"Lindsay your breakfast is ready!" In from the living room she ran and quickly seated herself at thekitchen table. Waiting for him was a plate of steaming scrambled eggs, a warm, crisp piece of tastand a cool, fresh glass or orange juice. "Now Lindsay, you know that breakfast is the mostimportant meal of the day, so eat up!" exclaimed her mother. Meanwhile, Elton and Emily Egg,

Trevor Toast and Omar Orange Jucie were scared out of their minds. They were about to enter thedigestive syestem, known as the ‘Abyss' by foods. Every food knows of it, but really knows nothingabout it and thay all are frightened by it. However, Elton, Emily, Trevor and Omar were unawarethat they would provide a healthy start to Lindsay's day and supply her with nutrients that will keepher up and running.

Lindsay's digestive system took action before she even forked the first savory yellowmorsel into her mouth. At the scent of the food, her salivary glands began to form saliva in hermouth, to prepare for one of the first steps of digestion. The food is chewed into finer pieces byLindsay's teeth (the molars and pre-molars are the workhorses). When the food is in smallerpieces, the digestive juices in the stomach are able to work better. Lindsay's tongue assists duringthe chewing process by moving the food around the mouth, so every bit is broken down. As theseactions are proceeding on, the food is moistened and mixed with saliva, which contains theenzyme ptyalin (salivary amylase). This enzyme begins the digestion of polysaccharides bybreaking them down into disaccharides.

When Lindsay swallows, she uses the coordinates efforts of the tongue, pharynx, andesophagus (see diagram #1). The first phase is voluntary, with the mass of food, or bolus, beingforced into the pharynx by tongue. The rest is simply reflaxes. The tongue blocks the mouth, thesoft palate closes off the nose and the larynx rises to make the epiglottis cloase off the trachea. This happens automatically and prevents breathing so Lindsay will not choke on her food. Thatwould be bad. The food travels down the esophagus, an approximately 10-inch longmucus-covered tube and takes about to seconds to reach the stomach. The food is pushedalong by waves of muscle contractions and then relaxations called peristalsis (see diagram #).

Elton, Emily, Trevor and Omar finally arrive at the stomacg after passing through thecardiac sphincter (see diagram #). In Lindsay's stomach (a muscular, stretchable sac) the food ismixed and churned, and all of the bits of egg, toast, and orange juice are converted into a thickmixture, called cyyme, due to strong contradictions and very acidic gastric juice (hydrochloric acid, pepsindogen, and mucus). Elton and Emily, wo contain much protein, will undergo digestion in thestomach. Pesinogen is converted into active enzymes called pepsins. When protein chains areexposed to the high acidity in the stomach, their peptide bongs are exposed. Then pepsin does itsjob and cleaves some of the bonds, breaking the huge protein chain down into smaller proteinfragments. Also, many pathogens that are ingested along with Lindsay's breakfast will be killed inthe stomach by the high acidity of the gastric fluid. In some cases if the food digested containsexcess amounts of harmful bacteria, the muscles in the stomach squeeze themselves together topush the food back up through the esophagus and out the mouth- in other words- throwing up.Fortunately, Lindsay's nutritios breakfast contained no bacteria of the sort. After sitting idle in thestomach for about two hours, Lindsay's stomach is emptied by waves of contraction and relaxation(peristalsis). As the chyme approached the pyloric sphincter at the base of the stomach, a strongconraction occurs, and most of the chyme is squeezed backwards into the stomach; only a smallamount moves into the duodenum (first part of small intestine). Over time however, all of thechyme (Elton, Emily, Trevor, and Omar) will enter the small intestine.

A tubular organ about feet in length, the small intestine is where the absorption andfinal digestion of protein and carboydrates from Lindsay's breafast will occur. It is also where theinitial digestion of fats begins. The duodenum is the receiving area for bile (bile salts, pigments, cholesterol, lecithin), which is secreted by the liver, and juices from the pancreas (see diagram #4).A small sac connected to the bile duct, called the gall bladder (see diagram #5), stored andconcentrates extra bile. It is concentrated when the gallbladder reabsorbs water and regulates themovement of bile into the small intestine. Fats the chyme stimulate gallbladder concentrations, which forced bile into the duodenum.

Fat molecules naturally clump together and form gat glabules. Bile salts from bile coat thefat globules and undergo emulsification to break down the large clumps of fat (see diagram #6).This must be done in orger for the fat splitting enzyme, lipase, to work. Lipase comes from thepancreas and breaks down triglycerides into free fatty acids and monoglycerides. On the folds ofthe intestinal mucosa there are millions of absporptive structures called villi. On each villi there are1,700 microvilli. These unique structures increase the surface area of the small intestiveimmensely; overall, the small intestine has the surface area about that of a tennis court. The fattyacit and monoglyceride molecules are absorbed into lymph vessels and later, the bloodstream.

Protein digestion continues in the small intestine when trypsin and chymotrypsin from thepancreas break proteins down into protein fragments; craboyxypeptidase from the pancreas andaminopeptidase, which is produced from the intestinal lining, convert the protein fragments intoamino acids that are absorbed by the villi into the bloodstream.

Although carboydrate digestion bega in Lindsay's mouth with the breakdown ofpolysaccharides into disaccharides, it ends in the small intestince. Pancreatic amylase continuesthe digestion of polysaccharides into disaccharides within the small intestine. Furthermore, disaccharidases conclude carbohydrate digestion by converting disaccharides intomonosaccharides (e.g. glucose). Disaccharidases are enzymes that come from the small intestinallining. The monosaccharides are absorbed into the bloodstream. The first place the blood goes isthe liver, where it is detoxified. Then, it is sent out to nourish the body with the nutrients it iscarrying.

All of the material not absorbed in the small intestine is transported into the large intestine. This includes minerals, water, electrolytes and even vitamin K. These are absorbed into thebloodstream and any matter left over, are feces. As water moves across the intestinal lining, wastematerial becomes concentrated. Feces may stay in the colon for to even 10 days until they areexpelled. They are stored in the last part of the large intestine, the rectum. When defecation istriggered manually, feced are ejected out the anus.

Lindsay, who is in elementary school and has not yet gone through biology, does notknow how efficientyly her body absorbs and uses the nutrients she ingests. The all-star breakfastcast, Elton and Emily, Trevor, and Omar have gone through the breahtaking process of digestion, just like many foods before them. Never will they forget their conversion from whole, nutritiousfood, to hard, water-less feces. However, they can say that they as members of the digested have helped to maintain the life of a human, by supplying her with the nourishment needed for a dayswork.

Mason Cooley said, "Illusions are hazardous and so are disillusions. In the other words illusions and disillusions can bring harm and mischief. This is a proven fact in "The Glass Menagerie" by Tennessee Williams. I agree with the quote.

Custom writing service can write essays on The Glass Menagerie

In the play " The Glass Menagerie" the character Laura has an illusion. She cannot accept reality. She tries to hide and run away from it. Laura is freighted and sickened by school and decides not to attend school. She goes to the zoo, museum and most of all the glass menagerie. The glass menagerie is symbolism of a place to where Laura escapes. Its Laura's own world, which is just as fragile as her. Her thoughts have made her very fragile and paranoid of the outside world. After her mother discovers Laura's motives she's bewildered and astonished. Her mother gets very upset. Laura's illusion has hurt her mother greatly.

In the play " The Glass Menagerie" the character Amanda has an illusion. Amanda's illusion is that she cannot accept her daughter for whom she really is. Amanda has set unrealistic dreams and goals for Laura. In Amanda's eyes Laura is not crippled and she can accomplish anything. By making herself belief these false facts, she enforces them on to Laura. She pushes Laura by making her go to school and making her belief that she has gentlemen callers. Amanda's actions make things worse. The pressure makes Laura want to escape more and more. The author uses Laura's glass collection as symbolism. Laura plays with the glass collection to escape reality and she's just as fragile as her collection. If Laura's mother doesn't stop pressuring Laura, she will shatter like her collection. In conclusion both characters have showed us their illusions. They have shown the affect of themselves and the people around them. The quote proved itself in this work of literature.

Atkins, M.D. nearly 0 years ago, is a unique and popular weight loss method that is the subject of much debate. The Atkins diet has basically four phases; the first phase is called the induction phase¹. This phase is where the dieter restricts carbohydrate consumption to 0 grams each day. The dieter receives carbohydrates primarily from salad and other non-starchy vegetables during this phase. Phase two is called the ongoing weight loss phase². During this phase, the dieter adds carbohydrates in the form of nutrient-dense and fiber-rich foods by increasing his carbohydrate intake to 5 grams per day for the first week. Subsequently the dieter would incrementally increase carbohydrate daily intake by 5 grams per day (to a maximum of 5 grams per week) until weight loss stops. For example, in the second week, the dieter's carbohydrate daily intake would be 0 grams per day; the third week would increase to 5 grams per day. Once weight loss stops, the dieter would then decrease his daily carbohydrate intake by 5 grams per day to continue a sustained, moderate weight loss. The third phase is called the pre-maintenance phase³. This phase starts when the dieter has between 5 and 10 pounds left to lose. It is during this phase that one makes the transition from weight loss to weight maintenance by increasing the daily carbohydrate intake in 10 gram increments each week so long as very gradual weight loss is maintained.

Phase four is called lifetime maintenance. The dieter may select from a wide variety of foods while controlling carbohydrate intake to ensure weight maintenance and a sense of well-being.

COMPARING ATKINS DIET TO U.S. RECOMMENDED DAILY ALLOWANCES

When comparing a sample daily diet (above) that adheres to the high protein philosophy of the Atkins diet to the U.S. Recommended Daily Allowances, one will find that many of the important vitamins and minerals recommended daily amounts are either met or exceeded. There are some significant exceptions in the sample, however, like daily recommended fiber, vitamin E and calcium for men and women in the 1-50 age category. Iron is also lower than the recommended allowance for women. This particular sample daily diet also only carries 1 calories, well below the 000 calories recommended for an average person. Dr. Atkins himself refers individuals on his diet to be checked by their personal physician to verify that this diet is allowable for them. The fact of the matter is that diet and therefore dietary needs are highly individualized. The fact that one diet makes a person lose weight and another person gain weight on the same diet would tend to lead you to this decision. The basic failure or success of any diet, be it a fad diet, a fact-based diet, or just a nutritious diet that follows the Recommended Daily Allowances of vitamins and minerals remains key to the person on said diet. Many believe that continuing this lifestyle is the foundation for a lifetime of better health. The four principles that form the core of the Atkins diet are supported by a solid foundation of medical and nutritional scientific research. Number one is the fact that you will lose weight. Many thousands of men and women who have followed the Atkins approach to weight loss take off both pounds and inches. In our obese society today, we need to lose many pounds. One in four Americans is considered to be in the obese weight category (more than 0 pounds above their ideal weight). The number two core principle of the Atkins diet is that you will maintain your weight loss. Almost every person that you talk to has experienced one diet or another. Along with this experience, if you really talk to them, most everyone that has lost weight has gained the weight back. This is where the Atkins Nutritional Approach can really shine over other weight control programs. Most dieters return to their bad habits and do not like depriving themselves of the foods that they crave. This can be a by-product of a low-fat, low-calorie diet (i.e. hunger). People who use the Atkins approach gradually find their individual level of carbohydrate intake, the tool that allows them to maintain a healthy weight for a lifetime. The third core principle involves good health. With Atkins, you meet your nutritional needs by eating healthy, wholesome foods and omitting junk food. People who use the Atkins approach start feeling good usually long before their target weight is achieved. This is usually due to the abandonment of refined carbohydrates for whole, unrefined food. The fourth phase lays the groundwork for disease prevention. By using the Atkins approach and following a controlled carbohydrate intake in your individual diet, one can lower your insulin production and people at high risk for chronic illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension and diabetes will see a marked improvement in their clinical parameters. There may be hazards involved with using this high protein diet. When using the Atkins diet your body is sent into ketosis. This allows the body to get its energy from ketones, the breakdown of fat stores in the body. By using logical thinking, this will basically melt away the fat in your body. According to an article located on WebMD this ketosis can cause excess strain on your liver, kidneys, intestinal tract, cause lowered appetite, nausea and can cause bad breath in a small number of people. According to the American Heart Association, "the protein rich foods that are promoted by the Atkins diet also contain large amounts of saturated fats. Eating large amounts of high-fat foods for a sustained period raises the risk of coronary heart disease, diabetes, stroke and several types of cancer. People who can't use excess protein effectively may be at higher risk of kidney and liver disorders, and osteoporosis." (AHA website). The American Kidney Fund is warning Americans that "high-protein diets place such a significant strain on the kidneys that even conditioned athletes can become dehydrated, according to researchers at the University of Connecticut." (AKF website). In a study of 6 obese men and women, performed by Gary D. Foster, PhD, clinical director of the weight and eating disorders program at the University of Pennsylvania, half were randomly assigned the Atkins diet and the other half were prescribed a low-fat diet. Those on the Atkins diet lost significantly more weight in the first six months of the study. After 1 months, there was little difference in weight between those on the Atkins diet and those who stayed on the low-fat diet. Dr. Foster concluded that the Atkins diet works at producing weight loss. The Atkins diet also improved triglycerides and HDL cholesterol. The Atkins people stayed in the study longer (15% versus a 0% dropout rate). But, eating a lot of protein is hard on the kidneys and liver. And there's some evidence that a high-protein diet promotes bone loss." (www.WebMD.com, May 1, 00)The information that is available about the Atkins diet causes concern for many aspects of its long term effects. There is a real controversy about the benefits and long term potential for damage to non-replaceable organs in your body.Atkins, R. C. (00). Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution. New York Avon Books.

Money plays main role in both the problems mentioned in the issue. I agree with the given issue, that money should be allocated for immediate social problems rather than the research. It doesn't mean that Research is not important.Today's social problems include Illiteracy, Unemployment, poverty and etc. First of all, everyone should get rid of these problems, which helps for the present as well as the future generations. The future generation will be more benefited if the present generation is satisfied with the available resources. Moreover, we can also say that these problems are interdependent, because, if we want to diminish the poverty there should not be any unemployment problem, which depends upon the education. Thus it's not very tough to solve these problems. If we concentrate on anyone problem, automatically all problems will be solved. But when we consider the research it helps only for the future generation as well as it takes very long time to get the result.Research is also crucial. It is impossible to live in this modern world, if our predecessor wouldn't have spent enough money in research. Research should be executed in order to promote our way of living and to raise the enthusiasm among the researchers. Moreover it can find solution for many present disputable problems such as, remedy for present incurable disease. Although, If we consider a person who suffers from fever and chronic disease, it is important for him to cure the fever first and then proceeding with the treatment for the chronic disease. So it is significant to solve the immediate problems.Allocating the money wholly depends up on the Economy of the government. It suits not only for the government but also for a family. If the family is rich, then he/she will save the money for the future, otherwise he/ she will solve the immediate problems. Similarly the developing country will have to solve the immediate social problems and then allocate the money for research, but the well-developed country can allocate equal money for both research and social problems.

In addition, research can solve the unemployment problems. Well- developed countries can bring out the new research programs and thus can reduce the present unemployment problem that helps to develop the future generation. But it is suitable only for the people who are well educated. So lack of education is the immediate social problem and has to be solved first. In sum, by figuring out the immediate social problems, research can also be benefited. Thus Allocating money for the immediate social problems is in great need rather than the research that helps the future generation.

Could Socialism Take Over a Capitalist America?

Socialism is "a concept applied to various theories of social organization, which aim to reorganize society on the basis of cooperation rather than competition."(1) It was initially meant to abolish inequality. As a whole, the entire reform system is "utopian", or overly perfect. Socialism is basically the collection of ideals that entirely contradict all that America has run on from the beginning. Could socialism ever really replace capitalism as America's main form of government? Many experts believe capitalism may eventually evolve into socialism, but I this goes against an order that America has profited off of in many ways and and we certainly would not change.

First of all America simply would not switch, even at the most gradual pace to socialism, purely out of fear. This is mostly fear in the political spectrum. Socialism as a political force seeks the adoption of certain reforms, such as government control of production and distribution to better serve the interests of the masses, rather than the individual. Those advocationg for the reforms, demand government ownership of all of the country's natural resources for mass-benefit as well. In an economic sense it would appear that the government has an overabundance of power, which we as American's would not stand for. We set up our entire government with a system of checks and balances involving the people governed, to prevent such an occurance as that. The earliest settlers came from a situation where they had no "say" in what went on, and they knew better than to repeat a government they had just retreated from. Fear of repeating the past would be a simple enough motivation to keep us away from socialism.

America is also one of the richest nations in the world. We can dedicate this mainly to capitalism. Capitalism, much like socialism, is a social systerm. Although capitalism is the exact opposite, emphasizing individual rights rather than the rights of the general public. We've held this ideal, and many others since the beginning. Taking pride in individual freedoms, like private property and ownership. Capitalism is not only related in an economic sense. It is the idea of a free-thinking and free-acting society, running on the motto, "Man is an end in himself, and not a slave to the ends of ‘society'"(Capitalism.org) In our system we thrive off the fact that a poor laborer could become a millionaire, and climbing up the ladder of life is entirely possible. The end comes down to why we would want to fix a social system that has benefitted so many people in so many ways. It would be ludacris.

Socialism asks for "an obtainment of social equality"(home.vicnet.net). Only in a perfect society could this take place, and no society or the ideals in which they live are perfect. People living in a socialist reform will not be given that inalienable right to judge as we have, because when given the right to judge one must also be prepared to BE judged. That judgement could be based on the color of ones skin, or the content of their character. Either way would lead to inequality; for people will not all agree in their assessments. We, as Americans are priviledged to have these rights from birth, and I know we appreciate being able to persue happiness by our own means. Americans show their pride in or out of tragedy, and it is because we are given these rights as an individual that we are feel this pride. People who run as a whole are denied that pride, and that is what makes America powerful. Our pride. It would go against America's order to become a socialist nation. Furthermore, it would surely lead to our decline as a major power simply from our loss of pride. For the aforementioned reasons, I strongly feel that America will not at any pace evolve into a socialist nation. It contradicts all ideals we've held strong forever.
