With Dimmesdale, because the way he handled his sins was different, so the effect was different too. Chillingworth accepted to give up his medical career, just because his hatred to Hester and her lover was too much. All he did is making Dimmesdale feel guilty about his sins. Actually he was an evil. So that Hester had to be scared of him when she looked at his face and realized how awful he was. But with what he did, his crime had to terminate when Dimmesdale had escaped him. He got nothing after seven years, but a death. An unworthy death!
