Art Analysis

I have always felt that visual imagery is one of the best ways in which people may express themselves. Whether the image is produced by painting, drawing or photography, a picture needs no words to explain what it means and what the artist felt when he or she conceived it. Language is not a barrier when the subject is visual.

Based on the preceding I chose two pieces of art in two completely different fields to analyze. My first piece of art is by the late Edward Steichen (187-17) A photographer whose active career lasted half the time in which photography has existed. His black and white composition, "Wilted Sunflower", is one of the finest pieces of photography I have ever seen. Seeing as I myself am an amateur photographer, I felt that my judgment of this piece could be most critical.

When I first glanced at this piece of art the first thing that came to mind was "I can't believe there can be so much beauty in the death of something." The 8 x 10 photograph produced with a large format camera is engulfed by a wilted sunflower lying against what seems to be the bottom corner of a rusted metal barn.

He has purposely thrown much of the background out of focus in order to place attention on the beautifully wilted flower. It looks as if he may have taken this image at dusk in order to make use of amazing shadows which make the brighter features of the flower come to life. The purpose of this is to make you feel as if you were actually there viewing that moment in time. The image also produces a feel of time, which has passed. One can almost visualize the presence this flower must have shown in life. He has placed this flower primarily in the left third of the page, causing the viewers eye to flow into the pedals at the left bottom corner flow through the flower and come back and flow through the left top corner of the page. The thought of producing an image, which has a flowing quality such as this, is ideal in photography.I believe it is also important to point out the fine grain that Steichen was able to produce in this picture through the use of his large format camera. By doing this he has made the photo look extremely intimate and perhaps even fragile. This photograph is a very impressive piece of art.The second piece of art that I chose to analyze is a much older piece. An oil on canvas painting produced in 1740 by Giovanni Panini (161-1765) labeled "Interior of the Pantheon". In this painting Giovanni has skillfully adjusted the optical perspective, distorting the interior of the Pantheon so that the viewer may see all of the beautifully crafted ceiling while also portraying a view of people mingling on the floor of the pantheon and even being able to peer through and see the fountain that was present in the Pizza Della Rotunda outside of the Pantheon.Giovanni has made a feeling of time and motion by placing the mingling people on the floor of the pantheon. This was a wonderful way for him to make what would have been a very boring architectural painting into a work which supplies the viewer with much interest.Something that I noticed was that Giovanni made good use of primary colors. He dressed many of the people in reds and blues once again giving your eyes something to be attracted to. He also used faded color as the "distance" portrayed in the picture grew further. In conclusion, after viewing these pieces of art I have a much greater appreciation of both of these artists and the works that they conceived. And although neither artist utilized every tool which could have been used in the creation of these pieces, they still portray something amazing, the ability that man has to capture feelings and time. After all as we have all been told sometimes "less is more".

Discuss Rosenthal's use of minor characters in P'tang Yang KipperbangP'tang Yang Kipperbang is a TV Play about the ups and downs of adolescence. It focuses mainly upon the life of Alan Duckworth and how he deals with his current problems and problems that he may encounter in his future life. However, throughout the play we are introduced to numerous other characters that reflect and contrast Alan's (Quack Quack's) life. Examples of theses characters are Shaz and Abbo, Alan's best friends. These contrast and compare upon Alan and his life. Rosenthal does this by making them seem the total opposite of Alan i.e. confident and a lot more sexually experienced. When really Shaz and Abbo are both as pathetic as Alan, if not more pathetic. This is because they always lie about things that they say they have done. Another way in which Alan compares and contrasts with Shaz and Abbo is that Alan appears to be a normal teenager who talks to his friends about girls activities with the girl that he likes he just wants to kiss her. However he says that he does want to do all the ‘other things' because his mates pressure him to say it. Shaz and Abbo emphasise not just Alan's problems but problems that all adolescents face in general.Ann Lawton is Alan's High school sweet heart, and he will do anything just to kiss her once. But as always there is someone, or something as the case may be standing in his way. Geoffrey Whittaker is the girl's favourite boy, especially Ann Lawton's, and it is for this reason that Geoffrey and Alan are enemies. Geoffrey also intensifies Alan's problem. Nevertheless, where there is a will there's a way, and Alan's big chance comes when he gets volunteered to be a star in the school play, and luckily for him one of his parts is that he has to kiss a girl on the lips. This girl just so happens to be Ann Lawton. And Alan believes that this is thanks to God who he prayed to the previous night to let something like this happen, "You don't half work in mysterious ways." Alan Duckworth uses God as a confidant, which basically means that Alan can say a monologue but it seems like he's talking to someone. It is a dramatic device that Rosenthal uses to avoid a soliloquy. Alan also uses the school's groundskeeper Tommy as a confidant. He tells Tommy all of his troubles and thoughts and Tommy usually responds sensibly but occasionally is sidetracked by troubles of his own. For example; at one point in the play when Alan is telling Tommy about his dilemma with girls, Tommy says "girls like it too you know, some of them bloody love it." And the audience can tell from this that Tommy is talking from experience. Tommy is actually talking about his current relationship with Alan's teacher at school, Miss Land. This relationship runs as a parallel plot to Alan and Ann's story; it shows that life and love gets no easier after adolescence and that the same boundaries get in the way like status. Tommy and Miss Land's relationship is purely sexual; we know this because Tommy calls Estelle ‘Miss Land' which not only shows that they don't know each other very well, but it also shows that she has a higher status than Tommy, and in those days status was very important. Ann also has a higher status than Alan. We know this because Ann lives in an expensive house, where as Alan lives in a cheap housing estate. This is another factor that makes Alan more depressed, because it proves even more, that Ann is out of Alan's league.

Custom writing service can write essays on Discuss Rosenthal's use of minor characters in P'tang Yang Kipperbang

Another important minor character in the play is the voice of cricket commentator, John Arlott. He acts as a chorus and comments upon Alan's predicaments; he is like Alan's thoughts or ‘mind-monologue'. The fact that Alan's mind's voice is a Cricket commentator tells the audience a lot about Alan and what he focuses his life upon. For example when Alan thinks that his life is going well like when he gets to kiss Ann the commentary is good and the players are scoring lots of points but in contrast to that when Alan is feeling sad, the cricketers are not scoring and are doing really badly. This technique also fills up a lot of space in the play like when Alan is walking he will pretend that he is playing for England cricket team and that he is playing the current test match. This proves that Alan bases his life upon the game of cricket, and that Ann isn't all that he thinks about. I personally believe that Rosenthal has found a very effective way of putting forward Alan's thoughts.A key line in P'tang Yang Kipperbang is when John Arlott is commentating after Alan has just kissed Ann, and he says "he went the wicket a boy, and came back a man." This line sums up the entire play. It describes Alan's ups and down in one line.Alan and his friends all have a certain method of showing that they are all in the same circle of friends. They have a saying or motto that they say to each other. "P'tang Yang Kipperbang". It is the title of the play which makes the audience thinks that this saying is what the entire play is going to be about, but it's not. There are no hints dropped anywhere in the play about what "P'tang Yang Kipperbang" means; however they always seem to say it instead of saying "hello" or "goodbye". Geoffrey Whittaker also has an unusual way of talking that he considers ‘cool'. Whenever he and Ann depart they say "Mañana. Mañana is not soon enough for me." Mañana is Spanish for tomorrow. And when Alan tries to say "P'tang Yang Kipperbang" to Geoffrey he laughs and say," I don't do P'tang Yang Kipperbang!" This is because he thinks that he is better than Alan and his friends and that he's not that childish. However I believe that "Mañana" is as childish as "P'tang Yang Kipperbang" if not more. That is an example of humour that Rosenthal has put in. Rosenthal uses a lot of humour whenever "P'tang yang Kipperbang" is the subject. Another example of this is when Geoffrey tries to say "mañana" to Ann but she just ignores him. This was my favourite bit in the play because it shows that Alan has finally beaten Geoffrey and that he's no better than Alan because he says "mañana is not soon enough for me", to himself. The road menders play a key role in commenting upon Alan's life. They act as a conceptual chorus pointing out, not only the problems that Alan faces, but the problems that everyone on the earth faces. They do this symbolically like when they say,"he'll be shaving next." They say this because they know that Alan is growing up. The strange thing is that they know exactly what's going on in Alan's life even though they have never spoken to each other. I believe that the road menders are Rosenthal's voice and that this is how he's expressing his opinions about life in the play. The way that Rosenthal portrays adolescence in this play is very similar to the way that he portrays adulthood. He believes that they are both very difficult to live through and he shows this using many different dramatic techniques.

TheHutu people thought they would just exterminate the Tutsi people. Yes, the United States andother United Nation members should have step in to help all of those innocent people that weremassacred for all the wrong reason, instead we all turned our heads and looked the other waywhile people were being hunted down and slaughtered like animals. Yes, racism had a lot to dowith how the United Nation and United States made their decision on helping the Tutsi peoplebecause of the color of skin (Black) no one wanted to bother with trying to help in saving thelives that were lots on those terrible days in Rwanda. Order your Creon's Struggles in Sophocles' "Antigone" paper at affordable prices with Live Paper Help! In many stories, characters experience a number of struggles which may cause them to unwillingly modify their lives. In Sophocles Antigone, Creon is faced with difficult challenges, but he manages to keep hope in his attempts to overcome them. A reader usually feels sympathy for the characters who are challenged throughout their lives. Although Creon, at first, may not seem deserving of the readers sympathy, due to the occurences of the play, he becomes a very admirable character. Creon is deserving of the readers sympathy because he is under pressure, he changes his state of mind, and is faced with death.

Creon is under pressure to portray the image of a strong ruler for his people and he should be given the readers sympathy. Because of his political power, Creon has no choice but to act cruel throughout the beggining of the play. He is a newly appointed ruler who has to rescue his people from the civil war brought on by the rivalry of Polynices and Eteocles. Therefore, Creon is forced to formulate unpleasant laws so that political trouble makers will think twice before attempting to start conflicts. Objection to Creons laws is seen by nearly all the characters in the play. Creon understands the objections and recognizes his mistakes, but in order to maintain his exemplary position as the absolute powerful ruler, he attempts to conserve his laws. Creon admits that he did not wish to be the king, it was brought upon him, and he is doing his best. Extremely concerned for the peoples well being, Creon stays true to his initial rulings, and does not change in order to gain the trust of his people.

Additionally, Creon is deserving of the readers sympathy because he attempts to change his state of mind and reconcile with Antigone. Recognizing that Antigones reasons for her actions are reasonable, Creon says to Antigone, I shall have to have you killed. And I dont want to. He is affraid of his own decision and begs her to have pity on him by changing her mind. The rebellious and determined Antigone refuses, and pities Creon for his weak spirit. Creon again attempts to change her mind by urging her to seek happiness in love and life by marrying Haemon. Again Antigone fights back, even though she is now more understanding and somewhat sad. Creon is sick at heart over not being able to change the mind of the stubborn Antigone.

Creon has become a completely changed man, but no one takes pitty on him. As he has positively changed his state of mind, his son and wife kill themselves. This horrible tragedy leaves Creon alone in his throne for eternity. Althouth it is unkown to the reader, Creon may be left to face depression in the future due to the unexpected deaths of his loved ones. Creon is left wondering that if when one changes their state of mind for a good cause, he is left with nothing but tragedy. For the rest of his life, Creon is left with guilt. He will never achieve peace with his conscience and is left mentally scarred forever.

Indeed, Creon makes mistakes as a ruler, but attempts to correct them, only it is too late for him to acquire forgiveness. Creons solitude results from his ignorance. Perhaps, Creon is a changed man who will continue to live his life concerned for his people, or in contrary, Creon is so deeply left with depression that he may take his own life. As a result, Creons fate is left to the readers imagination which enhances the beauty of the play.

INTRODUCTIONThe tuck shop

The college tuck shop is situated at the school's hostel campus. I t is a small shop which opens about five times a week for an average of two hours per each opening day. It serves an average of thirty students per day. The shop was started in 15 and it has since, been expanding at quite an fast rate. Though the management processes of the shop are not complex, running the shop has some difficulties especially with the services offered. The shop is supposedly a non-profit making venture but however efforts must be made not to make losses.

Do my essay on ewrwerwetre CHEAP !

Over the past years running the shop has become increasing cumbersome, services being too slow and tiresome, loss of variable data and even loss of items. The management team has therefore seen the need to improve their running system. They have decided to change their manual system and use a more efficient method. Many solutions have been suggested as will be looked at later, but the introduction of a computerised system was favoured most. This project is aimed at developing that reliable efficient computer system that will be, an everlasting solutions to the numerous problems being faced by the shop now. The problems with the current system will be looked at in the next phase of the project. STATEMENT AND ANALYSIS OF THE PROBLEM

When developing a good computer project, it is crucial to always first identify the problem you are trying to solve. Otherwise the project has no aim. To develop a good system for the shop, there is need to know what the managers of the shop want to improve and to know what kind of problems they are facing with their current management system. The following information about, how the shop is run was provided by the shop manager, Mr Ahiable in a direct interview with me.

Description of the shop's current management system

The tuck shop is run as a CAS project with the students as the major doers of the shop. There are three management personnel with Mr. Ahiable as the top coordinator. Students serving in the shop make estimates of the costs of items and pass the list to him. Mr. Asumang is the financial controller. He requests and signs for the money to buy new items. Cost and sales records are kept in special notebooks in the accounts office. At the shop itself, students on duty record data on tally sheets. The tally sheets help as the stock control, and to record data on daily transactions such as items sold, and sales made. At the end of each month, the tally sheets are sent to Mr. Ahiable, the shop coordinator and then to the financial controller and later, they are transferred to the accounts office, for storage. These tally sheets are the only point of reference that shows the state of the shop at any point in time. They therefore have to be accurate and must be protected well. Students on duty have quite an amount of work to do. They have to sell and record information in the process. Recording entails performing certain calculations concerning, sales and quantities sold. A calculator is provided for this.Identification, description and analysis of the problems with the current manual systemFrom the study of the old system, a number of problems have been identified and will be addressed in this phase of the project. There are three major problems and these have to do with input, processing and output of data. Each problem is described broadly and analysed below.1. Data input As described above, data is recorded manually on data sheets. The customer is served such as entering data about the customer's purchase in to tally sheets and calculating total prices and balances, before he is given his purchase. All data is entered with a pen or pencil. Students normally have to stand in queues waiting, to be served and is frustrating to them and it also crowds the small place. Still looking at the input process, a lot of time is wasted recounting stock at the end of each sale and updating stock on tally sheets. This serves as the control stock system. This problem can easily be rectified by introducing a computerised system at the shop to carry out a lot of these activities. A computer system will have to be set up at the counter consisting of a PC with a scanner and a program to run the shop. When new stock is bought, bar codes will be stuck on each of the items and then stored. A scanner connected to the PC will be used to read the bar codes into a Database on the program. The system must be user-friendly, user-interactive. That is, it must be easy to use, appealing to the user and it must be fast enough to cope with the load of work that the attendant has to perform on each selling day. The system will have a database where data on the items sold and sales will be stored. A fuller description of the computer system will be given later. . Processing data In the current system, processing includes calculations of sales and prices, which are usually done using a calculator. The use of calculators is slow and prone to human errors. Data recorded on tally sheets can not be manipulated. For example, sorting, deletion, searching or traversing cannot be formed on the tally sheets. This makes searching for historic data tiresome and sometimes impossible. As such some students who may have change with the shop, may lose it just because the balance record stored in books cannot be found. This is highly discouraging for the students. What is required is an efficient, fast and accurate system that will process the data easily. The computer-based solution designed in this project must therefore have a database file that will hold data and allow manipulation of data. It should also be able to generate reports from the data..Output process In the current manual system, what can be termed as output is the same tally sheets that are filled at the end of the end of each working day. The problem with these tally sheets, is that they there are always gaps in them ie some fields are left unfilled at the end of the day. For example, students find it hard to have to recount stock at the end of each day. Thus the field of "quantity unsold" on the tally sheets is always blank. This poses a problem to the shop managers when determining when and how much stock to buy for the shop. This means that either the shop gets overstocked or under-stocked. Another problem related to output is that of communication. At the end of each month, record of how the shop is running, are sent to the shop manager and financial controller in the form of tally sheets. A great deal of paper is wasted in preparing these tally sheets and their storage is also a problem. They take up so much space and they are prone to theft or destruction by humans or by natural means. A computer system will be required to reduce the use of paper and pen at the shop. Storage of Data will be done on hard disk rather than cabins. Security of data will be guaranteed to a larger extent through the use of passwords and privileges allocated to specific people. Communication between the ground servants in the shop and the shop managers will be improved with the use of e-mail. A printer connected to the PC will be used to print any reports that are required in hard copy. In all, the computer system will help to increase the speed, ease, and accuracy of work at the shop. Maximum security of the shop's data and good maintenance of the shop will be assured with the use of a computerised system.

Lacey leads the story and most of the paragraphs are about his activities such as cliff walking and the purchasing of a walking stick. The reactions are always described through either Mollys or another third persons eyes. This style of writing gives the reader no opportunity to know why Lacey is as he is. OBrian portrays Lacey as snobbish and likes to act more important than he really is. The language that he uses to describe Lacey is very negative in its inference. The best example of this is, "… the nice couple from Letchworth (They where called Jones and had a greedy daughter he was an influential solicitor." This shows that he thought of anyone with power as nice people. Molly is always described as being weak OBrian uses words such as, "Jelly" and "baby" and phrases such as "staring unseeing" and "trembling lips". This makes the reader feel protective towards her. OBrian does this to emphasis the treatment of women in unhappy relationships at the time the story was written. The writer also paints an unflattering physical picture of Lacey in that although he is balding he combs his fine hair in such a way as to disguise the fact. Not only is he mean to Molly but he is also mean with his money, only so much can be spent per day and any overspend by himself on a walking stick meant Molly must go without her tea. In the text Molly was never offered an alternative present to compensate for the money Lacey had spent on his stick. wwed edw esededs ayed edba ned kced eduk.In pre decimal times (the reference to shillings) it was difficult for women without independent means to get a divorce so Molly must have felt stuck with Lacey. Even after her desperate attempt to kill Lacey, once he had convinced himself that it was an accident, her reaction was giving up all hope. We know this because of the quote, " she turned her dying face to the ground". The closing line of Molly marching down the path suggests that nothing has changed.

Evil is a destructive force; it causes harm to those who embrace it and their victims. In Shakespeare's Macbeth, the protagonist Macbeth and Lady Macbeth fall into the hands of evil. Evil is what drives people to commit unnatural actions of destruction. Macbeth succumbs to evil through his fatal flaw, greed, and it causes him to hurt others and ultimately, himself. When Macbeth willingly murders, massacres, lies and deceives, he loses his heath and sanity. Evil corrupts everything it touches, and Macbeth decides to be evil's servant. But, when Macbeth embraces evil, it corrupts him, and it ultimately destroys him as well. Lady Macbeth is a victim of Macbeth's fatal flaw, since she is drawn in, and becomes greedy for power herself. She pushes Macbeth into destruction when she adds the small touch that plunges Macbeth into a chain of murder, destruction, and lying followed by the loss of their sanity and health. After Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are well into the depths of corruption and greed, it is clearly seen that their guilt will haunt them for the rest of their lives. The harm they have caused others will be returned to them as revenge and they have lost their sanity in order to gain power. The fate of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth clearly illustrates that to embrace evil is to negate our own need for order and well being.

By embracing evil, Lady Macbeth and Macbeth have committed unnatural actions that disturb them. Their guilt does not leave them in peace, and slowly degrades their health. Macbeth's guilt causes him to act strangely in front of his guests, and it disturbs him deeply. Macbeth's guilt is deeply mutilated, and it only affects him when he hallucinates "Take any shape but that, and my firm nerves / Shall never tremble" (III.iv.14-15), and as soon as his visions disappear he feels better "Why so, being gone, / I am a man again.- Pray you sit still" (iii.iV.10-11), not something normal considering the actions he has committed. His guilt paralyzes him when he does feel it, but most of the time he is guiltless, and that encourages him to commit more murder. Although his guilt does not ultimately destroy him, it is a factor that brings his own men against him, since through his guilt he reveals the actions he has committed. The lords grow suspicious as he speaks to his hallucinations, and they inquire on his conflict "What sights, my lord?"(III.iv.14). Macbeth does not attempt to conceal his guilt as strongly as Lady Macbeth does, and this is what protects him from it. Macbeth releases his remorse by speaking to Lady Macbeth, and through his hallucinations. "I could not say ‘Amen' / When they did say ‘God bless us'." (II.ii.-40) "But wherefore could not I pronounce ‘Amen'?"(II.ii.4). Macbeth expresses his guilt to Lady Macbeth after he returns from the murdered king's room. Lady Macbeth does not show guilt throughout the play until her death, which proves that her overwhelming guilt is what killed her. As is seen by her sleepwalking, Lady Macbeth felt guilty of her actions and she replays the events that trouble her during her sleep. "The thane of Fife had a wife. Where is / she now? What, will these hands ne'er be clean?" (V.i.44-45). Lady Macbeth bottles her guilt throughout the play, and its overflow is what drives her to commit suicide. There are glimpses of Lady Macbeth's guilt, although she attempts to conceal it. Just before Duncan's murder is committed, Lady Macbeth shows remorse, and thus proves that the degradation of her conscience begins early in the play. She exclaims "Had he not resembled my father as he slept, I had done ‘t." (II.ii.16-17). She speaks of Duncan, minutes before his dreaded murder, but does not reveal her guilt to anyone, since she is alone on stage (soliloquy). Lady Macbeth's overflowing compunction seeks for escape, and the only exit it finds is her sleep. Since Macbeth provides an outlet for his guilt through his hallucinations and his wife, it does not consume him, but it does bring suspicion into his allies. Lady Macbeth pretends to be strong and hides her guilt, which ultimately destroys her. In conclusion, the evil actions that each has caused burdens them with guilt, that harm them in distinct ways.

Macbeth's evil actions destroy his victim's lives, and their family's, and because of this, it was bound to happen that someone destroyed Macbeth in revenge. Thus, it is serving evil that ultimately ends Macbeth's being. Macbeth kills Banquo and even if there is no direct reply from Banquo's sons or family, it is known in Scottish history that they become kings. Macbeth murders Duncan, and sets the blame of his action on Malcolm and Donalbain. Obviously, they do not sit still Macbeth abuses what is rightfully theirs, and they set off to different countries to seek for help.

"The son of Duncan

(from whom this tyrant holds the due of birth)

Lives in the English court and received

Of the most pious Edward with such grace

That the malevolence of fortune nothing

Takes from his high respect. (III.vi.8-) Then they return with an English army, which ultimately brings Macbeth's destruction. Duncan's murder also turns his lords against him, and when the time of the battle comes, they desert him. His people, obviously not content with his rule also desert him, and when the opposing army arrives at Dunsinane hill, Macbeth's army leaves. "Where they not forced with those that should be ours,"(V.v.5). Macbeth has lost "honor, love, obedience, troops of friends" (V.iii.), because of his evil deeds, and this is what physically ends Macbeth. Feeling anger towards Macduff for having fled, Macbeth murders his whole family, and makes Macduff a powerful enemy. When Malcolm returns from England with an army, Macduff is there, as are most of the Lords of Scotland. But Macduff searches for Macbeth with the sole purpose of avenging his family. They fight and Macduff is victorious, he slays Macbeth, and proclaims Malcolm the rightful king of Scotland. As a result of his abuse on his people and his evil actions Macbeth's reign is brought to an end. For having followed evil, Macbeth is killed...

Everything Macbeth and Lady Macbeth have done has scarred them mentally, and they each show it differently. Macbeth has lost all moral values, and because of that, the only way his morals are expressed are through his spontaneous visions. Lady Macbeth has lost her capability to express concern, or worry, since she hardened herself to get through Duncan's murder, and her outlet is during her sleep. We witness Macbeth's first illusion as soon as he commits the murder, and he tells Lady Macbeth,

"Methought I heard a voice cry ‘Sleep no more! Macbeth does murder sleep'- the innocent sleep,

Sleep that knits up the raveled sleave of care,

The death of each day's life, sore labor's bath,

Balm of hurt minds, great nature's second course,

Chief nourisher of life in feast. " (II.ii.47-5) And after she replies confounded, "What do you mean?"(II.ii.5) he goes on about this voice, "Still it cried ‘Sleep no more!' to all the house. / ‘Glamis hath murdered sleep, and therefore Cawdor / Shall sleep no more. Macbeth shall sleep no more'. "(II.ii.54-56). This is the first proof of Macbeth's resurgent conscience, that expresses itself through hallucinations. Macbeth knows that this deed will bother him forever. Lady Macbeth embraces evil earlier than Macbeth,

Is it the Antichrist which rebels at the notion of sublimation with cynicism and super realism which should be blamed? Without the earth, wed have no security- no gravity. Thailand Today

Today, we would like to talk about Thailand, a booming country in southeast Asia. Due to the brevity of this talk we will only give a brief overview of the geography, historic background, religion and weather, and conclude with the Current Economic Stability of Thailand.

Geographically the kingdom of Thailand coverings an area of 514,000 square kilometers and lies in the heart of Southeast Asia roughly equidistant between India and China. It borders Burma to the West, North Laos to the North, Northeast Cambodia in the east and Malaysia in the South. Its population is currently 61.5 million.

In order to let people have a general impression about Thailand, I will say a few words about this Kingdom¡¦s fascinating historic background. Thailand is an island country; the unified Thai kingdom was established in the mid-14th century. It was known as Siam until 1. Of the multiple conflicts which have taken place in South East Asia Thailand has never been ruled or under jurisdiction by any European power. The only major shift of power in the last century was a bloodless revolution in 1 which led to a constitutional monarchy. Additionally, during World War an alliance was formed with Japan. After the war Thailand realized an alliance with the US would better suit its demands.

Thailand is one of the largest practicing Buddhist countries in the world. This national religion is Theravada Buddhism, a branch of Hinayana Buddhism, which is practiced by more than 0% of all Thais. About 10 million of whom live in the capital city of Bangkok.

Thailand has a warm tropical climate affected by an annual monsoon or rainy season from June to October. The rest of the year is mostly dry and the temperature averages between 75 to degrees Fahrenheit, with the highest temperatures from march to may and the lowest in December and January. This weather enrich many kinds of tropical fruits and crops.

Thailand¡¦s economy has its own unique characteristics. Although an early dependence on agriculture was the basis of the economic stability, the economy now rides on a strategic mix of manufacturing and service-based industries because of scarce natural recourses. In terms of foreign exchange, tourism continues to provide the biggest source of revenue with an average of over 6,000,000 visitors per year since 15. The other leading economic stabilizers are the textile and garment manufacturing industries and the large quantity of high quality rice which is exported every year. It is important to mention that over 5% of the Thailand¡¦s economy is controlled by overseas Chinese, that intensively builds up a strong relationship between these two countries in trading and doing business together, growing together.

What¡¦s more, exporting and tourism are the chief reliance of Thailand. Thailand has perhaps produced the most dramatic shift in it economy in the past fifteen years of all the Southeast Asian countries. Over the past six years the country¡¦s economy has grown an average of some 8% and is expected to maintain this rate of growth over the next two to three.

Growth in the financial sector has paralleled that of industry and commerce in general with the establishment in 10 of the stock exchange of Thailand and expansion and strengthening of financial institutions. International investment particularly in the manufacturing sector has been substantially encouraged by the board of investment which grants tax concession and other privileges to suitable applicants.

To sum up, Thailand strives towards their goals of establishing the country as a regional financial and manufacturing hub. visitors to this still fascinating land will no doubt contend themselves with the excellent value this economic tiger offers as a tourist playground.

Chapter 8 UtilitarianismUtilitarianism is 1). Consequentialist actions are not intrinsically r/w; the morality of an act depends on its consequences.). Teleological Its aim/goal is the great net happiness for all.

Custom writing service can write essays on Remember the Titans

We all desire happiness; - only it is intrinsically good. But it is not a selfish (egoistic) hedonism We are naturally sympathetic and concerned with promoting the happiness of others too.Whose happiness counts? That of all sentient beings equally. What is happiness? Pleasure and the absence of pain.Beware not all preferences / choices are well-informed ; Mere sentiment is subjective, without rational grounds.Mill wants a rational principle The principle of Utility or Greatest Happiness Principle.GHP = Actions are right in proportion as they tend to promote H ; wrong as they tend to produce unhappiness. Are intentions morally relevant? NoNot to the right / wrongness of an act ; But they indicate the moral character of the agentPeople with good intentions are more likely to do good acts.Act Utilitarianism any act that maximizes happiness is right. Rule Utilitariansism only acts licensed by rules with maximize Happiness are right.Follow the rule, even if doing so doesn't maximize Happiness in a given case.Mo Tzu (5th Century) adopted the basic Confucian principle of Jen (love) but (unlike Confucius) insisted it be applied equally and universally Confuscian did not believe in equality - ???The good society is achieved by actively seeking / promoting the good of the many.We are obligated to do no harm (ahimsa) & Promote the happiness of others. Jeremy Bentham (1748-18)Inspired by Epicurus & Hume, he held that certain character traits are virtues because of their utility. Utility alone is the criterion of good law and political obligation. The utilitarian (hedonic) Calculus A unit of happiness = a hedon (utile)7 facts to be considered and given equal weight intensity; duration; certainty; propinquity; fecundity; purity; extent = pg. 86If a policy produces more pleasure than pain, then it is good, justified.John Stuart Mill (1806-7)Stress education to overcome ignorance & superstition. For Bentham, one pleasure is as good as any other; only quality counts. For Mill, there are higher and lower pleasure, quality is more important. For Bentham his concerns were poetry vs. pushpin, for Mill human vs. animal.Besides pleasure, Mill also valued human dignity & integrity.Since the freedom to make ones own decisions is basic to happiness, dignity, and autonomy must be respected. Mill rejected B's justice as impartiality in favor of a conception focused on autonomy or self determination. The "no harm principle" is more important than the duty to maximize Happiness, liberty right protect self = regarding actsSociety can regulate other-regarding acts"Harm" = physical injury, violating rights, deception, exploitation, exc. 1). Challenges the narrow western view of the moral community to bring in all sentient beings; to exclude / discount non-humans is to be speciesist.Equal consideration does not mean equal treatment (e.g. voting)Some criticism By emphasizing equality ; impartiality it fails to take seriously distinctions between persons. A duty to maximize Happiness can undermine personal integrity & responsibility. Utilitarianism tends to alienate us from conscience & moral sentiments. Since people do not have intrinsic value, they can be used as mere means What is useful is not always fair (in terms of what people deserve) The attractive simplicity of Utilitarianism. Morality is determined only by an acts consequences is also its main weakness; it is incomplete. Utility is important, but other considerations must be brought in.

Comparing the opening scene of two different versions of Shakespeare's' MacbethI am going to look at two different versions of Shakespeare's Macbeth and study the differences in the first scene and why they have been changed in different ways. Both the Welles and the Polanski versions are similar to Shakespeare's version, but have been slightly altered. Welles has extended the dialogue by adding in the ingredients of the witches cauldron. This helps not only create an eeriness as the ingredients are strange, but also gives a more foul image of the witches' as the ingredients are revolting. Because the dialogue has been changed to include this, it is immediately known who the three characters are, as the revolting ingredients are very stereotypical of witches. The first line in the Welles and the Polanski version is said by all the witches, whereas in the Shakespeare version, it is said by only one of the witches. Having all the witches say the first line helps catch the viewers attention as it seems more dramatic, it also brings the witches together as a unit. The Polanski version has been shortened and simplified slightly. Less is said creating a mysterious effect and also leaving more to the imagination. It is not as obvious that the three characters are witches in the Polanski version, this also makes the characters seem mysterious. The Polanski version seems a lot less rehearsed then the Welles version, making you think more about what is actually going on. Both versions end with the same line"There to meet with Macbeth".

Help with essay on Comparing the opening scene of two different versions of Shakespeare's' Macbeth

This brings both scenes to a close explaining what they are planning, and it also incorporates the name of the film. The dialogue is delivered in very different ways within the two versions. The witches in the Welles version have strange voices making the dialogue stand out. It also makes them appear different creating an uneasiness about them. The dialogue flows smoothly making it seem as if the witches know what the others are going to say. This once again makes them appear more of a unit. The witches pause before saying the last word, ‘Macbeth'. This helps make more of an impact on the name as there is silence before it is said making you think about what is happening. It is said in a whispery voice making it stand out from the rest of the dialogue which means you are more likely to remember it. In the Polanski version, the witches has relatively normal voices. They sound old, as they speak slowly. This gives you more time to concentrate on what is being said, and to think about what is happening. When the witches speak together, they do not speak at exactly the same time. This makes it look a lot less rehearsed and creates a strange ‘droney' sound making it more mysterious and haunting. The witches stop briefly in the middle of the dialogue to carry out an action. This also gives you more time to look at what they are doing and think about what is happening. Apart from that, there aren't any definite stops during the dialogue, once again showing it to be less rehearsed then Welles version. In the Welles version, there is a constant background music. The music is slightly strange and scary, which creates an eeriness about the witches. There are little sound effects as there is music, but there is the sound of the cauldron bubbling. This makes the ingredients seem even more revolting as the sound of the bubbling is unpleasant. The music stops briefly before the witches say their last word ‘Macbeth'. As I explained, this is make a bigger impact on the name. The music changes slightly when the credits roll. It turns into more of a marching music. This could symbolise many things. The first thing that comes to mind is the fact that the story contains many battles and marching is often associated with soldiers. There isn't any background music in the Polanski version until near the end of the scene. There are however, many sound effects. The fact that there is no music helps emphasise the isolation of the witches and the fact they are in a very desolate place. This is emphasised even more with the use of the sound effects. There is the sound of a bird, this once again makes the place seem very far from civilisation. There was also the sound of the three witches and their actions which sound loud as there is no background music. Towards the end of the scene, There is music. However, the music is very strange, and is in no way tuneful. It is in a minor key which helps the scene to appear very eerie. The three witches in the Welles version are easily recognised as witches. They are wearing long black cloaks which is stereotypical of witches. As I mentioned, their dialogue is also very stereotypical of witches meaning you can immediately recognise them as witches. The witches in the Polanski version are not so stereotypical. They look very ragged, making you immediately aware that they are different to normal people. However, it is mainly due to their dialogue that they are recognised as witches, and not so much their image. The Welles version is black and white due to the fact it was made in 148. The witches appear as silhouettes on a cliff against a whitish sky. This means that there isn't a clear view of the witches and what they look like, creating an eeriness about them. The scene consists mainly of shots of there cauldron which is bubbling violently. Together with the dialogue, the whole scene seems rather sickening as the image of the cauldron bubbling is not pleasing to the eye. The contents of the cauldron appears to be black and very thick, showing that many ingredients have been put in. The last word ‘Macbeth' is said as they hold up a doll that they have created from the mixture in the cauldron. This shows that the doll is meant to represent Macbeth. The first shot in the Polanski version is a long shot of the horizon. The clouds in the sky move very quickly showing time passing and to help create a mysterious setting. The fact that a long shot is used shows us how isolated the place is. It appears to be a waste land with little life. The witches then meet here and the camera shots are all very close up to show in detail what they are doing. There is a brief long shot of a seagull to once again show the silence of the place. As the witches depart, the camera stays still and the witches move further and further away from it into the mist. They eventually disappear as the screen becomes overcome with mist and changes to the title screen. This gives the effect the witches are just disappearing to somewhere we do not know. The title fades on, and then fades off again, giving no definite ending to the scene creating an uneasiness. The music doesn't change through-out the title scene. On the whole, I think the visual images in the Polanski version leave you with more to think about, whereas in the Welles version it is easily known what is going on.

In the history of socialism, the fundamental conceptions and ideas of this political ideology have been encased in many different forms and provided us with doctrines of great thinkers. For example Thomas Moore, Saint Simon, who were both utopian socialists They "…Postulated on ideal socialism based on peaceful and harmonious social transitions, public ownership…equal access to education opportunity (Guy, p.504).1 The members of "Fabian society' who believed that socialism could be established without radical change of government, but rather it could be established through "…moderate and limited change"(Guy, P.84).1 Finally, Karl Marx who wrote about the equality and opportunity for all has shaped probably every socialist party platform and ideology in the world today.Through the ideas of these intellectuals and many others, the beliefs of democratic socialism arose. Democratic socialism has the undertones of the essential beliefs of socialism including a few other notions"Social democracy is an international movement for freedom, social justice and solidarity. Its goal is to achieve a peaceful world where these basic values can be enhanced and where each individual can live a meaningful life with the full development of his or her personality and talents and with the guarantee of human and civil rights."

To Kill A Mockingbird was written around a time where Jim Crow laws and interracial marriage laws were in affect. This novel focused a lot on prejudice and the relationships between whites and African Americans in the southern United States. Maycomb had very different rules for blacks and whites. There were many incidents where prejudice was explored and experienced by the town. Jem and Scout learned a lot about prejudice from Atticus, Miss Maudie, Aunt Alexandra, Calpurnia, and the town.

Prejudice was viewed very differently from person to person in Maycomb. Miss Maudie was a very unique being. She loved to garden, but even she liked the weeds that sometimes were in her garden. Miss Maudie's feelings toward her plants were symbolic to the way some town people felt about others. Scout recollected, "[Miss Maudie] loved everything that grew in God's green earth, even the weeds. With one exception. If she found a blade of nut grass in her yard it was like the Second Battle of the Marne." Miss Maudie explained that "one sprig of nut grass can ruin a whole yard" (4). This gave you two points of view on the overall story the Ewells were the nut grasses or the African Americans were the nut grasses.

Furthermore, the town continued to play a role in the development of prejudice of Maycomb. When Jem was in the Radley yard, and Mr. Nathan Radley was shooting at him the town automatically assumed the trespasser was black. The town said, "Mr. Radley shot at a Negro in his collard patch" (54). No one had any proof that the trespasser was black. There was a stereotype that just made them assume the trespasser was black. Mr. Radley further degraded blacks by saying that "he won't aim high, be it dog, or be it nigger" (54). He was comparing a black person to an animal. In another town incident, Bob Ewell declared on the stand, "Jedge, I've asked this county for fifteen years to clean out that nest down yonder, they're dangerous to live around ‘sides devaluin' my property" (175). Also during the trial, Scout learned that Mayella experienced a lot what mixed children do "white people wouldn't have anything to do with her because she lived among pigs; Negroes wouldn't have anything to do with her because she was white" (1). There was class prejudice just as much as race prejudice in a town. Atticus also explained that when it was a white man's word against a black man's word, the white man would always win. There was also misunderstanding as to why the children sat in the colored balcony. Miss Stephanie Crawford didn't understand why they would choose to sit there. She thought that maybe Atticus wanted them to sit there so he could prove a point in court. A lot of the town people can't understand why the blacks are dissatisfied in the world. Scout's teacher, Miss Gates, said, "It's time somebody taught them a lesson, they were gettin' way above themselves, an' the next thing they think they can do is marry us." Scout thought, "How can you hate Hitler so bad an' then turn around and be ugly about the folks right at home" (47).

Jem and Scout were raised by a group of people Aunt Alexandra, Calpurnia, and of course, Atticus. They had different influences on the children. Calpurnia felt that the children should speak the proper way for white children. She wasn't racist; she was simply acting in a way that was consistent with life in the southern United States during the time period. Dill and Jem were also prejudice towards Scout because she was a girl. So they sometimes didn't invite her to play with them. Scout also realized that she, Jem, and Dill affected much of the same kinds of prejudices on boo Radley that Maycomb did on Tom Robinson. Scout saw that he couldn't possibly be capable of the frantic rumors she's always heard. Now they were able to understand how Maycomb felt towards the people on the fringe of society.

Atticus was a major part in the development of prejudice, but he had no prejudice in him. He had no problem with his children attending Calpurnia's church, or with Calpurnia raising his children. He didn't allow any racial slurs to be spoken. He went to a black community to tell Helen of her husband's, Tom Robinson, death. Most people would've sent a messenger to tell her the news. Therefore, he wasn't racist. He wasn't affected by Mrs. Duboses sarcastic language, Miss Stephanie's gossip, or even Walter Cunningham's death threat. He didn't fight back when Bob Ewell spit in his face because he knew that he hurt Bob's pride and that was bad enough. Atticus accepted those people because he was an expert at getting into someone's head and irritating them until they saw the light.

In contrast to Atticus, Aunt Alexandra had different views of prejudice. Her prejudices were against blacks. Aunt Alexandra assumed that Calpurnia would take her bags when she arrived at the Finch house. Jem ended up doing it. Scout formed a caste system of Maycomb county due to Aunt Alexandra's influence. "The older citizens, the present generation of people who had lived side by side for years and years, were utterly predictable to one another" (11). Scout later learned that living side by side for years doesn't change human nature. Jem explained to Scout the real caste system of Maycomb County. "There's four kind of folks in the world. There's the ordinary kind like us and the neighbors, there's the kind like the Cunninghams out in the woods, the kind like the Ewells down at the dump, and the Negroes" (6). Jem said it didn't get much more simply than that.+ Aunt Alexandra didn't want the children to visit Calpurnia's church or even be raised by her. She said, "I don't think the children have suffered one bit having her brought them up. If anything, she's been harder on them in some ways than a mother would have been" (17). Aunt Alexandra didn't want Scout to be around Walter Cunningham Jr. because Finch women shouldn't be interested in trash. Aunt Alexandra called Walter trash. At this point, Scout was thoroughly confused. She didn't know what being a lady was all about. She didn't know if Atticus or Aunt Alexandra was right.

In conclusion, out of all of the prejudices the children had come across, they grew up knowing the truth. Scout knew how to be a lady. She knew what prejudices were and what true bravery was. She knew how to be the better person. In these times, blacks had different sitting in restaurants and even courthouses as you see in the novel. They had different drinking fountains, restrooms, and special places on the bus. Ironically, four black people gave their seats in the "colored balcony" in the courtroom to Dill, Jem, Scout, and Reverend Skyes. This just showed that times would change eventually. Maybe not then, but sometime. Prejudices were all around, but it took children to see the light; the light of love and compassion to all. Even children had prejudices that needed to be overcome. They learned form their mistakes. They saw the prejudices they were inflicting on Boo Radley. The children learned a lot from the people around them. As do we. There are still prejudices today, but we still learn.
