Lancing Story

Treatment

Lucy Collins, and her 4 month old baby, Jessica (refered to as Jess for short)gh, move into a home with a couple in their late 50s, Henry and Margret Peters. They live beside the sea in Lancing. Their son, Anton has moved away to Basingstoke to persue a career in chartered accountancy. The girl has gotten a job and needs to be living with others that can watch over her baby. She is working in insurance. We soon see that the couple, especially Margret are missing their son and so are looking to someone to parent. Lucy feels welcome with them and finds it a secure place to settle.

During conversation with Henry, Lucy learns that her room had been rented out to another young lady called Sophie Woods. Henry complains that the girls dog used to mess up the house and that compared to her baby was far worse. He tells her little information about Sophie except that she loved her dog but then one day it ran away. She didnt get over it and begin to cling to the dogs blankets. She works in a fraud investigation company. Henry mentions to her that some of Sophies things are in the corner in a box. Lucy takes a look and Henry offers to let her have some of the things if she likes. Lucy declines, and notices a photograph album and goes to have a look. Henry quickly takes it away.

She recieves a dirty look from a conservative person as she gets on a bus with her baby. When she returns home she walks in on Margret crying over a photo album. She quickly puts it away and covers it up. That evening Lucy notices Henry thowing out mail that was meant for Sophie (sees Sophies name for the first time).

She begins speaking to her neighbour in the mornings on the way to work. He says the elderly couple are really nice, when asked about Sophie but says he often saw her wandering about the seafront clinging to the dogs old blankets after it had died.

At work Lucy is begining to get closer her Scottish superviser, David. They flirt and she tells him a little of herself.

That night Lucy wakes up to the vague distant sound of a dog scratching and padding over carpet. She turns on the light and the sound fades. She checks on Jessica, shes fine.

At work she continues to flirt with David and he invites her to dinner. She asks Margret and Henry to look after her baby for the evening and they agree. David picks her up and they go to his house. She has dinner with him and they begin to bond. Hint hint wink wink nudge nudge saynomore saynomore.

Upon returning home she finds Henry and Margret acting strange. Henry is sitting in the kitchen alone and Lucy find Margret quickly exiting Lucys room. Margret says that she was seeing to Jessica whod been crying. When Lucy goes into the room Jessica is asleep.

She wakes up in the night as before, a very slight sound of a dog again but much more subtler. She goes to check on Jessica but she is gone! Lucy races downstairs in a panic but then finds she can hear Jessica crying in the distance. She races outside (putting on a coat) following the sound of the crying. She ends up on a pile of large rocks on a beach with large dark gaps between them. The baby can still be heard crying down between crevises. As she climbs down towards the darkness where she thinks her baby is a dog snaps at her from the darkness.

The next we see of Lucy she is relaxing with Henry and Margret whilst feeding Jessica, we are led to believe that the previous events were mearly a dream. She goes to work where she is greeted by David and told that she may be getting a promotion. She is overjoyed. When she arrives home she finds mail for Sophie waiting outside her door. She takes it down to Margret and asks her why Henry left it there. Margret gives her a strange look and apologises.

Back at work she finds out she is being promoted to insurance investigation department. It appears as if David had something to do with the promotion but it is never elaborated. She agrees to go out with David again the following day.

That night she wakes up as before to the sound of a dog barking. Its coming from outside. She relaxes, but then sees that her baby is missing. At that moment she begins to hear the child crying and screaming from outside. She grabs her coat and runs outside. She can see in the distance a dog snapping at the baby. She grabs a spade and hits the dog, who yelps and dies. She notices that her neighbours gates open. She takes her baby inside, but guilt at killing her neighbours dog gets to her so she goes out and buries it.

The next day she arrives at Davids in a state of distress. She has Jessica with her as she didnt trust Margret and Henry to look after her. She explains a few of the things that have been happening (taking care to not appear crazy) she explains about the photo album that they seem so protective of. He tells her to try and look inside it and to call him.

She goes home and looks in the photo album, there we see pictures of Anton. She goes to speak to the neighbour and asks about Anton. He says he moved away a while back and that there was nothing odd about it. His dog walks in, she pets and asks about his other dog. He says he doesnt have one.

She goes back home at finds more mail at her door for Sophie. She examines it and finds that she now has the same job. She angrily phones David and asks him why he got her that job, and accuses him of fucking with her mind. She slams the phone down and races upstairs. At this point we should be noticing that about her person are articles that could be seen in the box at the begining. She enters her room to comfort her crying baby, she picks in up, but as shes holding it realises that shes not holding her baby at all, but a clump of dirty blankets. The sound of crying fades. She races downstairs and begins screaming at Margret, demanding to know where her baby is. As she demands to know where her baby is, we flashback briefly to shots of her hitting the dog with the spade and burying it. Margret seems confused and asks Lucy to sit down. Lucy is agitated and reluctuant to calm down. Margret suddenly flips out and begins shouting at Lucy, saying shes had enough of Lucys shit. She says that she was willing to let someone like her into her house but shes not there to deal with her problems. She says shes not happy with having to look after Lucys dog and now shes lost it its not her responsibility. She says shes sorry the dogs but clinging to the blankets for days isnt gonna bring it back. Grow up Sophie!

At being called Sophie and talk of her dog going missing Lucy races out towards the grave of the dog, but the tide has gone over it. She begins to wade into the water crying for Jessica. Henry and Margret watch from their garden.

We have a few quiet shots around the house of where things have happened, and objects of Sophies. The camera passes a letter from a vet about her dog Jessie Finally the camera rests of a photograph which has allways been on Lucys desk of her with her dog. We hear distantly the sound of a baby crying. The End.

It seems that American students today strive to be accepted by their peers, teachers, and other authority figures. Although many may believe that students will rebel against any type of authority, students yearn to have that adult acceptance, from a parent, teacher, coach, relative, and so forth. It is not clear how many students in American society would truly do anything to get acceptance. Some might suggest that students will go to any length to get acceptance in American society. Others might argue that students really do not try for this acceptance. There are no conclusive studies to support either viewpoint, since students are not always willing to admit to what they have done for acceptance. Students trying to impress their peers might admit to doing something that, in actuality, they have not. Students must learn to express themselves in a positive manner. Sports help students do this, as well as English classes that encourage self-expression and allow the students to find a positive outlet for the confusing adolescent years. Many teachers, however, remain blind to the true needs of their students. Without allowing students to learn to be individualistic, America risks raising terrorists and people who will not contribute to society. We do not want students to grow up thinking that everything will be handed to them on a silver platter, because, of course, this will not happen. However, students with IEPs will probably think that their disability will get them anywhere in life, although many employers do not even know what an IEP is, and certainly would not make accommodations for students with special needs. In conclusion, I hope this essay has shown you the importance of making sure that students in todays society know that they are accepted by everyone they meet, not just those people that happen to love them because they have to.

The Awakening was a very interesting book. Even though I thought the opposite in the begging when I first went to and got the book. I was really amazed at the way the author Kate Chopin describes the role of women during the time the book was written. I love the way the author expresses Edna Pontellier’s desire and achievement of self ownership and her husband’s ownership over her. There are a number of points stressed by Chopin that I found to be very interesting and correct.

Kate Chopins The Awakening tells the story of Edna Pontellier, a Southern wife and mother. At the time this novel was published, women did as they were expected by society. They were expected to be good daughters, good wives, and good mothers. A woman was expected to move from the protection of her fathers roof to the protection of her husband. Edna did not fit this mold, and that eventually leads her husband to send for a doctor. When her husband does this Edna Pontellier says words, which define The Awakening, I dont want anything but my own way. That is wanting a good deal, of course, when you have to trample upon the lives, the hearts, the prejudices of others - but no matter

At first, Edna is married and seems vaguely satisfied with her life. However, she cannot find true happiness. Her awakening begins when a persistent young man named Robert begins encouraging her. Edna begins to respond to him with a passion she has never felt before. She begins to realize that she can play roles other than wife and mother. Throughout the book, Edna takes many steps to increase her independence. She sends her children away, she refuses to stay at home on Tuesdays , and she frequents races and parties. Unfortunately, her independence proves to be her downfall. Edna remains married, because divorce is unheard of. She wants to marry Robert, but he will not because it will disgrace her to leave her husband. No matter how much Edna exceeds social boundaries and despite what she wants, she is held down by the will of others. In todays world divorce, sadly, is very common, but in her time she would have been an outcast of her society. By the end of The Awakening, Edna feels like a possession of her husband, of her children, and of her society. The only solution she sees is to end her life, which she does by swimming out into the sea until her strength gives out.

Like most books there are certain points that I disliked or thought were unnecessary. I enjoyed the author’s discussion of hand although it would have been better had it not been interrupted by the history of women’s self ownership and their right to refuse marital sex. The essay begins talking about Edna’s hands receiving her rings, it then cuts to women’s right to abstain from sex with their husbands, cuts back to the two states of Edna’s hands, then goes on to talk about Edna withholding sex in the story. I feel this weakens the essay. This is one thing I would change about the essay.

The Awakening tells a story of independence, freedom, and will power unheard of during the times of its publication. It is a magnificent book that forces you to confront tough issues. It paints a picture of what goes through the mind of a person who loses hope. The Awakening tells us a story from the perspective of the oppressed. It is far more than another romance novel with a tragic ending. It is a book about the choices one will make to protect ones freedom.

The Catcher in the Rye is one of the most known pieces of literature in America. The story takes place mainly in New York City and the renowned school of Pency Prep. Holden Caulfield is the narrator and the main character in the story. He is telling the story after it has all happened in first person perspective. Although there is no climax to the story it is very interesting and a bit odd.

Holden is a 16 year old kid that has difficulty in school. He is not bad in English but the other four classes that he is taking at the school he is failing. It isn’t that he is mentally incapable of passing but is lazy and hates the idea of school. After many warnings from Dr. Thurmer the headmaster, he has been ostracized by the Pency Prep. Education program. Although he was not upset by this, he showed concern about his family’s reaction. From the time that he got kicked out of Pency to the time he returns home is an adventure.

Holden has one younger sister named Phoebe that he completely adores. He has an older brother named D.B. that lives in Hollywood and writes scripts. Holden is a little disappointed by that because he hates the movies. D.B. used to write books, mostly comedy but now solely writes movies. Holden used to have another brother but he had passed away from leukemia in 146.

Holden has an eighteen year old roommate Stradlater that is a jock. He is the captain of the basketball team and is very popular. Holden is known but not to the extent that Stradlater is. He is also a partier and on this particular day has a date with Jane Gallagher. Jane also happens to be an old friend of Holden’s, yet he is not upset. He is more curious then anything else. Since Stradlater is leaving he does not have time to write a descriptive story assigned to him by his English teacher. He asks Holden to do it for him and he agrees. He told Holden to write about a house and it has to be very, very descriptive.

Later that night when Stradlater returns, Holden is waiting for him with a bunch of questions about him and his old friend Janes date. Holden gets a bit edgy and get on Stradlater’s nerves. Then when Stradlater asks where the assignment was that he was supposed to write for him, Holden said it was on the desk. When Stradlater picked it up and realized that it was not on a house and on a baseball glove they started to argue. Holden had written a whole composition on his late brother Allies’ baseball mitt. He wrote about it because it had poems written all over it and Holden could write a good description on it. It was the only thing that he could think of at the time where he could write a enough to fulfill the requirements of the assignment. The argument eventually turned in a fist fight and Holden was knocked to the ground by Stradlater.

Late that night Holden wanted to leave so he finished packing his bags, which was mostly done already because he knew he had to leave. It was only Saturday and Holden couldn’t go home until Thursday because his parents didn’t know that he got kicked out of school. The letter that Dr. Thurmer wrote would not be received by his parents until Wednesday the latest and Holden did not want to be home when his parents would get it because they would obviously be angry. He wanted time for them to cool. Holden left Pency and decided that he would go on the train to the city and stay in a hotel for a few days. He could afford it and he thought it would be the best thing for him at that moment.

This is where the adventure of Holden Caulfield begins.

Attitude maybe defined as the way of thinking of an person. Attitude is an intrinsic value that is contingent upon myriads of factors such as the situation, or maybe the predicament for that matter, in which the individual finds himself in. Attitude maybe inherent in an individual but as the scope of ones life subsumes the world around him, the attitude tends to change radically.

Every human being is gifted with a basic quality of orienting himself with respect to the surroundings. This is called adaptation. The process of adapting to the surroundings need not be only physical. In fact during the process of doing so, the mindset of the individual is altered significantly and thus is his attitude. For example consider an individual who is living a lavish life in a big mansion in some city. Suppose he has to move to a smaller house, may be somewhere in the country side, then he adapts himslef to the compact situation. In the process the same individual who would have complained about some trivial shortcomings of his mansion, would learn to live with the same in his smaller house. This shows a marked change in the attitude or the mindset of the person.

The other, and probably one of the most significant factor, would be the cultural differences. Culture is something that varies with region, race and society. A person with a fixed attitude would not be able to blend himself with a new culture in which he is living. The point that is coming to light here is that even if an individual has an attitude developed through internal characteristics, it becomes redundant due to the extrinsic factors. For instance, the number of students who come to the US every year have to change their attitude and the way they think of things to better suit their surroundings. It would become almost impossible to blend in if they carry forward their native attitude.

A subordinate factor to the above mentioned would be age. A persons attitude changes with age. It would be very clear that a person would not have the same attitude when he is 0 and when he is at 40. At 0 an individual would have a carefree attitude and tends to take things for granted. However at 40, things are a lot different and the same attitude would put one in an imbroglio. When responsibilities are thrust upon someone there is bound to be what we can call an attitude-adaptation.

Attitude is a mirror of the surroundings and the situation in which a person lives. The closer you get to the reflection, the clearer the image is. Hence, if you know your surroundings better, the better you can suit your attitude so as to be in accord with them. Inherent attitude tends to become redundant as the various factors around a person change. Conclusively, attitude is solely determined by extrinsic factors.

Late in 10, following the death of Margaret, Maid of Norway, (granddaughter of Alexander III, himself killed in an accident in 186) a new period of ‘perplexity’ began in the Kingdom of Scotland. The Maid, who had been accepted by the Magnates (on paper at least) as the heir to the throne of Scotland, had left the Kingdom she had never seen on the brink of a power struggle between two rival factions for the crown- the Bruce and Balliol families. In a bid to avoid Civil War, Edward I was accepted to judge the competitors and choose a King. Although 14 claims were submitted, only four ever stood any real chance of success- the claims of Balliol (the favourite), Bruce (also strongly backed), Count Florence of Holland and John de Hastings. This essay argues that Balliol’s claim of primogeniture was legally far superior and the foundation of the Bruce claim was nothing more than opportunism.

All four candidates for the throne were legitimately descended through Henry of Northumberland, son of King David I. All but Florence Count of Holland were descended through David, Earl of Huntingdon, the Count being descended through Ada, David’s older sister. Florence whose argument went against the claims of all of the other three, based his claim on Earl David giving up his own claim to the throne in return for the lands of Gairoch in the north-east of Scotland. He alleged that the then King, (William) had named his sister Ada and her heirs as first in line of succession should his own line fail (as it had with the death of the Maid of Norway.). If proved this would defeat the claims of both Bruce and Balliol.

John de Hastings, the grandson of Earl David of Huntingdon’s third daughter, had no real chance of selection as King as he was further from Earl David than either Bruce or Balliol. Hastings claimed that Scotland was not in fact a Kingdom at all but a fief or feudal dependency of the King of England and therefore should be subject to the laws of feudalism This would mean that Scotland would be divided equally between Balliol, Bruce and Hastings. According to Prestwich, Weyland (a former of legal officer of Edward’s) advised that Scotland be divided in this way. They pointed to the facts that “the kings of Scots were neither crowned nor anointed and drew attention to other grave defects of Scottish kingship.” This argument of partibility, which, in my opinion, could be seen as being both technically strong in law and opportunism, is thought to have failed because it was too bitter a pill for the Scottish magnates to swallow (especially when coming from an English baron), as it depended on the premise that the Realm of Scotland never existed.

The impartibility of Scotland was an argument used consistently by John Balliol and initially by Bruce. John Balliol’s claim was the simplest and therefore the most convincing. It argued that Scotland should be given to a single man (impartible) and that Balliol, “as the senior descendant of Earl David by the strict rule of primogeniture, was the true heir to the Crown and office of King” . There is a general consensus among historians that Balliol’s was “the best claim” in terms of the law of feudalism, where the land goes to the direct heir of the line of the oldest daughter of Earl David.

His claim was countered by Robert Bruce, Lord of Annandale, (grandfather of the Robert Bruce who eventually seized the throne of Scotland in 106 and defeated the English at Bannockburn in 114). Like Balliol, Bruce argued initially that Scotland was impartible and that he should be the King. Bruce’s primary claim was based on his being the nearest male relative to David Earl of Huntingdon- his grandson- while Balliol was only his great-grandson. This claim did have legal basis, founded on Imperial or Roman Law. This ruling, passed down by the Holy Roman Empire, still had precedence in Germany, Austria and Northern Italy. In this sense Bruce’s claim could claim to be strong in law. This is certainly the stance taken by Duncan who argued that Imperial Law should have been used to decide an heir, and he argues that the reason Edward refused to do this was in order to reserve England’s right to escheat the Kingdom of Scotland (where the feudal holding returns to the overlord if there is no obvious heir) should the need arise in the future, thus contradicting his decision over which legal custom to use.

Bruce also claimed that he should have the crown as he was named heir to the throne by the then childless Alexander II, as his nearest male relative, Devorguilla having not yet given birth to John Balliol. This, however, is an obviously flawed argument, simply because it was no longer relevant. Bruce had already been superseded by the future Alexander III as heir to the throne of Alexander II and so there was nothing to say that he could not be superseded again. Just because he was the heir at one point did not mean that he would be heir for life. Compared with Balliol’s single, simple claim this Bruce opportunism diminished the legality of their primary claim of Imperial Law.

It is thought that from the very beginning of the Norham process Bruce knew that his claim was legally weaker than Balliol’s and that he was already seeking a ‘back-up’ plan. He began to look more closely at the claim of Count Florence of Holland. The Earl of Gloucester claimed to have witnessed an agreement where, in the event of Balliol defeating Bruce’s primary claim, Bruce would support the claim of Florence. Then if the Count were to successfully defeat Balliol he would be given Bruce’s English lands and Bruce would be given the throne. However, in the end this did not matter as a few days before Edward’s final judgement, Florence mysteriously withdrew his claim. In 157, Grant and Simpson claimed that Florence had probably been bought off by a Balliol bribe despite there being a lack of solid evidence for this.

As expected, it was declared that feudal law would apply, favouring the argument of Balliol and thus throwing out the Bruce claim of Imperial Law. This was announced on November 6th, and Florence withdrew his claim around the 14th, leaving Bruce with no chance of getting the throne. There followed the final example of Bruce opportunism. In a much scandalised volte face, he abandoned his claim of impartibility and gave his backing to Hastings claim in the hope of inheriting at least a third of the Kingdom. This complete U-turn by the Bruces casts doubt on the legality of Bruce’s original claim of impartibility. In the end, Edward declared Scotland impartible, throwing out the primary claim of Hastings and the ‘eleventh hour’ claim of Bruce. While Edward’s decision is commendable in that it preserved Scotland as a Kingdom and avoided a potentially ruinous civil war between the three inheritors, it was made for purely selfish reasons. If Scotland was declared partible, it could have been argued that so was England, should Edward or his heirs die childless.

It is my conclusion that it is historically accurate to argue that while Bruce appears to have had a degree of legality in his initial claim of Imperial Law, this was tarnished by the “ingenuity, self contradiction and....chicanery” he showed later when it was obvious he would fail. In fact, it is probably true that Bruce was showing the legal frailty of his claim before the Norham process even began. At some point in the years 10/11 Bruce sent a letter to Edward I, stating that his claim was superior to that of Balliol and claiming he had the support of the seven earls. This appears to have been an ancient Scottish tradition but is irrelevant because Bruce fails to mention the names of five of these seven earls, leading modern historians to dismiss this as an “ingenious” piece of opportunism but probably a fake intended to make it appear that Bruce had the strongest case. It goes without saying that if Bruce really did have the strongest case then there would be no need for a fake. Therefore, I repeat my argument that from the very beginning, it appears that even Robert Bruce himself knew that his claim to be the rightful King of Scotland was legally very weak and nothing more than opportunism.

Communism Invasion of the Body Snatchers

Invasion of the Body Snatchers was a remarkable film, made in 156. Set in a small California town, residents seem to be suffering from a mass hysteria; various people feel that their relatives are not actually their relatives. Things start becoming more mysterious when Mile’s friend Jack finds an indistinct, motionless body in his house (on the pool table) that later vanishes. Jack and his wife, stay at Miles house, along with Miles friend Becky. At night in Miles greenhouse, the four of them discover giant pod seeds that start to develop identical copies of all of them. Jack and his wife leave to go get help, but they come back changed into emotionless replicas of their former selves. Most of the town has already been changed into the emotionless pod people. Then Miles and Becky are chased by a crowd of pod people. They get away from the crowd for a while, but Miles leaves Becky for a minute and comes back to find her changed into a pod person. He runs to the highway where he tries to warn people, who think he is crazy or drunk. Dr. Miles Bennell, runs to a hospital in the next town where he is thought to be insane after telling them the story about the pod people. The doctor seems not to believe Miles outlandish story. A hospital worker reports pulling an accident victim from under huge pod seeds, and the doctor realizes Miles has

been telling the truth. At the end of the film you see the doctor calling the FBI. This film was made during the time (150’s) of the Red Scare. The pods represent a communist threat.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers supports the idea of American citizens being paranoid during a period of the Communist scare. At the beginning of the film a little boy, Jimmy, and his grandmother ran into Dr. Mile’s office frantically. Jimmy has the idea that his mother isn’t really his mother, and Mile’s just thinks it’s an illusion. Also Becky’s sister Wilma thought that her Uncle Iran wasn’t really here uncle. Wilma thinks her uncle remembers, thinks, and speaks the same way he always did, the only difference she sees is that he is emotionless. Miles and Becky think that Wilma is just having a hallucination or is delusional. Dr. Miles says, “A boy says his mother isn’t his mother and a woman says her uncle isn’t her uncle” (Invasion of the Body Snatchers). People were paranoid about who was Communist; some people thought that our government might get over run by the communists. Senator Joseph McCarthy states “When a great democracy is destroyed it will not be because of enemies without, but rather because of enemies within” (88). In the movie this is represented by mothers and relatives putting pods in with their children while they slept, which symbolizes the idea that the enemies are within. Senator McCarthy also says “In my opinion the State

Department, which is one of the most important government departments, is thoroughly infested with Communists” (8). This represents how McCarthy and many people thought the communists were invading their government. Jimmy and Wilma both represent the paranoia people were experiencing in America at this time. Wilma and Jimmy both made miraculous recoveries, by the next morning they were okay and did not think that their relatives were different anymore. Wilma and Jimmy both conformed to the emotionless state that many other people in their town had already done.

The pod people in the film represent communists, because they conform to be emotionless creatures that have over taken the former individual. During this time many Americans had the idea that communists were all the same (all emotionless). President Eisenhower says; “we must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes” (). This signifies how Americans did not want to conform and all be the same, they liked the fact that they were all individuals. The pod people symbolized the idea that everyone is the same and has no individual identity. Throughout the film the town’s people kept saying “you will be one of us” (Invasion of the Body Snatchers). The town’s people represented the communist army trying to infiltrate into the American system and try to get everyone to conform and be the same.

The pod people replicated very quickly throughout the film, which symbolizes the rapid growth of communism. Senator Joseph McCarthy says “in less than 6 years the odds have changed from to 1 in our favor to 8 to 5 against us. This indicates the swiftness of the tempo of Communist victories and American defeats in the cold war” (88). To represent the rapid growth of communism, the movie depicts how people are changed while they are sleeping over night. Towards the end of the movie when Miles and Becky are running away from the pod people, Miles leaves Becky alone for a minute and she falls asleep. During the short while that she is asleep she is over taken by a pod and has become one of the pod people. This signifies the rapid growth of the Communists, defeating and desensitizing individuals. While Miles is standing on the highway he yells “They’re after you there after all of us” (Invasion of the Body Snatchers). The comment made by him represents how you have to protect yourself against the communism, since it was spreading fast.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers symbolized the paranoia issues Americans had during the period of the communist scare. The movie was a metaphor for the Red Scare, which revealed the fact that communism, was a real threat and that it was rapidly growing. People were scared that communism was going to over take, just like the pod people did. The people of America were scared that if communism took over, their freedoms and liberties would be gone. The pod people were emotionless creatures that symbolize the conformity of communism.

Leaving my country and coming to America was not easy. As much as I was thrilled to finally see New York City, I felt like a traitor leaving behind Poland, the country of my birth. Just before I left, The Solidarity Union managed to overthrow the communist regime and Poland was in the difficult stage of transition into democracy. Despite economic difficulties, Poles were overjoyed with their freedom. Nobody complained about empty shelves in stores, because we all knew that eventually the economy would improve.

Now was the time to show one’s patriotism by enduring the difficulties and helping to restore free Poland. It was definitely not the time to leave. My parents, however, decided otherwise when they received long awaited green cards from American Embassy in Warsaw. We packed our belongings and set on the journey to the United States of America, the land of freedom and opportunity.

Manhattan looked magnificent in its splendor but I hated everything else the food, the customs, and the seemingly rude forwardness of Americans. I wanted everything to be exactly as it was in Poland, safe and familiar. I distanced myself from all Americans with whom I felt I had nothing in common. Even though I now lived here, I was a Pole at heart and vowed never to forsake my allegiance to my country of birth.

As years went by, little by little, I submerged myself in American culture. The food began to taste better, the customs made sense, and I began to appreciate the sincerity and friendliness of American people. It was no longer “me and them,” now it was “us”. I began to realize that it was hypocritical of me to dissociate myself as a Pole and at the same time live off American land and take advantage of all benefits available to American citizens.

I began to ponder whether I could become an American citizen without relinquishing my Polish citizenship. Many people elected to be citizens of more than one countries but I deeply felt that to be a citizen of two countries meant to be a citizen of no country. What would happen if the two countries, one was a citizen of, were at war? Which country’s side would I take? I was not able to answer those questions so I put aside my plans to become an American citizen.

Then, the unthinkable happened. On September 11, 001 terrorist attacked my country. It is really difficult to describe the rage I felt when this happened. I was shocked and incredulous to learn that some people actually hated the Americans. I felt deep solidarity with the rest of American people. That day I stopped being a Pole and became an American in my heart.

In ‘Othello’, women seem to be portrayed as inferior to men in almost every way, and throughout the play there are several instances of misogyny and female abuse. There are three main female characters in the play-Desdemona, Emilia and Bianca. I am going to look at their roles within the play to find out what role women play in ‘Othello’.

Desdemona is the main female character within the play, and the most important. We first hear about her in the first scene, where we find out that she has run away with Othello and married him, against her father’s wishes. This straight away shows us something about Desdemona. She is very stubborn, with a clear idea of what she wants. Because she has not had her father’s blessing with her marriage, she will get no support from him, so if things go wrong, she is out on her own. He will probably disown her. She would have to be stubborn to have gone through with the marriage knowing what Brabantio would do when he found out. She would also have had to have been very sure that Othello was who she wanted to marry, because if he wasn’t right for her and it went wrong, she would have no one to turn to-her father wouldn’t support her.

Desdemona is abused or mistreated by four male characters in the play. Her father Brabantio doesn’t know her well-he calls her “a maiden never bold of spirit”, and talks about her as someone who is frightened of Othello. His description of her is the opposite of the person we see in the senate scene. We can see from this that he doesn’t know what his own daughter is like. He rejects her when she needs somewhere to stay while Othello is gone and the Duke suggests she stay at his house. Desdemona is neglected and rejected by her father. Roderigo wants to have an affair with her-he wants her for sex, and tries to buy her with jewels, treating her like a whore by trying to pay her for sex. Iago uses her mercilessly to further his own ends-he tells Othello to kill her. He treats her like a tool, something to be used for his own ends. Othello hits her, falsely accuses her of having an affair and then doesn’t listen to her protests that she is faithful. In the end Othello kills her.

In the play Desdemona is always in one of two parts. Sometimes she is independent and determined-she goes against her father’s wishes to marry Othello and protects Cassio. At other times she becomes a victim. When Othello calls her “that cunning whore of Venice”, she doesn’t respond, and when he hits her in public, she protests “I have not deserved this” but then goes back to being an obedient wife, defending his authority over her to Emilia at the start of Act 4 Scene .

I think Desdemona also plays the role of the idealist with her relationship with Othello, thinking that nothing can hurt them as they are in love. This role falls away later on as she realises things have gone wrong.

Bianca has something in common with Desdemona, as male characters in ‘Othello’ mistreat her, like Iago and Cassio. Cassio has some fondness for her, but sees her only as a ‘bauble’, a thing not a person. She has genuine love for Cassio. But he sees himself as one of her ‘customers’ (suggesting she is a prostitute) and this makes the relationship unhappy. Bianca can see that Cassio does not love her-at one point he tells her to go away because he doesn’t want anyone to see her with him. In Act 4 Scene 1 he tells Iago “She haunts me in every place.” like she is an annoying thing that he can’t get rid of. I think this shows he mistreats her by treating her like a thing instead of a person.

Iago also abuses her. When Cassio has just been attacked and injured, he verbally attacks Bianca, saying that she had something to do with the attack on Cassio, “Gentlemen all, I do suspect this trash to be a party in this injury.” Bianca is innocent, but Iago accuses her to save himself.

I think that Bianca plays two roles in the play. To Cassio, she plays the role of the ‘trophy girlfriend’, a pretty bauble he can show off. To everyone else she seems to be the victim. Iago and Cassio both abuse her, and even Emilia abuses her in Act 5 Scene 1 where she calls her a “strumpet”.

Emilia plays a different role from Desdemona, as while Desdemona is a romantic in terms of love, Emilia is very cynical. We see this in Act Scene 4, where she says of men, “they are all but stomachs, and we all but food.” She knows she is just ‘food’ for Iago, kept around until she becomes an inconvenience. She also has a more realistic view of the world than Desdemona. In Act 4 Scene Emilia and Desdemona are talking together about adultery. Desdemona is very na├»ve, and she says to Emilia, “Dost thou in conscience think…That there be women do abuse their husbands in such gross kind?” She can’t believe that there are women who would have affairs. Emilia says, “who would not make her husband a cuckold to make him a monarch? I would venture purgatory for’t.” Emilia is saying she would commit adultery for a prize e.g. to make Iago a ruler.

Iago is obviously a misogynist. In Act Scene 1 he says about women, “You are pictures out of doors, bells in your parlours, wildcats in your kitchens, saints in your injuries, devils being offended, players in your housewifery, and housewives in your beds.” I think Iago’s opinion of women is that they should keep quiet and obey men.

Emilia’s role is a woman who will obey her husband (she gets the handkerchief for him, because she knows he wants it) and thinks that it is right that she obeys him, but she is far more cynical about the role of women in the world. Later on in the play, as Othello accuses Desdemona of adultery, she takes on the role of defending Desdemona, saying she would never have done such a thing.

I think that the women in ‘Othello’ have almost no power-they are always portrayed in relation to the male characters, who can do whatever they like to them-even kill them. If the women are thought to be having an affair, the men get very angry, but if the men were having an affair, I don’t think people would be so shocked.

In Euripides’ Bacchae and Sophocles’ Antigone, piety is a major theme consistent among the play. Piety among the Ancient Greeks was concerned with proper human behavior towards the Gods. It was more about knowing your place, which is not greater than the Gods, and showing respect towards them. In both the Bacchae and Antigone, the main characters, Pentheus & Dionysus and Creon & Antigone respectively, are placed at odds with one another. In this battle of characters in both plays, one is more devout to the State while the other is more pious to the Gods. In this same sense, both plays are consistent with their conceptions of how humans are supposed to act toward the divine, and the subsequent penalties that result from this defiance of the Gods.

The pious characters in the Bacchae and Antigone, were Dionysus and Antigone respectively. Dionysus himself was a God, born of Semele and Zeus. At his inception, he was denied as a God from his mother’s sisters, and this denial of Dionysus as a legitimate God continued into his cousin Pentheus’ rule of Thebes. This of course angered Dionysus, for this proved a lack of respect to the God. Dionysus set out to prove his status as a God, and punish those who did not believe in him.

Antigone was born of a family with a doomed fate. Her father was Oepipus, who was exiled from Thebes for killing his father and marrying his mother. Her two brothers both died slaying one another. The new King Creon, decided to bury one son with all the funeral rites and not the other. Antigone saw this as an injustice to her brother, and despite serious consequences of the King decided to bury her brother anyway. She saw virtue in being obedient to the Gods, and funeral rites were an important part of this.

Though coming from different circumstance, both Dionysus and Antigone were both honoring or attempting to honor the Gods by being pious toward them. Although Antigone didn’t intentionally set out to punish Creon, the way Dionysus attempted to punish Pentheus, both characters did provide the means to enact a punishment on both Pentheus and Creon for not being devout to the Gods.

Future of Management

Management has been around for a long time and there have been many different styles of management created over the years. There a many different functions of management. There are two different aspects of management there is a manager and a leader. Leadership plays an important role in management it provides the structure for management.

The future of management is far beyond anything we would have expected years ago. Management meaning the conducting or supervising of something. Conducting management means giving direction, management has no set direction because it changes with each individual and how they choose to lead. The future of management will be no different, as many different leadership styles will arrive in the management world. Why will there be so many different styles in the future? One reason is each leader brings there on since of style on how they want to conduct there business or organization. The future of management is far beyond anything we would have expected years ago.

There are two new tools to management that will keep growing with the future of management. One tool is technology a manner of accomplishing a task especially using technical processes, methods, or knowledge. The other tool is control, which give managers the power or authority to guide or manage. The two tools together are reasons why the future of management will continue to grow. Leadership will play a key role to the future if we do not have good leaders. Our future in management will not move forward to the 1st century. We need leaders who have vision and care for the organizations as if it was their own.

The four functions of management will play have a tremendous impact or managers and their leadership capabilities. Planning will be something most managers who think quickly on their feet do not do. Skipping the planning stage may hurt them in the future. Organizing is a major function of management, being organized shows you are serious about your position. Leaders who prepared are ready for any situation that comes their way and have the answer to all the questions. Why are they ready because they have done the planning stage of management? The function of controlling in management requires not only management skills by the manager, but leaders and managers are required to possess social and psychological knowledge of how to deal with groups and individuals within the organization. Controlling includes effective communication among the members of the organization. In controlling, attitudes, perceptions, and motivations of individuals are taken into account by the manager in order to motivate the members to work efficiently and get the work done. Meanwhile, human resources, interpersonal relations, and group dynamics are also concepts that need to be understood by the manager so that if problems or conflicts ever arise within the organization, then the manager can effectively formulate or come up with a solution that will resolve the conflict. Controlling is best applied in decision-making processes, such as negotiations between personnel and administration regarding a new policy that will be implemented or proposed to the organization

There are at least two distinct groups of managers that will be affected by this change. Many of us BC (before computers) managers may only plan to work for 10 to 15 additional years, but we will face a lot of change during that time, especially if we have failed to stay somewhat abreast of the changes that are occurring in information use and flow. The probability that someone else will select the dates of our retirement will also go up as we move forward in time (McManus 00).

The second group will be the AC (after computers) managers. They like seeing this shift occur, as they are put off by the waste they perceive in the way people do things in their company. Credibility is the first thing that suffers when BC and AC managers interact if both groups are not on the same level technologically. We will need to manage this generation gap over the next five to 10 years if we want to have cohesive management teams (McManus 00).

All the changes will affect many people in the future; the managers who use technology are not fazed by the change. Leaders who are set and their ways and do not adapt well to change never want to see what lies ahead for the future of management. In order to be a successful manager in the future Management will have to choose true leaders to lead their organizations. People who want to have a future in management and have what it takes to be a leader.

And this also, said Marlow suddenly, has been one of the dark places of the earth (Conrad, 6). This is the first quote from Marlow and it hints at the evil and loss of sanity in Joseph Conrad¡¯s Heart of Darkness. Evil can be found everywhere in this novella and Francis Coppola¡¯s Apocalypse Now. Both stories narrate a man¡¯s journey inside himself and the discoveries he makes. He confronts his worst fears regarding insanity, failure, and cultural contamination.

Evil itself is an inherent part of every human soul yet it seems to be held back by society. Sometimes this evil side stays inside of us forever and other times it is released when we come upon specific situations. This is clearly illustrated in Heart of Darkness. It is reflected in the setting as the Europeans travel from the Thames River in England slowly down the Congo and the whites slowly crumble and finally some lose their sanity. When Marlow was sent on the mission to find Kurtz, he was also trying to find himself. Kurtz was like Marlow when he first entered the Congo and had good intentions. Marlow¡¯s trip down the Congo represents a journey into his inner soul because as Marlow traveled father down the Congo and from the Outer Station he began to learn more about himself and found himself getting more and more savage. He began to realize that he had more in common with the natives or what the Europeans call savages than with the men of his race. Conrad is trying to say that everyone is a little like Marlow and Kurtz, that they have an evil side to them, but some are able to hide it better than others.

Conrad used darkness to contrast the light of society and how people depend on principles of western society to stay sane and how these principles are threatened by the darkness. The difference between light and darkness is most obvious in this novella. The story starts off with a frame story pattern. Conrad is telling a story in which Marlow and his friends are upon the ship Nellie at sundown. This setting already foreshadows what is to come as Marlow presents his story. The fact that Marlow and his friends are on the ship in the dark of the night creates a sense of evil. It is so dark that Marlow cannot see his friends and it seems that he is telling the story to the darkness itself. Light basically means civilized and dark means uncivilized. The Europeans seem to change as they travel farther down the Congo River until the white men finally collapse as they reach the most inner part of the Congo. The last contrast between light and dark is probably when Kurtz is dying on the boat after Marlow saved him. The brown current ran swiftly out of the heart of darkness, bearing us down towards the sea with twice the speed of our upward progress (Conrad, 115); This quote is the final description of savagery and uncivilization as Marlow and Kurtz are trying to escape from the savagery and death of the Congo.

When Marlow first began his journey down the Congo he was very much unaware of everything that was going on. The Outer Station was managed by a group of White Europeans yet it was maintained by black native slaves. We start to see glimpses of evil and darkness as Marlow set foot on shore. The natives are treated harshly and more like animals than humans. ¡°Black shapes crouched, lay, sat between the trees leaning against the trunks, clinging to the earth, half coming out, half effaced within the dim light, in all the attitudes of pain, abandonment, and despair (Conrad, 6).¡± Marlow came to a grove of trees and found a group of dying native laborers. A bit of European yarn was tied around their necks. He offered a biscuit to one of them and this image troubled him but he did not know what it meant. The setting continued to be dark and dreary as the colors are always black, brown, or yellow. As Marlow traveled farther down the Congo and away from civilization he found that his pre-established ideals about the natives turn out to be far from the truth. Marlow and his crew reach the Central Station where civilization still existed but it was slowly being eaten away by native culture and savagery. ¡°A neglected gap was all the gate it had, and the first glance at eh the place was enough to let you see the flabby devil was running that show (Conrad, ).¡± The closer they moved towards the center of the Congo, the more European civilization was being destroyed. When Marlow finally arrived at the Inner Station, not a trace of civilization was found, for there were no barriers between the Europeans and natives. Marlow realized that he was completely cut off from civilization and his morals were destroyed as he moved deeper into the Congo and past each station. He felt very depressed because he finally understood the cruelty of the world.

Kurtz himself was very much like Marlow before he first left for the Congo. That is why Marlow had such fascination for Kurtz even before he met him. Kurtz also had morals and standards from European society but that was destroyed as he moved toward the heart of the Congo. Kurtz had lived in the Congo and remained so far from civilization that he had been changed by the natives. He was corrupted by hidden power and seclusion. Kurtz lost his sanity and allowed himself to be worshipped as a god by the natives. Kurtz represents the evil and dark side in every man. It is hidden inside of us and will someday be unleashed. Kurtz¡¯s last words before his death were, ¡°The horror! The horror! (Conrad, 118)¡±

Insanity is closely related to Joseph Conrad¡¯s frequent reference to the light and darkness in Heart of Darkness. Since evil is an inborn trait in all men, Conrad uses darkness to compare the light of European society and how people depend on values of western society to keep sane. The evilness in men is restrained by society but some people allow it to be shown upon certain circumstances. Kurtz once had good purpose when he began his journey down the Congo. Like many others, he was cut off from civilization for too long so he lost his sanity and became savage like the natives. As Marlow traveled down the Congo River, he drifted farther and farther away from civilization. He tried to hold on to his European morals and ideals but found himself becoming more savage as he began to lose signs of civilization and the things that once kept him civilized and sane. Ultimately, many white men like himself finally gave in and lost their sanity. Fresleven is a good example of the changes that civilized Europeans went through when they went to Africa. By western standards, Fresleven was a good man but that makes people wonder how he could have died the way that he did, in a fight over some chickens. Another example of loss of identity and sanity is Kurtz¡¯ Russian Follower. This Russian sailor went to the Congo as a trading representative of a Dutch company but is now a devoted disciple of Kurtz¡¯. When Marlow and his crew went to take Kurtz back down the river, the Russian disappeared into the jungle, free from the rules of Western society like any other native would do. What saved Marlow from being savage and avoiding the same fate as the others is Kurtz¡¯ loss of sanity. He saw what happened to Kurtz after being away from civilization for too long and Marlow understood that he was alone and far away from civilization. Ultimately, I think that Conrad is saying that we can not find sanity anywhere because there is an evil side inside all of us which will cause us to lose sanity if we come in contact with the natural cruelty of the world. We do not want to admit the truth so we create a mask to hide it.

Francis Coppola¡¯s Apocalypse Now also narrates a man¡¯s journey into himself to discover and confront his fears. Captain Willard is similar to Marlow as he was given a mission to go to Cambodia during the Vietnam War to find and assassinate Colonel Kurtz. Coppolas Kurtz was an honored, brilliant, and successful, leader but like Conrad¡¯s Kurtz, he went insane due to corruption and seclusion. The general believed that Colonel Kurtz ran his own private army deep in the jungle in Cambodia and was worshipped like a god by the natives. In Apocalypse Now, it is also illustrated that a civilized man can lose his sanity by being too far away from civilization. For example, Captain Colby was previously assigned for the same job as Willard to assassinate Colonel Kurtz but he joined Kurtz¡¯ troops instead.

Both Joseph Conrad¡¯s Heart of Darkness and Francis Coppola¡¯s Apocalypse Now is trying to show us that the world is an evil thing. We do not want to admit this so we create morals to hide the truth. This is what makes us human but we must know that we are only hiding the truth. Some day we will not be able to hide and the truth will come out so we will be faced with the evil and darkness of this world. We will be faced with the same fate as Marlow and Kurtz.
