Niccolo Machiavelli (146-157), an Italian statesman and political philosopher was employed on diplomatic missions as defence secretary of the Republic of Florence. After retiring from public life he wrote his famous work, The Prince (15), describing the means by which a leader may gain and maintain power.

Although written 500 years ago, Machiavelli's views still have many relevant implications for modern society. Machiavelli was among the first proponents of organisational theory and the first to identify the relationship between effective leadership and the power it exercises over scarce human resources in the organisational environment. Even though Machiavelli's intention was to focus on political organisations, governments and leaders; the fact that all organisations are to a certain extend influenced by power and politics, his ideas and recommendations are relevant to all organisations, including businesses.

Machiavelli's intention was to advise his "Prince" in politics and political behaviour. Therefore, in order to understand Machiavelli's perceptions in the context of modern organisations it is useful to assess the organisation from the political design perspective. The political perspective explains an organization as a "social system", encompassing diverse, and sometimes contradictory, interests and goals in which competition for resources is expected' . Under this perspective, leaders are politicians. Therefore, this allows us to compare Machiavelli's thoughts and recommendations for the political leader with those for leaders in modern organisations.

Morality in modern organisations

Nowhere in the Prince does Machiavelli make morality or ethics his explicit concern. He clearly and concisely states a foolproof program for a political leader based on his perception and experience in which he implicitly states that all human beings, at all times and in all places, are naturally disposed to protecting their own interests (or simply selfish). That is to say that we primarily seek to realize our own personal interests, goals, or purposes; and that we pursue our interests with varying degrees of rationality.
