarter as it has to check the network conditions and adapt to the different situations. So the software Radio must be designed keeping in mind all the possible cases that tend to be complex. No universal algorithm can be developed as the traffic is highly dynamic and without any regular pattern.ï˜ Security issues The main advantage of a Software radio implementation is that the system can be maintained and upgraded making use of software downloads. But care must be taken that appropriate software must be downloaded and it must be to the correct system too or else sensitive data may be in the hands of unwanted people. So authentication and verification are of utmost importance. The download on the software radio and Internet can be compared as follows. [5] Different platforms for Software Defined Radio

The platforms for a software-defined radio can be basically divided into three Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASIC), Digital Signal Processors and Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA). Each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages in terms of performance and overhead and depending on the application requirement one of the following standards are chosen.[6][7][8][]Pros and Cons of the different platforms FPGA Prosï¼ Re-configurability enables performing computational tasks at will.ï¼ Higher flexibility for adaptive coding for multimedia requirements such as bandwidth availability, quality of service requirements and channel characteristics.ï¼ Rapid Prototyping and design iterations.ï¼ Certain function implementations result in decrease of die size.ï¼ Parallel processing.FPGA Cons Hardware is not ASIC and can lead to non-optimized performance and density. Reconfiguration time is longer than compared to loading the software. High power consumption during reconfiguration. DSP Prosï¼ It is simpler and less expensiveï¼ Gets 0% less expensive every yearï¼ Can compensate a variety of errorsï¼ Software is easier to upgrade than hardwareï¼ Deterministic timingDSP Cons DSP techniques are limited to signals with relatively low bandwidths. The need for an ADC and DAC makes DSP uneconomical for simple applications( e.g. simple filters)ASIC Prosï¼ Benefits of customized hardware at low costsï¼ Re-configurable and the hardware can be used for different purposes.ASIC Cons Lower performance for complex functionality. Fixed number of gates per chip which may not be sufficient to implement bigger and complex logic.Major companies doing research work at the moment IBM WIPROINTEL XILINXALTERA CISCOINFOSYS MICROCHIPApart from these there are about 500 companies in 0 different countries which are spending about a few thousand billions on the development of the software radio which serves many applications and with enhanced features. Conclusion

It can thus be concluded that if a Software Radio has to be designed, care must be taken while doing it. With many companies, provided that it follows the correct designing steps apart from investing and doing research work in full thrust, it may not be surprising if we see all applications making use of software radio with near ideal characteristics. Thus an ideal Software radio block diagram can be viewed as follows wherein all the block functionalities are designed using software. In the last part of the work the diametric opposition between the first appearance of Oedipus and the exit of the tragedy is intense. In the end, the anguish and the grief of the the heartbroken and humiliated King are presented extensivelly, as opposed to the self-confidence and greatness presented in the preface. By the end, he is a sordid individual, miserable and profane. He punishes himself and curses the moment where was saved by Kithairon (v. ) Contrary to the preface, the population feels mercy for him, tries to advise him since he is now just a weak person, calls him miserable and unhappy, unnameble and also feels sorry for the state he is in (v. 186, 1, 111, 144). While in the preface he refers to himself as a self confident person with dignity and power, in the exit he says he is unfortunate, miserable and sordid.

And while he based his power to the relations he had with Gods, at the end (v. 151) he admits They hate him deeply. He is subjugated to the opinion of Kreon (v. 1515-1516) who had by then considered an inferior individual. His people, on one hand believe he deserved his fate, and on the other try to support him, as they see that their former respectable person who recognised as their King, is by now a weak and miserable figure. We conclude therefore, that Oedipus has caused the feeling of mercy by himself, he is by now a ruined personality, that has however the force and the courage to be self-punished, gaining in this way the respect of the spectators. Last, it should be noted that he -in his ignorance and tragic state- accomplishes to maintain a certain morality, innate in his personality. In verses 74-77 of the preface he has promised to make whatever Gods suggest in order to he save his city and punish the guilty, a promise that he keeps in the exit after he is blinded himself, with his own hands, and asks from Kreon to exile him (v. 1518). Furthermore, at that point a quality he had shown in the preface is confirmed, namely that of an affectionate person and loving father, as in verses 1477-1514 with teardrops in his eyes, he asks Kreon to take care of his children. The human greatness, but also the human degradation are condensed into the person of Oedipus who passes from the phase of the absolute superiority and deification to the inferiority of his human nature.

Students can receive their Bachelors degree and or Masters degree from either the University of Phoenix or the University of Southern California. In this paper I will give you the comparison of both schools and how they differ from one another in their enrollment procedures. The enrollment processes for the two Universities are very different. To enroll as a freshman at the University of Southern California you must enroll the summer before your senior year in high school. Freshmen candidates are evaluated on the rigor of their high school course work, their grades and their scores from standardized tests. A personal resume, essay and school recommendations also play important roles in the admission decision. The University of Southern California also gives considerations to class rank, honors courses, advanced placement and International baccalaureate work when assessing your grade point average. Most freshmen will be notified of a decision by mid-March. Freshmen that are admitted with honors will be notified earlier. Students must interview with the admission staff and alumni's so they can get to know you better and vice versa.

This is also recommended to be complete during the summer of your senior year in high school. Students are admitted to the University of Southern California on the strength of their academic backgrounds. The enrollment process at the University of Phoenix is a little different than the University of Southern California. One of the biggest requirements is that you must be a twenty-three year old and a working adult. There are some special cases when a student under twenty-three years of age is admitted the University of Phoenix. The University of Phoenix is designed to meet the needs of working adults in the completion of their degree programs. Enrollment at the University of Phoenix is not as competitive as the University of Southern California. Students may enroll at any time of the year they desire. There are classes ongoing all throughout the year. Classes are held on the average of five-week session's verse sixteen weeks at the University of Southern California. Students are required to register for their program course of study on an Enrollment Agreement. Students are asked for their transcripts if any from any other college. To attend the University of Phoenix you don't have to be on the honor roll, high rank in class studies, or an advanced placement student. You just have to be a working adult ready to learn. Students are notified within one week if they are accepted into the University of Phoenix.

Order your Nebichadnezzar paper at affordable prices with ! Blake is one of the major Romantic poets, whose verse and artwork became part of the wider movement of Romanticism in late eighteenth and early nineteenth century European Culture. For the nineteenth century reader Blakes work posed a single question was he sane or mad? The poet Wordsworth, for example, commented that there is no doubt that this poor man was mad, but there is something in his madness which interests me more than the sanity of Lord Byron and Walter Scott and John Ruskin similarly felt that Blakes work was diseased and wild, even if his mind was great and wise. In the Twentieth century, however, Blake has been recognized as a highly original and important poet, artist and writer. The famous work of Blake that I chose to analyze is entitled Nebuchadnezzar, created in 175.

Blakes work can be difficult at times, mainly because the reader is offered Blakes visions in Blakes own terms. What Blake seeks to express can only be presented in terms of vague abstractions and allusions, with a cosmic perspective on issues of faith, religion, philosophy and belief, and this must also mean that the reader or viewer has to work hard. Yet the effort is worth it. William Blake was born in 1757, the third son of a London hosier. As the son of a hosier, a generally lower middle class occupation in late eighteenth century London, he was brought up in a poor household, a preparation for the relative poverty in which he would live for most of his life. He also received little formal schooling, which is all the more remarkable given both the depth and range of his reading of the Bible, of Milton and Greek and Latin classic literature, evident throughout his work. He lived until his death in 187, and was buried in a common grave.

Blake's paintings usually have no accompanying text. This obviously goes back to Mitchell's belief that photographs and paintings should stand alone. I think Blake felt the same way. Before trying to analysis the painting myself I wanted to find out more about it and the painter. As Berger states to avoid mystification (something he is strongly against) we need to understand the artist's context. What is the artist's way of seeing? Only then could I understand and analyze the paintings for myself. When I first saw the painting it looked very interesting and as if a story was behind it. I stared at it for a while trying to grasp my perspective of it. "Perspective makes the single eye the center of the visible world. Everything converges on the eye as to the vanishing point of infinity"(11).Because I don't really have an artistic eye the painting only looked like a creature in cave, half man, half beast. I have a strong foundation in the church, so after reading the title I remembered the story of Nebuchadnezzar in the Bible. The story told of ‘Nebuchadnezzar' who was punished by God for his unbelief and pride in the Book of Daniel. The book of Daniel represents him as proud and domineering, and eventually descending into madness. I then began to notice that the most light was focused on his face and how the man/beast looks frightened, as if he is running from something. There could really be a deeper "reading" or meaning of this painting but I feel that my reading of it is close to other scholars and Blake's. It is hindered by my lack of knowledge and appreciation of art. As Berger stated, " the way we see things is affected by what we know or what we believe"(106).

What many scholars think and what I agree with is that Nebuchadnezzar captures the dark and mysterious madness that controlled the ancient king of Babylon. Perhaps Blake understood madness. He lived during the time of the French Revolution and the first trials of kingly madness in the English king, George III. Blake has in this painting taken the image of a man and skillfully molded him into a wild beast. The long unkempt hair and claw-like nails add to the terror in the eyes, showing a wild, confused and frightened king. The body is animal-like; muscles and shoulders are powerful from years of crawling and climbing on hands and knees. The simplicity of the setting and the unity of color eliminate distractions and a luminous light helps to focus attention on the face. In simple strokes Blake has been able to convey to us an inner wildness, a suggestion of personal madness, which is both ancient and modern.

I think that Blake's experiences and lifestyle contributed greatly to his way of seeing this painting. Throughout his lifetime I am sure he has encountered many people who he thought were mad and materialistic, especially since he grew up in poverty. I also think that Blake, in his works, used Nebuchadnezzar to symbolize the bestial condition of a man who believes only in the reality of material things. This painting to me seemed most like a drama of contrast. Blake doesn't seem to agree that one should focus on material things and tried to bring out the repercussions of that through this painting. The works of William Blake are both creative and powerful and I believe his unique greatness lies in no single achievement, but in the whole of what he was.

A Dutch slave trader exchanged his cargo of Africans for food, Africans became indentured servants, similar to many poor Englishmen who traded several years labor in exchange for passage to America, but up until 1680 the concept of racial-based slave system did not yet develop. Although the number of African American slaves grew slowly at first, by the 1680s African slave numbers grew to between 600,000 and 650,000 which had been forcibly transported to North America. By 1810, the number reached 6,000,000!! Slaves were forbidden from carrying guns, taking food, striking their masters, and running away. All slaves could be flogged or killed for resisting or breaking the slave codes (Sylvester). Although conditions became much better by January 15, 1, when Martin Luther King Jr. was born into his Atlanta, Georgia home, weak traces of slavery and strong cases of prejudice and racism still existed. From birth, Martin Luther King Jr. helped change the American society's cruel ways and reform into a united nation, to live in peace with our brothers and sisters of the world.

Martin Luther King Jr. was born into a family of ministers. His mother was a school teacher, who taught him to read before even going to school. A very good student, he was able to skip grades in elementary and high school. At 15 he enrolled at Morehouse College. He received a bachelors degree in Sociology in 148, also a B.D. in 151 from Crozer Theological Seminary and a Doctorate of Philosophy in 155 from Boston University. It was at Boston University that he met and married Coretta Scott. They moved to Montgomery, Alabama. By 154 Martin Luther King Jr. became a pastor at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery. As a Reverend, he made many touching and impacting sermons, preaching his words and knowledge in hope for a better world. "Man was born into barbarism when killing his fellow man was a normal condition of existence. He became endowed with a conscience. And he has now reached the day when violence toward another human being must become as abhorrent as eating anothers flesh" (King Why We Cant Wait).

From childhood, King experienced racism, including one instance where his neighbors would no longer allow him to play with their sons, because he was ‘colored' (Savier). He was strong enough to move on from that, and smart enough to know and realize that there was a LARGE problem in America, which he planned to fight to change.

Although King was born with his strong sense of ambition and determination, he had help along his way. Two people who played strong influence roles for him were his father and Gandhi. His father instilled his religious beliefs into his young son, raising him as best as he could. Gandhi's peaceful teachings are said to have played a huge role when it came to King's leadership, especially Civil Rights Movements - which could've easily turned into chaos, Since King believed that oppressed people have a moral obligation to resist any system that refuses to treat them as persons, he believed it necessary to expose and denounce any type of response by the oppressed that would ignore this duty to resist or even would resort to immoral forms of resistance. King chose, therefore, to pattern his crusades after Gandhis (Dinh).

King presented himself in a way like no one had done before, he was standing up for what he believed in, and stopping for no one, no matter what it took. King started his advancement to leadership in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) in the South, lasting about eight years before it became national. In addition to the SCLC, King led and participated in the following Civil Rights Movements the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 155, the Birmingham Protest March, and March on Washington, both of 16. Motivated by Gandhi, none of King's actions were violent, but they were peaceful. By 165, Civil Rights Activists even made it possible to vote! King took a large part in the first steps toward black freedom.

By only 164, King's work succeeded. He'd won the Nobel Peace Prize. He was named "Man of the Year" for 16 by Time Magazine, where they discussed in an article his achievements and what he did to earn the Peace Prize. "It was the year of Birmingham, when the civil rights issue was impressed on the nation in a way that nothing else before had been able to do. It was the most decisive year in the Negros fight for equality. Never before had there been such a coalition of conscience on this issue" (Martin Luther King Jr. Never Again Where He Was). It was his strong leadership in the Birmingham Protest March, where civil rights issues were impressed on the nation in a way that nothing else before had been able to do. It was the most decisive year in the Negros fight for equality. His leadership skills and nonviolent words and acts brought him to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Despite his best efforts, his protest movements often led to violence. He himself had been stabbed in the chest, physically attacked three more times; his home had been bombed three times, and he has been thrown into jail 14 times. He also received a lot of negative letters through mail. "After contemplation, I conclude that this award which I receive on behalf of that movement is profound recognition that nonviolence is the answer to the crucial political and moral question of our time -- the need for man to overcome oppression and violence without resorting to violence and oppression" (King Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech).

King impacted many people, from pro sports players, to hip hop artists, to the average person. "As far as black and white terms and everyone getting along, he paved the way. With my generation, that was never an issue; I didnt really see people as black and white. People are people, thats just the way I was raised. In that sense, he totally affected me I had no prejudice toward anyone because I didnt see color" (Simmons). "We as a young generation havent taken up civil rights because we see it as only part of the pie" (Williams). "I can still remember where I was the day Martin Luther King was shot in the San Francisco airport. My trip to Hawaii didnt seem quite as important that day. I pause to honor this brave man each year" (John).

Whether people of the past, present, or future, King has, is, and will, continue to impact lives. King did not only impact the people of his time, he made his mark around the world, for all time. He was a good man, he fought for what he believed in, and achieved it.

Although he strongly believed in non- violence and peace, ironically, and to the world's shame, King was assassinated. It was April 4, 168 around 600pm. He stepped onto the balcony outside the Motel Lorraine in Memphis, Tennessee - meanwhile, from the bathroom of the flophouse across from where King was staying, James Earl Ray balanced on the edge of a bathtub, rested his rifle on the window sill, and fired a single shot that with trained-sniper perfection entered King in the head. This one shot was said to have a global impact.

We all reflect at least one day a year, about this man. It took 15 years after his death, but now every third Monday in January is celebrated in remembrance of Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday, although his real birthday is January 15. Although it was controversial as to whether Martin Luther King Jr. should have his own individual holiday, or if it should be devoted to the Civil Rights Movement, Dr. King demonstrated strong qualities, earning his title, earning his day of remembrance.

Most literature on King has limited him to the American context, presenting him as a southern black leader, a civil rights activist, an `American Gandhi or a national symbol. This approach undermines Kings importance as a world leader and fails to capture the extent to which he addressed the global realities of racism, poverty and war. Evidence of his global impact is the fact that his birthday is celebrated in about 100 countries around the world. (Baldwin) Baldwin, Professor Lewis V. In Euripides' Bacchae and Sophocles' Antigone, piety is a major theme consistent among the play. Piety among the Ancient Greeks was concerned with proper human behavior towards the Gods. It was more about knowing your place, which is not greater than the Gods, and showing respect towards them. In both the Bacchae and Antigone, the main characters, Pentheus & Dionysus and Creon & Antigone respectively, are placed at odds with one another. In this battle of characters in both plays, one is more devout to the State while the other is more pious to the Gods. In this same sense, both plays are consistent with their conceptions of how humans are supposed to act toward the divine, and the subsequent penalties that result from this defiance of the Gods.

The pious characters in the Bacchae and Antigone, were Dionysus and Antigone respectively. Dionysus himself was a God, born of Semele and Zeus. At his inception, he was denied as a God from his mother's sisters, and this denial of Dionysus as a legitimate God continued into his cousin Pentheus' rule of Thebes. This of course angered Dionysus, for this proved a lack of respect to the God. Dionysus set out to prove his status as a God, and punish those who did not believe in him.

Antigone was born of a family with a doomed fate. Her father was Oepipus, who was exiled from Thebes for killing his father and marrying his mother. Her two brothers both died slaying one another. The new King Creon, decided to bury one son with all the funeral rites and not the other. Antigone saw this as an injustice to her brother, and despite serious consequences of the King decided to bury her brother anyway. She saw virtue in being obedient to the Gods, and funeral rites were an important part of this.

Cheap University Papers on Comparison of Euripides' Bacchae and Sophocles' Antigone

Though coming from different circumstance, both Dionysus and Antigone were both honoring or attempting to honor the Gods by being pious toward them. Although Antigone didn't intentionally set out to punish Creon, the way Dionysus attempted to punish Pentheus, both characters did provide the means to enact a punishment on both Pentheus and Creon for not being devout to the Gods.

MAKATI Mayor Jejomar Binay has found a novel way to document and tax the considerable underground income of landlords and property owners within the countrys premiere city. This is through Makati City Ordinance No. 001-108 which was passed by the city's council on December 6, 001. From the Whereasses, it seems that the ordinance was in reaction to the observation (it was not mentioned in the ordinance who made that observation) that most lessors and sublessors in Makati City fail and/or refuse to pay the lessors' tax in accordance with the Makati Revenue Code. Though many speculates that it was a by-product of Binay's need to raise revenues over allegations that the new, imposing City Hall that Binay built has exceeded the original cost estimate by a mile.

Members of city's council, led by Vice Mayor & Presiding Officer Ernesto Mercado, believe that the new Makati ordinance, which aims to widen the citys tax base, would flush out previously undocumented real estate income and subject them to Makatis lessors tax, which is equivalent up to a maximum of /4 of one percent of the propertys yearly gross revenues. This ordinance was therefore passed to reinforce Chapter III Section A.0 (k) paragraph of the Makati Revenue Code, which imposes lessors tax on owners of real estate including accessories, apartels, lodging houses, apartments, condominiums, houses for lease, rooms and spaces for rent, and similar places. The ordinance required the owners and administrators of land, houses and buildings in Makati City to submit to the office of the mayor every year within the first 0 days of January a written declaration under oath stating whether or not their property is being leased or rented to other persons or corporations. Together with the sworn declaration, they were supposed to also submit a copy of the lease contract with a copy furnished to the barangay office where the property is located.First and second time violators are to be penalized with a fine of P5,000 for every violation; third time violators may be imprisoned for 15 days or fined as the court, in its discretion, may determine. The ordinance did not find it necessary to impose a penalty for fourth time violators. Obviously, the fear of the Law ensures that violators will not go beyond tempting the fates a third time.

The new ordinance, which was enacted on third and final reading by a unanimous vote of the city's council members who were present in that special session, had caught a number of building and homeowners unaware. It was reported that most building administrators and residents received copies of the new ordinance and survey form only a week before its scheduled implementation.Since that was the first time that the ordinance was implemented (and perhaps due to its constituents' protests), City Hall had extended the submission of the lease contracts up to the last working day of March this year. The council ensures proper monitoring of the ordinance by requiring all the Barangay Chairman to make an annual inventory of all leased/rented lands, houses and/or buildings located within their respective barangays, based on the declaration under oath submitted by the owners or administrators. The annual inventory shall be submitted to the City Administrator within every first week of April of the current year. Any Barangay Chairman, who failed and/or refused to submit an inventory, after proper notice and hearing, would be required to explain why no disciplinary action should be taken against him.The said ordinance received mixed reactions from different sectors. Property owners in Makati believed that this ordinance is another "pain on their backs". Not much of a problem for big time corporate realty companies who, in the first place, cannot avoid paying taxes on rentals as mandated by Makati Revenue Code. The sector that would received the greatest impact is the small time renters, people who were able to scrape some lifetime savings from the rapidly diminishing value of their salaries, and, with the little saved, decided to buy a small lot which was then looked upon as source of rental income on which to live in their twilight years. These people do not pay the lessors' tax because, in their heart of hearts, they feel that the combined tax take of the government, local and national, is just too much for them to bear. For most owners of this category, their small apartments represent savings, in much the same way that the money they had saved with the banks is savings. They are not really in the rental business in exactly the same way that bank depositors are not in the lending business. They are where they are because for them, rentals, like interest on bank deposits, are regular, dependable, and reasonable fruits of the little that they own. Consequently, there is reason to treat rental income in the same way that interest from bank deposits is treated. They feel that it is more just to subject them to a final income tax of 0 percent at the national level and be done with it. They hoped to be spared from the hassle of big time leasing like keeping records, charging depreciation, etc. because they are not big time in the first place. They are clamoring to be exempted from the municipal lessors tax and be freed from the tedium of complying with Ordinance No. 001-108 and its kind. On the other hand, Commissioner Rene Bañez of the Bureau of Internal Revenue expressed elation over the Binay-inspired move. Bañez recalled that during the Aquino years, then BIR Commissioner Jose Ong was foiled by a court-issued TRO from obtaining copies of homeowners lists from Makatis exclusive villages and condominiums. Bañez said he would ask the Makati government, through the Department of Interior and Local Governments, a copy of the survey results so the BIR could compare the lease declarations with the income tax declarations of the property owner. The Makati government's initiative of implementing a new method of collecting lessors tax is in accordance with the local government code. 187 Constitution included specific provisions guaranteeing autonomy to local governments. Among the major state policies articulated was the policy that "The State shall ensure the autonomy of local governments." It was towards operationalizing this policy that the constitution mandated Congress to legislate a Local Government Code that would devolve substantial political and administrative authorities to local government units (LGUs) long held hostage by the central authorities. The enactment of the Code was welcomed by most sectors of society. It finally transferred the responsibility for the delivery of basic services to the local government units, including appropriate personnel, assets, equipment, programs and projects. One of the major features of the Code that the case of City Ordinance No. 001-108 showcases is the increase in the financial resources available to local government units by broadening their taxing powers. The Code also increases the elbow room of local governments to generate revenues from local fees and charges.Indeed, at the end of the day, local autonomy would mean less reliance upon national government, including ‘allotments' made by the national government, and increased reliance upon internally generated resources, or resources jointly generated with other institutions, be they are other local government units, private institutions, etc. It is within this context that the Code encourages LGUs to be more aggressive and entrepreneurial. "Going into business" with the private sector and, where appropriate, adapting private sectors strategies, techniques and technologies to generate resources are encouraged by the Code. These enable them to deliver the much needed basic services to the people. In addition to this, it is mostly through the processes of devolution that empowerment through decentralization is operationalized. More specifically, these modes of decentralization empower local communities through their local governments and provide them opportunities to be heard and participate in public decision making institutions and processes. In other words, accountabilities are more pronounced under devolved regimes.Ordinance No. 001-108 best exemplified some of the advantages of devolution. First, it frees the national leaders from onerous details and unnecessary involvement in local issues. In this case, since the city's council noticed the problem of inefficient lessors tax collection specifically in their place of jurisdiction, an ordinance that best suit their needs and condition was made. Second, it facilitates coordination and expedites action at the local level. This means that the local government unit can do something about the problem at the timing that the severity of the problem requires. Since the city's council believe that the problem of inefficient lessors tax collection needs immediate action, a special session was held for this purpose. Third, it increases the people's understanding and support of social and economic development activities. Since the area of implementation of this ordinance is relatively small (a city compare to the whole country), its enforcement can be easily monitored.Fourth, it increases popular capacity to ensure responsibility and accountability. In this case, the city's council tapped the barangay officials to do the monitoring in their respective area of responsibility. They are also held liable for non-implementation of the said ordinance.Fifth, it enables participation and easy access to decision points and improves delivery of service by allowing careful consideration of local needs. This advantage was best displayed when the city administrators extended the deadline for the submission of lease contracts. This is to give a lee-way to property owners to prepare their documents since the ordinance caught them unaware. Devolution in local government units allows the city administrators to easily adjust an ordinance to better accommodate the majority of its constituents. And lastly, devolution encourages invention and innovation. This ordinance is said to be the first of its kind in the country, and a number of BIR officials hailed this idea.In all these, one thing has emerged that the devolution is working and that the local autonomy has brought about creativity, imagination, and innovation at the local level.

‘The Necklace"

The character of Mathilde in Guy De Maupassant's short story "The Necklace", can be defined as a dynamic character; one that undergoes a change or develops as a result of the action of the plot. Mathilde starts out in the story as a self-indulgent woman obsessed with her dreams of material possessions. She seems to undergo a change in character, however, while working off the debts she and her husband obtained when they replaced Mrs. Forrestier's necklace. At the end of the story, it seems as though Mathilde's character has changed for the better. She comes off as being more mature and reasonable, and it is easier for the reader to find her likable.

In the beginning of the story, Mathilde can be seen by the reader as the unhappy victim of vanity and desire. She is described in the beginning as "a simple person, without the money to dress well"(5). She appears to be unhappy with her possessions because she considers them to be cheap, and she often dreams of nicer things; "‘She dreamed of the perfume of dainty private rooms', ‘She dreamed of expensive banquets'"(5). Even though most women in Mathilde's social class would never be bothered by the lack of fine material possessions, it seems as though she is obsessed with them. It's as though she refuses to be happy with or even to accept the standard of living she and her husband maintain. When Mathilde's husband, Loisel, brings home an invitation to the Ministry of Education dinner, it only upsets her when in reality it should have made her happy. All she can think about is how she has nothing to wear, and how the other women may look down on her. She tells Loisel to give the invitation to "someone else at the office whose wife will have nicer clothes"(6) than her own. Mathilde's vanity becomes very apparent by her willingness to spend her husband's summer vacation money on a dress that she may wear only one time. Even after she has obtained the dress, she still remains unhappy because she has no nice jewelry to wear with the dress, she tells Loisel that she'll "look like a beggar"(7). He suggests that she borrow jewelry from her wealthy friend Mrs. Forrestier, and so she borrows a "diamond" necklace to go with her dress. Mathilde used the occasion of the dinner to try and make her unrealistic dreams of wealth and respect come true. It seems as though she has succeeded when, at the dinner, she "danced joyfully, passionately, intoxicated with pleasure, thinking of nothing but the moment, in the triumph of her beauty, in the glory of her success, on cloud nine with happiness made up of all the admiration, of all the aroused desire, of this victory so complete"(8).

The loss of Mrs. Forrestier's necklace brought on a series of events in the story that would eventually lead to the change in Mathilde's character. Loisel and Mathilde both had to give up any luxuries they may have had, and work long hours in low paying jobs in order to pay off their debt from replacing the necklace. Mathilde "soon discovered the horrible life of the needy"(10), she washed dishes and clothes, and ran countless errands involving hard labor. She learned to do the "heavy housework, dirty kitchen jobs"(10). It seemed as though, by working to pay off her debt, Mathilde was learning the importance of every penny she earned. She could no longer dream about the gloriousness of wealthy possessions, the reality of her debt was all that occupied her time and thoughts. She "dressed in cheap house dresses, she went to the fruit dealer, the grocer, the butchers, with her basket under her arms, haggling, insulting, defending her measly cash penny by penny"(11). She continued to live this life for ten more years, until they had paid back everything- even the "extra charges imposed by loan sharks and the accumulation of compound interest"(11).

Order Custom The Necklace paper

It is not until the end of the story, after all of debts have been paid off, that the reader can finally see Mathilde as a woman of integrity; she essentially becomes a woman that the reader can find admirable. She is described now as "looking old", and "the strong, hard, and rude woman of poor households"(11). Even though she has aged and become "rougher", the reader can find her admirable because she has behaved heroically in paying off her debt. She has, in essence, paid off the debt that was the consequence of her former vanity and desire for things that were realistically unattainable. Even after Mathilde finds out the necklace had never been real, and that it may to her seem pointless to have worked so hard for ten years; the reader can see that the hard work and suffering has brought out the best in Mathilde's character.

In Guy De Maupassant's short story "The Necklace", the character Mathilde endures ten years of suffering and hard work, but becomes a better person because of it. She is a dynamic character, a character that undergoes a change for the better as a result of ten years of hardship and dedication. But even in the end, she cannot completely shed her old ways, as she still "sometimes" dreams of "that evening so long ago, of that party, where she had been so beautiful and admired"

Order your Fear paper at affordable prices with Live Paper Help! FEARIt's dark, and you can feel winter's icy chill nipping at your neck. Your all alone in a foreign place, you have no idea what lies ahead of you. Your only saving grace is your senses, and sometimes you are forced to question those. You know that old familiar feeling, when your stomach becomes a little tighter, and your mind becomes a little weaker. The tiniest noise can become earth shattering. A twig snaps, and immediately you become aware of every function your body is performing. Have you ever been stuck in the woods at night? Your breathing slows down, as does your movement. The mind becomes your worst enemy, always questioning your every move, making the most absurd idea seem real. That feeling comes over you, you can't quite name it, but you can smell something foul in the air. It's almost surreal as time slows down you are caught in some kind of dream world, where who knows what is behind you trying at every turn to pounce. That feeling is fear.

What is fear? Fear is a cerebral assassin. Fear is not eating maggots, or jumping off a building while being harnessed. Fear is purely a mental state. The mind is a hotbed of fear; your mind can make you weep, and your mind can make you strong. Fear is that oh so familiar feeling you get when you're alone. When no one is around to hear you scream. When your mind has a playground, the sky is the limit for fear. Fear can bring the biggest man to his knees. Fear does not lift weights; nor does fear flex its intellectual muscle. The mind it seems has but one purpose to instill fear.

The face of fear is an ugly one. The mall has been closed for an hour, your movie just ended. It was a rather busy night at the mall, so you had to park on the other side away from the theatre. You thought you would get to go through the mall but it's all closed off. Suddenly you realize what you have to do, walk outside, by yourself. Unknowingly you begin to ask yourself those fear provoking questions. Do I hear someone talking? Is that just the echo of my steps? Is there someone behind me? Each question seemingly gaining momentum until finally your heart begins to race and your pace begins to quicken. You try to calm yourself but it is an impossible task. You hear another sound; there's a man behind me! Oh god! You're almost running, in fact you are in a dead sprint, what are you sprinting from? Who knows, but you continue on until finally you reach the comforts of your locked car, then and only then do you look behind you and realize that it was nothing at all…Chalk another one up to fear.

Barbie Doll, by Marge Piercy, demonstrates the need for girls to obtain the perfect body. The girl was born normal and average. She had slightly a larger nose and big thighs. She was also known to be masculine since she had strong arms and back. Because of this, her classmates mocked her and belittled her. Although the girl was intelligent, this mocking and humiliation only destroyed her. With Piercy's sarcasm, the girl cut off her legs and nose, leading to her suicide. In the casket, she lay pink with a perfect nose made up of putty. At her funeral, her classmates finally said she looked pretty. Sadly, it took the death of her life to be recognized as "pretty" and for her to wear pink, which is portrayed a girly color to wear. With Piercy's sarcasm and irony, the poem reflects the majority of teens and women today obsessed with obtaining what society thinks is the perfect body. I chose this topic because I am also in the majority.

I grew up with a good family and household. My family always told me I was pretty and beautiful. They always said, "'Eat up!' ‘You need to eat, you're losing too much weight' ‘Boys don't like really skinny girls..'" Never did they tell me I need to lose weight or that I'm ugly. Neither did the people around me.. But how did I get such a notion that a perfect body is weighing 15 lbs less than I do right now? One way was the media.

Statistics show that media does play a large role in a person's attitude toward her body. A survey conducted by Harvard researchers, given to 54 fifth through 1th grade girls, found that 67% of frequent readers of fashion magazines are more likely to diet or exercise to lose weight, though only % were overweight. Sixty-nine percent of the girls said pictures in fashion magazines are influenced their idea of a perfect body. When questioned about how media in general affects them, 60% said media influenced their attitudes about body shape ( Imkiede 1). With these statistics, it's not hard to see how eating disorders have become more and more common. Dr. Feder of the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario treats many patients with eating disorders. He reports that every year "there's been a greater and greater preponderance of kids with eating disorders." He says he sees younger and younger patients from 1-18-years-old, and even 8, , and 10-year-olds now. Canadian statistics show that the rate of anorexia in North America has increased by 800% in the last 5 years and the disorder has a 5% to 10% death rate ( Imkiede 1).

Many types of media influence problems such as eating disorders, depression, and negative self images. Fashion magazines are one source for this idea of a "perfect body." Magazines such as Vogue, In Style, Teen People, People, Elle, Cosmopolitan, Seventeen, and YM all reflect ads and pictures of models with long, lanky, and skinny bodies. But all of these images of perfect bodies are an illusion. The pictures are all airbrushed (Wortman 1). Computers can make bodies look longer, skinnier, and perfect. They can take off any unwanted marks on the skin, pimples, and even fat. So basically, these bodies are utterly unattainable. Also, entertainment media reflect this notion of a perfect image. But, the industry also replaces actors' bodies with a models'. For example, in Pretty Women, Julia Roberts' head appears several times on another woman's body. A body double was used because Julia's body wasn't "good enough" ( Imkiede 1). Even a big time celebrity, who makes $0 million per movie, has to hide her body in front of the media. And television shows such as Baywatch reflect long, skinny bodies with large busts. These bodies are virtually unattainable and are achieved through family genes or plastic surgery. Young women grow up with the panic to achieve these bodies and expect more than nature's reality. They exercise, diet, and many times end up with an eating disorder. The media portrays women with a size 6 or below, while the average American women is between size 1 and 14 ( Wortman 1). Furthermore, athletes are affected by the media, such as figure skaters, gymnast, and especially dancer. I know two ballet dancers who stay utterly thin because of the fact that to hold a career in ballet, only the thinnest are capable.

Along with the perfect image media portrays, women are so brainwashed that they think this image is what men prefer as well. Even though some men superficially believe that being seen with someone who represents the current images in the media will automatically elevate them to super stud ranking, most men prefer larger women, even if they don't admit it (Anderson 1).

David, 1, an Art Director from London agrees, "To say that only women who are a size 10 or less are beautiful is a fallacy. I don't find women who are too thin at all sexy. There's something strangely unnatural about men who prefer a women with boy-like physiques. To me, there's nothing more beautiful than a women with ample curves. Who wants to cuddle up to a skeleton at night? I dated one girl who was totally obsessed about her weight, despite my reassurances that she looked far better with a ‘bit of meat' on her. The relationship did not last because she was always too busy worrying about how she looked and ended up spending more time in front of the mirror than she did with me!" ( Anderson ).

Also, and American Psychologist , Catrin Griffith says we live in a society obsessed by control, thinness, and youth. Therefore fatness is regarded as a loss of control and ultimate failure, particularly since men who are status-driven feel the need to parade a partner who fit's the current ideal. Subconsciously, however, men are naturally drawn towards women with rounded hips, which is a sign of their ability to carry and nurture their offspring ( Anderson ).

Other men feel the same way and prefer a well-rounded women with good character traits and personality. As Rob, 6, a Royal Air Force pilot points out, "There's nothing more off-putting than taking a woman out to a nice restaurant and then watching her pick at her food all night, especially when I want to tuck into my food without feeling guilty about the fact that I actually enjoy eating. Generally, if a woman enjoys her food, it's a sign that she has a good appetite for other things!" ( Anderson ).

Women are supposed to have curves and features men do not. This is why mother nature allowed us to form hips and other curvy features. Also, women who are obsessed with the body can be less sexy to a man because men like woman with a confidant body image. James, 6, a Software Engineer says, "I'm not saying large women aren't concerned about their appearances, but they are not totally consumed like a lot of model look-a-likes are. Larger women focus more on their personalities and emanate a quality that says, ‘Hey, I'm fun to be with, I know how to enjoy life' as opposed to their thin counterparts who are often afraid to let themselves go in case they put a hair out of place. There's something so unbelievably sexy about a voluptuous woman with a larger that life personality. Given the choice of Kate Moss or Kate Winslett, I'd chose Kate Winslett any day" (Anderson ).

It is proven that men do prefer the average women over the model-type body. So why do women still desire the media's image for a perfect body? One reason is that lyrics in songs also portray this image of the perfect body and how a girl should be. One song titled Barbie Girl by Aqua, has wrong, twisted messages with lyrics like this….

"I'm a Barbie girl, in Barbie world

Life in plastic, it's fantastic.

You can brush my hair, undress me everywhere.

Imagination, life is your creation.

I'm a blond bimbo girl, in a fantasy world,

Dress me up, make it tight, I'm your dolly.

You're my doll, rock'n'roll, feel the glamour in pink,

Kiss me here, touch me there, hanky panky.

You can touch, you can play, if you say ‘I'm always yours'…"

Songs like this and many more portray a negative self image and is increasing in today's society.

Although it is common for women to be unsatisfied with their bodies, body images in men have increased as well. Surveys say that 17% of men are undergoing some sort of diet, and an increasing number of men are undergoing cosmetic surgery. Also, a number of grooming products for men is now immense, and is set to rival the number of different products made just for women ( Ferguson 1).

One in ten anorexics are now male, while 4% of men are bulimic and % binge eaters ( Ferguson 1). Experts say that although this number is far less than women, the number is steadily increasing ( Ferguson 1). But why? As with women, the media plays a large role in men and their negative body image. The men physique is used more in today's society for advertising. Men become more conscious with their body and also develop problems such as eating disorders, body obsessions and low self esteem. Men are reluctant to reveal their symptoms due to embarrassment and shame, and sufferers can become socially isolated and experience problems at work and school ( Ferguson ). Anorexia involves people who believe they're too fat. Well men have a similar problem who believe they are too skinny or puny. They believe women want the big, buff physique. This notion leads to men using steroids and other artificial substances harmful to the body in order to obtain a "better" physique.

It is hard to say when this idea of a perfect image in today's society will fade away. Maybe we will go back to the 40's and 50's when women like Betty Grable, Rita Hayworth, and Marilyn Monroe (sizes 1-14) were swooned over ( Ferguson 4). "I think we as a society are pushing young people to grow up awfully quickly and forcing them into precocious positions that they may not be ready for," Dr. Feder says. "They're having trouble getting through their adolescent development process for one reason or another. They're often high-achieving, fairly frightened by the future, and struggle with issues of who they are. Seeing overly skinny models all over the media will not enhance the developing child's self-esteem, self-worth, or self-image" ( Imkiede ).

Society needs to provide ways to counter-act media's promotion of eating disorders. I really have no solutions, unfortunately. I have faced eating disorders and negative self-images for the last 10 years. Even though I hear that the perfect body is utterly unattainable, I still strive for it. It so sad, but true for many. When will our society promote positive self images and encourage the actualization of reality? Hopefully, it won't be too late.
