Sophocles was born in 46 B.C. at Colonus, near Athens. He grew up in a wealthy family and had a happy childhood, unlike some of the characters he wrote about in his plays. Sophocles received a good education, and later became an Athenian general and chief treasurer of the city, as well as a talented playwright. When Sophocles was 8, he was recognized when he won in an annual dramatic competition. Then he wrote 4 winning plays in the next six decades. Overall he produced 1 plays, although there are only seven left today. These are Ajax, Antigone, Electra, Oedipus & Colonus, Oedipus Rex, Philocteles, and Trachinian Women. Sophocles plays were influenced by the era he lived in and the people of Athens.

II. Authors Unique Style

Sophocles advanced many of the techniques used in play writing. He set the chorus, a group of people that represent the public citizens, at 15 people. The chorus suggests how much time has passed, by using poetic interludes. It also helps set the mood and tell what is happening in the play. For example, in the First Ode the chorus says, Welcome, light of the Sun, the fairest Sun that has ever dawned upon Thebes, the city of seven gates! That lets the reader know what time it is and where the play takes place. The chorus leader is the voice of reason and his words usually follow along with those of Tiresias, the blind soothsayer. After Tiresias leaves the palace, Creon asks the chorus for advice. Tiresias had said that Creon would not live, unless he did something about Antigone. The chorus leader suggests that Creon release her from where she lies in the cave. Sophocles used the chorus to assist Creon in his decisions.

Point of view is another technique Sophocles likes to vary from the different characters in his plays. Antigone and Creon are the two major conflicting characters. They each act on their own thoughts, and Sophocles writes the play based on both of their views. Neither Antigone nor Creon will budge in their beliefs. Because Polynices rebelled against Thebes and died, Creon thinks that he should be left outside to perish. Antigone strongly believes that her brother should have a proper burial, although it goes against the kings wishes. She is willing to do it herself, therefore Creon thinks she should also be killed. He does not change his mind until he talks with Tiresias, who says nothing good will come of it. By that time it is too late and Antigone has hung herself. In the play, the two clashing points of view ultimately led to the destruction of Antigone and Creon. Chorus and point of view are just two of the many techniques Sophocles used in his writing.

III. Setting

Antigone was written in Athens around 441 B.C. All the dialogue takes place outside the Royal Palace of Thebes, although some events were reported to have occurred on Mt. Parnassus. The play takes place over the course of one day.

The first half of Sophocles life was filled with optimism due to the Greek war victories. His earliest works reflect those happy times, including the rise of the Parthenon. However, Antigone was writen just as the Greek Society began to decline. The Peloponnesian War started in 41 B.C. and ended in 404 B.C. That contributed to why all of Sophocles works written after 440 B.C. are so disturbing. Those plays portray characters with unsolvable problems.

IV. Theme

There are many different themes in Antigone. Two of them are, rebellion and the expression of free will. There is a long chain of rebellious events that begins with Eteocles rebelling against his father, and not turning the throne over to his brother, Polynices. He gets angry and rebels against Thebes, by attacking the king, and both brothers end up getting killed. Because Creon will not give Polynices a proper funeral ceremony, Antigone buries him herself, saying, But I shall bury him. And if I die for this pure crime, I am content. Although Antigone is going against the kings wishes she is doing it on her own free will. This is because Antigone said she would die for her crime, if needed, and she does. Another example of the characters expressing their freedom is when Creon goes to save his niece. He does this after he has talked to Tiresias and consulted the Chorus, but he made the decision to release her on his own conscience. Freedom and rebellion are the most consistent themes throughout the drama.

V. Characterization

Antigone is the main character and probably the most static. She never changes her mind through the play, and she keeps to her word. When she is burying Polynices she says that she will die for her crime, and she does not lie when confronted about being what she did. Antigone is the first to die in this tragedy. She does so by tearing a strip of her dress and hanging herself in the cave, which she chose over starving to death.

Creon is also a major character in the play, although he is dynamic. Creon is the king of Thebes and Antigones uncle. He is extremely stubborn, and disbelieves what Tiresias has to say because he does not want to admit he was wrong. Creon is finally persuaded to free Antigone from the cave after hearing from the Chorus. The play does not specifically tell the audience that Creon dies, but we can assume that because he feels there is nothing left for him to live for.

Ismene and Haemon are two of the minor characters. Ismene is Antigones beautiful sister, who is not as strong as Antigone. She is the ideal lady for that time, because she did not want to help her sister, her reason being she was not brave enough to go against the kings law. We are not sure what happens to Ismene in the end, although she stated earlier, But what is life to me, without my sister? Haemon is the son of Creon and Antigones future husband. He agrees with Antigone and truly loves her. When he sees his bride dead, he commits suicide and stabs himself.

Discussing Saki’s Sympathy For The Underdog and his Dislike for aunts and such like privileged people

I think that Saki’s life immensely affected his short stories. He himself was an underdog in a life of cruelty and no reward. His Mother died and Saki was sent to live with his aunts in England. He was treated cruelly and so this explains the underdog’s life in his stories. The domestic tyrants in the stories are based a lot on his aunts, as being cruel unkind and completely abusing their power over the children.

The three short stories I will be discussing are, ‘The Story Teller’, ‘Sredni Vashtar’ and ‘The Lumber Room’. These three stories are about underdogs that are treated with cruelty yet in the end, ‘get their own back’ it seems.

Many parents with children know how hard it is to travel on long trips with them. In the short story ‘The Story Teller’ by Saki, an aunt was travelling with three little children. When she tries to get the children’s attention, the children don’t respond to her and continue to disobey her. The aunt is portrayed throughout the story, by Saki, as being unable to control the children or keep their attention for longer than a minute. As she can’t do this she tells the children to look out the window at the fields with grass in. She then tells the children answers to their questions, but they persist to get an answer when she doesn’t have an answer, when they keep persisting she quickly draws their attention to something that has been there all along. This shows that she isn’t capable of handling children. When a bachelor who is travelling in the same carriage as them starts to tell the children a story, the children, with hesitation at first, start to listen to him with excitement.

The story is seen as the bachelor as being both the underdog and the tyrant. He embarrasses the aunt and dismisses her authority and realises her made up relationship with the children.

The short story that I have chosen is ‘Sredni Vashtar’ by Saki. I chose this story as it appealed to me, and kept me thinking through out about the themes of revenge and imagination. “Sredni Vashtar” is a questioning story, as some parts of it may seem different to others according to the person’s imagination. The real turning part in this story is the death of Mrs.Deropp (who is Conradins cousin), by my assertion. This is why the story interested me so much; therefore I thought that it would be a good short story to write about.

In ‘The Lumber Room’ there is a tyrannical aunt who likes to give out trips to the good so the bad would be punished. So Nicholas, who is the underdog, is being punished for something that actually happened, ‘There was actually a frog in his bread and milk he knew this because he put it there himself’. This is an unrighteous punishment by the aunt, the domestic tyrant, as it portrays that she thinks she is always right and never wrong. She deliberately tells him not to go into the gooseberry garden as to make him want to go in their so she can punish him even more. This as being the evil and hated person she is. Saki uses his wording well as to get our dislike for the tyrant, such as, the ‘aunt by assertion’ and ‘soi-disant aunt’. He also shows her way of thinking and telling lies to help herself. The aunt is seen by Saki and Nicholas to be cruel, unfair, frail, old and tyrannical.

Nicholas sees this as an opportunity for Nicholas to put his long thought of and revised plan into action. He needs to get into the ‘Lumber Room’. The primary interest of the story is the conflict, the battle and struggle between two different worlds. The world of children on one hand and that of grown-ups on the other. The main character’s personality (Nicholas) also determines the type of story in which he is involved. I identified with the character because he wants to claim for children’s rights and he is ready to show that adults can be wrong.



The savagery of ‘Sredni Vashtar’ is missing, but the best stories here ‘The Story-Teller’ and ‘The Lumber Room’ are also about child psychology and adult incomprehension of childhood. It is probably the attention-grabbing, Nietzsche title which has ensured the survival of this collection, though it would at least serve as a good introduction to Sakis writing.

What is Jazz?

“Jazz is Americas classical music,” according to Dr. Billy Taylor, and while still rooted in the African-American experience, it is truly an international phenomenon. Jazz is a kind of music in which improvisation is typically an important part. In most jazz performances, players play solos which they make up on the spot, which requires a considerable amount of skill.

There is tremendous variety in jazz, but most jazz is very rhythmic, has a forward momentum called swing, and uses bent or blue notes. Arising from their homelands by the slave industry, forbidden to play the drums or to speak their native languages the first African-Americans nonetheless kept and preserved a common idea from the establishment of African music. The citys population was more diverse than anywhere else in the South, and people of African, French, Caribbean, Italian, German, Mexican, and American Indian, as well as English, descent interacted with one another. African-American musical traditions mixed with others and gradually jazz emerged from a blend of ragtime, marches, ragtime, blues, and other kinds of music. At first jazz was mostly for dancing. Then In later years people would just sit and listen to it.

After the first recordings of jazz were made in 117, the music spread widely and developed rapidly. The evolution of jazz was led by a series of masterful musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, and Miles Davis. Jazz developed a series of different styles including traditional jazz, swing, bebop, cool jazz, and jazz rock, among others. “Traditional jazz” is mainly used to describe “early and influential styles as ragtime, boogie woogie, and Harlem stride piano.” Bebop was basically the first modern swing style to emerge in jazz.

Jazz musicians place a high value on finding their own sound and style, and that means, for example, that trumpeter Miles Davis sounds very different than trumpeter Louis Armstrong. Jazz musicians like to play their songs in their own distinct styles, and so you might listen to a dozen different jazz recordings of the same song, but each will sound different. The musicians playing styles make each version different, and so do the improvised solos. Jazz is basically about making something familiar into something new. Blake is one of the major Romantic poets, whose verse and artwork became part of the wider movement of Romanticism in late eighteenth and early nineteenth century European Culture. For the nineteenth century reader Blakes work posed a single question was he sane or mad? The poet Wordsworth, for example, commented that there is no doubt that this poor man was mad, but there is something in his madness which interests me more than the sanity of Lord Byron and Walter Scott and John Ruskin similarly felt that Blakes work was diseased and wild, even if his mind was great and wise. In the Twentieth century, however, Blake has been recognized as a highly original and important poet, artist and writer. The famous work of Blake that I chose to analyze is entitled Nebuchadnezzar, created in 175.

Blakes work can be difficult at times, mainly because the reader is offered Blakes visions in Blakes own terms. What Blake seeks to express can only be presented in terms of vague abstractions and allusions, with a cosmic perspective on issues of faith, religion, philosophy and belief, and this must also mean that the reader or viewer has to work hard. Yet the effort is worth it. William Blake was born in 1757, the third son of a London hosier. As the son of a hosier, a generally lower middle class occupation in late eighteenth century London, he was brought up in a poor household, a preparation for the relative poverty in which he would live for most of his life. He also received little formal schooling, which is all the more remarkable given both the depth and range of his reading of the Bible, of Milton and Greek and Latin classic literature, evident throughout his work. He lived until his death in 187, and was buried in a common grave.

Blake’s paintings usually have no accompanying text. This obviously goes back to Mitchell’s belief that photographs and paintings should stand alone. I think Blake felt the same way. Before trying to analysis the painting myself I wanted to find out more about it and the painter. As Berger states to avoid mystification (something he is strongly against) we need to understand the artist’s context. What is the artist’s way of seeing? Only then could I understand and analyze the paintings for myself. When I first saw the painting it looked very interesting and as if a story was behind it. I stared at it for a while trying to grasp my perspective of it. “Perspective makes the single eye the center of the visible world. Everything converges on the eye as to the vanishing point of infinity”(11).Because I don’t really have an artistic eye the painting only looked like a creature in cave, half man, half beast. I have a strong foundation in the church, so after reading the title I remembered the story of Nebuchadnezzar in the Bible. The story told of ‘Nebuchadnezzar’ who was punished by God for his unbelief and pride in the Book of Daniel. The book of Daniel represents him as proud and domineering, and eventually descending into madness. I then began to notice that the most light was focused on his face and how the man/beast looks frightened, as if he is running from something. There could really be a deeper “reading” or meaning of this painting but I feel that my reading of it is close to other scholars and Blake’s. It is hindered by my lack of knowledge and appreciation of art. As Berger stated, “ the way we see things is affected by what we know or what we believe”(106).

What many scholars think and what I agree with is that Nebuchadnezzar captures the dark and mysterious madness that controlled the ancient king of Babylon. Perhaps Blake understood madness. He lived during the time of the French Revolution and the first trials of kingly madness in the English king, George III. Blake has in this painting taken the image of a man and skillfully molded him into a wild beast. The long unkempt hair and claw-like nails add to the terror in the eyes, showing a wild, confused and frightened king. The body is animal-like; muscles and shoulders are powerful from years of crawling and climbing on hands and knees. The simplicity of the setting and the unity of color eliminate distractions and a luminous light helps to focus attention on the face. In simple strokes Blake has been able to convey to us an inner wildness, a suggestion of personal madness, which is both ancient and modern.

I think that Blake’s experiences and lifestyle contributed greatly to his way of seeing this painting. Throughout his lifetime I am sure he has encountered many people who he thought were mad and materialistic, especially since he grew up in poverty. I also think that Blake, in his works, used Nebuchadnezzar to symbolize the bestial condition of a man who believes only in the reality of material things. This painting to me seemed most like a drama of contrast. Blake doesn’t seem to agree that one should focus on material things and tried to bring out the repercussions of that through this painting. The Greatest Lesson In Life

The greatest lesson in life that I learned was not to rush into things when I was not ready.

What I mean is I moved out with my boyfriend, at the time, and I was not ready for it. I was not

ready for the sacrifices I had to make. I gave up so much and got little in return. I had to work a

lot, I barely had time for school, and I had little or no fun. I rushed into growing up when I

should have been happy with being young. I thought moving in with my boyfriend would have

been great because no one could tell me what to do. Man was I wrong!

When I moved out of my parent’s home, I had to find a job. I needed something that paid

well, because my boyfriend did not have any money. I found a job at Ferrando’s Italian Pizzeria,

which happened to be close to my new home. I started out as a waitress and later became a cook.

I was doing well there, money wise. I had enough from all summer to go to school. My parents

were already unhappy with me moving in with my boyfriend, so I hoped that by going to school

it would appease them. I applied to Aiken Tech in July and got accepted. I then applied for

financial aid. To my surprise, I received the help I needed. I went to school Monday,

Wednesday, and Friday at 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. I also went Tuesday and Thursday at a.m. to 11

a.m. I went to work at or 4 everyday, so I did not have a lot of time for homework. I worked

forty to fifty hours a week. It was tough trying to fit in my school papers and projects. I could not

give my all. I had to sacrifice a lot of sleep also because I usually got home around eleven or

midnight every night. It was the same routine everyday.

I learned how to manage my money wisely. I learned how to get cheaper grocery

products that still had the same great taste as the brand name. I had to limit my necessities to

what I absolutely needed. I learned that the price one fast food meal for two people equally the

cost of or 4 home cooked meals. I cooked at home usually so I could save money. However, in

managing my money this way, I could not have the things I loved. I loved getting my nails done,

watching movies, and going out to eat occasionally. Now I can splurge a little.

After the first few months I began to see who my boyfriend really was. He was an

overprotective, overbearing, jealous jerk. He always told me what to do, what to wear, and how

to think. He brainwashed me into what he would like. I began to hate him and myself. He would

try to control me. If I tried to go eat with friends, he would have a fit because he either did not

like who it was or I was spending too much money. After a few times of trying, I just gave up so

I could avoid fighting. It was worse than being at home. My friends did not like him because he

was controlling me, so they always fought with him. He did not like them even more because

they were trying to help me. Then after almost years of dating, we broke up and I moved back

home.

I have moved on now, I have found “the one” and we are getting married April 17, 004.

I learned from all this which will help me with my new relationship. I learned to not rush into

things when I am not ready. I will not make this mistake again. I had to sacrifice the things I

loved. I made too many sacrifices and did not have enough in return. I had to work a lot, did not

have a to of time for school, and I could not enjoy myself. If I could take it back, I would

because it brought too much pain in my life physically, emotionally, and financially.
