When investigating the three sectors of the American economy one is able to see that the consumer, business owner, and government aspects of the economy all differ very heavily. Each position plays a different role in the functioning economy and with the loss of one certain position, there would be no functioning economy. While conducting an interview with three local representatives of the three sectors of the economy one is able to see how each party thrives off the other.

As a consumer, there are many factors that determine how useful that consumer will be to the economy. If the consumer is a member of the working class, business will benefit by obtaining that hard working citizen that will drive their business further, and the government will thrive in the income taxes paid by the working consumer and business. If the consumer is not of the working class and is in need of government assistance, the government compensates for the money lost in helping those unable to provide the necessary means of survival in taxing consumers and businesses. One thing the consumer, business owner, and government official all have in common is the agreed factor of the United States economy losing world power to East Asian nations such as China and Japan. All three interviewees expressed concern for the industrial production substandard and NAFTA hurting the American economy. One may find it interesting to see three different viewpoints on education in America. The consumer of the working class and the government official seemed to believe that education was the most crucial part of our nation's future while the business owner thought is wasn't as important as opening up the job market or lowering taxes. All three interviewees agreed that the nation's defense system was also a crucial part in preserving our economy. A surprising finding was the government officials reaction to government assisted programming. Concerns were expressed for the abuse of the program and not enough regulation of assistance especially in New York State. New York provides 6 various welfare programs, all of which require different standards to obtain assistance, while most states offer only 1 programs. Therefore, it is extremely easy for someone truly unqualified for welfare to obtain some sort of public assistance in New York State. This leads to severe abuse of the system, which increases taxes for the consumer and business owner. It has even been found that many people who do not qualify for public assistance in a state outside of New York will move into New York State so they are able to receive help from the government. All three interviewees agreed that the American economy would be in deficit the next fiscal year due to the Bush Administration's tax increase and the current Iraqi conflict. Many of the important issues facing each the consumer, business owner, and government official was somewhat similar. Lowering taxes, creating jobs, and education were the most popular tasks for the American economy to attempt.

It is very obvious the vital need for all three sectors of the American economy. Without one branch, the other two would have a much more difficult time in functioning properly. After conducting the interviews, one is able to learn how opinions are formed on certain economic programs just through one's station in life, their experience in the working field, and personal beliefs. One may find it typical that the business owner found education to be less crucial than opening up the job market because that is his or her best means of economic surplus. Speaking with true representative personalities of the American economy is truly eye opening. There is not better way to experience first handedly how necessary and crucial it is for the consumer, business owner, and government official to work together for the economy to run smoothly.

Order your Government Control - 1984 and Brave New World - Comparative paper at affordable prices with ! Humans can be manipulated in any way in order to make them behave in a certain manner that suits the needs of others. Comparing George Orwell's 184 and Aldous Huxley's Brave New World it becomes clear that the populous can be manipulated and intimidated into supporting the leader of the government. Fear is a very powerful technique that allows the government to control what a person believes and can cause a person to support something they might not otherwise support. Through the use of technology the government can control its citizens and ensure that they conform with the rest of society. Since technology is such a large part of there society…. . Ignorance is a very important factor in deciding where ones loyality lies. If a populous is ignorant of their surroundings, as in 184 and Brave New World then it will be less trouble to convince the person to gladly support the leader. In order to maintain stability in a totalitarian society, the government forces the populous to support the leader.

Big Brother (the leader of Oceania) and by Mustafa Mond (controller of the World State) use fear as an effective way to gain the support of the populous. In 184, members of society fear Big Brother as a result of reports put out by the Party.

"People simply disappeared, always during the night. Your name was removed from the registers, every record of everything you had ever done was wiped out, your one-time existence was denied and then forgotten. You were abolished, annihilated vaporized was the usual word." (Orwell, 1).

This fear of being taken away by the thought-police and, the fear of death keeps individuals from having unorthodox beliefs and from committing thought-crime, which results in stability throughout the society and support towards the Party and Big Brother. Mustafa Mond also exerts the same kind of fear in Brave New World. The populous of Oceania has fear that the Mond would exile them for doing something not of the status quo, which is true. When Bernard hears that he will be exiled he pleads for mercy and begs for forgiveness. "'Send me to an Island?'…'You can't send me.'…'Oh, please don't send me to Iceland. I promise I'll do what I ought to do. Give me another chance. Please give me another chance.' The tears began to flow…" (Huxley, 06). This punishment is given to those who don't fit in to the society. The lower-castes of society support the Mond, because that is what there conditioning tells them to do. They will always fit into the society since they don't know anything else. These similarities between 184 and Brave New World show that when a leader influences the populous with fear a stable society and support of the populous is the result .

Technological advances have allowed the leaders of totalitarian societies to ensure that they have the support of the populace and to maintain a stable society. In 184, The Party harnesses the use of technology to brainwash and monitor its citizens behaviour. Doublethink, a very effective method of brainwashing, is utilized to allow the government to make the populous believe carefully constructed lies told by Big Brother even when they have the contradicting truth in their mind. Since the populous is forced to believe anything that Big Brother tells them, he has their full support and stability in the society is maintained. Rehabilitation is used when a member of society commits thought crime against the Party. Winston Smith, the protagonist, does not support Big Brother at first. Eventually his unorthodox actions are caught. He is rehabilitated and is forced to support Big Brother. Brave New World uses technology differently than in 184 to gain support of the populace. In Brave New World, hypnopaedia, or sleep teaching allows controllers to condition infants so that know they have to support their leader. "[Hypnopaedia]. "The greatest moralizing and socializing force of all time." (Huxley, 4). Since sleep teaching allows infants to be conditioned to support their leader, the World State doesn't have to worry as much about rebellious behaviour. This method of forcing the populous to support the leader is very hard to undo making the society of the World State very stable. However, knowledge still must be decreased in the populous in order for stability to exist.

In both societies, the populous is shielded from a significant amount of knowledge and truth making them increasingly ignorant. The extremity of an individual's ignorance is based on their ranking position in the society. For example, an inner party member would be permitted to read any type of literature and gain additional knowledge to the past or other areas, whereas an outer-party member would only be permitted to read certain types of literature that have been rewritten in Newspeak to give no insight into anything accept present day Oceania. Newspeak is a new language developed to eradicate unorthodox thoughts by eliminating certain words. Therefore, without being able to express the action of rebellion the populace does not know any better then to support Big Brother. All historical documents and records are rewritten to exclude references to historical events or anything else that could spark an individual to have eccentric feelings towards the Party. The original documents are then destroyed and no record exists.

"And if all others accepted the lie which the party imposed if all records told the same tale then the lie passed into history and became truth. ‘Who controls the past', ran the party slogan, ‘controls the future who controls the present controls the past. And yet the past, though of it's nature alterable, never had been altered.' (Orwell, 7).

The parties ability to alter the past allows for corrections in Big Brothers speeches that would otherwise be inaccurate. Stability is maintained in that Big Brother is always right and therefore is supported by the populace. Knowledge is distributed similarly in the World State as it is in the Party. In Brave New World, a greater amount of knowledge is given to the higher Alpha and Beta castes. The lower Delta, Gamma, and Epsilon castes become increasingly more ignorant with the Epsilons completely striped of there individuality. The lower castes have no reason not support the World Controller, Mond, since all they are capable of is working and socializing. However, the higher castes have some of there individuality intact which allows them to make decisions on there own. "A society of Alphas couldn't fail to be unstable and miserable. Imagine a factory staffed by Alphas - that is to say by separate and unrelated individuals of good heredity and conditioned so as to be capable (within limits) of making a free choice and assuming responsibilities." (Huxley, 0). This proves that higher caste individuals and lower caste individual must both be present in society in order to maintain stability.

If there were no measures in place to force the populous into supporting the leader many individuals in the society would rebel. The totalitarian society would fall apart since the rulers would not be able to control their citizens. Measures such as supplying ignorance to individuals, technologic involvement, and fear are all used together to maintain a stable society were the populous supports the leader. If the society in which we live didn't have methods to gain our support towards the leader then our society would not function and stability would be lost. Therefore nobody would live happlily.

EssayComparison of Book and Movie One Flew Over the Cuckoos NestOne Flew over the Cuckoos Nest is a book written by Ken Kesey to accomplish a certain mood within its chapters. The feelings and moods given in the book differ greatly from those in the movie because of multiple changes in character development. Each and every time a movie is produced from a book, the producers are forced to change parts of the story in order to suit the audiences needs for a faster paced plot. It is impossible to capture every mood or setting which the author creates. What is lost can sometimes be the real meaning behind the story. The characterization of chief Bromden is a good example of the changes made from book to movie. His past is a vital piece of information contributing to the mood and understanding of the story. In the movie, Bromden is nothing more than a crazy Indian who doesnt want to talk so pretends to be deaf and dumb. Much of the understanding and respect is lost in the transition between book and movie. In the book, Bromden has flashbacks to his childhood, lighting on significant points in his childhood. His background is never even brushed upon in the movie. Of course it would have been nearly impossible to tell of Bromdens life in a movie, much less show the world from his point of view as in the book. Bromden is still a very interesting character but the real puzzle to his problems is lost.

Alistair MacLeod's "To Every Thing There Is a Season" is an exemplary illustration of an initiation or coming of age story. MacLeod effectively portrays the confusing feelings that accompany the narrator's sudden and abrupt transition from the magical world of being a child into the harsher reality of adulthood. MacLeod uses an extraordinary amount of symbols and imagery to depict this.

The story begins with an introduction to an eleven-year-old boy, caught between being a child and becoming an adult. His childlike innocence is fading. MacLeod uses the symbol of snowflakes to illustrate the pureness of the child. "The large flakes were soft and new then and almost generous, and the earth to which they fell was still warm . . . they disappeared at the moment of contact" (MacLeod, 0-10). "When we turned to leave, it fell upon our footprints, and as the night wore on obliterated them and all the records of our movements" (MacLeod, 10). The disappearance of the snowflakes and footprints represents the fading of his innocence. Just as the snowflakes disappeared, his innocence is also disappearing as he moves closer to becoming an adult. MacLeod also uses the image of the children trick-or-treating to depict the innocence within the boy. "We carried out pillowcases from house to house, knocking on doors to become silhouettes in the light thrown out from kitchens (white pillowcases held out by whitened forms)" (MacLeod, 10). The "white pillowcases" and "whitened forms" represent the child's innocence.

A major symbol of the narrator's childhood, is Santa Claus and the narrator's belief in him. "I am troubled myself about the nature of Santa Claus and I am trying to hang on to him in any way that I can. It is true that at my age I no longer really believe in him, yet I have hoped in all his possibilities as fiercely as I can . . . " (MacLeod, 10). The narrator is struggling with his belief in Santa Claus. He wants to believe in him still, but at his age, he feels that he shouldn't. ". . . I seek sanctuary and reinforcement even in an ignorance I know I dare not trust" (MacLeod, 11). His belief in Santa Claus helps him face the hardships in life, like his father's illness and his brother being so far away. His father tells him to "hang on to the good things in our lives as long as we are able." (MacLeod, 11). So he hangs onto his belief of Santa.

The image of the ocean beginning to freeze over represents the commencing of the boy's transition into becoming an adult. "The ocean is flat and calm and along the coast, in the scooped-out coves, has turned to an icy slush" (MacLeod, 1). The water has not yet completely frozenly, symbolizing that he is not yet left his childhood completely behind him. "The clothes my mother hangs on the line are frozen almost instantly . . ." (MacLeod, 1). This again illustrates the boy's transition from a child (the wet clothes) to an adult (the frozen clothes).

When the narrator's older brother comes home for Christmas, the boy hopes that he can be a child again, and that his brother ". . . will be happy and strong and confident for us all" (MacLeod, 14). Unknown to him, his time as a child is now limited, as he will soon find out the truth about Santa Claus (the one thing that still holds him in the world of a child) and enter the world of an adult. "The boxes are filled with gifts neatly wrapped and bearing tags. The ones for my younger brothers say "from Santa Claus" but mine are not among them any more, as I know with certainty they will never be again" (MacLeod, 17). He knows the truth about Santa Claus now and has finally completed the transition from a child to an adult.

Alistair MacLeod uses the powerful effect of imagery and symbols to exemplify the boy's transition from a child to an adult. This development in the narrator makes "To Every Thing There Is a Season" a perfect example of an initiation or coming of age story. MacLeod, Alistair. "To Every Thing There Is a Season." The purpose of this project is to explore the religion of scientology and to further understand the main aspects of the religion in better detail. The religion of scientology intrigued me because I have never known anything about it, and it sounds like it might be something that is quite interesting to learn more about. There will be many areas covered, including the founder of the religion, the different aspects of it, and facts about Scientology.

Scientology as a religion began in 154 and was based on the thoughts and teachings of L. Ron Hubbard. (Nation) He came to be respected and known with his book "Dianetics The Modern Science of Mental Health," which contains a therapy for enhancing life, as well as curing emotional and psychosomatic illnesses. (Nation) This was the basis for the beginning of the religion, along with the book "Science of Survival." That book speaks about the religion philosophy of scientology, and this is when his ideas first took on a religious angle. (Nation) Hubbard, being a genius, is someone who's writings will get recognition and be respected by some sector of the community, and that aided Scientology. (Garrison, 1)

In order to understand the Scientology in a better way, we have to get a grasp on what Dianetics is, especially since it is the forerunner and foundation upon which Scientology rests. (Garrison, 1) Dianetics is described as the basic science of human thought, and is related to the exploration into the human mind. (Garrison, 0) Hubbard began this whole Dianetics idea by looking for the a dynamic principle that would be the lowest common denominator of existence. He came up with the idea that all life is energy of some sort, and he asked what is the energy doing? (Garrison ) The answer that Hubbard drew from that question was that the dynamic principle of existence was the primary urge of all organisms, from the simplest to the most complex, to survive. In his studies, Hubbard also found that the basic nature of human beings to be sincere, intelligent, and good, the conclusion being drawn from studies of hypnosis. (Garrison, 4) This conclusion is key in uncovering one of Dianetic most valuable discoveries, that is the idea that all men are basically good and that their wrongdoing stemmed from mental aberration, which means that the ideas are straying from the normal. The idea that the mankind could be redeemed if they can stop the mental aberrations, which was the source of the problems. Further investigation into this area of study found the source of trouble lay in a previously unknown sub-mind, which, together with its own memory, underlies the conscious mind. The subliminal mind (which is different from conscious mind) is also known as the reactive mind in this theory, is the only mind that is always conscious. This mind then records what is done to the individual, not by him, during periods of unconsciousness, which can be from drugs, shock, illness or injury, and these recorded thoughts are what contains the pain or problems, which lead to the mental aberration, and then to eventual wrongdoing (Garrison, 6) Then, armed with this knowledge, one can conclude that a primary goal of Dianetics to restore the human back to its full potential and to clear the mind of all the things that essentially pull it down. Dianetic believes in going back and basically re-living these mental aberrations (not literally, in the mind) and this will cause the brain to

Write my Essay on Scientology

eventually file the memory away as non-aberrative. (Garrison, ) This is the basic idea of Dianetics, which again laid the groundwork for the Scientology religion.

Scientology is an organization or movement that is right on the boundary between psychology and religion. The idea is that if you correctly apply the knowledge that is there for the taking, which will fully release the individuals full potential. The proper application of the ideas is supposed to lead to the freeing of the individuals superhuman powerful human nature. Scientology believes that in the climb to a desirable state, there are current human limitations, including lack of confidence or competence, psychological and physical disabilities, and psychosomatic illness. These limitations, if they are eliminated (the idea of scientology), this will enable man to handle his environment more successfully. (Wallis, 4)

Scientology also looks at the human beings will to exist, which is summed up in 8 dynamics or drives as they are called. L. Ron Hubbard composed these 8 dynamics or drives, and they are as follows 1) The urge to survive as a self-aware individual; ) through his progeny; ) as a member of a family group or race; 4) through mankind as all mankind; 5) the urge toward survival through all living things, whether animal or vegetable; 6)the urge towards survival in the physical universe; 7) the urge towards survival as or of spirits; and 8)the urge towards survival as Infinity, or through a Supreme Being. (Garrison, 4,4,44) The religion of Scientology strives to teach the people to reach their maximum potential and to make the person exist and satisfy all of the dynamics.

Scientology, as you may expect, has had its people that do not agree or believe in the ideas or principles and do not consider it a religion. J. Gordon Melton did a study on the religion, and he is a reputable writer of the Encyclopedia of American Religions. He says the he finds Scientology "to be a religion in the fullest sense of the word." (Melton,) His studies show Scientology to have a strong, well thought-out doctrine, that includes belief in a Supreme Being, a belief in the freedom of the spirit, belief in the immortality of the spirit, a detailed system of worship, as well as pastoral counseling program, as well as community efforts. This is a very full plate and is a rarity among religions that are as young as this one. (Melton, 1) This is a religion and it should not be debated too much according to the facts. The worship of a supreme being, and belief in spiritual growth, and the fact that as any "religion," Scientology answers the basic religious questions of where did we come from, why are we put here, and where are we going. (Melton, ) The evidence points to this definitely being a religion and there is little debate with the facts in hand.

The religion of Scientology's major doctrinal emphasis can be hard to grasp. This can be summarized to best aid in understanding of it. The subjects or followers were trained by therapists called "auditors," and they train one to increase the power of the conscious mind and resist the influence of "engrams." Engrams are painful long lasting impressions of past experiences that essentially confuse the reactive or unconscious mind. The whole idea is to remove the engrams from the equation. Scientology also preached that humans are immortal spirits that are known as Thetans. (means life) The belief is that most humans have lost their Thetan ability, but through the practice of Scientology, they can become "operating Thetans." This means that, basically, Scientology is the practice of subduing the engrams and bringing out the potential in human beings to become "operating Thetans." (Nation, 1)

This insight into Scientology has brought me to believe that there are many different beliefs in the world, and they may look weird from the outside looking in, but that does not mean that these are not legitimate or real religions. The idea of Scientology is not like that of anything that I have heard about before, and that is why it is, in my opinion, an amazing accomplishment that it has survived and flourished. With a worldwide membership of 8 million people, it does not appear that Scientology will be dying out anytime soon , which is admirable. (Nation, 1) Scientology is unique and different, and that a big part of the reason that it is so interesting.

Please note that this sample paper on Scientology is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. There are variuos problems that many students have with the University of Memphis. One major problem that most students have with the university is the outrageous prices of books in the on-campus bookstore. I remember on August , 00, the Saturday before school started, a new incoming freshman, Renee Wills, and her parents were in the bookstore on campus complainig about the steep prices of books. People these days are crazy and money hungry. The pices of books back n my day were never this much, argued Renees mother. According to some information I gathered, the average freshman spends about three hundred and thirty dollars on books. As a persons cumulative hours increase, causing a change of classification, a required book can cost anywhere from $5 to $00.

Three major points have to be considered to find the solution of this problem the feasiblity of the solution, the increase of cost, and time efficiency. As far as the feasiblity of the solution, the problem would never get fixed if the solution is not able to be caried out. In addition, there are problems tuition hikes; therefore, cost does not need to increase. Since the cost of books is a current problem, a solution needs to be done in a timely manner.

Three possible alternatives come to mind when probing this problem. A first possible solution to the U of Ms book problem would be to include books in tuition. The students that attend the university already have to pay $1850 if they live in state and $54 if they are out-of-state residents; why not include the books in tuition? If books were included in tuition, people would not have to work extra hours that could be used for studying. In addition, the solution would not be done in a timely manner because it would take time to gather every students information about the costs of his or her books. The solution is feasible, but it would raise the cost of tuition.
