Throughout history, society has always been controlled by the men. And more often then not, they were white men. White men inflicted harm upon the black population through violence and racial bigotry, and resulted damage that occurs within the black community itself. Through The Color Purple and Beloved, Alice Walker and Toni Morrison displays the biased history of white men during the early twentieth century of America. Despite both author’s different writing techniques, Walker and Morrison were able to aptly display the prejudice and harm imposed upon the black population by setting the mood of a tragic endurance with a sense of hope and wonder, using a strong but yet vulnerable feminist tone, and combining the themes of struggle, hope, racism, and freedom all together. With the similar depiction of the themes of slavery and racism, and the differences that exist between the narrator’s tones, the authors of The Color Purple and Beloved were able to illustrate the horrors of racism and sexism during the early twentieth century. Although it could be argued that at the time in which they wrote these novels all of this was abolished, they still saw the undertones of racism in society. In writing these novels, they truly rewrote history from the stance of oppressed black women, instead of the empowered white man. The chain reaction not only demonstrated within these novels which force the public to look into itself and see if the seeds of racism truly are removed from our society, but also provided a roadmap to freedom.

One of the themes expressed in the story is that the human psyche is capable of being derived from many different fixations. Discussing the following areas may prove this thesis true plot, characterization, and symbolism. Byatt seems to suggest that the human psyche in this story is characterized as realism versus fantasy.

One of the stories greatest features is that it begins and ends as a fairytale. From the plot, we are able to see how both Primrose’s and Penny’s characters prove the thesis true. Both girls had never seen a forest before, and they decided to take advantage of the opportunity. Primrose, the one with a great imagination, was hesitant to go far into the forest because she imagined that ‘the forest” was a source of terror and was afraid to see what awaited her. Both of these characters lost their fathers after the war, but found it difficult to remember them. However after the girls experienced The Thing in the Forest”, they were unable to forget it.” Because of the reality of what the women encountered, they distinctly remembered its face and body, its frightening sound, and its horrid smell. After many years, the girls reunited and realized how dissimilar they really were.

In the characterizations of both women, Penny and Primrose had much in common, yet they were polar opposites. Even at a young age Primrose was an imaginer”, while Penny was a reader. The two women differed in other ways as well. Their speech, their physical features, and their clothing were all diametrically opposed. Even after the war there were still similarities and differences in their fates. Both dyed their hair blond and lived on their own, but never married. When they returned to the forest, their reactions were different as well. Penny was a very concrete and ordinary person who, unlike Primrose was unable to see the beauty in things.” Primrose, on the other hand, was able to see both the loveliness and the hideousness of what she had experienced. Unlike Penny, she was able to find beauty in the thing in the forest,” and to remember her experience as a good one.

Symbolism was another aspect that played a major role in this story. Alys’s beauty was a symbol of the girl’s youth. Her death was a symbol that their youth was over, along with their lost innocence. Both Primrose and Penny had questioned if Alys really existed or if they had just imagined her in their fantasy. Another symbol was the thing” in the forest. Perhaps it was a symbol of the loathly worm that nobody was able to see. Because of Primrose’s broad imagination and her inventiveness, she was able to see and also believe that this creature in reality truly existed.

Introduction

For over a decade Toyota motor company has been the leading auto manufacturing in quality, customer satisfaction, and affordability. But in the spring of 1 Toyota Motor Manufacturing (TMM) in Georgetown, Kentucky noticed a problem. They were beginning to see more and more cars coming off the assembly line with mal functioning or defective rear seats. Why now would such a problem arise? At first glance the seat issued looked to be a supplier based problem but upon further investigation the true reason for the problem began to come to light.

Toyota’s prided itself on building a production system designed to reduce costs by thoroughly, eliminating waste while upholding the highest quality standards in the industry. Toyota achieved this goal by applying two principles, first they employed the JIT production system, and subsequent they applied the jidoka principle, which effectively makes any production problem instantly self-evident and stops the production immediately.

These two systems were employed in the Kentucky manufacturing plant and they were working very well for every other portion of the assembly line but the seat installation station. How could a system work so efficiently in one area and so poorly in another? This is the question facing Toyota’s assembly manager Doug Friesen.

livepaperhelp.com

The Seat Problem

Doug Friesen is the manager of assembly, for Toyota’s Georgetown, plant, and he is responsible for the entire production floor. Currently Toyota is having a problem with their rear seat installation and Doug in the man on the line to fix the seat problem. Doug first course of action is to identify the root cause, and then create a mitigation plan. Toyota’s seat problem was costing them approx 45 cars per shift and several hours a week of overtime. It is clear to Doug that the problem lies between TMM and their seat supplier Kentucky Framed Seat (KFS).

The problem began to propagate itself in early 1 when the Toyota was preparing to introduce the new model Camry. The new Camry had 5 seat styles instead of the three styles used by the old model, and to complicate the issue Toyota began production of the Camry wagon (world wide) in April of 1 . This created an increase in seat combination from in early 1 to 18 in April.

All the new combinations caused a major interruption in the TMM, and KFS production process, the old magic system had lost some of its magic. Now KFS was responsible for 18 seat combination and the following problems resulted at the TMM facility

• The rear seat andon pulls have soared by 450% and 150% for the 1st and nd shifts respectively, during April.

• Defects are mostly the responsibility of KFS, and KFS owns on average 85% of the defects found in seats on a single day (see Figure 1).

With KFS owning 85% of the defects on the TMM production floor Doug knows that it is now time to make changes and identify exactly why they are having so much trouble with the rear seats.

In Doug’s attempt to adequately address the problem he interviewed his assembly teams and found very few new problems. His assembly staff could not think of anything new that could cause the problem with the seats. This leaves Doug with a couple options internally, first he could reassign the seat assembly teams and bring on more experienced crew to solve the problem, he could improve the off-line operations in the cases where manages decided to continue correcting seats off-line, and lastly he could address the issue of overworking KFS.

Figure 1

As Doug Friesen, I would concentrate my efforts on the root case of the problem and not the outcome of the problem. The solution to the rear seat problem should be addressed in a dual effort attack. First, KFS should be contacted to identify exactly why the rear seats are having problems. With this TMM and KFS should work closely together to complete a process evaluation to narrow down the possible sources of the defects. Subsequently, I would concentrate on TMM in-house problem. As we can see from Figure II (In Appendix I) the andon pulls (along the seat installation stations) in April increased gradually throughout the month. This clearly indicates a problem with the installation of the rear seat. TMM must look into the following three internal issues to resolve this problem.

• Increased number of defective items from supplier (KFS), defects build on defects

• Gradual decline in part quality, such as screws, fixtures, tools etc.

• New Team members in the rear seat installation group still learning

The issue with KFS can be solved by working closely with their management team to education and train their employees. The issue of part quality can be easily controlled by addressing the issue with the production control foreman and the purchasing agents responsible for those parts.

The last issue is with TMM’s new team members. Data shows that the increase in andon pulls occurred when the new crew was assigned to the rear seat assembly section. This is more than likely the major cause of the in house based defects. TMM could combat this problem by partner each new employee with a more experience mentor and have the senior employee train the junior employee as an apprentice until they are ready to work on their own.

Is this Toyota Production System?

As far as deviation from the Toyota Production System, the manner in which the seat problem was handled is far from jidoka. Jidoka calls for building quality into the production process and strongly condemns any deviation from value-additions. The seat defects were not being corrected immediately upon their detection, and therefore the process was being violated. By allowing the defective seats to go into the system as defects Toyota broke its own rules. In this case the cars with defective seats were allowed to slip though the system for the following reasons

1. The final assembly people already knew of the problem

. It was possible to finish building the car without seat assemblies

. It was felt that stopping the line was too expensive given how long to took to obtain the replacement seat.

The breach of the jidoka system ended up costing Toyota a significant amount of time and money to identify and correct the problem. Because cars were allowed to be completed with a defective seat the problem was essential swept under the carpet until it could contain no more. This action caused Toyota’s famed quality control system to fail. Toyota celebrated production control systems were so perfect that they where able to increase production while reducing cost. But with this seat issue Toyota began to become a reactive company instead of a proactive company.

The Real Problem

Fortunately for Toyota, the real problem facing is Doug Friesen is not a lack of policy and procedure, but instead it is a deviation from the standard procedure. The seat issue should have been quashed the first time it appeared as a problem. But management did not understand the overall problem so they allowed PC, QC, and team leader to send the defective car on down the line. Their actions allowed this seat problem to promulgate itself into a major problem. But Toyota’s superior quality controls system and their proactive approach allowed Doug and his assembly team to catch the problem before it reached the consumer. This situation just goes to show the “an ounce of prevention is “truly” worth a pound of cure.”

Moon Tiger - Denise Levertov

The Moon tiger

in the room here

it came in, it is

live paper help

prowling sleekly

under and over

the twin beds

See its small head

silver smooth,

hear the pad of its

large feet. Look,

its white stripes

in the light that slid

through the jalousies

It is sniffing our

clothes, its cold nose

nudges our bodies.

THe beds are narrow

but Im coming in with you.

The title is called moon tiger, although it may not literally mean a real tiger. I believe that the author of the poem is referring to moonlight. This poem really paints a picture in the mind, when the author uses the words/phrases small head, silver smooth, large feet, white stripes, cold nose nudges. The author uses those words to paint the picture of a silver tiger, pawing around a room. What the author is trying to get through to the readers, is the way moonlight shines into a bedroom at night, and how it seems to sneak in like a tiger, quietly.

If we must die - Claude McKay

If we must die, let it not be like hogs

Hunted and penned in an inglorious spot,

While round us bark the mad and hungry dogs,

Making their mock at our accursed lot.

If we must die, O let us nobly die,

So that our precious blood may not be shed

In vain; then even the monsters we defy

Shall be constrained to honor us though dead!

O kinsmen we must meet the common foe!

Though far outnumbered let us show us brave,

And for their thousand blows deal one deathblow!

What though before us lies the open grave?

Like men well face the murderous, cowardly pack,

Pressed to the wall, dying, but fighting back!

If we must die was written to tell people to fight back. The title lets you know that there is going to be a catch to it. IF we must die, that is saying, that if we are going to die, THIS is what should happen, this is what is going to happen. In the first line, you see If we must die, let it not be like hogs, this is comparing human death to animal slaughter. McKay is trying to show that if one must die, they should die noble, and that they WILL die noble. Though far out numbered let us show us brave, this shows that even though they are outnumbered, they are not going to back down. This poem is basically saying, if you have to die, dont just die, fight back first. You see this in the example in the last two lines, Like men well face the murderous, cowardly pack, Pressed to the wall, dying, but fighting back! I think that the tone in this is inspirational, because he is trying to inspire people to stand up for yourself.

Alone - Maya Angelou

Lying, thinking

Last night

How to find my soul a home

Where water is not thirsty

And bread loaf is not stone

I came up with one thing

And I dont believe Im wrong

That nobody,

But nobody

Can make it out here alone.

Alone, all alone

Nobody, but nobody

Can make it out here alone.

There are some millionaires

With money they cant use

Their wives run round like banshees

Their children sing the blues

Theyve got expensive doctors

To cure their hearts of stone.

But nobody

No, nobody

Can make it out here alone.

Alone, all alone

Nobody, but nobody

Can make it out here alone.

Now if you listen closely

Ill tell you what I know

Storm clouds are gathering

The wind is gonna blow

The race of man is suffering

And I can hear the moan,

Cause nobody,

But nobody

Can make it out here alone.

Alone, all alone

Nobody, but nobody

Can make it out here alone.

In the title, you can definently tell that this poem is going to have a more depressing tone, but yet somewhat calm sense to it. In the first stanza, we learn that she wants a home for her soul, which I believe means, that she wants some place to be where she doesnt have to think or worry about problems. She sees people wasting their lives on things that dont matter, and she comes to the point that you cant be successful with your life

Moore essay # 5

Chapter 6

, Shayne

A. What are the main points of that Moore tries to make in the chapter?

livepaperhelp.com

Moore basically talks about some of things that people and the government are doing to destroy the earth. He says some people are faithfully recycling and the government is misleading those people by making them think they are recycling every little thing we throw in the recycling bins. He says that Congress could have saved close to $700,000 dollars by just recycling things such as glass bottles, aluminum cans, and cardboard. Moore says another way we are killing the earth single-handedly is driving around these vehicles which spit out chemicals that are putting a hole in the ozone layer. He says Global warming is messing up the world’s temperature and if we don’t do something about it we are in a lot of trouble. Moore says there are chemicals as a result us that are potentially dangerous to us if we don’t start cleaning up our act. He says the most deadly disease known to man (mad cow disease) is a result of the British mishandling their meat supply. At the end of the chapter he discusses how utility customers pay more for there electricity on the west coast of the nation because of deregulation (I still don’t fully understand what this means no matter how many times I read it).

B. What is the main theme that emerges from these points?

The theme I got from this chapter was that if we don’t start cleaning up our act that we are headed for destruction. Congress needs to also hold up their end of the bargain and contribute to the things we are trying to do for the earth such as recycling and carpooling every now and then. He is basically saying that if we are going to take our time and actually recycle then they should process everything we put into those blue and green bins. Saying that they don’t always have time to recycle everything is not a good excuse. They should make time to recycle everything if it is going to help clean up the earth and also save tax payers money.

C. What solution(s) does he propose, if any?

He does not offer many solutions throughout the chapter but he does add a couple of things such as how to survive global warming and how to make sure your drinking water is safe enough to drink.

D. Do you generally agree or disagree with Moore?. Explain Why

I happen to agree with Mr. Moore because I have heard too many people talking about things such as global warming and harmful chemicals in our drinking water. I always have wanted to do something but I always feel that whatever I am doing is not helping in any way. Chapters like this make you even more skeptical about whether you are actually helping or not.

In the play “Andre’s Mother” by Terence McNally Andre’s mother does not speak in the play, her silence supports the theme because it shows the way people still view homosexuals even in this modern society.

In the play “Andre’s Mother”, Andre’s mother does not say a word during the entire play although the character Cal, who is Andre’s gay lover, speaks to her for a great length of the play. I believe the silence represented the way homosexuality is treated today. Andre’s mother was silent during the play much like society is silent about the sensitive subject. it’s a topic no one feels real comfortable talking about out in the open, So Terence McNally made Andre’s mother silent to represent how our modern society keeps there views silent because of fears of being ridiculed. There was some good in the silence in the play too, in the end Andre’s mother remained silent, but the family was speaking words of remembrance of Andre and letting go of balloons in a symbolic way of saying good bye and making peace with god, and although Andre’s mother still did not say anything even to the balloon she did give it a kiss before letting it go, which shows how society is becoming more and more accepting of different people’s sexual orientation as time goes by, So it also shows a positive in a sad play.

There is another meaning to the silence of Andre’s mother in this play. The silence could also represent how homosexual people have to keep there mouths shut about there sexual orientation because of fear of being ridiculed by people who are ignorant and don’t understand that not everyone is the same. In the play it is said that Andre never tells his mother about him being a homosexual because he was afraid of what she would think of him, although his lover Cal was open about it to his family and they were understanding, he was not. So Terence McNally used the silence of Andre’s mother to represent how many gays in today’s society still have to be quiet about how they choose to live, because there still is a lot of prejudice in the world today. At the end of the play Cal talks to Andre’s mother and it seems like he is trying to win her approval and he can not do it so he gives up and walks away because she still just stood there in silence, but after he walks away she gives the balloon a kiss and lets it go. Which shows that things are getting better, and maybe her and Cal will form a friendship in the future.

There are variuos problems that many students have with the University of Memphis. One major problem that most students have with the university is the outrageous prices of books in the on-campus bookstore. I remember on August , 00, the Saturday before school started, a new incoming freshman, Renee Wills, and her parents were in the bookstore on campus complainig about the steep prices of books. People these days are crazy and money hungry. The pices of books back n my day were never this much, argued Renees mother. According to some information I gathered, the average freshman spends about three hundred and thirty dollars on books. As a persons cumulative hours increase, causing a change of classification, a required book can cost anywhere from $5 to $00.

Three major points have to be considered to find the solution of this problem the feasiblity of the solution, the increase of cost, and time efficiency. As far as the feasiblity of the solution, the problem would never get fixed if the solution is not able to be caried out. In addition, there are problems tuition hikes; therefore, cost does not need to increase. Since the cost of books is a current problem, a solution needs to be done in a timely manner.

Three possible alternatives come to mind when probing this problem. A first possible solution to the U of Ms book problem would be to include books in tuition. The students that attend the university already have to pay $1850 if they live in state and $54 if they are out-of-state residents; why not include the books in tuition? If books were included in tuition, people would not have to work extra hours that could be used for studying. In addition, the solution would not be done in a timely manner because it would take time to gather every students information about the costs of his or her books. The solution is feasible, but it would raise the cost of tuition.

Niccolo Machiavelli (146-157), an Italian statesman and political philosopher was employed on diplomatic missions as defence secretary of the Republic of Florence. After retiring from public life he wrote his famous work, The Prince (15), describing the means by which a leader may gain and maintain power.

Although written 500 years ago, Machiavelli’s views still have many relevant implications for modern society. Machiavelli was among the first proponents of organisational theory and the first to identify the relationship between effective leadership and the power it exercises over scarce human resources in the organisational environment. Even though Machiavelli’s intention was to focus on political organisations, governments and leaders; the fact that all organisations are to a certain extend influenced by power and politics, his ideas and recommendations are relevant to all organisations, including businesses.

Machiavelli’s intention was to advise his “Prince” in politics and political behaviour. Therefore, in order to understand Machiavelli’s perceptions in the context of modern organisations it is useful to assess the organisation from the political design perspective. The political perspective explains an organization as a “social system”, encompassing diverse, and sometimes contradictory, interests and goals in which competition for resources is expected’ . Under this perspective, leaders are politicians. Therefore, this allows us to compare Machiavelli’s thoughts and recommendations for the political leader with those for leaders in modern organisations.

Morality in modern organisations

Nowhere in the Prince does Machiavelli make morality or ethics his explicit concern. He clearly and concisely states a foolproof program for a political leader based on his perception and experience in which he implicitly states that all human beings, at all times and in all places, are naturally disposed to protecting their own interests (or simply selfish). That is to say that we primarily seek to realize our own personal interests, goals, or purposes; and that we pursue our interests with varying degrees of rationality.

Alistair MacLeod’s “To Every Thing There Is a Season” is an exemplary illustration of an initiation or coming of age story. MacLeod effectively portrays the confusing feelings that accompany the narrator’s sudden and abrupt transition from the magical world of being a child into the harsher reality of adulthood. MacLeod uses an extraordinary amount of symbols and imagery to depict this.

The story begins with an introduction to an eleven-year-old boy, caught between being a child and becoming an adult. His childlike innocence is fading. MacLeod uses the symbol of snowflakes to illustrate the pureness of the child. “The large flakes were soft and new then and almost generous, and the earth to which they fell was still warm . . . they disappeared at the moment of contact” (MacLeod, 0-10). “When we turned to leave, it fell upon our footprints, and as the night wore on obliterated them and all the records of our movements” (MacLeod, 10). The disappearance of the snowflakes and footprints represents the fading of his innocence. Just as the snowflakes disappeared, his innocence is also disappearing as he moves closer to becoming an adult. MacLeod also uses the image of the children trick-or-treating to depict the innocence within the boy. “We carried out pillowcases from house to house, knocking on doors to become silhouettes in the light thrown out from kitchens (white pillowcases held out by whitened forms)” (MacLeod, 10). The “white pillowcases” and “whitened forms” represent the child’s innocence.

A major symbol of the narrator’s childhood, is Santa Claus and the narrator’s belief in him. “I am troubled myself about the nature of Santa Claus and I am trying to hang on to him in any way that I can. It is true that at my age I no longer really believe in him, yet I have hoped in all his possibilities as fiercely as I can . . . ” (MacLeod, 10). The narrator is struggling with his belief in Santa Claus. He wants to believe in him still, but at his age, he feels that he shouldn’t. “. . . I seek sanctuary and reinforcement even in an ignorance I know I dare not trust” (MacLeod, 11). His belief in Santa Claus helps him face the hardships in life, like his father’s illness and his brother being so far away. His father tells him to “hang on to the good things in our lives as long as we are able.” (MacLeod, 11). So he hangs onto his belief of Santa.

The image of the ocean beginning to freeze over represents the commencing of the boy’s transition into becoming an adult. “The ocean is flat and calm and along the coast, in the scooped-out coves, has turned to an icy slush” (MacLeod, 1). The water has not yet completely frozenly, symbolizing that he is not yet left his childhood completely behind him. “The clothes my mother hangs on the line are frozen almost instantly . . .” (MacLeod, 1). This again illustrates the boy’s transition from a child (the wet clothes) to an adult (the frozen clothes).

When the narrator’s older brother comes home for Christmas, the boy hopes that he can be a child again, and that his brother “. . . will be happy and strong and confident for us all” (MacLeod, 14). Unknown to him, his time as a child is now limited, as he will soon find out the truth about Santa Claus (the one thing that still holds him in the world of a child) and enter the world of an adult. “The boxes are filled with gifts neatly wrapped and bearing tags. The ones for my younger brothers say “from Santa Claus” but mine are not among them any more, as I know with certainty they will never be again” (MacLeod, 17). He knows the truth about Santa Claus now and has finally completed the transition from a child to an adult.

Alistair MacLeod uses the powerful effect of imagery and symbols to exemplify the boy’s transition from a child to an adult. This development in the narrator makes “To Every Thing There Is a Season” a perfect example of an initiation or coming of age story. Contemporary Hero

The Conspiracy

I walked out of the Paul¡¯s apartment, I sniffed the air, feeling fulfilled and complete. There was light snow falling which is unusual at this time of the year. The street was dark and quiet. It was a peaceful feeling. Then suddenly, the screeching of tires nearly pierced my eardrums. Next thing I know I was on the ground, I felt no pain as I closed my eyes and what I saw in my mind was truly astounding¡

The year is 008 and the world is a dangerous and chaotic place. Terrorists operate openly, killing thousands; a disease, notoriously named ¡°god¡¯s revenge¡± kill even more. The worlds economics are close to collapse and the gap between the insanely wealthy and the desperately poor has grown to the size of the Grand Canyon.

live paper help

My code name is ¡°AJ Smith¡±. I am an agent working for UNATO, United Nations Anti-Terrorism Organization. I just got promoted from the Academy and am now working with my brother Paul Smith. Our main mission is to find the vaccine named ¡°nano¡± for ¡°god¡¯s revenge¡± while keeping the crime rate at a minimum. I thought I had the world at my feet, until that day arrived.

As I can still recall it was a rainy day that day, a Friday like any Friday, I woke up late for work that day, dreary from the previous night¡¯s excessive consumption of alcohol. As I rushed into the office of my boss David Mandorley handed me my new assignment. It seemed no different from the other countless assignments I¡¯ve done so far. I walked back down to my office, passing the same old red door labeled ¡°Authorized Personnel ONLY¡±. I opened the door of my office and flicked the switch.

¡°What took you so long AJ?¡± said a voice which was very familiar.

I jumped a little inside, but I would never show it on my face.

¡°Still remember who I am?¡± It was Paul. Only he had the skill to come into my office without a key.

I replied with a smile, and then I asked him why he was here for.

¡°Oh I just thought that you¡¯re now so famous that you probably forgot about me.¡± He replied.

¡°Seriously what¡¯s up?¡±

¡°Just telling you to be careful AJ, looks can deceive. Doesn¡¯t hurt to try the opposite¡¡± Paul responded nonchalantly as he walked away without looking back. Typical Paul.

I sat down and logged into my personal account where I get the information for the inventories I need for this mission. Surprisingly there was none. I opened the folder Mandorley gave me and found a piece of card. On it, it simply said ¡°100 My place, PAUL 05¡±. I felt that something was not right, but decided to see it out anyway. I anxiously loaded and polished my usual weapons and waited for the time to come. Finally, my watch indicated 1855 and I took off for Paul¡¯s apartment.

I arrived, and normally I would go in through the secret way using the window, but this time I decided to go in through the front door. I knocked but no one replied. Running out of patience I lock-picked the door and went in. Empty. The room was dark and empty. I turned on my night vision goggles and sneaked around. Suddenly in the corner of my eyes I noticed something which wasn¡¯t usually there. I went up closer to it. It was a portable keypad, one where you enter the pin number from anywhere and it would open a door. I took out the piece of paper I found in the folder. ¡°100 My place, PAUL 05¡±. I entered 05 but access was denied. Then I remembered what Paul said to me before he left. ¡°Just telling you to be careful AJ, looks can deceive. Doesn¡¯t hurt to try the opposite¡¡± 5---0. A door slid open behind me as I watched, Paul never told me about this secret entry.

I went in, and it was an armory. This place had every weapon. Plasma rifle, flame thrower, rocket launcher and more. I took a couple of explosives and rifles and just then another piece of paper caught my attention. It reads ¡°UNATO Basement immediately, PAUL¡±. With now suspicions very high, I headed back to UNATO headquarters.

I parked my car in a rural park and silently walked to the UNATO basement without trying to be noticed. And at last, Paul was there waiting for me.

¡°What took you so long?¡± Typical.

¡°Get to the point Paul, what is going on?¡± I asked losing patience fast.

¡°Ok AJ, it¡¯s about time I tell you what is really going on. You heard of Johnny Patton?¡±

¡°The world¡¯s richest man and the only producer of Nano?¡±

¡°Yes, but what is interesting is that he is also the inventor of God¡¯s Revenge. He used his wealth to construct a universal constructor and started rapidly producing the disease. Then when the world is at his mercy, he started to produce Nano. However the production of God¡¯s Revenge exceeds the production of Nano by far. So unless people start to listen to him, more and more will suffer until he becomes the ruler of this country. No, world. Listen AJ, I¡¯ve been working secretly when I found a sample of God¡¯s Revenge on Mandorley¡¯s table. UNATO and Mandorley is just a cover up for Patton. Mandorley gets to be Patton¡¯s right-hand man when he becomes the ruler of the world.¡±

I do not remember what I did next. All I recall was the voice of Paul continuing.

¡°The only way we can stop this massacre is to expose Patton. And the only way to do that is to rescue Patton¡¯s daughter, and a few other key personnels locked up in the UNATO prison. Patton left them to be used as experiments and when finished, they are killed.¡±

I cannot believe it, but I had to go ahead. We opened the secret door which led to the basement that apparently only Paul knew of. A narrow passage led down to a door with a portable keypad. Paul bypassed the security and we crouched as we walked through. We took out the guards on either side with our silent pistols. The next door had a similar setup but this time Paul was unable to go through. Instead, he deliberately entered the wrong numbers and when the guard came out checking what was going on Paul slit his throat while I shot the other guard running away to set the alarm.

We entered the enormous room which seemed like the main hall of a palace. And what I saw confirmed what Paul told me. The room was filled with boxes of God¡¯s Revenge. And a small amount of Nano. Then, the alarm went off without a warning. I realized there was another guard hiding while we took the other two out. The room was filled with the annoying sound of the siren. Paul shot down the siren but it was too late. The sound of UNATO troops rushing towards us was loud enough to make a kid start crying.

¡°Here they come¡± Paul said almost without any hint of fear as he pulled out his plasma rifle. While I stuck to my assault rifle.

DOOM! DOOM! DOOM! Came the sound of the footsteps, then suddenly it stopped. The silence was deafening.

It seemed an eternity for them to open the door, and when they did, the scent of blood filled the sky. We shot down countless troops but they kept on coming. We were running out of clips. Just when it got critical, my mind clicked.

¡°I¡¯m gonna shoot the boxes!¡± I screamed as loud as I could trying to make it audible over the sound of gunshots and roars of pain.

Paul acknowledged what I was about to do. He covered me while I shot open the boxes which contained the deadly disease. Almost immediately the enemy soldiers started to fall like leaves. We, of course, as agents had Nano injected into our body before every mission. Treading through the countless bodies we went into the next room.

The room erupted with cheers as the hostages held by UNATO realized their freedom. And then I saw her. Sarah Patton, the most beautiful girl in the world, sat there glumly in the cell. She was pale, but she was still a gem. She looked up, and saw me, and weakly smiled.

So I guess the story ends here. Patton was executed, and the world is beginning to restore law and order. Paul is still an agent working for some secret organization. He said he just could not get enough. While I, I am going to France, where Sarah is waiting for me.

I went to Paul¡¯s apartment for the last time picking up some memorabilias. I hugged him and bided farewell. Amazingly it was the first time we hugged since we joined UNATO. The car flew by, in it was a man who looked a bit like David Mandorley. Next thing I know I was on the ground, red patches appeared on my chest. Paul ran down to me and I whispered the name of the killer to him. He nodded with a hint of tears in his eyes. I felt no pain as I closed my eyes and what I saw in my mind was truly astounding¡ Sarah¡ sarah¡ s¡a¡

Thailand Today

Today, we would like to talk about Thailand, a booming country in southeast Asia. Due to the brevity of this talk we will only give a brief overview of the geography, historic background, religion and weather, and conclude with the Current Economic Stability of Thailand.

Geographically the kingdom of Thailand coverings an area of 514,000 square kilometers and lies in the heart of Southeast Asia roughly equidistant between India and China. It borders Burma to the West, North Laos to the North, Northeast Cambodia in the east and Malaysia in the South. Its population is currently 61.5 million.

In order to let people have a general impression about Thailand, I will say a few words about this Kingdom¡¦s fascinating historic background. Thailand is an island country; the unified Thai kingdom was established in the mid-14th century. It was known as Siam until 1. Of the multiple conflicts which have taken place in South East Asia Thailand has never been ruled or under jurisdiction by any European power. The only major shift of power in the last century was a bloodless revolution in 1 which led to a constitutional monarchy. Additionally, during World War an alliance was formed with Japan. After the war Thailand realized an alliance with the US would better suit its demands.

Thailand is one of the largest practicing Buddhist countries in the world. This national religion is Theravada Buddhism, a branch of Hinayana Buddhism, which is practiced by more than 0% of all Thais. About 10 million of whom live in the capital city of Bangkok.

Thailand has a warm tropical climate affected by an annual monsoon or rainy season from June to October. The rest of the year is mostly dry and the temperature averages between 75 to degrees Fahrenheit, with the highest temperatures from march to may and the lowest in December and January. This weather enrich many kinds of tropical fruits and crops.

Thailand¡¦s economy has its own unique characteristics. Although an early dependence on agriculture was the basis of the economic stability, the economy now rides on a strategic mix of manufacturing and service-based industries because of scarce natural recourses. In terms of foreign exchange, tourism continues to provide the biggest source of revenue with an average of over 6,000,000 visitors per year since 15. The other leading economic stabilizers are the textile and garment manufacturing industries and the large quantity of high quality rice which is exported every year. It is important to mention that over 5% of the Thailand¡¦s economy is controlled by overseas Chinese, that intensively builds up a strong relationship between these two countries in trading and doing business together, growing together.

What¡¦s more, exporting and tourism are the chief reliance of Thailand. Thailand has perhaps produced the most dramatic shift in it economy in the past fifteen years of all the Southeast Asian countries. Over the past six years the country¡¦s economy has grown an average of some 8% and is expected to maintain this rate of growth over the next two to three.

Growth in the financial sector has paralleled that of industry and commerce in general with the establishment in 10 of the stock exchange of Thailand and expansion and strengthening of financial institutions. International investment particularly in the manufacturing sector has been substantially encouraged by the board of investment which grants tax concession and other privileges to suitable applicants.

To sum up, Thailand strives towards their goals of establishing the country as a regional financial and manufacturing hub. visitors to this still fascinating land will no doubt contend themselves with the excellent value this economic tiger offers as a tourist playground.

› alien•ation noun [U] Many immigrants suffer from a sense of alienation

When human beings sense, see, think of their surroundings as something very apart from themselves it is called alienation. Everyone has at one point felt that he was an outsider. And some may have felt the unpleasantness of standing in a cold street looking through the window at a happy community. Many teenagers today feel that they are from a different culture. Their parents have no idea of how they feel and why they behave the way they do. But for teenagers this will all pass; they will look upon it as a phase in their life.

But there is another kind of alienation the kind that is not a phase. It is not easy to live in a society where different cultures have to live next to each other. It takes time, effort and resources before it can happen in peace and harmony. The situation is even more poignant when a group feels alienated. The problem is often just swept under the carpet and other issues are being discussed. The more you try to hide the problem the stronger it will knock on your door one day, and the consequence can be harder to repair.

An example of two cultures living side by side exists in Canada. Here is a cultural double vision. A French society living next to an English society two nationalities, two languages, two cultures have to live with each other. Margaret Atwood has written three poems where this conflict is visible. She belongs to the English speaking part of Quebec. According to the first-person this provides a sense of conflict in her.

Millions of people daily battle to lose weight, but what happens when it gets out of hand? Eating disorders are very serious illnesses, which usually occur in teenage girls. Anorexia Nervosa is where a normal weight person diets becoming 15% or more underweight, but still feels fat so continues to starve themselves (Myers 445). Bulimia Nervosa is another eating disorder, but in this case they overeat and followed is vomiting, laxative use, fasting, or excessive exercising (Myers 445). Now that the eating disorders are explained, let’s explore why they occur. What makes girls starve themselves until they end up in the hospital? Well, some factors are believed to be family environment, genetics, and popular culture.

Some believe the environment or atmosphere a child grows up can cause eating disorders. Those who have families who suffer from alcoholism, obesity, and depression can subject them more to eating disorders. Also, those who grow up in competitive families and receive too much criticism may be more susceptive to eating disorders. Sometimes parents can be too hard on children and this can result in not only eating disorders, but also low self-esteem and depression. Although, family environment is not the only factor that may contribute to eating disorders.

Genetics is another contributor to eating disorders some researches believe it may be inherited. I believe family environment and genetics go hand-in-hand because it forces a person to be more prone to these disorders. Maybe those who have eating disorders genetically inherited a lack of neurotransmitters putting them at a greater risk than the normal person. Genetics may not be a known cause at this time, but it is definitely an interesting concept that we will hopefully find more correlation.

Now we come to what I believe is the biggest leading cause to eating disorders and that is popular culture. Hollywood flaunts these stick figured models on the red carpet, and a teenage girl automatically thinks, “Wow look at Colista Flockhart she’s a size zero that’s what I should look like in order to be pretty.” When this is far from the truth and in all reality the size zero models are the abnormal ones. Hollywood needs to be held accountable and tell these teenage girls the truth. A person doesn’t have to be a size zero to be beautiful and it is not healthy or worth it.

Marketing strategies for large and small companies are constantly evolving to keep up with new technology. For the past ten years or so, marketers have been hard at work defining the way business touch their target markets through the use of the Internet. The Internet has become a tool for marketers to collect data and analyze their target markets for possible opportunities or changes in the market place. Within this same time period there has been an explosion in the dot com business, but more recently we have seen many dot com companies fail because of the uncertainties of the Internet. However, there are a few companies that, in my opinion, have a solid business plan and the use of the Internet.

Yahoo Inc. is a marketing powerhouse when it comes to the Internet. Their concept is simple, but very effective. They provide the general public with a free search engine and charge companies to advertise on their web site. Some investors have questioned this business model because of how vulnerable their revenues are to advertising spending. Advertising spending is also one of the first areas in business that is cut when there is an economic slow down.

The advantage that Yahoo has is their branding. Millions of people use Yahoo as a source of information. As more and more people sign on to the web, Yahoo has positioned itself to be on their desktops. Because of the increasing traffic to the Yahoo sites, small and large companies are using Yahoo as part of there marketing strategy. This gives these companies instant exposure to millions of people and an instant Internet presence.

Additionally, Yahoo offers resources as a full service Internet marketing company. They are now offering just about everything for business to build an Internet presence. Services that Yahoo provides include Internet Marketing, Web design, Hosting and consulting. They have proven that their web site has high volume of traffic and their web site is designed for the user to stay within Yahoo web site for their Internet session.

The majority of web site promotion services are considered as Pay and Pray services. This is where a form is filled out, give your URL and a credit card number. You pay and pray that you get your moneys worth of work. Yahoo provides powerful Internet traffic statistics based on data they collect during the use of its web sites. For example, business may want to know Which key words work? How many hits can you expect? What will be your cost of sales and how much can you expect to sell? If youre not selling, why? What are your competitors doing and how can you keep ahead? What are the risks and benefits? Marketing strategies should cater to local, national and even international efforts.

The Internet is a global market place, so now more than ever, even the smallest business must have an Internet strategy. Companies like Yahoo, America Online, e-Bay are just a few that have millions of members and people that use their services on a regular basis. For a company to get noticed, they should partner up with a company that have continued user growth and increased visibility.
