Moon Tiger - Denise Levertov

The Moon tiger

in the room here

it came in, it is

prowling sleekly

under and over

the twin beds

See its small head

silver smooth,

hear the pad of its

large feet. Look,

its white stripes

in the light that slid

through the jalousies

It is sniffing our

clothes, its cold nose

nudges our bodies.

THe beds are narrow

but Im coming in with you.

The title is called moon tiger, although it may not literally mean a real tiger. I believe that the author of the poem is referring to moonlight. This poem really paints a picture in the mind, when the author uses the words/phrases small head, silver smooth, large feet, white stripes, cold nose nudges. The author uses those words to paint the picture of a silver tiger, pawing around a room. What the author is trying to get through to the readers, is the way moonlight shines into a bedroom at night, and how it seems to sneak in like a tiger, quietly.

If we must die - Claude McKay

If we must die, let it not be like hogs

Hunted and penned in an inglorious spot,

While round us bark the mad and hungry dogs,

Making their mock at our accursed lot.

If we must die, O let us nobly die,

So that our precious blood may not be shed

In vain; then even the monsters we defy

Shall be constrained to honor us though dead!

O kinsmen we must meet the common foe!

Though far outnumbered let us show us brave,

And for their thousand blows deal one deathblow!

What though before us lies the open grave?

Like men well face the murderous, cowardly pack,

Pressed to the wall, dying, but fighting back!

If we must die was written to tell people to fight back. The title lets you know that there is going to be a catch to it. IF we must die, that is saying, that if we are going to die, THIS is what should happen, this is what is going to happen. In the first line, you see If we must die, let it not be like hogs, this is comparing human death to animal slaughter. McKay is trying to show that if one must die, they should die noble, and that they WILL die noble. Though far out numbered let us show us brave, this shows that even though they are outnumbered, they are not going to back down. This poem is basically saying, if you have to die, dont just die, fight back first. You see this in the example in the last two lines, Like men well face the murderous, cowardly pack, Pressed to the wall, dying, but fighting back! I think that the tone in this is inspirational, because he is trying to inspire people to stand up for yourself.

Alone - Maya Angelou

Lying, thinking

Last night

How to find my soul a home

Where water is not thirsty

And bread loaf is not stone

I came up with one thing

And I dont believe Im wrong

That nobody,

But nobody

Can make it out here alone.

Alone, all alone

Nobody, but nobody

Can make it out here alone.

There are some millionaires

With money they cant use

Their wives run round like banshees

Their children sing the blues

Theyve got expensive doctors

To cure their hearts of stone.

But nobody

No, nobody

Can make it out here alone.

Alone, all alone

Nobody, but nobody

Can make it out here alone.

Now if you listen closely

Ill tell you what I know

Storm clouds are gathering

The wind is gonna blow

The race of man is suffering

And I can hear the moan,

Cause nobody,

But nobody

Can make it out here alone.

Alone, all alone

Nobody, but nobody

Can make it out here alone.

In the title, you can definently tell that this poem is going to have a more depressing tone, but yet somewhat calm sense to it. In the first stanza, we learn that she wants a home for her soul, which I believe means, that she wants some place to be where she doesnt have to think or worry about problems. She sees people wasting their lives on things that dont matter, and she comes to the point that you cant be successful with your life

Conflict is present in every office and home environment. In some cases, it is minimal and causes low doses of stress. In other cases, it may cause some individuals physical ailments. Understanding the nature of conflict, and how to deal with it properly, could serve to improve those relationships that are affected by it.What is Conflict?First, a definition of conflict is in order. Stephen Robbins, in the University of Phoenix textbook on Organizational Behavior (Organizational Behavior, Ninth Edition, 001), defines conflict as "a process in which an effort is purposely made by A to offset the efforts of B by some form of blocking that will result in frustrating B in attaining his or her goals or furthering his or her interest."Theorists have identified three basic types of conflicttraditional, human relations, and interactionist. These three types of conflict have evolved over time.

Help with essay on Conflict Resolution

The traditional view of conflict saw conflict in a negative light. The traditional view felt that conflict was a result of a malfunction as was to be avoided. Conflict is a word commonly used in the military when referring to a battle or a war. Conflict in this context stimulates competition and the notion of a win/lose outcome. This type of view results in negative reactions and stifles innovation and change. As defined by the University of Bradfords website dedicated to conflict resolution (http//www.brad.ac.uk/acad/confres/dislearn/unit1.html), this type of conflict can be broken down into two additional categories--armed conflict and violent conflict or deadly conflict. The human relations view argues that conflict is inevitable. Thus, conflict should be accepted. It has also been viewed as a stimulus for group improvement. With this in mind, conflict was no longer considered an enemy, but more like a stray cat that would not leave but instead became a family conversation piece. The interactionist view sees conflict as a more positive member of the group. The interactionist view welcomes conflict. Here, the stray cat has become an accepted member of the family and has gained a name and a meal or two. Conflict is seen as a means to keep the group lively and less boring. It can be seen as a stimulus for innovation and positive change. The interactionist view is more likely to resolve the issue than judge the presenter of the conflict situation.Functional Versus Dysfunctional ConflictJust as the interactionist view sees conflict as a positive addition to a group and the traditional view portrays conflict as an enemy, conflict actually can be a functional part of the group dynamics or it may hinder the group's performance. According to Daniel Hunter in his article on "Conflict Transformation and Diversity Lesson from Mainstreams and Margins" (http//www.cs.earlham.edu), "the two characters which make up the single word ‘conflict' when written in Chinese danger and opportunity. Conflict has the danger of violence and destructiveness. At the same time, conflict is opportunity. It offers an opportunity for growth within the relationship of the participants that would otherwise not be present." The ConflictThe example business model is based on a cost-recovery system. Each business unit is given a yearly budget to acquire goods and services necessary to fulfill their needs. Each of the service organizations within the company must bill the business units to be able to pay back the expenses incurred during the year. Billing is processed on a monthly basis and the information gathered is examined for efficiencies and for how well the group recovers their costs.

One conflict that has arisen, in respect to the monthly billing, pertains to the supervisor's request that billing time must be reported at the end of each day. Any employee that does not maintain this strict standard is subjected to questions and comments from the supervisor during the weekly staff meetings. The staff meetings are often centered around how well or how poorly the group has performed in regards to their billing each week. Names may be called aloud and hourly totals recited in from of the group. All time must be reported, regardless if it is billable or not.

The group has been told that the "embarrassment tactic" is being used to force individuals to stay current on their reports. This tactic has reduced morale and causes some employees to arrive conveniently late for meetings to avoid the ridicule.

During slower work periods, non-billable time must be reported in one of several waystraining, archiving, or administrative duties. The administrative category has come under a greater amount of scrutiny lately due to increased use. In the past, the employees would not report un-billable time at all. The administrative category is the only category open to report down time.

Due to the increased use of the category, details are being requested in the comments section of the system to explain the increased usages.

The employees have becoming increasingly frustrated and have openly questioned the ritual during several staff meetings. The answers have been less than adequate for some of the employees who have seen the scrutiny as a lack of trust and the insinuation that the designers do not know how to perform their daily duties. Due to the increased questioning from the employees, the supervisor has been forced to explain in detail the needs of upper management and why they desire a more frequent report. While this has helped the situation, it has not completely solved the dilemma. Explaining the needs to a group has not been easy for the supervisor. The information is foreign to the employees because they do not fully understand how such numbers are used.

This predicament has caused the supervisor to examine the requests to find a way to explain the needs to the employees. Periodically, management asks for additional data. This causes stress within the department because the notion of cutbacks is raised and additional questions are presented to the supervisor during the staff meetings. Greater effort is needed on both sides of the table to ease the tension.Individuals do not have to give up assertiveness to arrive at a mutually agreeable solution. Cooperativeness does not mean that an individual must forsake his or her competitive drive to reach a personally fulfilling solution. When parties are given the freedom to arrive at a mutually satisfying solution, both parties win and they are both more susceptible to adhere to the tenants agreed upon in the solution. This can not be done with some degree of cooperative and open communication. The dialogue must be thorough and nonthreatening. Would you agree that the creation of Israel in May 148 has been the most important event in shaping the present situation in the Arab Israeli conflict?

One cause of the current conflict between the Arabs and the Israelis is the creation of Israel in 148. There are lots of other important factors, which have contributed to this major area of dispute and hostility between the Arabs and Israelis; a dispute is still far from conciliation.

In 147 the UN discussed the future of Palestine and a decision was attained to separate the land into two states Jewish and Arab. The Jewish leader agreed with this idea but the Arabs rejected it as there were less Jews than Arabs and yet the Jews were to be given more land. Even though both sides didn't agree to the creation of Israel it went ahead. Despite having done nothing wrong, the partition left the Arabs feeling punished. They were determined that they would regain the land wrongfully taken from them. Since that day the Arabs and Jews have fought over whom the land rightfully belongs to. Source 1 shows what the creation of Israel has caused to occur in today's society. Israeli soldiers treat the body of the Palestinian man they had just murdered as a trophy. That is one example of the horrendous atrocities the creation of Israel is causing at the present.

Another cause of the conflict in the Middle East today is that both sides have strong claims to the land. The Jews believe the land belongs to them for mainly religious reasons. The Old Testament preaches that Palestine is the Jewish ‘promised land'. Their whole history revolves around Palestine and many of their religious buildings, such as The Temple Of Solomon in Jerusalem, are there. Even though, after a revolt in 15 AD, they had no homeland they still kept their pride as Jews and aimed to return to Palestine one day. Zionism increased this desire in the 1th century.

Buy cheap The creation of Israel term paper

The Muslims also believe Palestine is their homeland because their religion tells them that they are descended from Abraham's son Ismael. Additionally, the Mosque of Omar and many other important mosques are found in Jerusalem. The Arabs felt their homeland had been taken from them without any justification. Source shows what devastation is being caused by two different groups of people who have opposite, enthusiastic views and strong feelings on the predicament they face.

One of the most catastrophic and inexplicable controversy to come out of dividing the Arabs and Israelis is the Palestinian refugees. Over one and a half million live in exile, most in refugee camps. The numbers in the camps have grown due to the continual Arab exodus from Israel. The Arabs and Israelis argue about who was responsible for making the Arabs leave and what has happened to the refugees. What is undeniable though is the impact this has on the current situation. The Arabs believe that Israel caused the problem by forcing the Arabs out, whereas the Israelis are convinced it is entirely the Arabs fault and that they chose to leave. Refugees are still there today. The Arabs want to go back to their homeland, which is the only place they want to be and that is why they have stayed in refugee camps. The Jews don't want them back. Their opinion is it isnt their responsibility, it is the other Arab countries fault they remain refugee camps. The Arab refugees have nothing. Therefore they have nothing to lose and are prepared to dies for their country.

The Arabs that remained in Israel claim that ever since Israel has been created the Jews have treated them immorally making their lives unbearable. The Jews consider the Arabs to be backward people who are unworthy of any equality or justice of any kind. The Jews have used mass extermination to try to wipe out Arab culture. The Arabs are forced to learn Hebrew. They receive racial discrimination.

For example, Hero and Claudio's almost robotic relationship is acknowledged as a ‘Courtly love' relationship the relationship is modelled on the feudal relationship between a knight and his liege lord. The knight serves his courtly lady with the same obedience and loyalty that he owes to his liege lord. She is in complete control of the love relationship, while he owes her obedience and submission. The knights love for the lady inspires him to do great deeds, in order to be worthy of her love or to win her favour. The ‘courtly love' relationship typically was not between husband and wife, not because the poets and the audience were inherently immoral, but because it was an idealized sort of relationship that could not exist within the context of real life medieval marriages, and so it appears apt that for the vast majority of the plot Claudio and Hero remain unmarried. In the middle ages, marriages amongst the nobility were typically based on practical and dynastic concerns rather than on love. The idea that a marriage could be based on love was a radical notion. But the audience for romance was perfectly aware that these romances were simply romance, not models for actual behaviour.

Cheap University Papers on Character Analysis: Essay.

The courtly love relationship is, however, the basis for Claudio and Hero's relationship in the play. As explained above, this was commonplace in medieval plays. However, Shakespeare adds his own dimension to the plot in the form of Beatrice and Benedick's relationship (Beatrice, by the way, is in Italy the traditional name for the women in plays who exert much more power and authority than other women). To try and illustrate the huge margin of difference between the two pairs of lovers' relationships, I have collected a series of incidents between Beatrice and Benedick as examples. In act 1, Leonato explains the relationship between Beatrice and Benedick to the messenger. It is a camaraderie of wit and exchange of insults that is more commonly seen in the modern battle of the sexes. They repeatedly put one another down because of each others sex, and make clear the advantages and disadvantages they each possess because of it. This relationship prevails throughout the play. Beatrice exclaims that she plans to be a bachelor for all time, as does Benedick. She cannot stand to hear a man declare his love for her. Beatrices independent nature is unique to Shakespeares work. Benedick, however, puts women down for their frivolity and mistrust. He is grateful for his mother, but plans to have no other women in his life. Beatrice, by putting down men, illustrates how she believes women to be the better sex. Like Beatrice, Benedick, by insulting women, is proclaiming the male gender supreme.Similarly, in act , Beatrice entertains her family, once again, with humorous tales of men and their problems. She does understand, however, that many women are not as happy as she is to be a bachelor. Therefore, she tries to convince her cousin, Hero, to select a good man, if she must select a man. This again shows Beatrice's assertiveness and Hero's willing to be told what to do. For Beatrice, her strength and femininity are unique and she does not try to force others to practice the same lifestyle. Elsewhere, in soliloquy, Benedick gives an enormous list of the requirements that his intended woman must possess. He realizes that women cannot possibly contain all such qualities and therefore he must remain a bachelor. Benedick overhears Don Pedro, Claudio, and Leonatos plotted conversation about Beatrice. It seems that part of the battle of the sexes may cease to exist as Benedick falls hopelessly in love with Beatrice. However, he believes her to be in love with him, and this significant element in the plot allows him to fall for her. This, contrary to Hero and Claudio's almost instantaneous ‘love at first sight', is a progressive and endearing love whereupon they learn to love one another gradually.Hero, Ursula, and Margaret ‘force' Beatrice to fall in love with Benedick by telling tales ‘behind her back' of the glorious Italian man, Benedick. They use traps in order to establish this love affair between these two soldiers in the battle of the sexes. Irony is used in this in that they are both told that they must not know, and yet both do. Beatrice has fallen for Benedick during the conversation, but still will not reveal her feelings.Beatrice and Benedick proclaim their love for one another after evading the issue. They have trouble showing their feelings, for fear of being shown up by the other. Benedick is the first to declare his love and Beatrice soon follows. However, soon after they express their feelings, their battle of wit returns. Beatrice asks Benedick to kill Claudio and their friendly battle turns into something more than just a battle of words and wit. Blank verse is oft used for dramatic effect in these sequences.Beatrice and Benedick meet again in Leonatos orchard. Benedick is still love-struck, but Beatrice begins the conversation with her insulting wit. She never ceases to battle Benedick in tongue. Their conversations are always about the differences between the sexes. So, although the two proclaimed bachelors are in love, they still insult one another through this verbal battalion. Eventually, Benedick swallows his pride and asks which masked woman is Beatrice. He does not admit that he loves her. Instead he declares that she loves him. Beatrice will not allow such humiliation, so she declares that he loves her and that she does not love him. They argue until Hero and Claudio steal their letters that confirm the love Beatrice and Benedick share. Until the end, neither Beatrice nor Benedick will admit to ‘defeat' in love, ‘I was about to protest I loved you' Line , p 46. The play concludes as Benedick welcomes marriage and love. He is happy and fulfilled and advises the prince (C) to marry also. The battle of the sexes has come to a blissful conclusion. It becomes easy to see that B & Bs' relationship is a slow, gradual conclusion, whereas C & H's relationship is fairly spontaneous, and relies on honour, especially in Claudio's case, rather than love. In fact, the thought of one man ‘wooing' on behalf of another appears totally false. Indeed, the only point in which the relationship seems uncertain is when Claudio's ego appears to have suffered a blow when Hero is ‘unfaithful', removing her honour. The situation is quickly recovered when Claudio discovers it was an elaborate trick, Don John, the Bastard, being the culprit. Again, the two couples' personalities are as wildly contrasting as the type of relationships they endure B & B's personalities are very individual, yet also very similar. C & H's personas, however, are almost non-existent by comparison; there is no ‘wooing' done by either party outright, and marriage just seems as to be a mutual agreement rather than a declaration of their love. In my opinion, Beatrice and Benedick's relationship would have been more common today than in those days, but I would not label all medieval relationships as Courtly love. Indeed, it appears that love is presented in two different senses one, in a peripheral but necessary way, simply to conform; the other, a strong tie built up throughout the years with utmost passion and equality.

Phantom of the Opera

For my paper topic I chose to attend a showing of the classic Broadway show, The Phantom of the Opera. The show opens up at an auction of opera memorabilia at the Paris Opera House. An old man by the name of Raoul bids for a strange musical box which appears to hold some special memory. After the remains of a chandelier are revealed the play leaps to the past when Raoul was in his prime.

A new opera is in rehearsal, and the manager of the opera announces his retirement after the show. While he is introducing the new manager a backdrop from the stage falls, and nearly takes out the leading lady. The people who are involved with the play believe that the falling backdrop was not an accident, and was the work of "The Ghost." The leading lady storms off the stage leaving the production with out a star. Madame Giry, the ballet mistress, hands the managers a note from the opera ghost demanding a salary and a free box at the opera. Meg, Madame Giry's daughter, suggests that her friend Christine Daae could take the role of leading lady. Christine has been taking singing lessons but refuses to say from whom.

Write my Essay on Phantom of the Opera

Later in the story the audience finds out that the person who has been giving Christine her lessons is in deed the man who has been haunting the opera house. In the story Christine ends up with Raoul, which angers the phantom greatly. After the phantom kills a couple people a mob of angry people come after the phantom, who has managed to take Christine hostage. In the end the phantom lets Christine go and disappears.

Overall I enjoyed the opera very much. I felt like the scenery was great, and the singing was incredible. It amazed me to hear songs that were sung with that much skill live. I had heard it before on c.d.'s and on television but there is nothing like hearing it in person. The costumes were elaborate and beautiful and definitely left the impression of a high dollar production.

I have drill team practice right after school, then I have choir rehearsals then I have to work the basketball game for student council. I am one of the busiest teens I have ever known. I am involved in so many after-school activities that I lose my time to relax and to have time to myself. I have always wondered what I would be doing if I did not belong to any after-school actions. Would I be a "book worm" meaning I would have better grades and a higher GPA or would I be more of a "problem child" meaning I would be out all the time and involved in activities that could be very bad for me. I know many teens that have had a taste of both worlds. Some come from being very busy to not doing anything at all which causes them to get in trouble and I know others who have been "problem children" but as soon as they join a after-school activity they become very involved in and around there community which keeps them out of trouble. The question has been asked, Are children more successful when they are in after-school activities or are they better off not being in one. I believe that the answer to this question lies in the teen, the upbringing of the teen and the activities around the teen.

I truly believe the statement that says, "Anything you put your mind to, you can do it." I have been a witness to many people who have motivated themselves so much that they have accomplished goals that other people can only dream of. Some of my high school friends do not participate in anything at school. In fact, all they do at school is answer questions and make excellent grades on test they take. They do not participate in any of the school's clubs, organizations or sports activities. They only strive to be in the top ten percent of the class. To me this proves that a child with enough motivation can do anything by his self and be very successful in his life. The teen did not need extra support from any type of after-school activity. Unfortunately, that is not true for every teen. Some teens need reassurance from other people and organizations. Their motivation comes from others and from them accomplishing a group goal. For example, on the website, www.ascd.org, they say that teens who participate in after school activities gain a lot of self motivation and confidence. They also say that they learn how to control and deal with peer pressure. Those teens that do not participate have contact with the wrong type of people and peer pressure causing them to do things that kids who are involved would not participate. For instance, a child who participates in school activities has too many activities and friends to think about doing drugs or participating in harmful events. For the most part, I believe that the website is correct when it says that kids who participate are better students. The only idea that I disagree with is that the website says that teens who don't participate are going to participate in bad activities. That is not true; I have known kids who have done so much with their life, without participating in school activities.

As a child, I learned how to be active in the community. My parents always had me involved in some kind of activity that made me interact with other people in positive ways. I saw how important after-school activities are from my parents. Both of my parents were and still are very active in the school and in the community. My parents have always participated in events that made them better people. They really instilled in me the value of being active. I used to wonder why I had to be so involved in everything at school. My mother told me that being active kept her out of trouble. She said that she became a better person and her confidence shot up. She was proud of herself and the goals she accomplished while working with the drill team and the student council. My mother was not a very popular girl until she started getting involved. I believe that the desire for a teen to become involved in activities starts growing at home. I know I loved to hear stories from my mother and father about there days on the drill team and the football team. When my mother told me stories about the drill team, I became very interested in learning about drill team and also becoming a member. There examples have helped me decide who I want to be and how I want to be perceived by the people around me.

When I interviewed my mother, the school board president, I asked more statistical questions. One question I asked her was about the difference between teens who are active in school and those that aren't. She told me that the teens who did participate in some kind of club or organization have better grades, good personalities and have higher chances of graduating from high school and college. The teens that did not participate had mediocre or low grades and they did not have a lot of confidence or people skills. She gave me many examples from her life and from her friends that were involved and those that weren't, some became successful doctors while others are still struggling to have better lives.

I truly believe that a child learns from what they are exposed to all the time. Many teens are influenced by television, radio, and there friends. I know from personal experience that when a teen gets involved in something, it is because of a dream that was seen on a T.V. show or it is a friend who has thought of a "good" idea. For instance, when I was in the eighth grade, one of my friends from the band dared me to try out for the Junior Varsity Drill team. At first I was not going to try out, I thought that I was not athletic enough or that I was not a good dancer, but as tryouts came closer my family and friends started to encourage and help me reach my goal. When the day of tryouts came, all of my family and friends were there to support me which made me feel really good. I felt excellent after I found out that I had made the team. I also found out that all of my friends don't have to do the same thing as me. I realized that we all have different talents and that different organizations will use them to become better. I also noticed that even though we will be in different activities, each activity intertwined with each other. For example, my friends in the band played the music, and I danced to that music while all of us were supporting our friends on the football team. The way we split up was really cool, because we got to see each others talents and show all the work we have done. Many teens learn that they don't need their friends everywhere they go. They will start understanding how good it is to be independent and how fun it is to see everyone else doing their own thing.

Overall, teens who participate have a better chance in the world to achieve all their goals. It has been proven that school activities provide teens with self pride, motivation and something to do, instead of sitting at the house or out in the streets. I firmly believe that a teen can accomplish anything with the right inspiration and the right type of help to achieve anything. WORKS CITEDInternet sourcewww.ascd.gov/programs/melton
