In many ways, Faust reflects the ideals of a Renaissance Man. He tried to become the perfect Renaissance Man by learning all the fields or subjects taught at that time. He had also gained the highest level of learning possible. For example, in the text it says, "I've studied now Philosophy and Jurisprudence, Medicine, and even, alas! Theology." Faust started as a Renaissance man but realized that it wasn't enough for him. He was not satisfied because he wanted to see what held the world together. He had the knowledge but couldn't use it to help the world and he couldn't find some greater power, purpose or meaning. Lastly, the lasting value that he learned amounted to nothing. In the text, there is much evidence that items such as papers, books, glasses, and instruments hadn't been used in a while. "…all this heap of books, their gnawing worms, amid their dust… smoke-stained papers midst them thrust, boxes and glasses round me crammed, and instruments in cases hurled…" Scientific thinking didn't mean anything to him anymore because he couldn't find the ultimate meaning of life or perfect humanity. In conclusion, Faust reflects the ideals of a Renaissance Man in many ways.

Faust portrays and represents the ideals of Romanticism throughout the text as well. Romanticism emphasizes imagination over reason, rules, or facts. First, he tried to see if people could be perfected. He writes, "I do not imagine I could teach what might convert and improve humanity." He might have been asking himself, "What good is knowledge if I can't improve humanity?" Secondly, Faust tries to seek or find the meaning of life. It says in the text, "Perchance full many a secret I may reach, so that no more with bitter sweat I need to talk of what I don't know yet, so that I may perceive whatever holds the world together in its inmost folds. See all its seeds, its working power and cease word-threshing from this hour." If you can't perceive what the world holds, he wants to understand what mystical thing holds the world together. Finally, Faust wants to gain experience. He says, "Instead of Nature's living sphere in which God made mankind, you have alone, in smoke and mould around you here, beasts' skeletons and dead men's bone." This represents stopping him from experiencing nature's living sphere. As one can see, Faust seeks answers for questions such as the meaning of life, in proving humanity, and gaining life's experience which many minds before and since have tried to answer.

Faust is a great writer, but I personally did not enjoy reading it. First of all, I don't like interpretive literature and, second, I did not think that many of his beliefs were logical. For example, he gained the highest level of learning possible. I believe that learning is infinite and that no one can learn enough. Also, man can be perfected. I don't think that anyone can be perfected; the only perfect one is God. Although, I did not agree with some of Faust's ideas, I do agree that he is a very talented writer, and he portrayed the Renaissance Man and Romanticism very well.
