The Write Fit

Over the last two years I have been involved in a weight loss program, and I have lost two hundred pounds. Exercise has been a vital part of my success. In order to maintain my weight loss I must get some form of physical activity every day, or burn at least two thousand calories a week. While I was at the fitness center exercising on the elliptical trainer it occurred to me that the writing process is similar to the process I use when I exercise.

Exercise, like an assigned writing topic, is not something I usually enjoy; neither of these things comes naturally. It reminds me of the television show "Mission Impossible." I wish that I were a writer that could sit down and pound out an essay easily, or an exercise fanatic that just can't wait to get to the gym. Alas for me the process is pains taking and requires preparation. Planning is crucial in both the writing process and exercising. Both are not normally part of my daily routine. In order for me to get the task completed I must plan. The plan may have to be modified, but it helps to get the task accomplished. With writing, as well as with exercise, I have to schedule the times during the week that I am willing to devote to the activity. With both activities I need the proper tools to help me be successful. My personal computer, along with my ergonomic keyboard, is essential. I use the Via Christi fitness center when I exercise, because it provides the necessary equipment I need. The fitness center has everything from my favorite elliptical trainer to free-weights. I prefer Adidas cross trainers and bootcut workout pants while I am exercising, because they give me the most comfort and support. Both environments supply me with the necessities required to accomplish my task. Having the necessary tools and environment is just the beginning of the process. In writing I have to think about the topic. How I can relate something I know to the subject? I have to gather information on the topic and scan for something that will strike a spark. With exercise I have to look for an activity that will keep me entertained, as well as add diversity to my routine and provide me with the best outcome. I am constantly looking for something new, whether it be targeting cardio or building muscle. Asking others for help is beneficial in both writing and exercise. A fresh idea can help you when you are blocked, or add variety to an exercise routine. With writing, I may ask my husband, my daughter, or a friend for their perspective. Often this will help me to expand on a subject or see it from another angle. A personal trainer can assist with my exercise routine, helping me refine my skills and work on problem areas. Also, watching other people exercise can motivate me to achieve a higher level of proficiency. When all the planning, research, and organizing have been finished it is time to take action. With writing I start at my appointed time, trying not to put too much pressure on myself to get the project finished in one sitting. I tend to obsess during this process, since I generally feel great pressure to get it completed. Like an unreachable itch, it drives me crazy. If I can at least get something on paper, I can always come back later and revise. The same applies to exercise; my biggest obstacle is just getting out of the house. Once I get to the fitness center and get started I do fine. If I miss my designated time for exercising, it bothers me. I stress over the fact that I have missed it, and then have to make up for lost time. That means staying for an hour compared to thirty minutes. I worry that if I do not exercise I will gain the weight I have lost back. I have learned that short intervals can be just as effective. A sentence or phrase will come to me so I will sit at the computer and type it out, then I am able to expand on it. When I am done I walk away and come back to it later. If my computer is not available I keep a notepad with me so I can jot the idea down and include it in my assignment later. With exercise a ten-minute walk can be beneficial, as opposed to doing nothing. It relieves stress and you may even get an idea on the subject you are writing about. I keep a daily record of the calories I burn, so I know where I am with my goal for the week. I know that whether it is an idea or daily totals I can't rely on my memory. I have to keep records. With writing, as well as exercise, at some point you just have to go for it and do it! Relief comes with the end being in sight. It is time to look at the finished product, edit, and revise. Having another person read, and criticize your work is difficult. What I have written is personal; and sharing it can be scary. It is like having someone look into your soul. However having someone review and give you suggestions can be helpful. Recently I had my husband read this essay, he told me this does not sound like you, write like yourself. Write from your heart. Exercise is very personal as well. However, it is easier for me to take advice on exercise because I am always looking for ways to improve myself. I want to become a better writer, and more effective when I exercise so editing or taking suggestions on improvement is helpful. I may not like what I hear, but after I sit and think about what has been said, I realize it helps. You have to be open to criticism. In writing and in exercising sometimes you have to have enough confidence to get rid of the "fluff." With writing it can be rambling, information that is not related to the subject, or does not make sense. Exercise can be unproductive when you are including activities that are either done improperly or are no longer beneficial. I had a health educator tell me that you should change your routine every six weeks because you body becomes used to it. Changing your routine helps to speed up your metabolism.I have learned is that whether it is writing, or exercising for me it has to be "The Write Fit." If I strive to better myself, and put into place the process and skills I need to accomplish these activities I will become more successful. Practicing the skills I have learned and applying them to writing helps me to be more productive and (hopefully) more competent. With exercise using the skills I have learned helps me maintain my weight and become a more healthy active person.
