People say that William Shakespeare was and still is a legend. It is amazing how Shakespeares play Romeo and Juliet written centuries ago can be better than Franco Zefferellis movie production of Romeo and Juliet, which had much better technology to work with only decades ago. Although the movie appeared better, it left out some major parts. The play had better mood and plot details which made it much more dramatic and by far a better presentation.

A major difference between the play and the movie occurs in mood. An example of this is the marriage scene. In the that scene of the play, Romeo and Juliet act very serious by the way the two speak. Romeo says that the Holy Words the Friar speaks can make something without an equal, which is a very intelligent thing to say. Whereas, in the movie they kiss and giggle the entire time. This leads the viewer to believe that Franco Zefferelli wanted the two to look like fools, that they could not do anything the way it is normally done because they are children in search of quick love. This is bad because it is not very realistic. In real-life, young adults would take the matter seriously because they know it is a major step in life. The play is not entirely trying to make the two look bad, as in the movie.

Another major difference in the mood of the play and the movie is in the funeral scene. The funeral scene of the play is a very serious event. Juliets family is very upset and thinks that they are the cause of her death. Also, the Friar soothes the family of the loss of young Juliets life. However, in the movie version of the funeral scene, again everyone is sad but this time the Friar lets out a giggle as he pretends to pray for Juliet. This is a major difference because if someone had seen the Friar giggle, it may have changed the entire play. They may have questioned him why he giggled yet since he would not have a reason he may as well just spill what he knows. Since the movie was once again unrealistic, the play is the better production in this scene as well.

Write your Shakes research paper

There is a difference in the plot details between the movie and the play at the end of the story. In the play, the families are finally at peace as Romeo and Juliets real funerals take place. The Montagues even decide to erect a gold statue of Juliet and the Capulets shake hands with them which are very good signs that the long and bitter feud of the two families is over. On the other hand, the movie only shows that he two families have come together. But this is for a reason that virtually and two groups would come together fora funeral of one for one of their family members. All that the families do to acknowledge each other is as they walk into the church; they turn to face their equal in the opposite family. This is probably the biggest difference out of the productions because one of the goals that Romeo, Juliet and Friar Laurence had was that this marriage would end the quarrels. The plays version of this was better because nobody really wants to see a sad story, which the movie made it to be until the end but the play makes it a happy story, by one of Romeo and Juliets primary goals being completed, although they had to die for it

Due to all of the examples listed here, the mood in the marriage scene, the mood in the funeral scene, and the plot details in the the end of the play, the play is without a doubt, the better production. However, if Franco Zefferelli had made his movie more as a work of art instead of a production, and spent a little more time in doing so, he could have had himself one of the best movies ever, which William Shakespeare did with his play.

The influence of gender on one’s nature is often a controversial topic among scholars. For example, men are stereotyped as being brutal, vicious and conniving. As a result, they are often considered more likely to commit acts of violence. However, in the beginning of the play “Macbeth”, an influential protagonist Lady Macbeth is seen to posses such qualities. While Lady Macbeth presents herself to others as an ordinary lady, who is the wife of the Thane of Cawdor; single-handedly she persuades her husband Macbeth, to act upon her ideas. Enduring such qualities, Lady Macbeth is portrayed through reflective analysis of her sexuality, decisiveness, and her role in dramatic irony. Therefore, it is definite that Lady Macbeth has intentions and motives to sway her husband’s decision towards regicide.

The opening lines mentioned by Lady Macbeth have stated a direct opinion on her femininity. She mentions that a lady needs to contain a male’s characteristics in order to have power and the physical ability to plan out the murder of King Duncan. Lady Macbeth’s view on sexuality can be illustrated in the following phrases, “Come, you spirits / That tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here, / And fill me, from the crown to the toe, / Top-full of direst cruelty!” (1.5, ll.41-44) Calling the spirits increases Lady Macbeth’s approach to the murder of King Duncan. In addition, Lady Macbeth proves that by having a sweet and a kind personality of a lady does not provide her with the physical and the mental qualities that man in her perspective seem to have. Out of the phrases mentioned; “unsex me here” declares Lady Macbeth’s opinion on the importance of being a male. Furthermore, she continues by asking the spirits to fill her with a lot of cruelty. This informs Lady Macbeth that the only way to rise to the top of the Scottish monarch is by portraying a male’s persona. Later in Act I of the play, Lady Macbeth brings upon the stereotype of man being physically powerful because they commit acts of violence. This is described in the exceeding opinion which Lady Macbeth presents to her husband, “When you durst do it, then you were a man; / And to be more than what you were, you would /Be so much more the man.” (1.7, ll.4-51) This was one of the ways that Lady Macbeth used her beliefs on sexuality to persuade her husband to after the regicide.

The poet of this play, William Shakespeare, highlights on Lady Macbeth’s impulsiveness which assists her to form the sequenced events that lead to the climax. Within Act I, there was never an occasion where Lady Macbeth has questioned herself on the terrible possibilities that might backfire as a result of killing King Duncan. This further emphasizes that nothing else seems to matter to Lady Macbeth other than succeeding in killing the King and anon being in charge of the Scottish Monarch. Subsequently, Lady Macbeth clearly announces a direct statement that puts across her true approach to the killing of King Duncan,

“Come to my woman’s breasts,

And take my milk for gall, you murd’ring ministers,

Wherever in your sightless substances

You wait on nature’s mischief! Come, thick night,

And pall thee in the dunes smoke of hell,

That my keen knife see not the wound it makes,

Nor heaven peep through the blanket of the dark,

To cry “Hold, hold!” 1

It is obvious that Lady Macbeth is illustrated by William Shakespeare as a vicious psychopath, who does not have any concerns for others. For example, “Come to my woman’s breasts / And take my milk for gall,” (1.5, ll.48-4) enhances on Lady Macbeth’s new vigorous capabilities that communicate her ascendancy of gaining a male’s persona which gives her the ability to possess wickedness and cause trouble. In addition, Lady Macbeth calls attention to the “thick night” and “the dunes smoke of hell” to state the night of the regicide and Lady Macbeth’s desires of how the night should take place. In further detail, Lady expresses her determination of her husband succeeding in the plan of murdering King Duncan. Additionally, “That my keen knife see not the wound it makes, / Nor heaven peep through the blanket of the dark, To cry “Hold, hold” (1.5, ll.5-54) clarifies that the spirits she calls upon are going help her husband draw the deed to a close without any assistance for the King or his guards. Nevertheless, Lady Macbeth is her own creature, which has confirmed her determination through explaining her possession of strength and readiness to cease to the murder of King Duncan.

1 Shakespeare, William. Macbeth.Middlesex.Signet

Classic.18. (1.5, ll.48-51)

With such decisive qualities, Lady Macbeth is a woman that can definitely outdistance her husband Macbeth, to assassinate others.

Dramatic irony plays a prominent role in this Shakespearian play. Through implicit themes and circumstances where Lady Macbeth expresses her motives, her authentic self is displayed. Unlike Macbeth, her lines are enhanced upon cold-blooded schemes, proposed on her own. Besides, Lady Macbeth’s temperament can be extended from the following lines in the play “Macbeth”, “That which hath made them drunk / hath made me bold; / What hath quenched them hath given me fire. Hark! Peace!” (., ll.1-) While Macbeth is killing King Duncan and his acquaintances, Lady Macbeth is nevertheless, a continuous fighter against her own self. For example, a wife resembling Lady Macbeth would most likely to be concerned about the physical condition of her husband, when he is murdering more than one person on his own. In contrast, Lady Macbeth cares only about her attained dominance, which leads her to having the crown of Scotland. In further analysis, William Shakespeare endlessly states Lady Macbeth’s opinion and state of mind in the play, to identify the type of personality she encloses. Dissimilar from his wife, Macbeth at the moment of the play seems to be loosing his mind, imagining daggers and someone calling for his name. His ambition to kill Duncan is further declined, as his fears take over his psychological mentality. Still centered on his imagination, Macbeth rejects taking the dagger back to where the murder took place when Lady Macbeth says to; and replies back with, “I’ll go no more. / I am afraid to think / What I have done; / Look on’t again I dare not.” (., 4-50) Macbeth has not yet proven to be interested in having the highest position within the Monarch. He is in further denial of whether he should have not killed the King of Scotland. Above and beyond, Shakespeare continues to identify Lady Macbeth’s actions through powerful literature and at the same time creates irony to present that Lady Macbeth can sway Macbeth’s way.

Through history, statistics have proved that in nature males are born with stronger structures and do commit more criminal acts. They are well-known for being the leaders of the country and the ones to own larger businesses. However, it has never occurred that perhaps women have such abilities as the men. Shakespeare has proven that the character of Lady Macbeth in his play “Macbeth,” is a female that portrays comparable distinctiveness as any male figure who practices violence. Lady Macbeth identifies that females can have the objective and the purpose as any male to persuade another mortal. In conclusion, it is not because of the type of gender they are, but because they themselves have chosen to perform such acts.

‘The Necklace”

The character of Mathilde in Guy De Maupassant’s short story “The Necklace”, can be defined as a dynamic character; one that undergoes a change or develops as a result of the action of the plot. Mathilde starts out in the story as a self-indulgent woman obsessed with her dreams of material possessions. She seems to undergo a change in character, however, while working off the debts she and her husband obtained when they replaced Mrs. Forrestier’s necklace. At the end of the story, it seems as though Mathilde’s character has changed for the better. She comes off as being more mature and reasonable, and it is easier for the reader to find her likable.

In the beginning of the story, Mathilde can be seen by the reader as the unhappy victim of vanity and desire. She is described in the beginning as “a simple person, without the money to dress well”(5). She appears to be unhappy with her possessions because she considers them to be cheap, and she often dreams of nicer things; “‘She dreamed of the perfume of dainty private rooms’, ‘She dreamed of expensive banquets’”(5). Even though most women in Mathilde’s social class would never be bothered by the lack of fine material possessions, it seems as though she is obsessed with them. It’s as though she refuses to be happy with or even to accept the standard of living she and her husband maintain. When Mathilde’s husband, Loisel, brings home an invitation to the Ministry of Education dinner, it only upsets her when in reality it should have made her happy. All she can think about is how she has nothing to wear, and how the other women may look down on her. She tells Loisel to give the invitation to “someone else at the office whose wife will have nicer clothes”(6) than her own. Mathilde’s vanity becomes very apparent by her willingness to spend her husband’s summer vacation money on a dress that she may wear only one time. Even after she has obtained the dress, she still remains unhappy because she has no nice jewelry to wear with the dress, she tells Loisel that she’ll “look like a beggar”(7). He suggests that she borrow jewelry from her wealthy friend Mrs. Forrestier, and so she borrows a “diamond” necklace to go with her dress. Mathilde used the occasion of the dinner to try and make her unrealistic dreams of wealth and respect come true. It seems as though she has succeeded when, at the dinner, she “danced joyfully, passionately, intoxicated with pleasure, thinking of nothing but the moment, in the triumph of her beauty, in the glory of her success, on cloud nine with happiness made up of all the admiration, of all the aroused desire, of this victory so complete”(8).

The loss of Mrs. Forrestier’s necklace brought on a series of events in the story that would eventually lead to the change in Mathilde’s character. Loisel and Mathilde both had to give up any luxuries they may have had, and work long hours in low paying jobs in order to pay off their debt from replacing the necklace. Mathilde “soon discovered the horrible life of the needy”(10), she washed dishes and clothes, and ran countless errands involving hard labor. She learned to do the “heavy housework, dirty kitchen jobs”(10). It seemed as though, by working to pay off her debt, Mathilde was learning the importance of every penny she earned. She could no longer dream about the gloriousness of wealthy possessions, the reality of her debt was all that occupied her time and thoughts. She “dressed in cheap house dresses, she went to the fruit dealer, the grocer, the butchers, with her basket under her arms, haggling, insulting, defending her measly cash penny by penny”(11). She continued to live this life for ten more years, until they had paid back everything- even the “extra charges imposed by loan sharks and the accumulation of compound interest”(11).

Order Custom The Necklace paper

It is not until the end of the story, after all of debts have been paid off, that the reader can finally see Mathilde as a woman of integrity; she essentially becomes a woman that the reader can find admirable. She is described now as “looking old”, and “the strong, hard, and rude woman of poor households”(11). Even though she has aged and become “rougher”, the reader can find her admirable because she has behaved heroically in paying off her debt. She has, in essence, paid off the debt that was the consequence of her former vanity and desire for things that were realistically unattainable. Even after Mathilde finds out the necklace had never been real, and that it may to her seem pointless to have worked so hard for ten years; the reader can see that the hard work and suffering has brought out the best in Mathilde’s character.

In Guy De Maupassant’s short story “The Necklace”, the character Mathilde endures ten years of suffering and hard work, but becomes a better person because of it. She is a dynamic character, a character that undergoes a change for the better as a result of ten years of hardship and dedication. But even in the end, she cannot completely shed her old ways, as she still “sometimes” dreams of “that evening so long ago, of that party, where she had been so beautiful and admired”

The Evil Doings of Lady Macbeth

Decisions are always hard to make, but have to be made everyday. People tend to put pressure on others to force them to make the wrong decisions. In Macbeth’s case, Lady Macbeth is highly responsible for the evil doings of Macbeth, by forcing him to make the wrong choices, which puts his leadership at steak. She urges her husband to kill Duncan and become king, but is eventually driven to madness and suicide by her guilt over the bloodshed that follows. If it weren’t for Lady Macbeth, Macbeth never would have killed anyone.

At first, Macbeth felt he had no reason to kill King Duncan, because of the witches’ prophecies which stated that in the future, he will become king. If chance will have me king, why, chance may crown me without my stir. However, when Lady Macbeth found out about the prophecy that stated that Macbeth will become king, she immediately felt reason to murder him. Is too full o the milk of human kindness shows that Lady Macbeth considers Macbeth to be a wimp, and that she’ll have to do this all by herself. Leave all the rest to me clearly states that Lady Macbeth takes control over Macbeth’s thought which was not to kill Duncan, for he found no reason to. Lady Macbeth continues to convince and persuade Macbeth into her plan which is to kill King Duncan. Macbeth agrees to follow Lady Macbeth’s thoughts and kills King Duncan. He regrets his actions afterward, which is proof that he never was willing to kill him in the first place.

Macbeth has become deeply involved with murder, and eventually kills several others. This is proof that Lady Macbeth has transformed Macbeth into being a greedy, coldhearted human being, by saying things such as Are you a man? She undermines his masculinity, to make him feel at fault, and have it her way. Eventually, Lady Macbeth is driven to Madness by the guilt she holds on her shoulders, and ends up committing suicide. If it weren’t for Lady Macbeth, Macbeth would have never killed anyone.

An Inspector calls

The following essay will look at J B Priestley’s play ‘An inspector calls.’ It will examine the key theme of responsibility through the Inspector’s interaction with two of the main characters. Priestley explores the difference between individualism and individual responsibility and that of social or shared responsibility. This essay will illustrate the way J.B Priestly deals with this.

The characters that I have chosen are Arthur Birling and his daughter Sheila Birling. It quickly becomes obvious that age clearly influences the way that the parents react to the inspector’s visit and the unfolding of the story about Eva Smith, compared to the reaction of their children. My chosen characters show the greatest contrast. Whilst Sheila clearly develops and follows a personal journey opening her eyes to the impact an individual’s actions can have on fellow human beings, her father does not move his position in any way. He reacts to the immediate perceived danger of the situation but when he perceives that danger is gone, he does not change his views. He clearly states that his role is to protect himself and his family.

Birling begins his dialogue with the Inspector in a very comfortable manner. The Inspector shows him the respect that he expects. However the Inspector begins to challenge him and Birling becomes angry and aggressive repeating the Inspectors question to him ‘Did you say why?‘ And states that he doesn’t like the tone that he is being spoken to. He threatens the Inspector by talking about his close relationship with the Inspector’s Chief Constable and mocks the Inspector’s inability to play golf. Presumably golf at this time would be an expensive game that only Chief Constables and others on a par with Birling would be able to play. This is intended to remind Inspector about the difference in their social standing.

Buy an inspector calls term paper

Birling has a very clear sense of responsibility. It is his duty ‘. To keep costs labour costs down’ (15) and this overrides the need for compassion. When the Inspector gets him to confess to firing Eva for asking for more money Eric is upset. Birling does not understand this attitude seeing it as weakness. ‘Its about time you learnt to face a few responsibilities.’ (16) Birling is referring to the responsibility to keep profits up and to ensure the money to keep up the privileged lifestyle of the family. However, the play is based in a time when these traditional, class based idea was being challenged by socialism and Priestly allows the character of Birling to show he is aware of this challenge, although undeterred by it. ‘By the way some of these cranks talk and write now, you’d think everybody has to look after everybody else……………- community and all that nonsense.’ (10)

When the truth comes out about Eric’s role in Eve’s death, his concern is that

Birling also shows that he feels responsibility to uphold standards and the veneer of respectability, the ‘façade’. Later Sheila challenges this façade.

On the other hand the Inspector’s views clearly show the importance of social responsibility. The whole story of Eva is to show how power and responsibility go hand in hand. Some of his comments are subtle and ironic. On page 15 he states ‘After all, it is better to ask for the earth than to take it’ in relation to Eva’s request for a salary increase. This refers to wealth being distributed among the minority. The Birling family have the wealth to hire servants and the power to dismiss at their will. At the time Employees would have little rights and Employers would be unlikely to concern themselves with the lifestyles of their employees or anything outside of the factory. The Inspector reminds Birling,

‘Public men, Mr Birling have responsibilities as well as privileges.’

The theme of power and responsibility is expanded with Sheila. After it is revealed that she helped to get Eva fired from her job, the Inspector points out ‘And so you used the power you had, as a daughter of a good customer, and also of a man well known in the town, to punish the girl just because she made you feel like that.’ (4) Unlike her father Sheila seems to accept responsibility for her actions and shows genuine feelings of regrets and feelings of remorse “it’s the only time I’ve ever done anything like that, and I’ll never, never do it again to anybody. (4)

Sheila has probably more shocks throughout the visit than other characters. She finds that her fianc had been deceiving her, that her brother has been living a double life and that her parent’s views disgust her. The Inspector’s tone is both stern yet throughout is quite paternal. Sheila is very open with her answers and is more than willing to take responsibility. Although the Inspector harshly tells her that it is too late for her help as Eva is dead he does point out that she is only part of the responsibility ‘you are only partly to blame. Just as your father is.’

Further it is through Sheila that we see the Inspectors role. When Birling states ‘But you weren’t asked to come here to talk to me about my responsibilities’ (41) Sheila replies that she is ‘beginning to wonder’ and goes on to say ‘It means that we’ve no excuse now for putting on airs and that if we’ve any sense we won’t try.’ (41) We see that Sheila is beginning to see that the lifestyle that she is enjoying is a façade that disguises the unpleasant realities of life outside her home. Especially the reality of life for those less privileged than herself.

It is Sheila who first sees the whole picture representing joint responsibility. When the Inspector begins to question her mother, Sheila tries to stop her mother. Mrs Birling tries to remove any blame or responsibility from her and place it on the unknown father of Eva’s baby. Sheila can see that Mrs Birling is damning her own son. But the implications of this are that blame cannot be passed along, we all share the responsibility.

Some of the realities that Sheila faces are representative of the time that the play is set in. Both her brother and fianc have been involved with Eva. Eric refers to Birling’s high-class friends having mistresses. The assumption is that out of sight is fine. It is only wrong if it causes scandal.

‘One Eva Smith has gone - but there are millions and millions. Of Eva Smiths and John Smiths still left with us, with their lives, their hopes and fears, they’re suffering and chance of happiness al intertwined with our lives, with what we think and say and do. We don’t live alone. We are members of one body. We are responsible for each other.’ The inspector is speaking, not like a police officer, but a prophet. He goes on to say ‘If men do not learn that lesson, then they will be taught it in fire and blood and anguish’ Priestly uses this to create a sense of irony as the play was set in 11 only years before the great war of 114-118, and was wrote in 146 where the world was just recovering from the shock of the second world war .I feel J.b priestly was trying to say that we must change and accept responsibility for one another in order to prevent war and suffering throughout the world.

Rain clouds filled the sky as our car turned left into Lake Forest Memorial Park. It was the -year anniversary of the death of Amir. Amir was one of my dearest friends, as kids, we would spend hours building an indoor tent in my cousin’s room, and we had a sort of childhood friendship that was sacred in its own innocent way. Amir chose to take his life three years ago. So on that rainy, gloomy day, his closest family and friends gathered by his grave to mourn his death. Amir’s death really took a toll on all those close to him, including me. As the small drops of rain tapped on the picture engraved in the gravestone, I started to look back on my life, and tried to remember my friend.

The never-ending question ran through my mind again and again. It is almost permanently attached to every thought I ever have of him. The question is simply why? Why would he do such a thing? Amir was living in a world that lived in before he died; that of a typical teenager. When failing a math test, being rejected by a crush, or being teased by a bully meant the end of the world. These things meant everything to us, and when they didn’t turn out right, we gave up and thought that our life was miserable. I use ‘we’ because I used to feel the same way that Amir did. Superficial things meant everything to me, like how many friends I had or what kind of clothes I owned. We were blinded from the reality that these things were merely props in the screenplay of our life, and that a good play can be done without the props. There were often times where a break-up with a boyfriend, or a fight with my parents was painful enough to try and lead me to the same fate as Amir. Then, when the news came of Amir’s suicide, it hit me real hard. Suddenly my world changed.

Everything around me altered, and it was as if I was looking at everything from a new light; a darker, deeper light. I would see Amir’s parents, who were like ghosts walking on earth. Every bit of life was drained out of them, and smiling seemed humanly impossible to them. I saw how the choice of one person crushed the hearts and strangled the hopes of everyone around him. Looking at the people who loved my friend so much made me realize just how much Amir’s decision impacted us it literally put a hole in my hearts where it was once filled with childhood joys.

People often say that a person who commits suicide is selfish, but I believe that I am the only one who truly sees what was going through Amir’s mind. But to see how much the people around him were hurt by his self-righteous act, it put me in a position to rethink my life. I now see that to live for superficial things is really to live a fake life. All those things that I once thought were the center of my universe have now morphed into the backdrop, and realism has stricken me hard. When I returned to school and to my habitual way of life, it was as though nothing around me changed, but I knew that I had changed. When I listened to my friends talking about what outfit they were going to wear to a certain party, it seemed almost ridiculous to me to be worrying about such an insignificant thing. There was a point in my life when I too would join in the conversation and discuss that khaki pants would look absolutely wonderful with a blue top and a silver necklace I had seen in the window of a store at the mall. But after going through such an enormous shock, to find out that my childhood friend gave up on his life, those khaki pants or that silver necklace seemed so close to the surface, whereas my mind was sinking deep in the waters of self-realization.

Order Custom Essay on College Application Essay

I think that going through such a heartbreak and the seeing the effect it has on everyone really made me stop and think about what life is really about. If Amir had stopped to realize that these things that were tormenting him, and ultimately caused him to cut his life short, are all just artificial parts of life, maybe he too could come to the reality that I have now come to. I now see that we are all headed in the same direction, but Amir just chose to take the easy way, and that the easy way is not always the right way. I try to live my life one day at a time, and overcoming bumps and obstacles has become an important part of my life. These past three years have been an extended turning point in my life, where I try to look at things differently. Life is an endless series of ups and downs and that is what creates energy for me, and to throw it all away in one intense moment would mean a lifetime of misery and desperation to those around me. One instant second of relief for me would be an eternal retain for someone else.

A raindrop landing on the tip of my nose broke my thoughts and I focused back into my surroundings. The sounds of crying and sniffling and an overall haunting feeling filled the damp air. As I looked around me I could see the faces of the ones I loved, their eyes filled with tears of sorrow tears that could have been avoided. I looked at how many smiles those tears could have turned into, if only Amir could have had this sense of broadened perspective that I now have.

In the play Antigone one of the main charicters is the “tragic hero” Creon. To be a “tragic hero a charicter must have an inner flaw, be at the prime of his or her life, and bring about his or her own demise through their inner flaw. The charicter Creon has more than one in flaws, in fact, he has several. He is ignorance, arogant, and stubbourn. These falaw become apparent thoughout the play.

The most prevelant and obvious inner flaw of Creon is his stubbournness. He won’t back down from his foolish position of outlawing the burrial of Polynisese under the penalty of death until it is too late.

Creon says “Law is law and will remain so,” in defence of his order of Antigone’s exicution, but in his stubbourness he won’t yeild to argument that the gods’ laws should remain. He must know being told by his son Haemon, the people of Thebes, and Antigone that he is breaking the gods’ laws which are more important than his, but he is far too stubour no back down.

Haemon says, “Learn and listen when good advice is given.” Creon whose judgment is clouded by his stubourness refusesto listen to the lowly people of Thebes.

Haemon says, “Flexible trees survive,” pointing out that the best way to avoid revollution by the people is back down from your orders when the people demand something reasonable. Once again Creon refuses to back down, and his son’s insightful comments only enfuriate him because for him backing down is not an option.

The other flaws of Creon show up less and play a less intrical part in his dimise. Two of these lesser flaw are arrogance and ignorance. His arrogance is actually one of the things that feed his stubounness for , as Creon sees it a great and powerful man like himself couldn’t be wrong so to adheir to lesser people wouldn’t make sence. Creon isn’t necessarily an unintelligent man. He is just ignorant.

Creon’s ignorrance is displayed in the folllowing quote, “the whole breed of prophets certainly loves money.” He is accusing the prophet Teiresias of taking bribes when he gives a prophesy that displeases Creon. He is blinded by his willful ignorance.

Creon obviously thinks himself better than any person. He says, “Kings must have their way...” He is the king, and being the king makes him even more arroganrt.

Ceon probably isn’t all that terrible as a human being. He is only trying to do his best governing a nation in terrmoil. His flaws, however, lead to the destruction of everything he holds dear while eliminating themselves by teaching Creon that they lead to awful consequences.

The large cast of characters in Hellers Catch- is what makes the novel so memorable. The experience of each character makes the catch more believable to the reader. Each character symbolizes a different attitude and reaction to the system in which he is trapped. Oftentimes, the characters are stereotypes rather than actual individuals. There is no obvious division in intelligence between the authority characters and those governed by the authority.

Milo Minderbinder, Colonel Cathcart, and General Peckem are all excellent representatives of the military bureaucracy. Hellers portrayal of these characters makes a solidified statement about the way the army works. These characters do not see the men under their command as human beings, but as tools to further their careers. Milo uses his manipulative powers to improve his syndicate and his personal wealth. Pearson notes,...by the time his[Milos] activities have taken over Europe and North Africa in one vast syndicate and he has bombed his own men, he has become little more than a personification of greed(77). Milos tactics are often outrageous, and they even endanger the physical and emotional well-being of his fellow soldiers. According to one critic, For Milo, contract, and the entire economic structure and the ethical system that it embodies and represents, is more sacred than human life(Frank 66).

Colonel Cathcart also uses his troops, but for different purposes. Cathcarts scheme involves manipulating his soldiers so as to advance his own rank. Like Milo, Cathcart has no qualms about placing his mens lives in danger. In fact, solely to impress his superiors, he purposely volunteers his men for the most dangerous missions. Constantly raising the number of required missions his men have to fly, he perpetuates the catch.

Another character more concerned with upholding the appearance of order than with actually doing his job is General Peckem. He entertains himself by placing other officers at odds with each other and is representative of the stupidity in the military hierarchy. The personification of Hellers attitudes in his characters strengthens his dissent for the bureaucracy.

The characters governed by the military represent another of Hellers perspectives on war. These characters are truly trapped in the system. Each character has a different mechanism for coping with the horror. Havermeyer takes out his aggression on helpless field mice at might. McWatt dangerously buzzes tents and actually tries to get himself shot down. Flume retreats to the woods to hide from dangers he cannot cope with. Hungry Joes fears are magnified in horrible recurring nightmares. For these characters, insanity is truly the only sane response to an insane situation.

Yossarian epitomizes the character who rebels against the system. Yossarian tries as hard as he can to control his own fate. His most important goal is to simply keep himself alive. He attempts to keep out of combat as much as possible, even refusing to go. He relates to and sympathizes with his fellow soldiers. Yossarian believes in the importance of the individual human life, Catch- did not exist, he was positive of that, but it made no difference. What did matter is that everyone thought it existed, and that was much worse...(Heller 410). He constantly tries to maintain his individuality in the face of an impersonal war machine. As rated by one critic, Yossarian eventually ends up as a survivor with integrity by becoming an outsider and renouncing the values and potential rewards of the bureaucracy(Mullican 1). His paranoia separates him from the rest of the world. It turns him into a loner who has to overcome the insanity or be engulfed by it.

Through characterization Heller generates a specific point. Each character serves to reiterate Hellers feelings on war, capitalism, and the military itself. The attitudes that the characters personify make Catch- both poignant and memorable

possible not only because performance ratings are so subjective, but also because prejudice leads to perceptions that are not well-intentioned in the first place.

Political skills are also responsible for the evaluations received by many employees. Those who know ingratiating tactics will be evaluated better than those who lack such skills. Since it has been found that older workers are less likely to use such tactics, it is possible that older workers often receive a lower evaluation than younger workers, not only because of the ageist prejudices already discussed, but also because of their failure to kowtow to supervisors who are often younger than they are.

This assault upon the economic and emotional stability of so-called older workers is therefore enhanced by the practice of permitting recent college graduates without any supervisory experience or with limited supervisory experience to become managers and thus supervise older employees.

By older is meant here anyone forty years old or older since the Age Discrimination in Employment Act defines age 40 as an age at which protection from age discrimination is mandated by that law.

Virginia Stapleton is a fifty-nine-year-old woman who has been existing on welfare together with her invalid husband. She searched hard for a job in the secretarial field since she was an experienced typist for many years and has obtained skills in word processing. She searched the newspapers and answered a number of advertisements. When she did succeed in getting an interview she was treated with cold politeness. One potential employer was very blunt and without hesitation asked her, What can you do for us at this stage of your life? Even though Mrs. Stapleton wants the proverbial workfare, not welfare, she is unable to succeed.

[Wanda J.] Smith and [K. Vernard] Harrington have shown that age-based beliefs common in the United States at the end of the century are shared with the whole American population by young future managers. These beliefs include the view that older workers will not cooperate with younger supervisors and that the reverse is also true. Yet, such beliefs overlook that older workers have learned that failure to cooperate or show antagonism to a boss is career suicide.

Nevertheless, the relationship between a younger supervisor and an older worker does not fit the usual American norms. We define norm to mean anticipated behavior. Normally, then, individuals forty years old or more are viewed as authority figures, as leaders and as bosses. Teachers, clergy, parents and important elected officials are viewed as normally being older and experienced. Hence, the dyad younger boss-older worker is a role reversal in American culture and leads to tensions, resentments and anxiety.

The Causes and Consequences of Age Exclusion

The fourth aspect of the old-young dyad in late century America is the practice of age exclusion. This phrase concerns all who place their aged parents in a nursing home, all who never visit their parents, all who persuade or even force their parents to give up their money before they are dead and a host of other such practices.

Age exclusion is the product of nonproductivity. This means that because of the increase in the life span and the increase

Basketball shoes endorsed by famous athletes are the latest fix. The shoe stores announced that the shoes will be available for sale on a specified date. Unsuspecting parents are approached with the latest proposition to spend more than is required to keep a child’s feet comfortable, protected from the elements and free of dirt and debris. Money for this purchase could be from a budgeted source, however, I do not think this is the case.

Who are those who NEED to wear the NIKE shoe? Why is there such a hype to be amongst the first to have the NIKE shoe on the day of release? How far is NIKE willing to go to make a sale? Is honesty, integrity, ethics, and fairness a part of the NIKE marketing plan? Are there any moral consequences associated with the sale of NIKE shoes? What is the Nike true productivity perspective? Has NIKE identified the true opportunities and threats? Are we facing an epidemic similar to that of the tobacco industry? Is the NIKE hoping for a permanent addiction?

According to Nike, “specialists do everything in their power to ensure that Nike footwear directly reflects the specific performance needs of both professional and amateur athletes.” A review of the Nike web site reveals a commitment to quality and good looks. Research and development starts two to three years before the final product reaches the consumer. There are over 5,000 registered testers in the U.S. alone gathering NIKE data. Nike says, “The only problem is...this entire process takes time and money.”

Money in this case is an essential element for both the buyer and seller. I am not sure that NIKE knows or for that matter cares about the real impact these shoes have on the market. There is a strategic marketing plan. Athlete’s endorsement of the shoe creates a myth about whose the true manufacturer. Although the NIKE “check” no longer appears on the package containing the Jordan shoes, NIKE is still the manufacturer. Jordan has allowed his name to be used as a drawing card for the “image seekers.” Shoes are placed in stores based on volume and/or dollars brought in from the retailer. Distribution in this local area is good example. According to the store manager, a store in one our local mall gets 15 pairs of Jordan shoes while the store on Canal Street, in downtown New Orleans, gets 100+ pairs. I am told that Canal Street store is a million-dollar operation.

Order custom research paper on When is the Price Too High?

Those persons who frequent the Canal Street store live mainly on the lower end of the economic scale in this city. They are usually riding the bus. The money spent could probably be traced back to illegal gains. Although NIKE appears to be a good corporate citizen, the company or might I said its representatives seem to lack conscious.

Advertising is geared toward the glory seeking youth. Some are willing to do almost anything to walk in these shoes. Lines gather at the doors of the retail outlets long before it opens for business the first day the Jordan shoes go on sale. The shoe store personnel are fearful to open the store because of the potential for vandalism. Scalpers are present to sell the shoe for an additional profit. Mini auctions are held in the store would be consumers gather around the sales counter while the salesperson calls out a number for the highest bidder and makes a joke about getting paid and what’s for lunch. There has even been loss of life reported for a pair of NIKE. Literally, this shoe is to “DIE for”. My point exactly.

Customer loyalty, clear vision, meticulous details, focuses on profit and well-planned marketing strategies are all present in the NIKE market plan. At what cost? NIKE admits that “Nike might be able to make a cheaper shoe on a quicker timeline, but that would require overlooking the essential details that have made Nike the shoe of choice around the world.” Disappointment from a teenages parent is unhealthy for a store that had my shopping commitment, budgeted dollars, trust and word of mouth advertising.

Using the NIKE name for personal gain, in my opinion, is both unethical and illegal. NIKE is the hype. Nearly every youngster is willing to approach a breadwinner to make a purchase. To think that the retailer find it OK to charge one price while providing a receipt that reflects the price published by NIKE, raises an important issue. Is this a true win/win situation? Are we willing to sell our soles to the devil for a pair of NIKE? Who do we hold responsible? NIKE or the CONSUMER.

Act 1 and Act Response Journals

After reading this book, it was very obvious to me that Willy believes completely in what he considers the American Dream. He believes that a well liked and personally attractive man in business will definitely acquire the material comforts offered by modern American life. Oddly, his fascination with the outward qualities of attractiveness is at odds with a rough, more rewarding understanding of the American Dream that identifies hard work without complaint as the key to success. Willys interpretation of being liked is apparent. He childishly dislikes Bernard because he considers Bernard a nerd. The fascination that Willy holds with the American Dream becomes more of an obsession. He finds it hard to determine which life is his, and which is the life that he dreams of.

“And when I saw that, I realized that selling was the greatest career a man could want. Cause what could be more satisfying than to be able to go, at the age of eighty-four, into twenty or thirty different cities, and pick up a phone, and be remembered and loved and helped by so many different people?”

I chose this quote to help show my point that Willy truly was fascinated by his idea of what the American Dream truly was. Willy poses this question to Howard Wagner in Act II, in Howards office. He is discussing how he decided to become a salesman after meeting Dave Singleman, the salesman who died the dignified death of a salesman that Willy himself dies by. His high regard of Singlemans extended success illustrates his obsession with being well liked. He dreams of having people remember and love him as the ultimate satisfaction, because such warmth from business contacts would validate him in a way that his familys love does not.

It seems almost as if Willys life charts a course from one abandonment to the next, leaving him in more and more pain each time each time. Willys father leaves him and Ben when Willy is very young, leaving Willy neither money or history . Ben eventually departs for Alaska, leaving Willy to lose himself in a distorted vision of the American Dream. Most likely a result of these early traumas, Willy develops a fear of abandonment, which makes him want his family to conform to the American Dream. Biff, who Willy considers the picture of promise, drops Willy and Willys obsessive ambitions for him when he finds out about Willys adultery. Biffs constant inability to succeed in business furthers his separation from Willy.

There are many things that Willy obsesses about, but Willys primary obsession throughout the play is what he considers to be Biffs betrayal of his ambitions for him. Willy believes that he has every right to expect Biff to fulfill the promise inborn in him. When Biff walks out on Willys ambitions for him, Willy takes this rejection as a personal insult, and he associates it with insult and unkindness. Willy is a salesman, and Biffs ego-crushing rejection ultimately reflects Willys failure to sell him on the American Dream. Willy assumes that Biffs betrayal stems from Biffs discovery of Willys affair with another woman, which is a betrayal of Lindas love. While Willy feels that Biff has betrayed him, Biff feels that Willy has actually betrayed him with his stream of lies.

“I saw the things that I love in this world. The work and the food and the time to sit and smoke. And I looked at the pen and I thought, what the hell am I grabbing this for? Why am I trying to become what I dont want to be … when all I want is out there, waiting for me the minute I say I know who I am.”

This is part of Biffs explanation to his father during the peak of their final confrontation in Act II. It helps him clear the surprise of his true identity, even though Willy cannot possibly understand. Biff is confident and somewhat comfortable with the knowledge that he is a dime a dozen, as this escape from his fathers delusions allows him to follow his instincts and align his life with his own dreams. Where Willy cannot comprehend any idea of individual identity outside of the limits of the material success promised by the American Dream, Biff realizes that he can be happy only outside these limits. Even though his attempt to cure Willys delusions fails, Biff frees himself from Willys expectations for him.

ago my dad started a new adventure, he came to Canada put down some roots and did his best to nurture.

When I was first approached to speak today about my father on behalf of the family, it took me almost a week to hammer out what I wanted to say. I mean, after all, how do you summarize in two minutes the influence my father has had on lives of so many people. So I’ve decided to do my best by putting into words the things that have often meant the most to me.

I always kept coming back to sitting around the dinner table with Paul and Ana and Dad, talking about everything from politics to our plans for the future. It was sitting around arguing sometime passionately and always with a sense of humor that my father conveyed some of the best life lessons I carry with me.

Believe in yourself.

Be careful.

Do what you say you’re going to. Or simply, live with integrity and honesty.

As I grew up I realized that there are many temptations, and sometimes it’s hard to live by these obvious words.

My father is a man who practices what he preaches.

Dad always believed that my brother and I always had in us the strength to overcome the challenges that life faced. He always a doled out a careful measure of concern, support, and often gave his advice not so much by telling us what to do… but by asking questions, so we were always forced to think for ourselves.

I often catch myself hearing his voice when I’m about to engaging in something that perhaps isn’t necessarily a good idea.

Beyond just being a parent, growing up I always felt I had a very good friend to turn to when things got hard. Coming to my dad for advice was always safe, whether it was about money or the pain of heartbreak, he knows how to make you smile when you’re feeling down.

As I see him approaching a change in lifestyle, which I think he’s looking forward to, I can see someone who isn’t ready to rest on his laurels. Already there is talk of travel, education, and talking a little more time to smell the roses. Because if you ask me, that’s what my father is about… living life, humbly, gently, with compassion and care. When I look around at the people in this room I know that the reason you’re here is because he’s touched your life is some way. Either through a helping hand or some sage advice. I see someone who is more that just a good parent or a good friend, I see a man who’s learned that living well, is about what you give, how you help, and striking a healthy balance between knowing what’s important and knowing when not to take yourself too seriously.

Forty years ago my father came to Canada, and Dad .. however you measure your success. Know that you are successful, words don’t do justice to how much we all love and respect you. I was asked to speak on behalf of the family, but know that you’re the one who taught me what family means. Thank you all for coming, and Dad thank you for always being there.

In general, pieces of literature tend to give off a feel of the time period in which they are written. ‘The Adventures of Tom Sawyer’, by Mark Twain, is a novel which was written in the 1870’s and gives a superior understanding of what society was like in this era. Education and religion were very important to the morals and values of the people of this time; they were both taken more seriously than they are now. Another aspect of the 1870’s that was portrayed in this novel was the poor health care. Mark Twain displayed the thinking process of this time period when he included the small, but noticeable amount of racism towards the “still not yet quite equal in this time period” African- American race. Additionally, Twain gave the “Frontier Era” familiarity when he introduced his characters Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. These characters were used to unleash the “rebel” typecast and demonstrated what was inappropriate for the time. ‘The Adventures of Tom Sawyer’ reflects the history and thinking of the 1870’s through education and religion, lack of satisfactory health care, racism and demonstrated what was unacceptable through the prototypical characters in the book.

“Education and religion were important aspects of everyday life in the 1870’s.” (1) Children were expected to go to school everyday to get an education. Those children who did not attend school were considered mischievous and unruly. An example from the novel is when Tom explains to the teacher that the reason he is late is because he stopped to speak with Huckleberry Finn. “Thomas Sawyer, this is the most astounding confession I have ever listened to…” () Since Huckleberry does not attend school, he is considered repulsive and intolerable. Children had more respect for adults, elders and especially teachers in the frontier era. In the proceeding quotation Tom tried to show respect for an adult he admired but ended up tongue tied from anxiety. “Tom was introduced to the judge, but his tongue was tied… his heart quaked partly because of the awful greatness of the man. He would have liked to fall down and worship him. The judge… asked him what his name was. The boy stammered ‘Tom’, ‘No, not Tom it’s…’ ‘Thomas Sawyer, sir’ ” () This passage shows Tom’s respect for the judge and also how children used to use the term sir when speaking to adults. When a child did something iniquitous or dishonest in this time period, they were expected and take their punishment without arguing. When Tom got into trouble for skipping school, he took his punishment, without complaining, of whitewashing the fence. “Tom was whitewashing with vigor, and Aunt Polly was retiring from the field with a slipper in her hand and triumph in her eye.” (4) Everybody in the 1870’s was religious and was expected to go to church. Every child was responsible for learning the prayers. “Aunt Polly had family worship, it began with a prayer built from the ground up of solid courses of scriptural quotations” (5) In conclusion, education and religion were significant parts of society in the 1870’s and were portrayed well in this novel.

Health care in the 1870’s was inadequate due to lack of medical research. Also since “America had just finished fighting a civil war” (6) “the economy was low. (7) In ‘The Adventures of Tom Sawyer’, it was evident that health care was not tremendous when Becky Thacher stopped coming to school because she was mildly sick. Many people were debating whether she was going to die. “Becky Thacher had stopped coming to school… for a few days… she was sick. What if she should die!” (8) The lack of health care in this era was also evident through the novel when two of the main characters, Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn are discussing remedies to cure warts. Instead of suggesting medicinal treatment, the boys suggested organic and spiritual treatments such as spunkwater and dead cats. “ ‘Say, what are dead cats good for?’… ‘Cure warts with’… ‘I know something better’… ‘Spunkwater’ ” () Another example of the poor medical care of the time is when Tom complains of toothache. Instead of taking him to the doctor or dentist to see what is wrong, Aunt Polly decides to pull out the tooth herself. “The old lady made one end of the silk thread fast to Tom’s tooth with a loop and tied the other to a bed post” (10) In conclusion, the lack of medical investigation in the 1870’s is discreetly evident throughout the novel.

Although by the frontier era African- American people had more freedom and rights, many were still used as maids and hired help in households. “The slaveholding community of Hannibal provided a mix between rugged frontier life and the southern tradition” (11) Also, many old fashioned parents brought their children up thinking poorly of other races because of their erstwhile beliefs. In “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”, Tom’s family possesses a “little black boy” to assist the individuals with their daily responsibilities. “Jim, the small coloured boy, sawed next days wood and split the kindling before supper” (1) In the story, Jim is definitely not a slave, but does work for the family. Consequently, some terms that are unacceptable in today’s society such as “Negro” and “Nigger” are used throughout the book. These terms are probably meant to be used in a non- offensive way but would be offensive to many of the black people in the 1870’s. The fact that these terms are thrown around carelessly in this era shows the lack of respect for these people. Lastly, the blacks are still partially segregated from the white people in this book. They are not referred to as just people but as black people. Throughout the book one is referred to as “the small coloured boy” (1) This shows how black people were still not treated like equals and are seen for the colour of their skin and not their true identity. In conclusion, America was still a racist society in the 1870’s and ‘The Adventures of Tom Sawyer’ demonstrates this particular time period characteristic through the use of inappropriate slang terms, the utilization of coloured maids and “hired help” and the social attitudes towards the African- Americans in the novel.

‘The Adventures of Tom Sawyer’ is a novel that is based of the real- life chronicle of Mark Twain’s voyages as a child. The two characters Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn are “drawn from life; … a combination of the characteristics of the three boys [he] knew.” (14) Although these characters are drawn from life, they in no way represent what life was supposed to be like in the 1870’s. These characters were so unacceptable for the time that the “book was banned from book list in many libraries in America” (15) for a long time. These two characters help us to understand the time period because they introduce what was “morally wrong” in society at the time. What is excepted in youths now is much more than in the frontier era. Tom and Huck skipped school, smoked and played practical jokes on each other. Joe Harper (one of Tom’s friends) says, “I could smoke this pipe all day” (16) after the three boys just light up a pipe. This was no way for children to act. Children were supposed to follow the rules, get an education and most of all, obey everything that adults said. In conclusion, the insurrection of these two characters has helped in demonstrating the thinking of the 1870’s by disclosing what was intolerable for children of the time.

The novel ‘The Adventures of Tom Sawyer’ reveals the history and beliefs of the 1870’s through intimations of the importance of education and religion, instability of the health care system, racial discrimination in the community and unacceptable behaviour for the time period, which was reflected through the characters. Religion and education were the largest and most important thing of many people’s lives. The health care was not up to standard and racial discrimination was just starting to die down. This novel gives a superior understanding of the frontier era.
